I had this theory a while back. I thought maybe the first time Glenn saved him was him being revived in the back of the ambulance and Glenn was the emt.
In season 2, he said he was expecting to be the hero by finding and saving Sophia. He cared more about himself being a hero than saving his friend. Also I kind of hated how he looked in season 1 and 2, but that could be fine if he was better overall. Also he is just kind of boring and is mainly useful as a way to show how to raise your kids in a zombie apocalypse. In later seasons, this got better, but he still just seems like a forced character, not an important link to anyone other than Rick. I understand if my reasoning is false or bad, but it's my opinion on why I hate him

It would make sense if he had some kind of immunity that instead of turning him into a walker the virus just woke him up again when he died (maybe he died in the hospital.) It wouldn't make him immortal but he would have to be killed by a head shot like a walker.
