@@doodletownpiperssame here. I loved this album more than life itself at 16 and it’s stuck with me. All the others apart from blue are borderline unlistenable. It’s an entirely different band.
pinkerton is an album where the more you learn about rivers & the band's context when it was being made, the better it gets. also i will defend this being their best album till the day i die
the lyrics are the best part! they are so icky and cringy and honest. even to this day there are not a lot of lyrics like these. specially after the commercial success of the first album, this took a lot of balls (and almost ended the band)
I think you'd like the blue album a lot more based on your reactions to a lot of the lyrics here. I personally really like these lyrics but I can see how they're not for everyone. Rivers was very depressed and lonely when he wrote this so that explains stuff like Across the Sea or Pink Triangle. I think the blue album is a more solid album anyways.
Blue Album is one of the best albums ever and Weezer influenced so many bands in alt rock and emo rock after. You can hear a little of their sound in Mitski and Kero Kero Bonito.
The singer went through some issues around this album.... the "old man cane" to put into context, he had surgery because one leg was longer than the other...he had some debilitating pain...he couldn't do jack for awhile, so that's why he felt like an old man and wanted to act his age and cut lose
I think a lot of people pass on weezer because they kind of fell off in recent years (except for a few random good albums like white & ok human), but the first two albums they released are some of the greatest rock albums of the 90s. absolute peak.
I feel like what makes this album so great is when juxtaposed to their Blue Album. It's a yin yang relationship between the 2 albums. Blue's layered, positive, and well produced. Pinkerton is raw, sloppy, and angsty. 2 incredibly important albums in the 90's. After that, the band is very hit and miss, but overall, their discography is an interesting one.
think a Lamb as Effigy by Sprain reaction would be tremendous. Favorite album of the last 5 or so years, so dark, so confusing, interesting, huge, small, absolutely love. Def for any fan of swans and post rock
Here's some albums I think you'll have fun reacting to: - Shinola Vol. 1 by Ween (Another very weird ween album that is a phenomenal b-side collection with multiple different styles) - Please Mr. Lostman by The Pillows (yet another pillows recommendation from me but it's because they're just that good, this one is more of a chill album from them while still having some very high energy moments) (Also Strange Chameleon is phenomenal) - Everything Will Be Alright In The End by Weezer (a very solid return to form from weezer after being pretty hit or miss for a while with no real bad songs imo)
The Blue Album is an all-timer, but also kind of messed up Rivers (lead vocalist/guitarist) for a bit. He enrolled at Harvard between the Blue Album and Pinkerton, and it's understandable he wanted to switch it up despite the potential cringiness. What is funny is he did marry a woman of Japanese heritage in 2006, and they're still together.
also wrote the song Mirror Image which is one of the most beautiful love songs ive ever heard, especially hearing it from rivers after the bitterness and how pathetic his writing is around pinkerton
my Smags wishlist: weezer - maladroit jimmy eat world - bleed american sigur ros - takk system of a down - hypnotize brand new - daisy the strokes - first impressions of earth title fight - shed radiohead - the king of limbs blink 182 - blink 182 :) in no particular order. cheers bro.
Side note: Pinkerton is Weezer's second album. Darker, less produced and more vulnerable than their first album (blue background). This album was ranked 3rd worse album by rolling stone magazine in 1996. However, this album aged like fine wine. Fans claim this as their best album next to the blue album. And this album was claimed as starting the 3rd wave of emo music.
I'd love to see you check out Kino, theyre a rock band from the 80s soviet union, i would recommend their last albums for a first listen like the black album or a star called sun, their sound can get pretty dark but theyre definitely a vibe
Another banger, a lot of tracks weirded me out at first, but they grew on me over time. Pixies fourth album Bossanova is my recommendation assuming you have interest in them still, my favorite album by them
Shoulda went w yr gut and did the Blue album. This is a crucial band to start at the beginning with. Seriously one of the most influential albums of the entire 90s decade. Plus, there’s a lot of lyrics for you to give your hot takes all over. Guaranteed to be video for the ages.
I WON thank you recs: Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes (Unique folk-punk, early 80s college/alt rock, very catchy) Teenage Fanclub - Bandwagonesque (Really catchy power pop, slightly shoegazey, same label as The Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine) Quasi - Featuring "Birds" (Awesome Built to Spill-esque/Pacific Northwest indie rock, same label as Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Duster etc) The Breeders - Pod (Unique early 90s alt rock, Steve Albini prod, was in Kurt Cobain's top 3 albums of all time) Slint - Tweez (Sick late 80s post-hardcore/math rock, also Steve Albini prod) Pinback - Pinback (Very chill and creative late 90s indie rock) Modest Mouse - This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About (Amazing album, basically as good as The Lonesome Crowded West) Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (Insanely badass aura filled production and vocals, extremely unique) The Prodigy - The Fat Of The Land (badass big-beat dance music) Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand (lovely 90's lo-fi) Hella - Hold Your Horse Is (Math Rock with the drummer from Death Grips, before he was in Death Grips) Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain (Absolutely perfect 90's indie rock album)
Let's go he did it, the man, the myth, the LEGEND (also you should listen to "I just threw out the love of my life" by Weezer, it's in the deluxe edition, no need to react but it's a cool addition to the album I think)💯💯
Helluva record to pick for your first Weezer album lmao. You should totally check out either their first self titled (called "The Blue Album" by fans) or Maladroit
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MY GUY a few recommendations: Ghosts of the Great Highway - Sun Kil Moon SMILE :D - Porter Robinson (pop-punk, pop, electronic) Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
Nice vid man 😃. It would be really cool to see you react to red burns by standing in the corner, it’s this really cool experimental sound collage album I think you’d really enjoy it based on your previous reviews. Also there’s not many reactions to it on RUclips so I think it would be cool to see.
I really think that this album is so interesting, and maybe a difficult way to get into Weezer. Because many of the songs are incredibly personal and raw. And the critical reaction at the time scared Cuomo away from actually being real in his lyrics again. So you're getting, IMHO, the most authentic album they ever made, but also a silly album that is trying to soften the blow of how mean/angry/hurt each track is.
literally adore this album. its so soooososo good an album that has a similar cover and literally stole a riff from this album is wetdream by willy rodriguez. LISTEN TO IT SMAGS. YOU KNOW U WANNA.
listened to this when i was in highschool in the 2010s. lots of the songs from this 90s album i just related with. in hindsight, a lot of the lyrics are cringy and lets say problematic, even along with blue, but theres also an honesty and authenticity there that i still resonate with. there are feelings in there i dont think a lot of bands could capture without feeling too aesthetic - el scorcho's im falling for you is a highlight. i also really like the melodies and the production. it just comes across as very genuine to me. across the sea's build up and changes are subtle but peak music for me as well. the rough spots from when i first heard the album are still there, but its still an all-time favorite and classic. love your expressions on some of these songs haha
Still here, still recommending Kagayaki. Pinkerton is probably my favorite weezer album, the way they mix the rough production with fantastic hooks and harmonies is super cool, although the lyrics certainly can be off-putting.
I love this record but I also recognize it is absurd and watching Smags' facial reactions during certain songs is GOLD.
smags does NOT fw weezer
This being your first Weezer album is wild, jumping in at the deep end
I think the deep end would probably be Black album..now THATS scary
This was my first and still favorite Weezer album
@@doodletownpipers black album?!
@@doodletownpiperssame here. I loved this album more than life itself at 16 and it’s stuck with me. All the others apart from blue are borderline unlistenable. It’s an entirely different band.
I listened to green first lol
Holy moly wasn’t expecting this but I’m so glad he reacted to this!
so sad it didn't click for you. this album got me through some rough times but I still have so much fun with it every listen.
pinkerton is an album where the more you learn about rivers & the band's context when it was being made, the better it gets. also i will defend this being their best album till the day i die
I'm so old I wore this cassette tape out in high school.
Yes absolutely listen to the blue album! Everything will be all right in the end and The White album are also really good.
You should definitely check out their albums:
Blue album 1994
Everything Will Be Alright In The End 2014
White Album 2016
And
Ok Human 2021
Would also include Maladroit in there too
Also Green!

The album where theyre all standing up is 10/10 bro
Pinkerton is better thought 🤷♂️
I don’t think Make Believe is a 10, but go off
The singer went through some issues around this album.... the "old man cane" to put into context, he had surgery because one leg was longer than the other...he had some debilitating pain...he couldn't do jack for awhile, so that's why he felt like an old man and wanted to act his age and cut lose

“Nerdy as fuck”
nailed it
don't leave foreign stationary around this man 🚨🚨🚨
Definitely gotta do the Blue Album now! Less cringey lyrical moments for sure and even better guitar
my Smags wishlist:
weezer - maladroit
jimmy eat world - bleed american

system of a down - hypnotize
brand new - daisy
the strokes - first impressions of earth
title fight - shed
radiohead - the king of limbs
blink 182 - blink 182
:) in no particular order.
cheers bro.
Weezer’s got great solos
You should really listen to their debut album (the Blue album), as it's great.
Greatest album of all time idc
Side note: Pinkerton is Weezer's second album. Darker, less produced and more vulnerable than their first album (blue background). I agree with that one person in chat. You should do Clarity by Jimmy Eat World. It’s an essential Emo album
It’s an extremely common take that Weezer’s first two albums are their best. Pinkerton is their second album. The Blue Album is their first.
yeahhh!!!!! do the blue album next!!!!!!!!!!
yo we straight BUSSIN with this reaction y’all
He kinda dissed the whole album which is sad 😔
Seeing Smags say 'weezer' is so surreal
Another banger, a lot of tracks weirded me out at first, but they grew on me over time. Pixies fourth album Bossanova is my recommendation assuming you have interest in them still, my favorite album by them
You definitely should do the Blue Album. More guitar solos than you know what to do with. And they save the best one for last.
Shoulda went w yr gut and did the Blue album. This is a crucial band to start at the beginning with. Seriously one of the most influential albums of the entire 90s decade. Plus, there’s a lot of lyrics for you to give your hot takes all over. Guaranteed to be video for the ages.
Pinkerton?? Like pinkman? Like Jesse pinkman? From breaking bad???? WEEZER BREAKING BAD😱😱🤯🤯🤯
JESSE, WE NEED TO WEEZER 🗣️🔥🧪

I’d add:

Let's go he did it, the man, the myth, the LEGEND (also you should listen to "I just threw out the love of my life" by Weezer, it's in the deluxe edition, no need to react but it's a cool addition to the album I think)💯💯
The deluxe edition feels like Pinkerton 2
devotion, tragic girl, so many bangers on that deluxe edition
Yes! Review PJ Harvey - To Bring You My Love next!
Smag's face at THAT line in Butterfly looked like he was a talk show host when his guest suddenly starts saying some vile shit lmao
To me this album is a testimony to all the dumb stuff we do when we are young, and the acceptance in the end that we must grow up.
Helluva record to pick for your first Weezer album lmao. You should totally check out either their first self titled (called "The Blue Album" by fans) or Maladroit
Tigers Jaw self titled plss

politely yet urgently asking for dead man’s party by oingo boingo 😐 80s new-wave bangers
Across the sea is my favorite Weezer song if I don't pay attention to any of the lyrics. Sonically it's amazing.
blue album yes
listening to pinkerton before the blue album is unhinged
I can definitely feel the Soundgarden reaction coming!
Wasn’t expecting this but FUCK YEAH
I honestly think listening to the deluxe version makes this album make more sense for non-weezer fans.
hell yeah
Still my fav weezer album, Its full of punk energy and I love the raw production style, I understand why people can dislike it though!
Mason Jar was a painter from the early 1900's
I really think that this album is so interesting, and maybe a difficult way to get into Weezer. Because many of the songs are incredibly personal and raw. And the critical reaction at the time scared Cuomo away from actually being real in his lyrics again. 19:55 Nah, rivers was like 25-26 when this released
Def listen to the blue album the last track is so OOMF you’ll love it
My fave record of theirs. So good
You gotta listen to neutral milk hotel's debut on avery island. It has a rougher sound but the highs are just as high as on aeroplane over the sea
literally adore this album. its so soooososo good
an album that has a similar cover and literally stole a riff from this album is wetdream by willy rodriguez. LISTEN TO IT SMAGS. YOU KNOW U WANNA.
My favorite Weezer album
Bro was filtered by the lyrics. Sometimes the best way to jump into the pool is to dive in.
yo you should react to Destiny XL by the band They are Gutting a Body of Water
Smags you must listen to The War on Drugs Lost in the Dream. Super underrated album from the 2010s
this album is the reason that rivers cuomo is some people’s favorite guitarist. odd choice but i respect it
Yeah, this is why people usually start off with Blue. It's a lot less messy and a lot more catchy
Porno For Pyros - self titled
Nero's Rome - Togetherly
Chokebore - Motionless
praying for "Sailing the Seas of Cheese" by Primus someday
pink triange is like in my bottom 5 songs ever
Beck reaction legend!
Mellow Gold
can you listen to the power of failing by mineral
pinkerton is THE album of all time, but you'll probably like the blue album more, also check out pavement's crooked rain, crooked rain
listened to this when i was in highschool in the 2010s. lots of the songs from this 90s album i just related with. in hindsight, a lot of the lyrics are cringy and lets say problematic, even along with blue, but theres also an honesty and authenticity there that i still resonate with. there are feelings in there i dont think a lot of bands could capture without feeling too aesthetic - el scorcho's im falling for you is a highlight. i also really like the melodies and the production. it just comes across as very genuine to me. across the sea's build up and changes are subtle but peak music for me as well. the rough spots from when i first heard the album are still there, but its still an all-time favorite and classic. love your expressions on some of these songs haha
SUPERDRAG
Yoo please react to Sleater Kinney’s 1997 album Dig Me Out! They’re an all girl punk/indie band and would be a nice juxtaposition against Weezer
Listen to "Just Threw Out the Love of my Dreams" from the deluxe. Also try "Your Arms Are My Cocoon".
I need the fat dog reaction, like my life will be complete
Weezers’ first listening should be:
The Blue Album (1994)
Great vid as always man, my recommendation is "Wild Heart" by Current Joys
love the vids u really should react to man it feels like space again - pond, the guitars are insane
He better think this is the greatest album of all time or else I will be severely disappointed.
You might be severely disappointed
Good album choice once again. Would really love a Donuts - J Dilla reaction some time tho! And you'd like the music. Really important album
Still here, still recommending Kagayaki.
Pinkerton is probably my favorite weezer album, the way they mix the rough production with fantastic hooks and harmonies is super cool, although the lyrics certainly can be off-putting.
