My only sibling and brother died of suicide on January 11th of this year. It has been devasting to my parents. However people have shown up en masse to support us. I heard this song about two years ago. It was incredibly moving. However it has taken on New meaning in my life. Thank you for sharing it with the world. RIP Cory Matthew Lambert. Sept 25th, 1981 to January 11th, 2024. You will be greatly missed.
I am so sorry for your loss. I took the liberty of looking up your brother's obituary. Sounds like he positively impacted a lot of lives and left the world a better place. To quote Ralph Waldo Emerson: " ....to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. ". I am a survivor of suicide x4; I can't say I know how you feel, but I think I have a clue. Take care of yourself and your family, while you keep him in your heart. My condolences and best wishes to you.
Lizzy McAlpine's cover is beautiful. I believe her target demographic is different from Dawes, so it's a great chance to share their music with a different audience.
amazing how much more i like this song solo and acoustic. i already liked it quite a bit. so lucky i finally get to see him with the avett brothers at red rocks this summer. it will definitely be a highlight of 2024… brilliant lyrics, dawes!
it is absolutely incomprehensible how every time you listen to this song, you realize how much more and more enlightening it is. The first few times, I thought, "eh," but now I am dumbfounded. This song is literally a masterpiece.
I totally agree that the more I hear this tune the more I am humbled. They have a few songs like this They are a rightous act. They deliver in their live performance as well
When a song writer can put a picture in your head with a small number of words and bring a tear to your eye...... that's a rare quality these days.......and this guy's got it.
Adalberto Rodriguez - To quote Morgan Freeman's character at the end of _Se7en…_ "Ernest Hemingway once wrote: 'The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for.' "I agree with the second part."
The last verse reminded me of something I heard on the radio: "In my humdrum life, the daily battle hasn't been good versus evil. It's hardly so epic. Most days, my real battle is doing good versus doing nothing. ... I've come to believe that while I wait to make a grand heroic gesture, I should just stick to the small inconveniences that let me share in life's inevitable, occasional calamity.
I've always teared up anytime I heard this song but I heard it today for the first time since I lost my husband, and now I'm a total mess. This song is just beautiful and I love this acoustic version.
I had heard this song probably 50 times, I loved the sound, but didn't really pay attention to the lyrics. Had it on one of my "Favorite" playlists on Spotify. I was dealing with a lot of emotional trauma, and was binge cleaning my basement when this song came on; and for whatever reason as soon as he said "Setting out to join a demographic" I realized what he was talking about. By the time the police officer asks what he is doing it for, I was literally on the ground completely releasing everything I was holding on to. I have never in my life felt so unbelievably vulnerable in my life. After listening to the whole song 5 or 6 times and allowing myself to really let the music speak, and really feel what was happening in the song, and in my life I felt lighter, cleansed almost. As an audiophile and songwriter I am very attuned to emotional energy in music. I just had never had a song impact me in that way.
I suffer from depression and regularly consider suicide I’ve been in therapy awhile and my life is good But a dark cloud follows me And that first part really hit me so heavily
I "liked" your response, because I am glad to see you talking about this. I hope you are in a good place now and you and your therapist can keep chipping away at your dark cloud to keep you balanced. Take care and always be gentle with yourself. Signed, A 35+ Year Vet of Depression
I haven't considered suicide nearly as much as I'd prayed for immediate death in the height of my disabling chronic illnesses; but otherwise, I can relate. Keep at the therapy, and at the fight in general. Silence the cautious urge not to let yourself get too happy. Stay open; and keep letting others in. Every second we breathe is full of purpose already, but _especially_ when we make it so. You are also not alone in this fight, no matter what it may feel like. Idk how the RUclips DM system works now…but if you can, and you need to, feel free to reach out to me.
I once seriously considered suicide when I was 14. I never told anyone. I found an old gun under my Dad's dresser. I didn't even know how to load it. Or if it would even work. I opened up the case. I was on my knees looking at it. I just started crying uncontrollably and went to my room and crawled into my bed. My families house was 2 stories and my room was in the top corner. Everyone was downstairs getting ready for dinner and doing whatever.
Slippery When Wet, John Hiatt, who has struggled with depression for years, wrote a song about this: "and you can't run away from The Nagging Dark/ it's there with you everywhere, it's in your heart/ it finishes everything that you start/ oh you can't run away from The Nagging Dark....,"
This is maybe the most beautiful song on RUclips. It’s incredible. And recorded in Bristol. The old man standing in the buffet line stanza is incredible. Great writing. Amazing.
This is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful, touching songs I've ever heard ( and I have had over 7 decades of every genre of music to choose from.) Just leaves me speechless. Thank you so much for sharing this acoustic version of the song. Nothing to hide behind - just a fantastic voice and great guitar picking.
I never had a dog growing up. I got married last year and my wife and I got a dog. I can't imagine losing him. That lyric drove me to tears when I heard it driving home.
My favorite verse is the final one. Especially the end of it: “So on that day in late September, it’s not some stupid little ring, I’m gettin a little bit of everything.”
It's music like this that reminds me that I'm still young and have much to learn. That all my inexperience and ignorance is not just my downfall but also my upbringing that makes me who I am
I just heard this on the radio, quickly looked it up on their playlist.... and was surprised it wasn't Jackson Browne. I just love finding new artists. This was so sweet and such simple yet beautiful chords.
this damn song has haunted me during hard times...during good times,.never been able to find it when i wanted to, but it found me again..synchroninisity at its best.
As a teenager, you think the greatest opening line is "there's a lady whose sure all that glitters is gold and she's buying a stairway to heaven." You become an adult, hear this, and you KNOW it's "With his back against the San Fransisco traffic ... "
This is an example of a song that "works" so well because the lyrics are awesome. That along with a catchy sounding melody makes it a real winner. He's being interviewed on the Charlie Rose show tonight.
I just recently discovered Dawes, and the most I find, the more enraptured I become. Coming close to filling the void left by the passing of Warren Zevon. Thank you, Taylor Goldsmith.
I discovered them about 2 years ago, and I think I listened to "North Hills" every day for the subsequent few months. Taylor seems to ooze Jackson Browne for me...
I get the Warren Zevon (the god!) reference. But my first thought was a cross between David Bowie's Space Oddity and Gordon Lightfoot's Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
For me, this is a song about the kind of people we know or may meet or may pass through our lives unnoticed, Everyday people dealing with everyday joys & sorrows. Myself included. You live & you do the best that you can. For some reason it puts me in mind of Thoreau's verse, ' “the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation''.
Heard this song on Lithium on SiriusXM the other day, what a find. Thanks to Tom Morello and his show for putting the spotlight on Dawes, someone I may not have found otherwise. And yes, in Malibu people can write great lyrics 😉

I saw him sing this at Beach Road Weekend on Martha's Vineyard this past weekend. He stops the heart. Then Bahamas got up there with him and I realized how lucky we are that they are around to speak to our hearts.

A friend of mine in Second Life sang this song at her show...blew me away .... .. great song ! I love songs that rip your heart out of your chest like this one does.
Had the great pleasure and honour to meet these boys in Manchester, UK this year. Great, humble approachable lads, as well as being one the most amazing current bands in the world today. This song is perfect! It reminds me a little of These Days by Jackson Browne, which ain't a bad thing. Can't wait for the album!
My fav' acoustic song in years, came across Dawes a year or so ago. Love this song, Taylor's a fkn amazing songwriter! Love the album "Nothing Is Wrong"

Greatest lyric of all time. Glad Lizzy is bringing it to bigger audiences
Who is Lizzy? It's amazing and perfectly written as it is, who is Lizzy and how are they bringing it to bigger audiences?
Nevermind, after a bit of googling it's another artist with no capital letters in their song names and covers being shoved in people's faces
@@ssrrss321
Agreed. It’s only a good thing IF it inspires people to listen to Dawes’ version.
@@screwyootube1agreed, and Dawes is doing just fine without generic covers of their songs

Well put and completely agree
Spot On!
I totally agree that the more I hear this tune the more I am humbled. They have a few songs like this
They are a rightous act. They deliver in their live performance as well
Agreed!!!!
that's the best lyric writing I've heard in a long time.
Brought tears to my eyes. Do you have any recommendations on bands with a great lyric writing?
Ali Hanif I know this is kind of late but look up Bright Eyes! They’re pretty depressing but the lyrics in most songs are great.
Nic Gibson I watched a dude play this at an open mic on Tuesday and had to check it out. You took the words out of my mouth. Mind blowing lyrics.
Vestiges and Claws is an album w good lyrics
One thing I love about Dawes is that lyrically it’s unapologetically sincere. Every song I’ve heard is just describing very real very human feelings
When a song writer can put a picture in your head with a small number of words and bring a tear to your eye...... that's a rare quality these days.......and this guy's got it.
The only person that does that for me is John prine and now this guy, just goes to show
@@zakaryheinemeyer4881Go hear yourself some Noah Gundersen
Jackson Browne
I feel like this song is about getting up after you fall down and accepting that life is hard but too beautiful to give up on.

"Ernest Hemingway once wrote: 'The world is a fine place, and worth fighting for.'

I suffer from depression and regularly consider suicide
