The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

No overdubs, auto tune or vulgar language just flat out entertainment.
Why would you need auto tune? It’s just a dude talking.
@@Helo_rides_for_commies also I mean... 1960's. autotune never was even conceptualized at that time because the only working computers could at maximum play a game of pong
What about "hell"? Jimmy Dean used that word and Ed Sullivan had no problem with it! I know that in his description of "man made hell" he wasn't meaning for it to be a cuss word, but for the sixties, I was pretty sure that was not an acceptable word for public television shows!

This was played at my dad's funeral. He was called Big John by many. He would do anything that he could to help people. He was a big man.
That's nice Becky.I had an uncle the same.A great man. This song will always resonate with many.xx
Great tribute to a big, big man!♡
Great song 🎶
every time I hear this song, I think about people judging someone before they know them. how big john was actually a hero
Still the best version. 🥰
There was a guy in our neighborhood his name was John he was a very good friend of my aunt they were best of friends growing !! He did 2 tours of Vietnam as a United States Marine he had come home on leave he was dressed in his military uniform he always had a nice word for me sometimes just kidding around with me !! I started singing Big John big bad John because even as a teenager he was a real bad ass. I often think of him when I hear this song ! Rest in Peace John you were a class act !!
Always liked this song, i was a coal miner here in Australia for 43 years, a couple of times throughout the years we needed Big Bad John.
At the age of 22, 6'10" and 245lbs I've come to appreciate these older tracks. God bless. 💪🏼
My uncle john couldnt read and could only sign his name but this man had a heart of gold and he could do anything with his hands he helped to raise me and my siblings this was his favorite song to you uncle johnny
My father grew up in a Sicilian sulphur mining town. This was one of his favorite American songs, this and Tennessee Ernie Ford's "Sixteen Tons".
I saw this performance when I was 11 years old. The power of the spoken word conveying the stark images and story of brave 'Big John' still resonate today, right now.
Was it mid 60s? Think I was 7-8
@@dlday7821 November 5th, 1961. RUclips provides the airdate in the description section. 🇵🇷🇺🇸😎🦂
Please tell me your words are true.
100%
“Big John”, I know a great John. He saved my life.
I remember my dad playing this as I was a kid. Reminds me of my dad, R.i.p.
One of the first 45s I ever owned. Played it over and over on my Dad's phonograph back in 61when I was 5 or 6. The song had a haunting poetry to it and I really liked the idea of Big John. I realize now what a formative influence it must have been.
I wish shows like this and hee haw were still regularly played on tv. My mom and dad told me all about them, wish I could watch them.
One of the biggest selling records of the entire 1960s decade! He had other pop country crossover hits, like P.T. 109 and Little Black Book. ABC gave him a one hour variety show, The Jimmy Dean Show ran for 3 seasons, 1963 to 1966. He did a bit of acting in a James Bond movie, was a substitute host for Johnny Carson in the '60, and yes, then started his sausage company. A really good man and fine country entertainer in his time. Thanks for posting this of Jimmy on Ed Sullivan.
Jim Hilliker I remember as a child, Listening to his record, ' Little Sandy Sleighfoot.'. It was a great Christmas song for kids and adults with a very meaningful, message.
Beautifully put
Very interesting.
Thanks.
On learning that he took on an acting career, especially in that era, with a name like Jimmy Dean..
I guess I'd have packed it in and invested in a sausage factory, too 🤔
Don't forget he did a number of episodes with Fess Parker on The Daniel Boone show
@@mint234567898765432 He was a regular as Josh Clements in the last 2 seasons after Ed Ames' departure. Before that he was a guest in 2 or 3 episodes playing 2 characters : Jeremiah and Delo Jones.
Crashing blow from a huge right hand, sent a man to the promise land. " that's a bad ass line right there"
It's also a wrong line. It was 'sent a Louisiana feller to the promised land'
@@clearlake3492 🤔 will look into it. Thanks. " But still a cool line "

@@kevinkelly1529 sure did say a Louisiana man. 👍
Anyone that makes Jimmy Dean sausage when I'm over for breakfast is my new best friend.
I never thought I’d ever see this clip again I remember seeing it on Ed Sullivan growing up. Thanks for sharing.
@Hubert Harmon another one here, just brilliant
When I saw this on Sullivan ... at age 6, I was insufferable until my mother bought me the LP.
My name is John and as a kid I would listen to this on my dad's 8 track in his boat until I ran the battery down. Now I am 6'3" and over 300 lbs so I guess Lived up to my name lol.
I still love 💕 this song or ballard. Still brings tears to my eyes.
Me too!
Same here ♥️
Ditto
I’m with ya, still tear up😪👍🤠
❤this too, wonder who wrote it great song
This was my FIRST 45 rpm record ever. My aunt bought it for me. It cost a whopping 79 cents back in 1961. Great song then and still great today.
That was alot of money in 61...I was born in 63
What would that be at the current rate old lad?
It just stands the test of time so well. But then again great songs tend to do that.
This song came out, when my dad was young and before he met my mom. My dad's name was John. Years later, when I was a kid, occasionally one of my dad's friends would start singing this song, as soon as my dad walked up to them. So, it's a special song to me, that makes me think of my dad.
Real Music 🎶
It feels like a traditional folksong that's been around forever, but Jimmy Dean wrote it in a few minutes while traveling between appearances. People love myths and legends, so I doubt it'll ever fall out of favor.
I will always remember how this song made me feel better about myself. My older brother was small and built muscular and had girls falling over him. I was a head and shoulders taller than him but felt very awkward because I grew tall and big at an early age. This song made me proud of my size but did nothing to improve my problem with girls.lol😳
Seems like it should have been the other way around. You being tall and big...did you eventually find the right girl or did she find you or is she still out there?
@@alpha-omega2362 I eventually found my soul mate and we have been married over 46yrs. Thank you for your reply please stay safe.
What can I say? A great song !!!! With a message !! Stay away from mines !!!!
An all-time classic.
My joy of knowing the best of men that God created put me in a place to tell the universe of my step- dad Jim Brady from Dunlap Iowa there has never been a better man, in my opinion!!! He knew love, he was love.
A number 1 hit
Jimmy Dean,,great American,down to earth!!👍🇺🇸
This was one of my dad's favourite songs.
This song was number one on the charts the week I was born in December of 1961. Ironically my name happens to be John as well. Ten years later Jimmy Dean had a role in “Diamonds Are Forever” the last of the Sean Connery James Bond movies.
Sounds like my life born November 61 my name is john they call me bigjohn am 6ft 6 255 loved this song from the first time I heard it
OMG! One of Jimmy Deans best song. Always makes me cry to listen to this song but I love it.
Jimmy Dean was born the same year as my dad. I grew up hearing about him being a first cousin on my dads side of the family but never had the pleasure of meeting him. I was 13 when he came out with this song and has always been one of my favorites!
There is always someone related

When I was a kid the folks took us to the state fair rodeo something of a shock we were staying up past our bed times. Yes kids in those days we had a set time to be in bed. Jimmy Dean was the performer that night, I don't know about my younger siblings but that night was magical. BBJ still brings a tear to my eye.
Such a iconic song!
It ranks right up there with Sixteen Tons.
I was a toddler when this was a hit on the radio. I remember the song being played quite a bit during the summers of the mid 1960's though.
Right now we're coming up on Memorial Day. I'm supposing that "Big John" was a must play on pop and country radio stations on Memorial Days back then. I can still hear it on those AM only radios. FM radio, especially FM stereo radio was not in use then. If so not many would have had FM radios yet. Detroit didn't start putting them in cars until the late 1960's. I believe Ford Motor Co. was the leader in that.
My grandma "Mama" gave me this 45 when they took it off the jukebox in her restaurant when I was probably 6 or 7..I loved it
I had it as a Child and played it a lot as a kid, this is the First Time I have seen Jimmy do this song.
One amazing clip of the original recording👏👏👏
Just great, many thanks for sharing ... remember hearing this as a boy
i knew a big bad john although the the only bad was he was no one to mess with and at his funeral came accolades from all over the country fro footballers ,canoeists and baseball players that he had coached and helped along during his spare time .this song brings tears to my eyes and memories of a man to look up to
Loved this song
My wife has always enjoyed this descriptive song growing up, but especially since December 21, 2000 when her younger brother John “Jody” was murdered at work in Alabama while he and his boss were closing the store that his lady boss owned. Two males came into the store as he was finishing up mopping the floor in the back, when he noticed his boss was behaving differently, so he put the mop aside and walked slowly to the counter where the cash resister was and saw the gun pointed at her, and according to her, John “Jody” held up his hands and went behind the counter and opened the cash register, then stepped back slightly in front of his boss with his hand raised. One of the male robbers grabbed the money and the other male holding the gun shot my wife’s brother in the heart, then they both left the store. On Christmas morning the police called the family to let everyone know that they had arrested both male murdering thieves. His boss told the family that John “Jody” had protected her by standing slightly in front of her, which she said was no surprise to her because he was always protective of her, and always taking on the heaviest of the work.
One of my favorites during that time.
He also made the best breakfast sausage on the market.
Love me some Jimmy Dean Sausage.
I was 8 yrs old when I saw this on the Ed Sullivan show-Watching this right now amazes me because I still remember the lyrics after all these years.
Boy does that bring back memories!!
Thank goodness Big Jon saved this man or we wouldn't have any Jimmy Dean sausage for breakfast in the morning 😋. Thanks Big Jon. 🍳☕🐔🐖😉👍
Love this song
That's America. Awesome
My Dad loved this song.
Mine too. I just teared up remembering & listening.
Good taste is timeless
So many great songs from that period.
Great song
Haven't heard this song in at least a half a century....he makes a great sausage. The ed Sullivan show was a must see on Sunday? nights ! Live from NYC ! Miss my hometown!
A song you could never forget Thank you patriot God Bless you
My granddaughter, now 6yrs old, loved this when she was 2, 3, and 4yrs old. I 'sang' it to her at bedtime whenever I could; she also loved Ernie Ford's "16 Tons". Now, well, 😢 she's not into those, but I'll cherish those memories. ❤l
I played this classic for my music group. Thanks for sharing 👍⛏️
What an enjoyable tune! It makes me want to eat some sausage.
This was real situations in the mining, I’ve carried out injured men, and seen many things under there. Thankful to be alive.
CLASSIC! 🇺🇸❤️💪🏽
Loved this so ng
When I was I child I got to meet him. His fingers where as big as hot dogs. And so tall.
Great song!!
Awesome song on The Ed Sullivan Show!
I WAS AMAZED WHEN A FRIEND OF MINE SAID THAT IT WAS THE ACTOR THAT PLAYED WILLORD WHITE IN THE BOND FILM "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER".MY GOD I WAS ONLY 8 YO WHEN THIS RECORD CAME OUT.I'M NOW 68 YO.
"every morning at nine he would drink his coffee and eat sausage of mine, big john"
In Diamonds Are Forever too.
I have know of this song most of my life, however, until tonight, I have never listened to it all. What a fantastic ballad! Thanks for sharing.
best version with the deep bass !
This man looks nothing like I expected. I have heard this song for a lot of years.
And, you never saw Jimmy Dean? Criminy.
21 year old man and I just found this gem, y'all had some great music back then
Best days of my life
Best sounds of love ..
From my childhood!! ❤
Watching this the morning after Jimmy's birthday in 2022.
AWESOME !.....Love this tune...Always have and always will
Never seen the film clip before but the song brings back so many memories.......thanks!
Iconic.
I prayed one night that God would give us back this version of America. I guess sometimes, the answer to prayers is No.
After this hit a radio DJ named Phil McClean had a hit in a similar vein with "Small Sad Sam"
I remember when this song first appeared. Nothing like it had ever been done before, so it had major impact.
Jimmy Dean was a handsome guy with an affable personality. Very easy-going and easy to like. More than any other issue of his, this song brought him cross-over fame and really gave a push to his career.
He was also an astute businessman: He well knew the music business is Very Fickle; today's hit maker is tomorrow's unknown, thus, he got into the sausage business. Not a sexy product, but one everybody wants, all the time....
Awesome story, awesome song, well done Jimmy Dean. Just listen to the words., It's a bit of a tearjerker.
😂

I loved this song as a little kid. Used to cry
Awesome.
John Wayne always springs to mind when I hear this song.
Loved it in 1961 , love it in 2021.
The hammer swinging in the background , was Big John working down in the mine. Listen and you can hear it.
Jimmy Dean didn't think of it that way when it was put in there it was just to fill a space where something was needed , but hero worship turned it into a man swinging a 16 pound
Sludgehammer in the bottom of a
Mine.
Must have been 4 years old...DANCING to this in the kitchen. I remember thinking something to the effect of, " Hey, I really LIKE whatever this is!".
I remember hearing this as a small child , thank you for the clip 🇬🇧🏴🇬🇧
Definitive version of a Great song.
