      When I was trained as a military radio operator we called those electornic connectors "Bendix" connectors - Bendix being a manufacturer.
      I always think of (and hear) the Special AKA "What I like most about you, is your girlfriend" music video when I see silver space suits.

    So regarding the chemical rocket comment at the end - the rockets used in the Mercury missions didn't use Hydrogen/Oxygen - the Redstone rockets used LOX + Ethyl Alcohol and the Atlas used LOX + RP-1 (Kerosene)

    Adam is a person that naturally loves to talk and express himself. The guy that does the interview always speeks on top of adam and change the subject and/or does a stupid comment to look smart. I dont remember your name but if you are the guy that did the interview and you read this, let me tell you this mate: I do not care about you. Im watching this video because i want to watch Adam Savage. Adam could EASILY talk for 15 minutes about this suit without you. All i expect you to do, is point out things that Adam might be forgetting or things that he would think are not important and ask a question about it. If you know the answer, well good for YOU mate. I dont care about your knowledge of different things, all i want to ear about is Adam and his stuff. Let Adam talk ! If he talks about something and you know what hes going to say well dont say it for him. I dont want to watch a video about a random ''smartass'' showing a spacesuit, i want to watch Adam showing HIS spacesuit. Now im sorry if i offended you or anybody, but i think you should only ask questions in this interview and dont say anything else. In my opinion, you dont even need to be filmed in this video, you could stand by the cameraman and let Adam show off his item and occasionally ask a question to point out something that Adam might have missed. Thanks.

    Adam, this is an old video, but as an Army aviation maintainer, I can probably guarantee that exact same connector is still in service on one of our aircraft. It's mind blowing how little some parts have changed!

    • @richsmith6453
      @richsmith6453 8 лет назад +3

      The same connectors are still used in the Royal Navy, there's no point changing something that works!

    • @zackbledsoe8767
      @zackbledsoe8767 8 лет назад +1

      It's actually still a standard connector in the stage entertainment industry, I know it a simply a 'motor control' connector, for the chain motors that fly trusses and such. When I took a trip and swung by Edwards, I spotted the same on the B-52 used for the X-15! Marked as a data connector if memory serves.

    I was astounded to hear Adam mention the flashlight at the end of the glove. My father was the Master Controller for the Mercury spaceflight program and was the engineer tasked with developing the glove finger light! If Adam would be interested in hearing the real story behind it, contact me and I'll put you in touch.

    In regards to the Omega Speedmaster Adam is wearing.
    Walter Schirra on Mercury-Atlas 8 was the first to take his own personal Omega Speedmaster into space. However I’m unable to find any evidence it was strapped externally onto the suit.
    The Speedmaster was only officially qualified for use in space in 1965 so I’ve only seen it used externally on Gemini missions with V207 watchbands.
    John Glenn however did have a Heuer stopwatch, Reference 2915-A strapped externally to his suit for Mercury-Atlas 6.

      Noe Anguiano He is just super condescending, and treats Adam's passion as some weird out of season, crazy shit. Cannot really pinpoint a specific moment, but you can just feel the whole "superior that you" vibe. You know, little things like this: 15:27. I can be making a huge mistake about his personality, but he has all those annoying traits. Do not really like these types of people.

      I get none of those vibes from him.
      Johnny Bravo And I wouldn't even say this is true... people in casual social situations, especially where they're impassioned, tend to talk quickly, and often even over each other a bit.
      I've seen this opinion a lot, and it just seems nonsensical to me. This is how people talk to each other. This is how everyone I have ever met talks to each other outside of formal situations.

    • @AudieHolland
      @AudieHolland 10 лет назад

      Also, being a geek, he wants to let the audience know some of his space lore. Which may be a bit condescending in hindsight.

  • @dudewhosaysarrh
    @dudewhosaysarrh 11 лет назад +3

    The original Omega Speedmaster was specifically designed for use inside a space capsule. It featured a clear plastic dome rather than a glass cover because there was some concern that if the glass shattered the floating debris might get caught in the ventilation system end end up being inhaled, causing damage to the astronauts lungs. When the apollo program was lanched the Speedmaster was the only watch that was approved by NASA due to this safety feature.

    • @kuglepen64
      @kuglepen64 11 лет назад +5

      That is entirely incorrect. The Speedmaster was an off the shelve item from a Dallas jeweller. It and several other watches were bought from there to be tested for use in the space missions. The Speedmaster with its Lemania 2310 movement was the most durable of the lot, so it was chosen. The Speedmaster had always featured a Hexalite (polycarbonate) glass, and would continue so for decades. The only modification to the watch was the removal of the link brace, replacing it with a long nylon strap with Velcro patches to enable it to wrap around the very thick space suits.

      seigeengine He's just too overenthusiast. He should wait a full second before saying something after Adam has said something. Because sometimes, Adam may add something to his first few lines. An interviewer's job is mainly to listen and in a showcase like this, help the interviewee say everything he wanted to say. This man is not a good interviewer. He wants to reply the moment Adam ends his line. This means that he didn't listen to Adam, he was just waiting for him to fall silent so he could quickly spout out something.

    Ahem, the Bulova Accutron Astronaut:
    "The Accutron Astronaut was the first American watch in space, and was worn by a number of NASA astronauts. Mercury pilot L. Gordon 'Gordo' Cooper Jr. flight-tested both the Accutron Astronaut and the Omega Speedmaster during his 22-orbit Mercury-Atlas 9 Faith 7 mission; Cooper noted that the Speedmaster had lost time due to the severe G-forces experienced during liftoff, while the Accutron remained unaffected. It is a popular myth among Omega enthusiasts that Cooper used his Speedmaster to time the retro burn during atmospheric re-entry. However, according to his autobiography Leap of Faith, Cooper used his Astronaut to time the retro burn, resulting in the most accurate splashdown achieved during the Mercury program."

    Adam et al:
    The plug on the suit leg is a mil-spec multi-pin connector, it looks like the type commonly used in aircraft and other stuff like that. I believe they are mostly water-tight. They're common for places where you have lots of wires going to a piece of a vehicle that's removable, like an airplane wing.
    They're round, locking, keyed connectors with lots of separate pins. The common name for them is "cannon plug" or "canon plug", although I think Cannon is a originally a brand name.
    Common pin counts are 6 or 7, 17 and 19 pin, and 51 pin.
    If you look for cannon plug on ebay you'll find lots of them. I'd post links but I think that dumps the comment to the spam filter.
    Love the suit! It's fantastic!

    Does someone know what the silver leather spray Adam used for the gloves is and where to purchase it? I could use that product in several of my own projects and would love to know what it is.

    Oh my god, that symbol on his door. The hand holding the sword. I know that symbol but I can't for the life of me remember where it's from, it's driving me crazy.
