A massive box filled with packing peanuts and voluminous zip-lock bags just arrived at the cave! That can only mean one thing: time for the unveiling of Adam's newest costume acquisition from Prop Store. This costume has it all: armor, a helmet, shield, sword, and spear--and it's all gorgeously made for a big budget film.

Real greek armors
A bit of real history behind each bit of the “Thracian” costume. Top down!
Helmet seems to be a Corinthian-style helmet used in Ancient Greece, but the cheek plates don't extend down far enough to cover his neck as they should. Also the nose cover is too wide, it would restrict his line of sight. This is probably the most iconic design of helmet of the ancient world, and was usually forged of a single lump of bronze.
The cuirass (chest piece) is a hybrid of two different types of armour, those being “musculata” and “linothorax”. Musculata was the muscle-cuirass made usually of bronze from the late archaic period onward. Linothorax was a layered linen or possibly hardened leather armour used in the classical and Hellenistic period by Greek heavy infantry. I’m unaware of any archaeological finds of musculata that have shoulder plates like that, and none of them lace up on the side. The Linothorax does have shoulder plates, but they attach at a single point in the middle, and it does tie up at the sides. Interestingly, musculata armour is in fact sometimes found in Thracian graves.
The bracers (arm piece). Adam called them gauntlets, but gauntlets are for the hands not the arms. Vambraces were a piece of arm armour used during the medieval period, but they were plate metal, and not period accurate to the Thracians. Bracers (like what he has) are a piece of archery equipment to protect the arm from the bowstring.
The greaves (shin armour) are somewhat accurate. Greek hoplite infantry wore greaves, but they were basically long, shaped tubes of solid bronze, not leather with bronze plates (tied?) on them.
The spear is a bit short for a Greek infantry spear, but a bit long for a javelin, though it would still work.
The shield is a bit of a far cry from Thracians. It looks to be an upsized medieval jousting shield given that it has a lance rest, but those tended to be concave. It is approximately the size of a Pavise shield but those didn’t appear until the Late Medieval period. It could be a fantasy version of a Roman scutum except for the lance rest.
The sword is a strange one because it’s a mix of a few different things. It’s a Roman gladius in the blade shape and guard style, but it lacks the pommel that gladii had, and it's fuller (the groove down the middle) is not found on a gladius. The scabbard is possibly the most accurate thing here, but it’s for a Greek xiphos sword, not a gladius. A Xiphos would hang from one string around the shoulder and had a horizontal bar at the end of the scabbard.
Overall, mostly a fantasy costume, but cool nonetheless! Only a few things were actually debatably Thracian and the rest were a mix of different cultures and time periods.
I have a costume made of an actual Thracian warrior and I’ll probably put up a video of it in the next few days if anyone wants to see a slightly less cool looking but more historical Thracian. Cheers!
Solomonisms based comment, let’s get you to the top
Please do so! I would love to see the video.
Wanna see em.
People should read Solomonisms comment to learn how to demonstrate constructive criticism.
You said it well, all-in-all, this has nothing to do with the Thracian heritage, but is a good-sell for epic movies fans 😂 greetings to the seller, he packed Hellenic and Roman toys and sold it as Thracian 😂 he could add a katana and sell it as medieval Samurai kit to at least 10k people 😆
That odd moment around 450 bc, when you're standing on front line wearing plastic armor and a rubber spear.
That odd moment when the joke flew so high above your head it went in orbit.
...with a built in sixpack to impress the women in the enemy's front fighting row...
The sixpack armor is actually historical, it's not to impress women but enemy fighters. Same reason many cultures wore gruesome masks and painted horrible grimasses on their shields.
And it's likely those guys all had a six pack, if not a half rack.
6 pack? Psht. I have a keg.
It's always heartwarming seeing little Adam open his christmas gifts and playing with them. I hope he never grows up ;-)

Beautiful armor set, it looks gorgeous and . . . Wait . . . That helm looks more Corinthian . . . . Yay Hollywood
Nothing about that set is thracian.
It looks Greek
I agree. T hracians had more of a physician helmet instead of a Corinthian design.

"should probably take this watch off it's not period correct" continues to wear blue jeans and glasses
I was looking for this comment.
And plastic armour... :P
Yeah lets ignore the fact none of this is period correct lol
Level9ing yep, especially the armor itself. It’s like a bunch of cuts and pieces of different armors and time periods
A Thracian Warrior with blue jeans. Period correct.
Only if there stone washed
Adam, with you love for FedEx, how does watching Cast Away make you feel?
One day build idea - home-made mannequin for costumes/armour.
plz plz plz
And make it posable and able to hold weapons.
also make it fly and have free wifi
caio santos lmao
2000jago you can buy just about anything on eBay... so you are calling everything he does a waste of time?
It's actually pretty easy to make. One of my friends that finished design school had to have a full size puppetry puppet, from there, making an actual costume mannequin is just a matter of know how to stitch and glue the foam and that aerated material they use for pins and needles (kinda like old school summer veranda chairs material that doesn't give much about weather).
He used a female stiff mannequin he bought used from a store (the old ones that have solid structure), from there he cut all the major joints and bought wooden balls that fit the various joints (eBay mostly, but a wood shop can churn them out with ease for ya). And following the classing doll jointed system he cut the balls to put structure inside and copper washers for ease of movement (remember, it's a puppet).
Seriously, not counting the delivery time, and the slightly complicated part of getting the right washers, he finished work in one week. Frankly, the most complicated part was to figure out the wiring inside and the wiring outside for the show, but for a standing mannequin, that's easy, you just need to squeeze the joints just right so they move only when positioned.
When attacked by a Tracian, the drill is to grasp the spear with one hand and unwind the tape with the other. Gets 'em every time :)
I don't know if Adam is buying all these costumes (which I could totally see Adam doing), or Prop Store of London is just sending you old costumes they couldn't sell to promote the company; but if the latter then tell them to send some female costumes for Simone to join in the fun with you.
Vegaspsycho Prop store don't usually have stock that doesn't end up selling.
They don't make this kind of armor for women because... women didn't fight like this. They fought in the kitchen.
Female and Male amor where the same dude like for real no reason to change the amor to accommodate the breast because you had to be of a certain body type to be a warrior so you would not have much weight on you
Edit: meaning you would have tiny breast meaning they would not get in the way
Adam in the beginning he is basically going "getting packages is my fetish" love you man! :P
0:40 , package says FRAGILE all over, Adam procceeds to throw it to the ground
Greeks used a kopis or xiphos not gladius
Who talked bout greeks?
The Thracian people bordered with the northern Greeks so it is likely that any of the weapons they didn't forge themselves were imported from the Greek city's, that or they would have copied the designs of the Greeks.

You should do a Guardians of the Galaxy Ravager jacket as a one day build
OH come on who doesn't like boxes? I'd like to see Adam at Christmas, I can only imagine how excited he is. Now that would be a spectacle to behold.
Adam :*sees fragile on the box*
Adam :*casually drops it*
Man that armor looks so great, I am loving the red leather (red is my favorite color) and all the wonderful detailing. Yet another thing I've seen on this channel that I'm immensely jealous of. Adam Savage is basically living all the dreams of all the nerds, at the same time. He has a truly beautiful passion about all his nerdy stuff too, and I just wish he would adopt me and let me play with his cool toys.
Its not a Gladius, its xiphos
Yes and no, for the period of time we could say that it is a xiphos, but, the design and the profile is reminicient of a gladius hispaniensis. It is probably due to design decisions in the film that this don't match within the historical period
Dahkriin_ i haven't seen the movie but would bit be a gladius because Hercules is Roman?
Hercules is Greek
Dahkriin_ Heracles is the Greek version. Hercules is roman

MORE SIMONE PLEEEEAAASE... love seeing her she’s not only cute but super entertaining to watch.
I love how adam is like a kid in a candy store when it comes to packages he gets.
Adam really is like a kid on Christmas and it is so great to watch. It just warms my heart.
I thought I was the only one addicted to getting packages. I don't even care what they are I just love getting them. For my birthday my wife will give me a tracking number just so I can track it and get it in the mail. That's how much I like getting packages.
That is because the human brain is wired to release an endorphin when discovering new things. Opening a box is the most simple trigger.
When Adam mentioned that he's like that too I couldn't help but chuckle, cus I know the feeling all too well. I'm glad I'm not the only one like that.
You thought you were "the only one"? Who could think that's a pleasure unique to themselves?EVERYONE loves getting packages, except maybe the guys who have to sort them at UPS and FedEx.
wiil you still love packages when someone mails you a bomb?
I absolutely LOVE getting packages from Fed Ex, UPS and the USPS too!! I'm the shipper receiver where I work so whenever I send away for something, I have it shipped to my work. It always MAKES MY DAY when I get something FOR ME! and not just more tons of crap for the shop. Anyone remember George Carlin's funny skit, about "SENDING AWAY"?? And how much fun it is for little boys to "SEND AWAY"? I guess some of us will always stay little boys!
When he called out Simone I freaked out!!!!
zachary ballard ikr! Where has she been?!
Like wtf.
Adam is such an unapologetic nerd. I love the fact there is not any evidence of an ego, he just seems to have a real passion and wants everyone to know it.
Its funny, i work at a FedEx warehouse here in southern California, stacking shipping containers full of freight for the airplane. Well 90% of the boxes i get are for the bay area so its really likely that I've actually handled a lot of adams packages. That kinda made my day lol.
When you forget what you ordered, it's like Christmas everytime a package arrives. What a great feeling!
We need to see Adam going around his office scaring people and annoying people in his costumes
Bit of helpful advice, Adam: when armoring up, always start at the feet and work your way up. It's hard to bend with a cuirass or chest plate. If you've already got the feet, shins, knees, thighs, and waist done, then you don't have to worry about bending over anymore, and since armor is often layered, this will help ensure that the upper body armor will be seated properly.
Are we ignoring that he said "IVRKSHP", when it's actually "WRKSHP"?
Workshop
When Adam opened the box I expected him to say, "There could be anything in there!" And then pull out a leg lamp.
Which, by the way, would make an AWESOME one day build! #justsaying
Adam: Better take off this watch, because it isn't period accurate
Also Adam: Blue Jeans are fine
The sword is called a xiphos. The gladius would not be introduced until the Romans adopted it.
Adam, since you get so many packages each day. How are you handling all the cardboard and other packing material that you get left. How do you get rid of them?
Oskar Kuus It's Adam. He probably uses them in props.
Recycling services pay good money for paper, corrugated ("cardboard") or otherwise. I would be surprised if he didn't have a small dumpster just for cardboard, or maybe even his own baler.
Costs a lot less to turn old paper into new paper than to grow a tree and start from scratch
It's just nice to see a person happily talking about their hobbies regardless of age
Next one day build idea: A machine to suck up and contain packing peanuts and releases the final parts list for the rest of us!
SoundSamurai a vacuum cleaner?
make a costume playlist and I'll binge watch all day
What is actually the name of the store?
who says you need to grow up, all you need is enough money and you can be a kid forever, how awesome is that.
_hearing the Age Of Empires theme in my head_
I love getting packages as well.
Adam! No! They're not gauntlets! Gauntlets include the fingers. They're not vambraces! Vambraces cover the elbow. What you have there are bracers. Just plain bracers. The shin pieces are supposed to be greaves, but they're a little short as they don't cover the knee. Sorry, I just had to point those out.
Caleb Williams they are vambracers, vambracers are the equivalent of greaves. One for the lower leg, one for the lower arm.
Amazing costume adam! And thanks for letting us know where you got it so we can get cool stuff too!
green is cabbage adam is savage
savage is adam, cabbage is green
I was watching this video drooling over that shield and it made me remember that buried behind the furnace is a riot shield I made out of wood years ago in my highschool shop class, completely forgot it existed. My sudden desire for a big shield has been created and satisfied, thank you Adam.
and yes I walked through my highschool with a homemade riot shield, got a lot of strange looks lol
EEEEHm nothing of this is thracian, lol
It's from the movie Hercules which is not a historically accurate movie, and it doesn't try to be. That's probably why it's not Thracian by historical accuracy
Didn’t know Simone worked for you. Some seriously great talent!
"Everyone who knows me knows I'm a dick... -ted to getting packages."
Wow. I really believed you were a kid on Christmas!!
Best present ever!!
Hey Adam, do you have a CNC machine? I saw someone machining delrin with one and thought of the possibilities.
Adam needs to build a mannequin army wearing every costume and prop he owns. So you'd have Thracians, next to terminators, all being led by Adam with Excalibur in a chewbaca costume
Way cool armor, I suggest a youtuber scholagladiatoria a fountain of information on armor and weapons.someone Adam you would enjoy visiting with.
Imagine a video with Matt, Lindy, Metatron and Adam.
+Snooderblade Metatron is kind of immature, both in personality and content. Skall would be a better choice imo, though I think Lindy and Matt would be more than enough by themselves.
Well i like Metatron but different opinions. I also suggested Metatron over Skall because he is more of a armour guy than Skallagrim.
Skall is great with modern reproductions, the metatron is more of a armor channel with knowledge about Japanese and roman armor and Matt from scola gladiatoria is great with antique swords and HEMA. All three have their own subject of which the know a lot. In this case, just for the armor, the metatron would be my best guess for info on this style of armor en the accuracy of it. But then again it's movie armor not a reproduction of a historical piece. As much as I flinch when I see a swordfight in a movie, I've been a HEMA practitioner for about 10 years now, a movie is about story telling and not a history lesson
Oswald Sweezlebogger wait metatron more immature than Skal? Are we even talking about the same channels here? :p
I'm in love with these videos. Also, glad to see Simone randomly!
Hey Adam. are you planning on making anything from GoT?
I don't think he watches GoT.
Lumor who doesn't watch GoT?

Always good to see Simone
"Period correct"? None of that stuff is Thracian correct armor.
The way Adam keeps saying "Beauty!" in these videos makes me believe he's been watching a lot of EEVblog.
How much?
This armour is pure fantasy lol
You could use the boxes to make a box fort
>removes watch because not period correct
>still wears glasses and a blue jeans and shirt.
This is why I like you here in tested Adam!
Reminds me of the bit from A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum describing Miles Gloriosus.
"That's the brute who raped my country, Thrace!" "He raped Thrace?" "And then he came and did it again! And then again!"
"He raped Thrace thrice?" Worthy of Benny Hill.
Thracians🇧🇬
“Hey, Simone!”
An already awesome video just got 10x better
The akward silence
It's highly period accurate too. We have excellent historical records to show that indeed this kind of armour was extensively worn by extras in c. 2014 A.D. B-grade Brett Ratner films.
That is not what Thracian armour looks like, they wore practically the same armour as what the Greeks wore.
Box says fragile on it yet at the beginning he flips it around and dumps it on the floor lmao. This man is my hero. Like, swear on everything. My dude. He's just the shit
And can you make Poo from the kung fu Panda franchise in your next costume build?
Sam 1057 ooo Po, yes!
I truly appreciate these videos, keep 'em coming. I can't help but feeling it's a little bit rushed every time there is one of these prop videos. I would love it if you took a couple of minutes extra to give us a better view of the props and give the video a less rushed feeling. Thanks for your quality content!
Big man-child
Adam's excitement is intoxicating...
Lmao. He keeps the movie a secret to the end, and I'm expecting some amazing movie, and it's Hercules with the Rock.. If I was buying props I'd want them from a movie or show I cared about not trash.
ac3ofspades878 I think Adam's more into collecting props for the good craftsmanship. He doesn't care too much about the movie as long as the props themselves are well made.
I totally agree with you though, lol.
ac3ofspades878 if the props are good the props are good
ac3ofspades878 you didn't watch the whole video clearly, he says what movie it's from very clearly at the end
The whole point is that even poo movies can have amazing prop departments and even though Adam loves movies, he admires the craftsmanship from all of the people who have to work hard behind the scenes even more. The fact that the movie tanked means that the amazing work of the prop department can be owned on the cheap. The armor is beautifully made, no matter how the movie did in the end.
and you didn't read the comment he clearly knows acknowledges that in the begging of his comment...
0:41 That moment when Adam purposefully drops his own box labelled "fragile" like a ton of bricks.
Hi Adam. I know you probably won't see this but if you do:
I'm just curious as to weather or not this is your only job now (RUclips), or if you do anything else like production, prop creation, etc etc still. Thanks!
I knew you from Mythbusters, Adam...you're the man! And same with me...I like getting packages, and I get one like every other week, it seems. Lol!
Getting packages is always fun, its like Christmas every day since (at least for some of the things i order from amazon) it doesn't say whats in the box.
Holy crap, whether the movie is great or not, this armor actually looks awesomely authentic
Adam Savage:Uber Nerd! You have the coolest toys.
"...it looks great. It's super light weight" **hits self with sword** "yep"
8:43 the way man said Hercules 😂😂
The majority of the first 4 minutes
Adam: oh oh oh oh oh oh oh!
Would be fun if Adam bought a costume which was made as it was intended. I bet it would be awesome to own like an actual full suit of armor. :D
I'm happy i got to meet adam a while back at fox theater in detroit
I watched that movie the other day, and I was thinking about making a set of the armor.
I like that Simone just popped in.
Just watching this made me so happy !!
That really IS a pretty cool costume, but I'm surprised that Adam didn't just make one himself. I'm sure a lot of us would've LOVED to see the build and probably be inspired to make one also! I know I'm already thinking about it. I'm sure Adam could make that armor and weaponry just as good, if not better!
How great must it be to have a boss that calls you over to help him with his armor, so cool.
I got real excited thinking it was actual Thracian and not Hercules Thracian. Still cool as hell, I love the design and where the costume designers got their ideas.
Getting 5 packages a day, that's the dream man. You're living my dream.
I have the production mold for the round lion head shield boss that wasn't used during production but it still produces awesome cast. I did a couple in cold cast bronze and have them hanging in our kitchen and gym.
watching him open the box reminds me so much of the lamp scene from A Christmas Story.
I love that thing where adam savage is needlessly rough with the props. Don't know what it does for him, but he seems to enjoy it
They cut the part of the movie out when Spartacus calls his shield "Gorgeous and Fabulous"
And the Crixus goes "Snap! you go boyfriend and with those sandals, you are killin' it."
I love how to box says fragile and Adam just throws it on the ground 😂
