I think you are onto something. I noticed a couple of farmers don't trellis anything. Even in Italy, they do not trellis. They grow their tomatoes on the ground ,and many not in gardens!!! I noticed one Nonna, grew hers in the yard on the grass. 🤔🤔They had enough tomatoes to can for the entire family. Ms Jill- I beginning to think we make things harder, than they need to be!
My spring crop ( and many others in our area) failed, because March winds. They started in Feb and stopped in April. We had 10- to 20 MPH winds every day, and I noticed everything went downhill from there. I'm going to put beans in with my corn, but, everything else, I had already decided not to trellis. Watch the veggie boys- they do not trellis anything. Yes, they are a huge farm. But, they get massive harvests.

Hi KP, we do watch the veggie boys and no they do not trellis anything, the Lord knows best and all that we try to make it easier by trellising things up so we can pick it or see it better it’s probably not the best way to go. We are learning as we go and we wanna share what we learn to help all of our subscribers. The searing heat in Texas does not promote trellising any of your veggies. Caveat is if you have a windbreak and Shay then yes you might have a good shot but otherwise no way Jose. Many blessings we love you Jill

You might be on to something I mistaking planted 2 of my cucumbers where my butternut squash was suppose to be. I did manage to get one cucumber to the spot I wanted it, where I trellis it. The one on the trellis, died after only giving me a handful of pickling cucumbers, the 2 I planted in my garden I ended up murdering after getting, 15 gallons of dill pickles, 4 quarts of spicy dills, 6 pints of relish and fed a bunch to my chickens gave some to neighbors and ate some myself. I pulled them up when they started choking out my tomato plant. I was so done with cucumbers! What a blessing from a simple mistake!

I grow mine on trellis for a couple reasons, lack of space, growing a long variety that needs to hang and the main variety that I grows multiple fruits per node when trellis. I do use the heavy white plastic netting. I also grow only gynecious or parthenocarpic varieties of cucumbers. I have retractable shade cloths too.

This video is what I like about RUclips. It's s nice to know what will or won't work in your area using different methods. Your cucumber growing method totally makes where you’re at. Mine is trellising up on my chain-link fencing and I have wind barriers and partial shading cloth above. It doesn’t reach 100 here so it’s been doing fine. The bright side on your climate, you get much longer growing season and your crops look wonderful😊 Thank you for your info. We are in full sun here in Bedford and we do get periods of heavy sustained winds on occasions, sometimes so bad that is has blown our back common fence down twice, last time on to the chicken coop.
Planting for fall right now. Only thing that survived the summer heat is Malabar spinach and Asian long beans.
Between the drought, the heat, the wind and the rats they have won the first battle but not the war yet.

I think the same applies to tomatoes and whatever else we might now be 'trellising'. Cherry tomatoes seem to be the easiest to grow and the best producer but big tomatoes have a harder time being trellised, I think. I grew a determinant 'Bush' variety two seasons ago and it did very well. Actually, I grew it (and more) in containers, within a 4x4 raised bed that I hadn't finished yet with a variety of other veggies which made a bit of a 'forest' and all but the 'trellised cucumbers' produced extremely well. Farmers, I noticed, don't trellis anything (they don't really have the time) and they have large harvests. By the way, I'm in Texas too.

You are so right! I grew my trellised cucumbers in the greenhouse with misters on the west side. The afternoon sun would burn then up! Got some cucumbers, but nothing like you're getting on the ground. The raised beds dry out on the west side. We have shade cloth over the top - 50% I think. If the leaves were over the soil and/or weed cloth, then it wouldn't dry out as much. Blessings!

It’s hotter in there right now then outside. In the winter when it’s closed up and the suns out during the day it gets quite warm in there. If we don’t supplement the heat at night though it gets close to ambient temperature. If we have lots of plants in there it will be a little bit warmer than outside

I think I’ll try tit this way next year Jill, I have a 40ft in ground bed where I planted pumpkins, watermelon and cantaloupe. The watermelons and cantaloupe did pretty well, but the pumpkins were a big dud. I only got a few pie pumpkins and none of the jack-o-lanterns. All they did was take up space, so next year, I will plant cucumber in that spot and then plant pumpkins in July when cucumber season is over. That will give me another raised bed to plant something else in. Thanks, Jill!

Growing them on the ground might allow higher humidity, a lower VPD possibly. I wonder if they'd grow better on trellis if mist was used to maintain more humidity in hot weather. I think the mold might come from dead plant tissue where a healthy plant that hasn't had much die-off/damaged-tissue will resist mold growth. When the VPD gets too high the plant stops growing/breathing & long periods of no-growth opens habitat/environments for pests & pathogens. Just a thought, I'm no expert.

I lost all my cucumbers last year, even after replanting 4x with weed fabric when I tried direct sowing them. I didn't do transplants. This year I did cucumber transplants and trellises and no weed fabric. One group is planted between peppers. The other group is planted beside a row of peanuts. Both are doing well. I've always just direct sowed cucumbers except for once 2 years ago and those did so well we're still eating canned relishes and slices. BUT, I've done what you did with weed fabric with my watermelons, cantaloupes and all my winter squash and pumpkins and spaghetti squash, putting them in as transplants with weed fabric and got/am still getting outrageous harvests 2 years in a row. I may try again with cucumber transplants and weed fabric and see how that goes for fall if I can find a spot. I want to ferment a bunch of crocks of them as my grandkids will eat a half gallon jar every time they visit. I need to clear out space to plant fall stuff, but my garden is full and still heavily producing and the plants that are normally dying by now look great here in NE AL. Time to expand the garden again, I guess. Lol
