This video was shot by Jack Irwin for Silvertone Recording in Nashville, TN. The song speaks for itself but the ending always surprises, despite knowing the outcome. It has been recorded by Emmylou Harris, Paul K and The Weathermen and others.
Something happened. Back there all those centuries ago. Something not easily believed or easily dismissed. Two thousand years of glory and horror, of love and hate, of beauty and violence have only made those long ago events murkier and more enigmatic. But nothing comes of nothing. Something happened. The Stone is an attempt to address those events. From varying points of view (a con man, a donkey, a murderer and a soldier), a story is told. A picture struggles to emerge. Nothing is proved. Nothing is denied.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but to me this is a deeply reverent and religious song.
Yaeh I pictured Judas telling his tale..
It's possible to read it as an ironic comment about how the authentically good can attract unworthy and deeply dishonest followers.

This is the stuff of songwriting genius! Discovered this song as done by Emmylou Harris. As other commenters, I am sorry I only really find out who he was after he was gone. Need to go back and find other songs he wrote and performed.

l just read this troubadour died on stage. He did't collapse, fellow mustangs help lay him down once they realized he had passed. He died with his boots on. He belongs to the ages, RIP David

This song, man... what a well written, unique perspective account of an account many people are familiar with. I was raised catholic and this song was like hearing the story of Jesus for the first time
