    The main reason for JDM cars costs raising is the lack of production of new sportish cars in the last 15 years.
    The late 80s and early 2000s, maybe, the last affordable ICM cool cars in the market.
    And the number of sufficiently preserved car is a decline from year to year.

    As I see it, the prices of 90's JDM classics are skyrocketing due to two main factors, resulting in a "perfect storm" of heightened demand, so to speak:
    1. An entire generation who grew up consuming media featuring these machines, dreaming about owning them are now coming of age, and some have the means to pursue them.
    2. The US 25-year Classic Car Clause. As these vehicles become legal to import to the US, of course the demand is bound to increase, especially as it coincides perfectly with the former.

    The main reason of the price sky rocketing is US market's 25 year import law. There is a hunger for these cars and there are many wealthy enough car enthusiasts. This pulls the whole market up. And yes, Fast&Furious is one of the reason for this hunger.
    If I compare the situation with Europe, there is way less car guys willing to drive a RHD cars, which keeps the price of JDM gems on lower level compared to USA, but the prices are rising slowly as well, since the market is like communicating vessels. LHD variants are pretty much tied to american prices.
    And I'm worried, that this trend will continue, because of very strict emission regulations and corporate fuel economy standards. Many of the car manufacturers announced, that they will no longer import or produce sports cars for european market, because they are being punished for such move. Unfortunatelly, it's quite difficult to register such car as a historic vehicle, because it should be as close to stock as possible. Also there is 30 year boundary (set by FIVA), compared to 25 in the US. I also shouldn't forgot to mention, that car modification is very often forbiden in many cases in european countries and if you want to do that the right way, it's extremely expensive.

    • @hephaistosthesmith2069
      @hephaistosthesmith2069 3 года назад +1

      idk where you get your info but jdm cars are way more expensive in the eu, compare the yearly salary of europeans vs us americans and you see that theres a huge gap, a supra starts at around 25€-30€ k the average yearly salary after taxes in germany is like 35€k compared to the us salary of around 45k. its not about "EWW LHD" its about " should i really spend a year of my life working to pay a car i dont even know i can comfortably drive?"

  • @NjoyMoney

    • @interstate366
      @interstate366 3 года назад

      Correct, but Skylines jumped in price after 4-5 years of already being legal here. When the R32 first became importable in 2014 you could get a GTS-T for around 10-12k USD, and a GT-R was around 20k. In 2020 those prices have doubled. I bought a 1992 Aristo in 2020 for 12k USD, and everyone I’ve talked to has agreed that it was an absolute steal.

    I must say - it’s a bit of a shame prices are rising on 90s JDM cars. I say that because gone are the days of buying a S13 or Supra to throw around in the hills or track without having to worry too much about crashing.
    Now we keep them in the garage or baby them about (there are exceptions) on the street. They were designed to be driven and hard, a lot of owners will be hesitant to do that when there’s so much money on the line.

    I think some more possible reasons for increasing prices is due to following:
    1. Cars over time get wrecked from all sorts of reasons and we have less and less on the roads.
    2. Many are poorly modified examples that will never be able to be reverted to original form or in horrible condition due to stance/widebody modifications.
    Also, these 2 reasons alone help stock models increase even further.
    You can even see prices staying very high on newer Japanese sports cars in places like Canada where we have winter. Example, my 2018 WRX STI (D-Type) the price of mine dropped $2,000.00 since buying new which is amazing on a 3 year old car. (Try that with a BMW haha) Reason is most models are winter driven and have very high mileage and rust over time. Also lots of poorly modified examples.
    So if you store it in the winter and keep it stock, your value basically stays the same as new and than after 10+ years begins to rise.
    Another example, since I'm a Subaru guy.....in 2007 a 2004 WRX STI cost on average $25,000-30,000 in Canada. In 2020.....it still costs the same on high mileage models with rust. If you have a low mileage, winter stored it's even higher now! 3 years ago a clean stock example sold for $35,000.....now I bet it would even more.
    So yeah, Japanese sports cars (especially in manual) overall will either keep there value, or keep rising. I think with the the possible ban of gasoline car sales in places like Europe, Japan & Canada in 2030(if it happens) will raise prices even more since you won't even be able to buy anything like this new anymore especially in manual!
    Also, for those who read all this, some other interesting information regarding Canada and JDM cars. What I have noticed from all my years of monitoring the market, RHD drives here actually have a very low value compared to LHD models. Like WRX STI LHD would be $25,000, but if it's a JDM model the value is only like $17,000. The biggest reason for this is because insurance in Canada for RHD drives is extremely expensive and many companies don't even want to insure you!!!
    The only RHD cars here that are expensive is basically the R34 GTR, Everything else is cheaper by a lot compared to a LHD model.

    There is a garage here in Seattle, Washington that opened two years ago that imports sports cars. The popularity of car tuning in general has grown in popularity. Everyone wants to be as different as possible and feeds the desire for rare imported cars. This garage brings in 4 to 6 cars a month from each country out of Japan, Austrailia and Europe (particularly Italy). It is a brisk business and the cars can sale for a great deal more here than they can in the home country. They have recently had R32 Nismo, V·Spec, and an Australian models. All sold for over $90,000. They sale for an average price around $120,000. Beyond R32 GTR cars they sale Autozam AZ-1, RX-7, Suzuki Alto Turbo RS, Lancer Evo, Subaru WRX and other JDM cars known for drifting or fun sports cars that were never sold in the US. They also sale European brands that have a rally racing heritage but were never sold in the US like, Ford RS200, Škoda 130LR Evo, Lancia Stratos and other rare cars that sale for $60,000 and up. The most affordable I have seen from them was a Lancia Stratos with 160,000km on it for $46,000.

    Its not just JDMs, exotics too. The prices of gated Murcielagos and Gallardos are going through the roof. 550 Maranellos as well. In 2013 you could buy one for 60k all day long. Now they are +120. We also know what happened with the air cooled Porsches. Gated F430s are basically non existent now and 360 Modenas are on the rise. Many people blame the states when the truth of the matter is ALL cars are skyrocketing for the mere fact that they don't make cars like they used to anymore and with time taking many of these cars due to crashes, collectors purchases, etc naturally the prices increase. No matter what your preferences of cars are, JDM, Euro, supercars, etc nobody is safe. I cant tell you how many collectors I hear complaining about the prices of Carrera GTs in how they used to be 300k for a good example now they are flirting with the 1 million mark.

      @@marcusmcneal7453 Its not really a problem. The only issue I see is that certain people cannot buy certain cars now due to it being unrealistic however I couldn't care less about someone else's ability to buy or not. If they wanted a certain car for themselves to own,, they should have purchased their dream car when prices were in the toliet 7 years ago. I don't think anyone in their youth sat around playing these games and thinking "when I grow up I definitely won't buy that car just to keep the market sane." People are quick to say that its because of F&F when they fail to comprehend that cars for that movie were chosen due to the fact that they were already popular among car enthusiasts. The current situation is no different from the prior generation buying 308 GTS, DeLoreans, Celica XXs, late 70s Trans ams, and late 60s Chargers. Each generation has certain cars they grow up with in different ways.

      @@KeenanStyles On point. Whenever it comes to collector’s cars, nostalgia is nearly always the driving force. Some of the prices we see aren’t just due to people throwing massive amounts of money at things. A lot of these cars are truly just getting rare to find, even rarer in good condition, and scarcity inflates the price. A lot of these cars spent the early 00’s being “cheap” cars and got treated as such. The people buying them now aren’t to blame for the prices, it’s really the people that owned them years ago and treated them like garbage, resulting in too few on the road to make the market stable. Like I’m trying to find a late 80s Accord 3 door hatch and it’s borderline impossible.

      Good points about desirable exotics especially manuals. I paid $14k CAD for my first Integra Type R DC2R. $28k CAD for the next one last year. The only car I want is 997 GT3 but surprisingly they aren’t rising. Porsche had a lot of GT cars to choose from (991 GT3 was sold in but numbers) so there is a lot of supply. Also late 80s accord is a unicorn. Some cars were just used as daily’s and suffered high attrition rates.

No one buys a car with 200k miles on it unless they plan to put money into it to keep it running - but with these cars .. no they aren't going to 'just keep it running' they are going to make it a project car.
