    Love the everyday jobs on the farm. £100+ is very good. Price for both sheep and cattle has collapsed in Australia. We are getting ready to wean some calves to sell next month and the price is getting to around a quarter of what we got this time last year. Our heifers might only make $300-400 so the equivalent of £150-£200 for 9 months of feeding and it costs around $100 just to truck and sell at the market!

    Good lambs well picked at mart ..to many shepherds dont batch their lambs right, thinking that a poorer fleshed lamb will be concealed among better lambs but infact buyers can spot them and it devalues the whole pen. Agree on the vaccines ,we couldn't source Orf vaccine this lambing and luckly had no issues as we breed own replacements and all ewes get scratched every year at lambing as well as the lambs so guess we escaped as a good level of immunity had been built up but we will vaccinate in 2024.keep up the good work.

    To me there is a certain irony within your flock. You appear to be running certain strains of sheep breeds to produce your lambs with easy lambing and cheap over-winter costs.
    Based on your recent tup purchase where you describe him as somewhat smaller than some BUT when mated smaller sheep strains you are looking for good mothers, heavier lamb birthweights, greater early vigour etc. All this suggests broadly smaller parents.
    However you are looking for heavier fat lamb sale weights. Is this realistic with overall smaller parents of the fat lambs, granted larger terminal sires would raise finished lamb slaughter weights to some extent.

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  Год назад +10

      Ur right! Lots to think on. I don’t really want to have to take the lambs to 50kgs but if it’s what the market wants i have to work towards that just now. Re the closed flock / smaller sheep that is very much just for lizzy’s piece of ground just now which is slightly rougher ground. So a smaller sheep would suit better. Always learning though thanks for the comment 👍

    • @patpierce4854
      @patpierce4854 Год назад

      I’ve wondered about all the variables under consideration! To me, having those big Texel boys as terminal sires for your smaller, tougher ewes just seemed a mismatch for your conditions.

    Just a thought, but had you thought about lambing your replacement female's a year earlier at 13/14 months old ?
    This would reduce the cost of your replacements . Your own ewe lambs will always be the best value in the long term, rather than risk buying in disease.

    Brilliant video again Cammy!
    Everyone wants to go with lambs that bit heavier I suppose but do you think it’s worth getting them to 25kg from 22.5kg and having to wait that extra few weeks and taking a gamble on the price going up/down all for the sake of a few kg?
    I drew all mine from 22-24kg this year but would love to be going with 25/26kg but just hard to get them into that weight without being patient I find.

    Not easy weighing up the advantages of taking them to a higher weight versus the feeding, dosing, impact on feed left for smaller ones and the little thought of weight/£ per acre of having more but smaller lambs leaving the farm. If you have the space and feed it should be a win.
    If you aren’t going to be happy producing small lambs, lower prices maybe staying big is where you need to be. If you’re proud of your stock you will be less stressed and more happy.
    Personally can see the advantage of low input smaller sheep but it’s not for everyone.

      There is an argument for the but at this time of year it doesn't cost any extra to run them on until they make the weight. It's from now on they get expensive to keep!

    I wouldn’t be too concerned with keeping the lambs to get them bigger, if they’re fat get them off. It’s days on farm that costs you. Less chance of them dying on you unexpectedly aswell if you get them off quicker. 😂

      Aye certainly from now on it costs money. When we’re over run with grass it’s nae hassle to keep them to 50kgs but bloody expensive to do that now!

      @@TheSheepGame i always wonder why buyers in the mart happily buy really big lambs but if you put them straight to the abattoir you would get hammered for them being too big and too fat. 🤷‍♂️ if they’re 43kg and fat here we get them off

    Your videos aren't in order. Did I just see you take the skin from a dead lamb and put it on a rejected by mom lamb? Then give it to another mom and she accepted it? Did it live? So interesting. Perhaps you could number the videos. I'm amazed.
