Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the sound of a wailing guitar. In fact, I actually have 7 guitars of my own and love playing them and making them wail. But there is a time and place for everything.
You guys are going hard on the One Day Builds and it's absolutely great. These may be your most time consuming videos but I'm glad you see they are also your highest grossing.
One neat little fact about this helmet is that the window wasn't centered perfectly, since Post only had one eye! He fed compressed oxygen into the helmet right near his face, which would probably freeze your face right off -- except it emptied out onto his eye patch. Such a great tribute to an absolute badass, and such a great build!

J. There is something about a craftsman working that is just is nice to watch. I know and won't call you a master craftsman. Just because you dabble in so much and so different fields of things, from working with fabrics, wood metal, plastics, paints and everything in between. but for the most part, you have an understanding of what you are doing or how it could be done and some learning along the way that is so accessible to so many people that watch this and think "I could build anything I want now". which I have thought many of times watching endless videos of yours. Also reminds me of when I was little watching my granddad make things out of MDF as he was an amateur woodworker from home with the lathe, table saw, drills and all bits and pieces. Great memories from my childhood. Keep up the awesome work with all builds. Very inspiring.
20:24 He's still a child with huge imaginations and big dreams at heart. How can you not laugh as well with Adam here? It's just a heartwarming laugh and smile.
im a welder and when i want to do fake welds for things like this i usually go for silicon out of a caulking gun. you can do the same motion as in mig welding(two steps forward one step back or whip and pause) and you will get very similar looking results after you paint them :D
Super cool! About 20 years ago my father, who at the time was CEO of a huge job shop, built three exact replicas of the helmet. They were constructed as accurately as possible using Wiley Post's original patent documents. Two of the helmets are still on display here in Oklahoma (Where Wiley Post was from). One is in our science museum and the other is in our State's historical center. The real ones are VERY uncomfortable!
My grandfather used to be a royal navy diver and he said the oldschool diving suits and helmets were insanely uncomfortable, also due to chemicals used in some aort of the suit there were serious helth concerns from long term use. So i honestly cant imagine just how uncomfortable this thing was to wear and work in for a prolonged period of time
Hey Adam, great build! You mention maybe painting your mannequin around the 43 min mark. I thought why not paint it with a whiteboard paint, than you could use dry erase markers on it when patterning and wipe it off later. Any ways, love the build! Have a good one!
Helge Frisenett thats a fair point. But if he used if for making it up, recording measurements and working notes in their needed locations than it would be pretty useful in my opinion. He ended up using a different mannequin part way along anyways. You wouldn't have to assemble the fabric on it or pin stuff to it. It could be useful for patterning and determining how to best lay stuff out.
Adam Savage is one of the coolest dudes in the Entertainment/Production Industry, he is so well rounded in his skill base, his ability to think around a problem, and his experience make him definitely one of the best people on youtube to watch to learn about skills that are 'transferable to the entertainment, content production, or even just industrial design type industry/application.
Best Adam Savage line ever - 'Do I have one?' Of COURSE you have one Adam! Love these one day builds with the master maker in the dream workshop so thanks a million for inspiring xD
My favorite thing about these builds, is that you release the walkthrough in comic-con first, which is the content most want to see, and upload the build after (obviously to hide the identidy) but most youtubers will leave the real content for last, almost trying to force viewers to watch the build, but with this style of uploading you actually make me WANT to see how the costume is made, and so i'll sit through the FULL Hour of building, EVERY. TIME. well done to you all at tested, please keep up the amazing work.
I think he could cover up the zipper by using that line of cloth that was in the middle and some velcro. So it would zip up and then just hide it with the middle part, it would like the original and have the zipper functionality
yeah i was thinking this too. build the zipper a bit like a very long fly zipper with the vertical quilted strip being the top layer. Saying that, its a lot of layers to deal with an can get mean at the join at the lower back.
Too bad though they are usually just for looks instead of making "practical stuff" (I count the bottle opener and such as practical). Take the gun props, they would be so much better if they were at least at the toy level functional, you know shooting plastic balls or putting a laser inside.
Yet another amazing Savage project. The weathering, as always, is nothing short of wizardry. So, Adam - next time you decide to have a casting of yourself made into an Adam-equin, be sure to wear a short-sleeve t-shirt and some bicycle shorts so the resulting statue can be used for molding costumes without worrying about the clothing it's wearing. And after it's done, spray it with dry-erase board pain, so you can mark it over and over and later wipe it clean.
Brilliant Adam. I used to work in a design technology department at a London school and know how hard making stuff actually is. When you were doing all that sewing I thought of my 1960s Swiss Bernina sewing machine which as a bobbin winder on the machine. It also coped with 8 layers of furnishing fabric in one go. Thanks for an entertaining video.
That is not how Adam works. First he makes the drawers, then tries to come up with labels for them, and _then_ buys stuff to put in the drawers. And then hopes it will be useful, some day.

Wiley Post was one hell of a guy with a pioneering spirit. First single engine flight around the world follow by first single pilot in a single engine to fly around the world. Your W. Post Pressure suit is fabulous, Wiley would be proud of your efforts.
MERT AYDIN I am designing a Harry potter style wand, I'm using a 300mm by 11mm dowel and I'm wrapping tinfoil around it into the shape of the basilisk which will be covered in filler, sanded and smoothed and painted
MERT AYDIN I'm just designing it for fun, I'm not a designer or anything so it's just guess work. I did make a small BB-8 model out of tinfoil and painted it and made a display case out of perspex for it a month or so ago
He said a few months ago that they were still working on it, it was going slowly but they were making progress. Not sure what that means exactly, even if they were waiting to find accurate materials they could have started on the helmet by now.
Bennett Sampson someone actually answered that a while ago. From what I understand, FOX wasn't happy with something they were doing, and revoked access to the suit, so the project ended up dying.
I love your passion! I love how excited and impatient you get! It’s so refreshing and soo good too see, Thank you Adam and thank you tested! Your videos are awesome, I love the way the are edited and filmed ❤️
Agreed. "Tailor" is the word he was looking for. I thought he would come up with it being such a big fan of Hamilton. "Bro who sews" is pretty good too though lol.
i love your builds Adam, ive watched mythbusters from season one and i loved it, your videos are like shop asmr and youve inspired me to build a few kit guitars and such, models too
If you are going to paint the mannequin, maybe you should try whiteboard paint that way in the future you can draw all you want on him and wipe it away after. It would probably make him stiffer too.
Pretty kool. You may also note that Wiley Post set both altitude and speed records in his suit, while flying a wooden airplane, the Lockheed Vega, named Winnie Mae.
fustigate314159 I am not that savvy on Kubrick. It could be 2010. I know it'll make a tear roll down Adam's face, but 2001 had great effects, but was a total snoozer.
So awesome. Thank you so much for being a huge inspiration for the cosplay community. We follow your work regularly as inspiration for our own builds. You've also been a huge influence in our decision to build our brand and move towards making a living following our passion of helping other cosayers make healthier choices (mentally, physically, and spiritually) for a cosplay life style. So imporgant to give back in our community. Thank you so much for all you do. ♥️♥️♥️
All that aside for a moment, I think you should paint that mannequin photo realistic. I know it's better in it's native monotone state, but the pranks you can pull and even the twinning psychology will make it worth it. That and if you ever need a temporary stand in for...
Yo just realized if u take the numbers and turn them into letters (1=a 2=b etc) 2319 means WS which is white sock. Man the details they put into these movies
the big wing nuts felt crowded cause they were lay down on paper, with the curve of the actual helmet they would've taken extra space created by the shape of the body.
Mind blowing. 80 years ago a man made a suit to push the limits. He wouldn't have given a thought to how it looked. He used it to make history. Now another talented man is building replica to wear hanging on every esthetic detail.
Oh I get it, this is a series that shows the evolution of the space suit culminating no doubt in a fictional future space suit......like from The Martian.
All we could come up with was 'seamster' which seemed a little too organized labor to be correct. However, the power of the internet proved that 'seamster' is indeed a word, although 'tailor' would probably be the more common term. 'Sartor' would also be appropriate. 1:03:44. Thanks Google
Love how he can glue/paper that bouncing tube of material and it works perfectly; while I try to tape wrapping paper on a motionless box and it looks like raccoons did it.
You said something that gave me the idea of a good way to mark the circle for the front! If you lit from above with a powerful light and "Projected" the circle on the rubber, you would have an accurate representation of the circle with with distortion going around the sides! Love your builds and your shop!
the very best tool that you should invest in for your shop is an adjustable level work table. your back will thank you !!!! btw you have one of the best jobs ever. making stuff !!!!
So cool that you did Wiley Post's pressure suit. The one major thing was Mr Post had one eye so he offsetted the view port so his good eye had a better view. Just a little fact Wiley Post and his good friend Will Rogers were killed when their float plane crashed on takeoff from Point Barrows, Alaska. Two American icons were lost.
Adam, to answer your question at 1:03:43 - I work in theatre. In a costume shop, the gender neutral term is "stitcher". Maybe not the exact answer you are looking for, but it's the word I use.
You forgot the fact that the face hole was off centre as Wiley Post had an eye patch on one eye, so he moved the hole sideways to better suit his single functioning eye!
TheAnimystro That would be impractical for Adam as he wouldn’t be able to see on the convention floor very well. Sometimes you have to sacrifice accuracy for practicality 🤷🏼♀️
just like sacrificing the neck entry for a zipper. practicality above going authentic. if he went full authentic. he could have made the whole helmet out of metal. he could totally do it. but it would be heavy, and hard to move around with at a convention.
Indeed, I doubt Post's original design was very good for moving around at all, nor was it intended to be. It's not like he expected to go jogging inside his plane. Building a wearable replica is always a tradeoff.
TheAnimystro He also didn't make it almost impossible to walk in, despite the original design being made for comfortable flying for hours sitting down, so no folds when sitting down. This made it impossible to stand in, and walking had to be done crouched over. But that would suck on the floor of a convention.
You are correct for Wiley's suit, however there were several made for both him and his crew. Those didn't feature the offset viewport, but it was still technically a Wiley Post pressure suit. ;) Then again, if Adam wanted to be accurate, he'd have to get about 6 inches shorter too.
Awesome build Adam ! Maybe one day, i'd like to see you make your own original space suit, how you will see a futuristic one (with imaginable materials that even exist yet).
The mythbusters and plausible metal welded signs on the back wall bring back some good memories of old episodes :) keep on keepin on brother, life's a garden dig it!

He mentions this fact in the Still Untitled episode. And that fixing it would mean a completed rebuild of the helmet which he didn't have time for.
At 43:07 you say you may paint your mannequin. Maybe give it a chalkboard paint job so you can keep marking on it and it won't be permanent

Ryan True what is it you're designing? If I may ask.
MERT AYDIN I am designing a Harry potter style wand, I'm using a 300mm by 11mm dowel and I'm wrapping tinfoil around it into the shape of the basilisk which will be covered in filler, sanded and smoothed and painted
Ryan True Sounds great, is it your job or are you just designing it as a hobby?
MERT AYDIN I'm just designing it for fun, I'm not a designer or anything so it's just guess work. I did make a small BB-8 model out of tinfoil and painted it and made a display case out of perspex for it a month or so ago
I'm sure it'll turn out awesome @RyanTrue.
8:50, Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you... Lord Buckethead! Your new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom!
#LastWeekTonight
we can only hope! :P
So uhhh...whens the martian suit coming?
Bennett Sampson I forgot about that it's been too long
Tested premium only I bet
Bennett Sampson
Premium content.
This is a god sent documentary
I love it
I love your passion! I love how excited and impatient you get!
It’s so refreshing and soo good too see, Thank you Adam and thank you tested! Your videos are awesome, I love the way the are edited and filmed ❤️
4:46 Well there went $70! 😂
We all know this was just an excuse for Adam to buy some outrageously expensive wing-nuts.
Haha I thought this too. He claims the dimensions are exact!! But you cant argue with his eye
eh, at the end of the day, he'll probably need those other wing nuts for something
These are the best hours of my life on this channel.
Tailor, but I am happy to use "SewBro" now that you said "Bro who sews".
Agreed. "Tailor" is the word he was looking for. I thought he would come up with it being such a big fan of Hamilton. "Bro who sews" is pretty good too though lol.
Still gender specific...
i dont think a tailor and seamstress are nearly the same thing
I think you are right... upon further reflection.
@@AdventureArtistOnline bro isnt gender specific, everyone can be a bro
i love your builds Adam, ive watched mythbusters from season one and i loved it, your videos are like shop asmr and youve inspired me to build a few kit guitars and such, models too
One of the best builds that Adam has done. It's up there with the Blade-runner blaster gun-case.
Still watching. But, I thought that I would mention that I love to see such an interesting build.
keep making these long episodes! They are perfect!
You know some people don't admire the effort that people put into costumes I think they deserve a lot of credit good job
"its really starting to look like a thing!"
~Camera man slowly pans up to the giant cylinder.~
Haha yeah me too camera man, me too.
And so begins the rise of the dark lord Darth Tubular!
8:45 "Luke, i am your great, great grandfather..."
Looks a whole lot like the politician Lord Buckethead from the UK.
Oh, turns out Adam knows.
I know him from this: ruclips.net/video/6eQ0s4SBefU/видео.html
Is it just me, or do they keep moving creepy 2001 baby around to put it in shots from all angles. It's following me!
Or is it supposed to be from 2010?
ruclips.net/video/2O1GoZrZPew/видео.htmlm8s
fustigate314159 I am not that savvy on Kubrick.
Watching Adam turn a foam toilet seat and a bucket into something amazing will always brighten my day
All that aside for a moment, I think you should paint that mannequin photo realistic. I know it's better in it's native monotone state, but the pranks you can pull and even the twinning psychology will make it worth it. That and if you ever need a temporary stand in for...
The Sqoou yo you're so right but when the paint starts to ware off it will look nightmarish
put some of those crash test stickers on it.
Ethan Brantley even better.
otakon17 your right
Am i the only one who thinks that this suit reminds me of some of those yellow CDA agents from Monsters Inc? Lol
I thought you were going to say Ralph Kramden's Space Suit.
that is what some friends and i thought
we even said "WE GOT A 23-19!!!"
Yo just realized if u take the numbers and turn them into letters (1=a 2=b etc) 2319 means WS which is white sock. Man the details they put into these movies
@@alexprice9573 get em get em get em
Cody Desbiens or any hazmat suit
the big wing nuts felt crowded cause they were lay down on paper, with the curve of the actual helmet they would've taken extra space created by the shape of the body.
Mind blowing. 80 years ago a man made a suit to push the limits. He wouldn't have given a thought to how it looked. He used it to make history. Now another talented man is building replica to wear hanging on every esthetic detail.
It's still at the top of my bucket list to get in the workshop with this guy. I firmly believe that would be better than Disneyland.
you just casually have a life-size mold of yourself standing in your workshop XD
robert linke
I think it even has nipples poking through the shirt
Evil laugh 20:25
"...color me relieved"
What color is relief, anyhow? I'm going to say it's brown.
I remember that laugh from the show a handful of times... Good to see he hasn't changed, not even a little in all those years.
40:25 Evil laugh 2.0
38:25 Evil laugh 1.75
He is pleased with the progress of the build.. where's the evil in that?
Adam you should build Mark Watneys, Mars space suit from "The Martian"!!!!! That would be so bad ass!!
Adam had original suit in his shop, he took some measurements of it aaaand fox didnt let him to build it
Dang, why did they change their mind? Every time I think about that project I get sad it never got finished...
@@linecraftman3907 when did he say that? Just curious cause he's stated that suit would be a future build it's just a time consuming one.
Sorry, that's all i know
BENDER !! It's so much fun watching your mind work Adam, you have the best job around, your assistant has the 2nd best job
Wow! Fantastic effort and result and love your excitement and joy. Real pleasure to watch you do your thing.
So happy to see Adam finally wearing a mask when spraying :)
It’s Always good to have a Spare you hanging around 🤟🏼🤟🏼
Came out so good. That weathering puts it over the top.
3:24 - "It already looks like a spacesuit," said 6-year-old me.
Ahhh, I've done that myself so many times, bought a backup part and ended up using that instead
Love how he can glue/paper that bouncing tube of material and it works perfectly; while I try to tape wrapping paper on a motionless box and it looks like raccoons did it.
I can tarp a load of lumber in prairie winds and get it so it looks painted on. Don't ask me to wrap a gift in a hurry.
Adam's passion is so intriguing and fun to watch. Keep making videos!
You said something that gave me the idea of a good way to mark the circle for the front! If you lit from above with a powerful light and "Projected" the circle on the rubber, you would have an accurate representation of the circle with with distortion going around the sides! Love your builds and your shop!
Beat me to it with the Lord Buckethead reference :D
Thought of making a Lord Buckethead reference myself, but then I paused for a moment realizing I would almost surely miss to be the first 100 :D
the very best tool that you should invest in for your shop is an adjustable level work table. your back will thank you !!!!
btw you have one of the best jobs ever. making stuff !!!!
"Different movie. This one's reality."
That is a fantastic work of art, it's a cool looking space suit. The history is also captured in that suit. Amazing job
Maybe not the exact answer you are looking for, but it's the word I use.
...And you're sure that isn't a Steam Punk Minion, 2019 SDCC?
Hhhahaha.
Man, must be so much fun having such a well equipped workshop that size.
20:25 , The first thing I thought of is the Knights who say Ni.
That's *LORD* Buckethead to you!
(From That's *LORD* Kelvin to you! Anyone who watched Mythbusters should remember that)
49:20 Is it sad I recognised the music was all just Logic Pro X Samples
The mythbusters and plausible metal welded signs on the back wall bring back some good memories of old episodes :) keep on keepin on brother, life's a garden dig it!
