It's not the destination, Adam. It's the journey. So, I don't think you made the WRONG flamethrower. You simply made A DIFFERENT flamethrower and in doing so, you smoothed out the rough spots for your final flamethrower build by doing proof-of-concept work, on a separate project. Or you made the wrong flamethrower....
Hey Adam! You called yourself a “dummy” in this video and I just wanted you to know you are not a “dummy”. You are a smart and treasured man. Love your videos!
Just before the 4:00 mark, this is what the tag-line is that gets added as the outro. It's not a how-to channel, but a what-happened channel. And I think most fans appreciate that. There's not a lot of reason we needed that story, most would have never known this happened. But Adam doesn't shy from mistakes when they happen. It's almost like.....he's human, like the rest of us.
When my sister got married as part of their wedding gift I made a model of the gazebo where she and her husband first met. I found out about a week before the wedding that I modeled the wrong gazebo.
1:11:22 “Every now and then when you make a prop you realize you could start an international incident.” Definitely not what I expected to hear when I clicked on this video haha
That renshape look really beautiful to work with , it even sounds great when you drill it! Also , imagine having Phil tippett just ring you!!! amazing.
This is why I love watching you. Your attention to detail and the fact inconsistencies bug you I totally get. We live in a world where 'close' will do but it takes so little to get things spot on. Keep doing what you do.
I follow a ton of cosplayers and I don't know a single one who brings such diligence, detail, hard work, and quality to a cosplay like Adam does. This man is amazing and I'm so glad he continues to use his knowledge to make stuff, not just cosplays. It's always a joy to watch these videos.
One of the things I appreciate the most about Adam is that he shows his mistakes openly. It helps to see that everyone is human and things will go wrong.
Seemed like the costume was still pretty hot, even with all the cutting out of additional fabric layers. Would it be possible to incorporate a cooling system into this flamethrower, like you did with at least one spacesuit that I can think of?
if your ever in a hurry trying to dye a piece of fabric, i find pulling a light vacum on the container im using helps. forces the dye in to every bit of the fabric.
honestly Adam I'm not even that big of a fan of these kind of videos, I'm really just watching them to see something from you. You're something like a handycraft Bob Ross in my eyes :D
OMG @ the 25:41 minute mark, your draws for your compasses are gorgeous!. Oh my gosh I love your drawer, organization set up for your compasses. Being a leather worker I have a lot of tools and I have draw envy now😂😂😂😂 because I’d give my eye teeth to have your set up
I really admire your patience when a mistake happens. You always keep pushing through to complete what you started. Really inspirational to me and my projects. Love your work Adam!
Seeing the tanks as you assembled them made me think of a jet pack, and then I thought “wouldn’t it be cool to make the costume from The Rocketeer?” So, yeah. That would be cool. Great job by the way, love John Carpenter’s The Thing.
If you need to drill in a spot that even your right angle drill won't fit in, they make stubby hex shafted drill bits that can fit in a right angle bit driver, and then you can stick that on an extension to reach inside tight spots. It's like 2 inches total. Only needed to do that a couple times, and it is fairly wobbly, but if you need it you need it.
Another trick to use with para cord is melt the end and while it is still on fire have about 3ft loose and spin it around as fast as it can. It will make a needle that is easy to thread through holes or repair gear in the field.
That's an amazing build! I would love to see a video on grommets some day. It seems every time I use them, the material just rips through and so I've given up using them until I can get a good grip on them. Thanks for all you do!
CB2001 from the RPF here. As someone who has cosplayed as MacReady, building the flamethrower was a pain, especially when living in a small town and the materials you have are only available through hardware stores. But, overall, it came out well enough that I had people doing doubletakes on the convention floor. Excellent build, Mr. Savage. :D
13:00 I always do that too, where would I store this where I will look for it or can easily find it. And then 9 out of 10 times it'll take me hours to find again a year later. However, stuff that I dropped on my cluttered/stuff layered desk 2 years ago I will just reach and grab in seconds.
Beautifully crafted, Adam! Would have been great to see more footage of the painting and weathering process though, because the final piece looks incredible!
Just for reference, there's an old military instructional video on doing rivets here on YT. Included in it is a section on doing aviation rivets which have to be flush with the rest of the body. Worth checking out for projects like this. Some flush rivets, a little filler and sanding and you get an invisible bond
Would love to see you put a blowtorch for the in the end of it to give the "pilot flame" look. Obviously not for showing at convention but would look badass in photoshoots
The sound of Adam tapping that material is so satisfying. It must be an amazing material to sculpt with. I've never considered wood turning on a metal lathe. That's awesome.
So Crazy, I had Just finished watching Light & Magic on Disney before watching this video. My Ears perked up when you said you had answer when Phil Tippett calls. Man is a genius!
Absolutely love what you do. Every project you embark on is as great as the last, You don't make a single one boring. And its so cool watching as these detailed replicas come to life.
Re-watching the drinking alcohol episode. You drunk and falling off treadmill is a classic ! Saw you at the Fox in Atlanta way back. Love you guys. RIP Grant 🙏
13:30 I do the opposite. If I'm trying to find something, I ask myself where I'd put it now, if I'd just bought it. That often helps me to find things when I've forgotten where I placed them.
I love the temporary/permanent fix of the locking pliers to give him more leverage on the grommet machine. Everyone has something like that in their shop.
From what I've seen of the Amazon reviews for these things...the cast iron handle seems to break on a lot of them. I think his fell victim to the same flaw in the casting process.
Love to see a grommet press. We had one at the Boy Scout camp I worked at and it was lovingly referred to as the “finger remover”; I doubt I need to tell you why….
Sometime back in the 90s I was watching a VHS of Tim Allen doing a stand up routine about tools. The only part I remember is he's talking to a sales guy and asks 'ooooooooh, whats that?' Salesman says "Why, thats a conduit bender." Tim replies in his classic grunt of approval and asks, "What does it do?" Salesman replies again "Well, it bends conduits." Tim replies with an even more excited grunt "I'll take it!". He concludes by saying he's never once used it, but it sure looks good hanging up on the tool wall. ...it was funnier back then lol
My friend and I rented his men are pigs standup back in the day. I think we probably had the whole thing memorized we watched it so much. I’ve watched parts of it sense but not the whole thing. Still found it funny but man, I remember laughing uncontrollably at those bits.
Hi Adam, isn't it a thought to make a footswitch for your plastic former/vacuum? It seems like you lose a second of important 'forming time' the moment you have to switch from holding on to the plastic and reaching for the vacuum switch?
This is such an awesome build! The only thing I would add to it is some insulation/foam/filler of some kind to all of the tanks. This could be used to add weight, but the primary thing would be to make the tanks sound less hollow, and give then illusion of thicker tank material.
You can also solve the problem with the para cord by using a “fid.” It’s a hollow metal needle which is threaded in the open end. You insert the cord and twist.
This is an awesome build! But I found myself noticing one of the holes on the back pad was ungrommeted and going "Adam, Adam! Adam, there's a-you missed one! Surely he'll noti-Adam!" xD I am glad you were able to bounce back after the tank dilemma and get it done, magnificent job! Heh, "international incident". xD
One trick to storing and finding huge amounts of random things is to make a document of everythings location. Then if you happen to forget, you can ctrl-f and find it instantly.
I had to pause the video and go look through my shop for my conduit bender.... I did not find it..... do they just disintegrate after a certain amount of time not being used?
I forget the name, we used 4inch thick 4x8ft sheets for like $200 - it was an engineering foam board, very very similar to what you showed. We use to use to to prove out some of our cnc machine tasks. contact your plastics supplier they might have it or similar
Loved the fact that Phil Tippett called. Go watch the "Light & Magic" documentation if you haven't yet. It's brilliant so far (three episodes in), and Phil's stories are moving and inspiring.

Didn't they just use a real flamethrower in the movie?
Are you guys doing a giveaway?
I got a message to use telegram to contact you for a gift.

Like Edison once said: (yeah, I know... Edison...) "I didn't fail 1000 times; I learned 1000 ways to not make a light bulb!"
Adam Savage randomly dancing in the middle of the build is a mood I am *here* for
New Order gets your feet moving
"I replicated the wrong flanethrower." Haha! Not something many people can say.
You can deff buy a flame thrower online you know... totally legal
Keep doing what you do, Mr. Savage. Third decade of entertainment. Thank you!
Falling asleep with one of Adam’s videos on is a great way to have some really strange dreams.
Hey Adam! You called yourself a “dummy” in this video and I just wanted you to know you are not a “dummy”. You are a smart and treasured man. Love your videos!
The petri dish test is absolutely the effect you and corridor should compete on next, with the thing blood popping out of the tray and all that
SHOUT ;)
The speed at which this man works is impressive. That's decade's of experience right there. (So much respect)

It also sounded like he was seriously considering just walking around the streets with it. XD
Loved this whole journey, AND I just want to say the editing on this was 🔥!
52:30 The juxtaposition between the first and second editions in this shot gave me a chuckle. Children of the same frenetic creator.
That renshape look really beautiful to work with , it even sounds great when you drill it! Also , imagine having Phil tippett just ring you!!! amazing.
Looks like something i would buy a few hundred bucks worth of...and get burried with 90% of it because it's too valuable to ever use.

Iced water in the tanks, pumped around a cooling vest?
@@alwayscensored6871 Yeah, something to that effect.
How can a bloke look like he rushes "Everything" Come out with this stuff?? Pure genius to be fair I love you dude x

The brilliance of the transition at 1:00:20 😙👌💕 (and the dance sequence it leads to)
In case Adam might need it, the Makita DDA350 18V drill is an even lower profile at the keyed chuck. I got one for that particular reason.
That's an amazing build!
I would love to see a video on grommets some day. It seems every time I use them, the material just rips through and so I've given up using them until I can get a good grip on them.

This coming up on autoplay immediately following your new member question video about "how much research should I do?" is poetic.
A b3autiful piece. This will entertain thousands of people for years to come.
Adam's commentary and insights are brilliant, but what I think I enjoy the most is seeing Adam making things to make other things - fascinating.
Take a bow Adam Savage, another epic video.
Thank you very much!
Adam, I love your videos for many reasons. The two biggest are your talent and they are like fever dreams.
Failure, and overcoming the failure. That's my favorite type of lesson, that sometimes comes at a very dense cost
23:36 the tattoo is useful indeed lol
Amazing work!
The laptop on the edge of the work table is giving me anxiety 😂

It's Awesome watching Adam think real hard! He's a Genius!
34:00 in that laptop placement is STRESSING ME OUT.
Love the editing!
nice sound timing with the Dancing ............ Great work from the editor at around 1h in the Video..... loved it
I remember in school we used to bend pipe with heat but we first fill it with sand so it wouldn't flatten out.
The built looks amazing
Throwing in a Repo Man reference was awesome!
I love that movie!

Incredible!!!❤️❤️❤️
What is the name of the gauge tool Adam is using to cut the plastic with at 48:05? I want to add one to my collection.
Just from the colors and texture of the unpainted build it looks like it would make a damn fine cup of coffee
Love watching Adam fluff about in the workshop
The sound of Adam tapping that material is so satisfying. It must be an amazing material to sculpt with.
I've never considered wood turning on a metal lathe. That's awesome.
It's not wood, it's RenShape, a plastic.
@@MadMorgie6318The technique is wood turning. The material is irrelevant. Not sure how you confused that.

I don't know of anyone who built anything great out of success; failing and pivoting is what made all the greatest movies and things. 🥳
I'm really digging the time lapse music on this video.
