so I'm sure I've got a bias, but I have Never seen a healthy parent/kid relationship when "they're more a friend than a parent". especially when the kids are that young- it just reeks of "no, you can't have boundries, I do too get access to every facet of your life"
the 3 here seemed to add a good splash of "what, I'm just being honest, don't be so sensitive" for extra blech

Mom is SUPER young. She's 39. She had her daughter at 18, which suggests she had a shotgun wedding. I have a feeling Mom missed out on all of the excitemnt of planning a wedding for herself. Now she's being hit in the face with it. At the same time, her daughter is getting married which means she's 39 and OLD. That has to hit HARD. That's WAY worse than a 40th birthday (which is also looming). I can understand why mom is an emotional trainwreck, and regressing to teenage behavior. This is where she was at age 17.

Yep, I did the same at my wedding because my handful of bridesmaids were all so different I thought it's be best to let THEM select the style they felt most comfortable with, which would also make it more likely they'd be able to wear the dress again. EDIT (forgot to add that they DID NOT have full run of the store, we agreed on their max budget/price in advance & that narrowed down the options they were presented with & plus there were only 3. Tho I was in 1 w/6 but it was just slight variations on 3 styles.) Each one of them looked soooo good & also loved their dress. But I also was a bridesmaid who just showed up, shut up & got fitted for the dress, & never wore it again; different people different weddings, it's your day girl, & if your my friend, relative, or soon to be in-law, the most I'll say is "if your happy, I'm happy" & I just won't ever tell you that I BURNED that dress cuz NOBODY should be subject to that hideous monstrosity EVER AGAIN! In Nigeria the second bride is how we handle bridesmaids dresses (sort of). The bride gives her bridal party fabric or a colour that is of the pattern and texture that she likes and the brides give them to tailors to make whatever design they want for the wedding.
Groom does a similar thing, usually the bride & groom wear specific colours that are different to each other.

When it comes to professional fashion designers, you do not hesitate to tear a bitch up because you hold them to the high standards that they claim to be selling... but when it comes to these normal, everyday women choosing wedding garb, you are so kind and supportive. A lot of fashion influencers cannot make that distinction; they think that holding everyone to THE HIGHEST of standards is what makes them a fashion expert. The back on that pink dress on the thumbnail is ADORABLE.
Also, finally something innocent we can all get behind hating: ugly bridesmaids dresses. 😂
I will never understand why some need their friends in the most unflattering dress. Yellow makes you look older (makes your teeth and whites of the eyes look yellow, which happens with age). Just give your friends a color and maybe a material and let them choose what they think looks best.
I saw a bride who had EVERYONE in white and the only difference was her bouquet. Every flower in it represented a bridesmaid, so they all had a different color, which came together in the most beautiful bouquet. I only saw a few photos, but the potential of getting the girls to match their flower and color scheme would be so fun. Then to tie into the decor and space looked interesting.

As a former bridal consultant, the bride who wanted all her girls to choose different styles was the most difficult. It wasn't choosing the dresses, it was ensuring the colors would work. Even if all the dresses were the same designer and same fabric, dye lots were never guaranteed. Many years ago, we had a line of bridesmaids separates. They could choose the color(s), fabrics, top/neckline/sleeve, and skirt length/fullness and so the colors would be guaranteed. Today, there are respectable and reliable websites that ensure dresses are the same colors , even if they are different styles.
As for actually seeing the bride's vision, I had one lovely bride who wanted red and yellow dresses for her two bridesmaids. After confirming the colors, I brought out a dress in each color. The bride looked at her mom and said, "You're right. They look like ketchup and mustard bottles." 😆 She was wonderful, though!

my response to weddings at 21 is eternally "who has wedding money?!" unless it's a pregnancy situation and the family is religious I cannot fathom having that cash available at such a young age. My parents would think me insane to marry at 21 and never consent to it ergo, no cash to spend at the wedding junction.

I got married at 20 and we just didn’t care about a big wedding. It was cheaper because we were in a more rural area, maybe 1,500 dollars total. The dress was 500. My husband and I were just ready to start that chapter of our lives and didn’t want to delay it for a big wedding, expensive dress, etc. That was 13 years ago.
There have been times in the few years after when I was like, shoot that was my one chance for a big party and fancy pictures and all that and I didn’t do it! But I don’t regret doing it smaller, instead of saving up for a wedding, we bought a house and took a bunch of trips together over the years we would have been saving up for the wedding. We like to travel so our priority was always going to be traveling together over spending money on a big party.

I was married at 21. When we went to the city hall to get the license, the clerk was somebody I knew. She told me later that the couple who came in behind us was someone whose older sister went to school with my 19-year-old brother and they were talking about me after I left, saying that I was so old they thought I was going to be an old maid.

Jeez people getting married at 21. I’m 22 and have never dated or even kissed anyone yet. I couldn’t even imagine being married last year or a few years from now. I have a friend who’s a year older, has a lot of dating experience, and is talking about getting married next year and it still blows me away but it’s not as shocking as so many of the people I know from high school straight up having families at this age. I’m still trying to develop as a person on my own, there’s so much of my life left to go, it’s just baffling to me that so many people feel ready for any of that this young (though most of the kids I know of have been unplanned, I thank my obsessive knowledge of almost types of contraception for not having to deal with that even though I haven’t had opportunity for a kid to come about anyway lol). My 77 year old landlady (divorced) got married at around 25 because her mother insisted she’d be “left on the shelf” and be an old maid, she always says if she could go back she wouldn’t have gotten married at all, let alone so young. My parents got together when my mom was 19 and married when she was 25 but that definitely didn’t end well for them.

I had a vision of everyone wears a dress of their choosing in the same colour. The men were told black suit in any style with a white shirt. My husband and I provided them with matching ties that coordinated with the ladies burgundy dress colour. The ladies all got black velvet wraps ( winter wedding) We also had junior bridesmaids that wore green and burgundy floral prints and a flower girl in green velvet that matched her mother's dress ( my sister in law stood up with my husband and the groomsmen so she wore black velvet. Mother of the bride had a green satin dress in the same green as the flower girls but the same style as my maid of honor. It was beautiful. If you have different ages or body types letting them all pick an appropriate style for them makes everyone more comfortable.

I’ve always been wondering, why those dresses that are specifically bridesmaids dresses or wedding dresses, are always so ugly? I have never seen any dress in these shows that were looking better than OK. And yet they are so disproportionately expensive. Can anybody tell me the reason behind this? I mean at this point I would rather just go shopping at an average fashion store like Zara or H&M etc. and pick out dresses for my bridesmaids there, and they would look just as good, at a fraction of the price.
So again if anyone has some more info about why on earth people throw out every last bit of taste in fashion once they walk in to a bridesmaids/wedding dress store, I would love to know!😅🫶

    • @tkps
      @tkps 3 месяца назад +1

I think the second you have a bridal shop and use the word bridesmaid dress the price automatically rises. As for taste, after seeing the UK traveller wedding/bridesmaid dresses normal bridesmaid dresses look tame in comparison.

I agree. I haven’t found any of these dresses visually pleasing in any way:/ i’m not sure when these were filmed so the year might have an effect on how the dresses look, but i truly find most of them ugly, boring, plain and the best of them are just ok. I’ve seen prettier dresses at H&M or online stores like zalando and such

It’s important to remember that these are 2000s southern bridesmaids dresses- it does not appeal to a lot of people. But the fabrics used in bridal shops dresses are significantly higher quality than H and M. A department store like Dillards might give you something comparable, but it would run you about the same and then you don’t get the whole ‘day out with friends’ experience of a private fitting like showed in say yes.

I know I will not have a typical wedding dress or experience.. sadly family deaths and parents deaths have put up pause on our wedding plans. Everyone calls us, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, which is fine but we do want to get married. I’m just not sure the attire what we should do at this point if you have any ideas that would be amazing. We probably won’t have any bridal party because of our age, but we just wanna show our love for each other, but I’m not sure the kind of dress to wear.

Me sitting in Eastern Europe where most people already have a dress to wear to a wedding (no matter if they are the bridesmaids or not) and wear whatever the fck they want bcs the bride has no say in it unless she would be the one paying for it, which in my country is not the case, most of us aren't that rich. The bride stands out anyway since she is the only person wearing white.

What is common for weddings now is for the bride to tell her girls a color, material, and length from one brand. It is rare for the bridesmaids to wear the exact same dress. In fact, the new trend is for the bride to give her girls a color scheme to choose from and they communicate to create a cohesive look.

I think some observations I've made of SYTTD bridesmaids eps are:
    1. Brides are getting married before their brains have finished developing so their ideas make sense from a very youthful decision making lens. Hopefully the wedding days go so so well that in the future even though the brides would make different choices they still feel incredibly happy with their wedding choices!
    2. Mom's are too outdated in their views and can't assimilate to new styles (while brides try to get too creative and modern)
    3. Mom's maybe had older women making wedding choices for them they couldn't push back on. Plus being mom's they're likely used to making these big event decisions for their daughters that it's hard to recognize their authority doesn't apply to wedding picks
    4. I think some issues mom's have is that transitioning of daughter finally becoming an independent adult and the major part of their lives (the mom's) is over. And that's hard! the stress and joy that comes from motherhood makes it tough to recognize its over and forces you to face time.
    5. Mom's and daughter's who are more friends than parent child have messy relationships and family therapy is needed. Daughter's seem like abuse victims sometimes and mom's seem mentally ill, typically in a personality disorder type of way

My bridesmaids had identical dresses with different necklines made especially for their body types so that they all felt beautiful and comfortable in what they were wearing. They weren’t wildly different, but different enough to suit their bodies and personalities.
For example, one allowed for a maternity / breastfeeding bra to be worn comfortably, and the top could be unclipped on both sides so my three-month-old nephew (who was my page boy with his Daddy holding him in his arms as they walked down the aisle) could be fed with ease.
When done right it can look lovely. It was also a popular thing to do in the 2010s! We were married in 2011.

My bridesmaids dresses (back in the 80s!) were all the same color and fabric (pale mint linen) but different styles. I was in a Laura Ashley cream silk dress, very plain and simple and borrowed from my sister, and we got their dresses at, I believe, someplace like Marshalls or TJ Maxx. Very pale mint colored linen, tea length. I only had 3 bridesmaids and one maid-of-honor. I thought we were the bomb LOL. Actually, the wedding dress was truly beautiful.

My son recently got married and they did a similar thing. All floor length burgundy dresses in the same material but being different sizes, chose empire waists as the most flattering. Two chose spaghetti straps, one wider straps (chest) and the matron thicker off the shoulder straps/sleeves. Together and with the bride looked lovely. (The boys and one girl looked great too). Letting the bridesmaids choose their preferred straps/sleeves for comfort level was what the bride wanted and they all matched well.

For my wedding, I let my bridesmaids pick whatever dress they felt comfortable in, just had to be all the same color. It worked perfectly, so sometimes it can. But my bridesmaids are also pretty chill and low key and definitely wanted me to like it too, so I guess it depends on the type of people you have in your bridal party!
