Great review of this album. It's definitely a "mood" album, and at the time made a lot more sense to me than the Blue Album. El Scorcho is the stand-out best, and I've always loved Pink Triangle. After your reviews of Weezer and Radiohead, I think you'd dig what Pavement was getting up to at this same time. It's another band where their first two albums are very distinct, and in Pavement's case they kept evolving with their third album, too. If you enjoy all the strange out-of-tune stylings of Weezer, Pavement has a lot of that plus a bunch of experimentation.
To me, this was Weezer's best record. It was kind of trashed by the critics initially, but years later critics pretty much admitted they didn't get it and the album aged incredibly well. Rivers Cuomo took awhile to get over the reaction. They didn't release another record for 5 years after this
Pinkerton was self produced by the band, and is essentially a live album. All the instruments and vocals were recorded at the same time while the band would perform, so there’s a lot of bleed of different sounds. It’s a very messy sound, but for many like myself it’s exactly what we love about the album.
Butterfly is simply... too emotional to be popular I think. It is emotional in a way that can leave you uncomfortable, and I think the rest of the songs are the same way, but the rest of the songs are ALSO dressed up in pretty clothes like rock music so you can just listen to them to be a slightly emo rock nerd, but Butterfly is just raw... and real.
I’m glad I finally found someone else who feels the way I do about falling for you. That song sucks. The music and the lyrics both, just not a quality song

Very cool info Thankyou for letting me know - the production although quite dark has a quality rock sound imo

Like this guy
He’s hilarious. Big fan
a pink triangle is a symbol recognised by gay ppl and for that song it turns out the girl wasn’t in fact a lesbian
Pink Triangles are what the Nazis forced gay people to wear.
