gilzineto more than century after the reign of Emperor Commodus, so he technically wasnt Caeser edit: yeah I see my mistake now, I didnt realize AD was after death therefore the title was being used century before Commodus
It's definitely not historically accurate, but while I never noticed the details in the movie, seeing it up close I realize all the love that went into it. The costume designer puts a huge backstory into the piece as though Maximus had designed it himself. I notice he has his wife and child on it, as well as the two horses that he tells the child about in the scene outside the arena. He has a sheaf of wheat representing his farm and the goddess of victory, Nike present as well. I'm not sure about the significance of the two figures below that, but the story that this armor tells is just awesome to me. I can't believe I never noticed it before.
Love Todd's Costumes. I have a bunch of their Indy gear. When I saw this, I wondered if that was the Todd's gladiator suit. I've always wanted that. Glad to see it looks great in person.
Awesome! Gladiator is one of my top ten movies of all time. Such an inspirational movie, and the soundtrack is truly legendary. Did anyone else, like me, cry when he died?
I just watched it last night probably for about the 100th time in my life and I still cried when he died. The first time i saw it in the theater I had to hide my face so no one could see me balling my eyes out. This is my favorite movie of all time. I can’t believe I was 26 when it came out. Makes me feel old.
Ahh the happiness I feel inside, when I go to RUclips, check out the latest videos from Tested, and there is a video called, "Adam Savage's Gladiator Armour". Awesome and thanks you guys :)
The coolest thing is that he likes (making) replica's as much as originals and spends a lot of his time giving back to the community. In other videos he explains that he loves it when someone calls to inquire for information about the original props he has. It should be illegal to keep a lot of cool things to yourself, but Adams just being an awesome guy
Gladiator is such a good movie... it's actually the first and almost only movie that I had goosebumps of excitement in some particular scenes. This moment for example: 'why doesn't a hero reveal himself and let us all know your real name'... OMG that was such a good scene.
My inlaws bought a ton of STARZ Spartacus prop weapons and turned their guest room into a museum. If Adam's ever on the east coast, near north NJ, and wants a tour I'm sure they'd love to have him. They also have a huge collection of antique toys and board games and tons of nerdy things. Consider yourself and the Tested crew invited :)
Parially correct. Caesar was the first to go by the title imperator, then Octavian followed as imperator caear Augustus. The later leaders went by the complete title of imperator caesar ... augustus, until the augustus was droped about 629 a.d. So the title augustus disappeared while the titel caesar transformed to Kaiser which is aequivalent with emperator. So caesar isn't just like augustus but became a title independent of the Roman empire just as imperator did. I.e. Karl der Große was a Kaiser/caesar not an augustus nor did he go by the title of imperator. Also about 200 a.d. only the actual emperor went by the name imperator caesar ... augustus while his sons were just imperator caesar ... . According to this a prince of this time would be an imperator caesar. So at the beginning of the film it would be imperator caesar Commodus, when Aurelius dies he becomes then imperator caesar Commodus augustus.
Diogenes2077 And just partially correct as well. Caesar was not the first to be called imperator. Think of Sulla who got elected as "imperator iterum". That's how it started with Caesar as well, and then he later got elected "imperator perpetuus". The former was actually part of republican law.
Ok with Sulla you got me on a blind spot. Afaik Caesar became "dictator perpetuus". Dictator was a legimit political Roman title but ment to be temporary. I think this was also the title of Sulla. The Imperator title was a military title you were supposed to give up when coming back to Rome. But as Caesar took his troops to Rome he kept being 'imperator'. Stil I was wrong about Commodus as he was an exception and already called imperator caesar Commodus augustus when his father was stil alive.
You need to make an hour long video and show us just about every little toy, prop or nick nak you have. How ever long it is wed all watch it. You guys are awesome
If you didn't jump in front of the camera and yell "SPOILERS" after everything, I probably wouldn't retain that information long enough for it to effect my experience of a movie. I would just forget it as an unimportant detail.
Hey Adam, just to let you know, it would have been another gladiator who helped Maxamus with his armour. And yes I do use the British spelling for armor. It was only the officers, who had assistance with their armour. I am also a member of the Society for Creative Anachronisms, or SCA. Whenever I fought, I did everything by myself. Most Ligionaires, Knights and any other armoured soldiers were able to get their armour on by themselves. Though it DID MAKE it EXCEEDINGLY MUCH EASIER TO DO SO. I made my own, it was called by two names, either a coat of plates, or a brig or brigantine, with a studded leather skirt, and fully articulated metal legs.
A note about the white armour set that Joaqin Phoenix wore ... I always felt like it made him look like he is being "swallowed by marble". It sort of foreshadows his death and passage into the impersonal representation of an emperor statue. Like he is being prepped for sacrifice and becoming inhuman - all stone, reaching his outward ambitions but failing as a human being, a friend, brother and son at the same time. Passing into the legends of power due to his position but really being too small for the part as a real life person as opposed to the national symbol he wants to be for his own petty reasons. Only his head is not covered. And it made me remember this scene at 0:06 ruclips.net/video/C5j1wduFWl0/видео.html Here we see the scowling marble head in the b.g. juxtaposed to Joaqins as he speaks of his shortcomings an strengths and works himself up to the sin of killing his father. It's about him not having the fibre to naturally be what he desires to be so he has to steal it and rationalize his own virtues. He is haunted by his own ambition - while the legacy of his greater predecessors, cast in marble seems to be weighing on him, judging him. Already falling short. He is also wearing a piece of white cloth around his neck in both scenes, almost like a bandage, suggesting the upcoming wound to the throat. A cut throat is the death of a liar. A destruction of the instrument of a betrayer and manipulator that separates his scheming head from his body. A separation also suggested by the imagery in both scenes. Joaqins body - his heart and emotions have turned to stone - only the lying head remains as he finally goes for victory. His transformation is almost complete, but it is a withering, a dying or eradication of the body that has taken place, becoming like the impersonal statues of his forebears with their cold, judgmental marble faces, that he has searched for some sense of meaning or connection that he himself is incapable of, and projected his desires and fears upon. Quintus betrays Marcus too - and he is wearing a piece of cloth around his neck in both scenes, as a signifier of promotion through betrayal. But he is a man split between what is signified by the - ironically white - cloth and dark armour, more like Marcus' and he ultimately denies Joaqin his sword, redeeming himself somewhat and displaying the boundaries of dignity that Commodus has long transgressed. He is a man of the people, a face in the crowd who rose to higher ranks through betrayal. But Commodus betrays from a position of wealth, power and privilege - and consequently choice. And there is resentment in Quintus face for that - showing Commodus failure to be loved or even respected by those he rule. Quintus is a soldier - he may have acted as the opportunist at his betrayal - but he is doing so from a position of being more or less caught in or subjected to the system that he is in. He is a spoke on a wheel - and once approached by Commodus - there really could have been no way back for him except, perhaps to turn to Marcus. But Marcus himself was failing at that point sticking to his ideals without understanding the real world consequences of politics rather than battle and trying to avoid picking up the challenge placed before him to become the statesman as well as the warrior and bring about the republic . Maybe quintus understands this. He remains the man in the crowd with no real say. He may be Judas but he is not the devil. And as Marcus redeems himself - Quintus gets to do the same and redo his choice, denying Commodus his sword - probably always understanding who he truly was. Quintus earns that opportunity through the effort and sacrifice of Marcus, as does ultimately the Roman people.
if i remember correctly he wore that armor from the moment they reached the Colosseum. I think the man that was the one owning the slaves that were gladiators gave it to him when it was decided they were going to Rome
I really hope they feature the stormtrooper armor. I've been trying to get a set for a while now, but i can't figure out where the best armor is sold. I've only found two sites that sell it, and it's quite expensive, and so i hope Adam shows us the best way to get a set.
Ahh... Silver and Lightning! Heck, i love this movie. "My Name is Maximus Decimus Meridius..." You'll know the rest, but this speech still gives me Goosebumps as do some moments in the movie.

I just happened to catch him at the right time before a show I had to drive 400 miles for when he had his bass for sound check. What shoes is Adam wearing? They look like boba fetts shoes from rotj but black instead of grey, if anyone knows please answer, I'd love to get a pair of those.
THEJEYE YT Chainmail was invented by the celts/barbarians, which proved better than a linothorax and cheaper than a musculata armor. End of the Roman Republic more or so, there was a new Gladius invented, the Mainz gladius, which could pierce threw chanimail if you were a professional, so they invented the Lorica segmentata which was better at taking blows. Once the Lorica segmentata became expensive, harder, and resources to find the material to make it, the romans just dropped it and stuck to Chainmail. Note: The romans didnt have a standard uniform, so each soldier bought their own equipment. Historically you would see a mix mash between chainmail and seg armor with some scailmale sometimes in a roman unit, the only thing that the Romans kept the same was their shield symbols to show what Legio they belonged to.
Because accurate props can get a hell of a lot more expensive, so this one is reasonably priced looking at accuracy and quality. But for most people it is indeed still ridiculously priced.
Adam is so awesome...He better have kids...That would be a real shame if there wasn't a little boy or girl to enjoy the wonderful spirit of a father like that.
Adam, you seem to be a great guy. I don't think you'll read this but if you do - how much money have you spent on your hobbies? Costumes, material to build stuff, machinery etc.
13 hundred bucks inexpensive? Holy crap, Adam. By the way, I wonder where did his hero stormtrooper armor came from, and if he has a stunt/sandtrooper aswell.
1300 bucks for a museum/film production quality piece that is made completely buy hand is very inexpensive, especially considering that your getting the tunic, the main body armour, the shin pads, the boots the arm guards/vambraces, and the helmet. It's a pretty good deal if you ask me.
Jamie love your friends work but myself being a serious fabricator 'Cheeky Industries' though what our main interests lie in fabricating technologies such as robot parts and the like we make one of's including replacement parts for weapons and armour. And... I'm sorry to break the news to you but that there is no such thing as leather armour ; ) Actually the type of armour that you're talking about, its common name half plate armour. What is plate steel with leather drawn over it is a decorative piece which include suds to hold it the plate and the leather in place. Unlike the movies in real life offices only used to adorn their armour with figures usually symbols of their province and prominence. Its redeeming features of the movie armour is that it adorns itself with horses and the Sphinx which makes maximus a Mesopotamian Spaniard which is true to the story and it really does look good on screen.
So - here is yet another one of your comments that is totally devoid of evidence. So far, I have found that only one of your comments supplies references; and both those references were duds (that's an old trick used by Sociology students).
You missed the point they both suggest that leather armour never existed. There is a reason why Wikipedia does not have a section on leather armour because it is common belief by historians that leather armour never existed. They suggest that there was plated and studied armour that gave rise to the myth of leather armour as leather armour is not mentioned in any literature available today. You may find this one more revealing. livinghistory.ie/~valen/history/blair.pdf
Cheeky Bastard My schedule is busy; my time is limited; but my persistence is unlimited. All will be done, in the fullness of time. Part of your spiritual sickness is a lack of faith in humanity. You look down your cheeky nose at the rest of us and see nothing but the mud on the ground. You need, though, to level your gaze and temper your hubris. Have faith!

Gladiator was the first R-rated film I ever saw in the theater. That movie kicked so much ass
Wearing armor to a con is a KNIGHTmare
Adam Savage is such a huge nerd... and we adore him because of that!

Just to be a bit of an armour nerd, that "skirt" is not a skirt. They're called pteryges.
Pretty sure it's a skirt tho
Ahh the happiness I feel inside, when I go to RUclips, check out the latest videos from Tested, and there is a video called, "Adam Savage's Gladiator Armour". Awesome and thanks you guys :)
There should be a law prohibiting one man from owning so much cool stuff. Save some for the rest of us!
He's like a kid but with a crap load of money....
juans daone Nearly everyone with a crapload of money tends to act a bit like a kid. If you're lucky, they won't be a brat.

The score of Gladiator, to this day, blows me away. Han Zimmer knocked that one out of the park.
I love Adam and Norm geeking out together. :D
I love that Adam has a "favorite Indiana Jones" jacket. This armor looks amazing!
I especially love the Nebuchadnezzar plate in the back.
"what you do in the past, echoes in eternity''. love that guy.
Dayum. That is wicked. I would love a set of that armor.
No king, no prince … the emperor! Big difference!
+diotough Actually it would have to be 'imperator' or 'caesar' but that's to European for Hollywood.
"Caesar" is actually just one of many titles the emperor/imperator had … just like "Augustus"

That is a savage set of armor

Guess it had to happen sooner or later Adam in a leather mini-skirt! Really a good outfit Adam it is well done and a nice addition to your collection.
Hey Adam, just to let you know, it would have been another gladiator who helped Maxamus with his armour. And yes I do use the British spelling for armor. I was so sure he was going for the giant spoon instead of the wooden sword!
I have been to El Djem, one of the ampitheatres used to film Gladiator! It was great.
Beautiful armor! Amazing work

One of my Favorite movies of all Time, still pondering the question what's a good technique for weathering leather?
This is a question for Norm I was wondering what your watch was and where you might have gotten the strap
Awesome film prop show and tell from Adam. As always!
Screw the Gladiator armor, I WANT THAT NEBUCHADNEZZAR SIGN FROM THE MATRIX
Where did he get that thing!? Is it the original prop? o_o;
He did work on the Matrix sequels... wouldnt be a stretch to think it is from an original mold.
I know he did, thats why I'm dying to know.
ZELX Studios I think Adam might have designed some of the ships in the Matrix films. I think he talked about it in one of the still untitled podcast.
Same here, the ID Plate was the first thing catching my eye! I hope to find some specs...
By the way, I didn't mean what I said about the armor. :P
I just meant, the plate was more interesting to me ;)
Lol, I was named after that movie. To bad I don't have a set of that armer.
I really hope they feature the stormtrooper armor. I've been trying to get a set for a while now, but i can't figure out where the best armor is sold. I've only found two sites that sell it, and it's quite expensive, and so i hope Adam shows us the best way to get a set.
Omg I want this so badly. Do they still make it?
Ahh... Silver and Lightning! Heck, i love this movie.
"My Name is Maximus Decimus Meridius..." You'll know the rest, but this speech still gives me Goosebumps as do some moments in the movie.
The King? The Prince? Really dude. He's the Emperor of the Roman Empire! Shame on you!

Is it sad that one of my major things on my bucket list is to meet and speak with Adam Savage for about 5 minutes?
Man, it blows living in Oklahoma. I met the #1 on the list and actually got to do the #1 on my "fantasy" list. Which was meet Zach Smith from the band Pinback and the #1 on the fantasy list was to play his bass. I just happened to catch him at the right time before a show I had to drive 400 miles for when he had his bass for sound check. His Bass is an Alembic - Stanley Clarke I don't think it is the deluxe but it is still an over $9000 bass. (oh the joke there)
ITS TOOK ALL OF 4:17 FOR ME TO DECIDE TO WATCH GLADIATOR WAS ABLE OT FIGHT THE URGE BUT DEM QUOTES GOT ME.
And dont call that Prætorian helmet, is a fantasy combination of an imperial gallic helmet and a helenistic attic helmet.
Thanks for sharing (AGAIN) Adam - love this.
Plz tell me how to get that gladius!
What shoes is Adam wearing? They look like boba fetts shoes from rotj but black instead of grey, if anyone knows please answer, I'd love to get a pair of those.
Tested I really dig the Nebuchadnezzar plaque from the matrix that's mounted on the door. Where did Adam get that?
just the tip when wearing braces lace them the opposite way the way that you have done them makes them easier to tie and what you had at the end
someone plz reply i want to know why did some roman soldiers wear chainmail some wore segmentata and some wore plain leater tunics????
Price
THEJEYE YT Chainmail was invented by the celts/barbarians, which proved better than a linothorax and cheaper than a musculata armor. how can you say that the price is reasonable. have you seen the cost on todd's site ?
Because accurate props can get a hell of a lot more expensive, so this one is reasonably priced looking at accuracy and quality. But for most people it is indeed still ridiculously priced.
He wears armor to a con. It's a ....*sunglasses*....KNIGHT mare.....YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Adam is so awesome...He better have kids...That would be a real shame if there wasn't a little boy or girl to enjoy the wonderful spirit of a father like that.
Dear Adam.
What are your thoughts on "Frankenstein's" outfit in the movie Death Race starring Jason Statham? More specifically - the mask.
That is kickass Adam. I have been wanting stuff like this since the movie came out 18 years ago. Now to get some cash for this. WOW. Awesome job.
Where can I buy something like this?
+JacksMagicBean Read the description
how about joaquine's emperor white armor? it would greatly pair with your gladiator armor! ^_^
Isnt a sword out of that time period made of bronze or iron?
Man, saying "Spoiler Alert" AFTER you spoil something doesn't help much :D

Adam, you seem to be a great guy. I don't think you'll read this but if you do - how much money have you spent on your hobbies? Costumes, material to build stuff, machinery etc.
You know what? I'm not even surprised. xD
Awesome looking armor man.
nice workmanship

actually the order is.. " and i will have my vengeance... in this life or the next" but whatever. not like it matters. no nerd can resist adam savage.
Holy shit that fight was intense.
13 hundred bucks inexpensive? Holy crap, Adam.
By the way, I wonder where did his hero stormtrooper armor came from, and if he has a stunt/sandtrooper aswell.
I believe he build the stormtrooper armor himself.
And...
I'm sorry to break the news to you but that there is no such thing as leather armour
; )
Actually the type of armour that you're talking about, its common name half plate armour.

Haven't done that before why should I believe you? You are a liar and a charlatan.
Cheeky Bastard
My schedule is busy; my time is limited; but my persistence is unlimited. All will be done, in the fullness of time. Part of your spiritual sickness is a lack of faith in humanity.
You look down your cheeky nose at the rest of us and see nothing but the mud on the ground. You need, though, to level your gaze and temper your hubris.
Have faith!
