  • Huion has announced two new Kamvas Studio computer tablets measuring in at 16 and 24 inches. Can they take on the current reigning champion of digital art, the Apple iPad?! I speculate while reacting to the announcement trailer.

I think this is more of a Surface Pro/Surface Laptop competitor than an iPad competitor.
The 16 doesn't seem like a "portable" device (pulling it out on the train/in the park) so much as it is a "mobile" device (sitting in a coffee shop/library), where portability is the main strength of the iPad, IMO. As opposed to the surface Pro/Surface laptops being "sit down in a public office setting and work for hours" devices.
Plus, for me, personally, Win11, as an OS, is not really built for portable usage.
While you can use a keyboard to supplement the iPad experience, you don't need it.
Whereas, for Win11 art, I feel you ABSOLUTELY need a keyboard for hotkeys, and I don't think it'll be any different for the HKSs.
    And there's that price.
Like you mentioned, having different configurations mitigates the cost of getting an iPad, and those base prices (for the studios) are NOT friendly to the kinds of people who invest in Huion.
I think this is good, tho. I think Wacom (the mobile studio pro), Microsoft (the Surface line), and Apple (the iPad), could use the competition.
The problem will be whether or not Huion gauges the market for these devices. There's been a few attempted competitors (the HP ZBook x2 g4, the Acer Concept D series). But having felt their absence in conversation, I'm guessing that the devs misjudged the disposable income potential customers would/could spend on devices like these (I do NOT have even $1K to spend on $3K+ devices) and they didn't make as much an impact as these device makers would hope (For me, with the HP Zbook, it became very frustrating to watch HP, Microsoft and Wacom slowly drop support on the hardware, software and pen driver sides).
As for file transfers, I mostly have the Files app synced to Dropbox. Not as ideal (especially when Files and Dropbox lag when syncronizing), but it works for me.
But, as I said, I think this is good, tho. I think Wacom (the mobile studio pro), Microsoft (the Surface line), and Apple (the iPad), could use the competition.

competition is good, but at this price there's not much competition going on, but rather a device I wouldn't even consider at all because of the way too high price. If it had all 2023 hardware I would understand the high price, but since it's all outdated hardware (except for the pen and arguably the screen) this makes no sense at all to buy. The competion has mini-led or oled at the same price and up to date cpu's and a lot of more storage.
I don't think this device makes the competition worried about anything at all. Doubtful this will do good and the lack of reviews is a silent witness to that already. Reviewers don't get review models and are unwilling to invest in these for review. Can't say I blame them. So far there's only one review of a real unit, the rest are all previews, just talking about it, without having tried it at all. I can read the spec sheet too and draw my own conclusion from it, don't need a RUclipsr for that.
The devices look great, but the prices are so far off... especially for Huion's own fanbase.

Oh, that’s a good thought! I haven’t had the opportunity to try a Surface yet. Are they priced similarly to the Kamvas Pros? I was kinda surprised Huion wanted to get into the the all-in-ones since they seem to be a lot more pricey than what they’re kinda known for but maybe the Kamvas Studio 22 did well enough for them to keep pursuing it

@@benjamina6915 I totally agree with you. I'm currently using a Wacom Intuos Pro Large Paper edition and I was tempted to step to a Display tablet. When I read about the release of these Kamvas Studio I got excited...but after reading the specs and looking at the products 2 things popped in my mind...The Studio 24 is not portable and using the same money you can get a better display tablet and a better Computer...Studio 16...well I made an experiment...I have cut a box with the real size of this device and personally I found the working area a bit small (maybe using a 32 4k BENq monitor made me spoiled)...but overall are the specs that made me worry...Even Photoshop if you have big size files I guess is going to suffer....so the use of this device is only for small/medium size files and surely not usable for any 3D...(about that I'm sure because to build a computer capable to handle Cinema 4D - Arnold 7 / Vray 5 app I had to use a ryzen 5950 X 64 GB RAM and an RTX 3080TI and it is still a bit slow sometimes so please...whoever claims this spec are ok for 3D is not honest....in addition even the clock speed is not great and many softwares are not multi threads and so cannot work well...) it is a pity because the idea is interesting....but thinking carefully hardware tend to be outdate very fast..so basically these devices are going to decrease their value much more than a normal display tablet. The idea , as you have perfectly said, the hardware of these devices is already outdate is a bit too much to accept...

@@msganga1974 In the past I had the Kamvas GT191 - 19.5", that's a nice size to work on. Since I'm working at different venues, I do have a Kamvas 16 2021. Perfect size for me, so I already knew the Studio 16 would be the right size for me. I'm not using heavy 3D apps that often anymore, so I don't need something too beefy. Neither of the Huion Studio's should be recommended for that. I've got a decent workstation for that, but dragging that around and the Kamvas 16 pen display is just a little too much. Being portable triggered my interest.

The Wacom Companion could double as a screen tablet for a desktop or laptop, but if I remember correctly, it was either one or the other. Meaning, if you plugged it into another computer, it went into tablet mode and forgot that it was also a computer so you couldn't just drag and drop files on to your main machine. That would be an awesome addition to this thing. I guess the closest is a dropbox kind of situation, but it's not exactly what you're talking about.

Hey Jamie! The Iris XE is...Okay, but would be better with 32gb of memory instead of 16gb. The Nvidia RTX in the 24-inch is a much better graphics card, and you get the 32gb of memory. These are definitely competition for the Surface Studio line, which will probably give us better versions next year for both lines. The 16 inch will probably get really hot, though, just like the Surfaces do because of the form factor which doesn't have as much cooling vents as they need. Cheers!

@@DrawJam Despite having better specs the issues with the Surface are the same as the iPad. It's a 13" screen with a lot of glare. Also, both the iPad pen and the Surface pen have only 4k levels of pressure compared to the 8k that the Huion and Wacom pens have. A better comparison would be the Huion Studio vs the Wacom Studio.

    • @jrobertdeans
      @jrobertdeans Год назад +1

It's more than just one company's Studio va the other because of the pens. Windows runs on their N-trig technology, which still has issues with jitter and parallax despite ten years of trying. Huion uses EMR, which is the tech developed by Wacom, and is better with tilt, parallax, and jitter. Lenovo used to use EMR on their Yoga Carbon 2 in 1 machines, and they were as good as anything Wacom put out...before Lenovo was sold to a Chinese company. If you're used to Wacom or Apple, the Huion is the best bet. If you know Microsoft, then you're used to it's pecadillos.

  • @thinthle
    @thinthle Год назад +1

One one hand I like my Huion pen way better then the apple pencil and wish ipad made an attempt at any collaboration for better pens.
On the other hand I'm afraid the studio 16 is gonna have the same problems as the cintique companion 2. The specs look okay on paper but the the configuration makes it so they overheat and Photshop runs so slow you might as well run it on a phone and it'd do better. In that regard i don't like how closed of the apple ecosystem is but atleast they've made sure to optimize most apps and services for their devices. But it's stupid how they sabotaged the latest Ipads to make them not good enough to upgrade because you lose the support for easy magnetic charging with the apple pencil 2.0. and they're more expensive then their better counterparts from 2018. So I should probably just cave in and buy a refurbished one but then we're back to the Wacom and Huion have way nice more comfortable ergonomic pens dilemma. And it's not like I'm rich enough to just get both.

I use something called the Neo-Flex arm from a company called Egotron. I think I got it on Amazon. Key thing to look for in a monitor arm is the weight it's designed for. Check the weight of your device and then the weight load the arm can handle. The Neo-Flex works, but I wouldn't call it top of the line. I'm sure there are way better arms, but this one was affordable at the time and shipped really quickly on amazon.

I think you're missing the mark comparing either device with an iPad Pro. the iPad Pro has wonderful technology that Apple will never truly liberate and the OS has all the limitations you mention. If I had the money to throw around - yes I'd get an iPad but I'd also still want something with a proper OS or at least allowed the power of a proper OS to come through. Then you have to remember the iPad is also size limited to 12.9 in a time when most desk bound artists want bigger drawing area.
I'm in the market to replace my old HP zbook x2 g3 and the Huions look like they compete more with Wacom Mobile Studio pro / Microsoft Surface Studio / Acer Concept D7 Pro and Concept D9 pro or at a push the Samsung 360.
Well - discount the last two as the D9 Pro never really materialised even at $5000 each for an 18 inch screen. The D7 Ezel Pro looks to now be discontinued - only the D3 Ezel is offered in my country - (just looked on Acer's US store and the shop now button does nothing - just like the one in my country). So you're basically looking at alternatives like:
    Acer D9 - vaporware at $5000 - 15.6" screen
    Acer D7 - vaporware at $3500 - 15.6" screen
Surface Studio 2+ - at $4500 - 28" screen (11th Gen CPU) BUT it now supports the Slim Pen 2 so no more wobbly lines when drawing. Add accessories like Slim Pen 2, Keyboard at $5300
Wacom Mobile StudioPro - $2400 - the gold standard but previous model had a bad reputation for breaking.
Samsung 360 Pro - 16" screen is great for 2D but Samsungs struggle with heavier 3D work - they achieve thin and light by not putting any real graphics support in those laptops.
So for my needs - Photoshop / Resolve / Blender / Affinity Designer and plenty of cash to throw around - the Studio with a 28 inch screen at $5300
More realistically, the Huion 24 comes with plenty ports and the 1650 graphics card is a good mid-range card that would help with 3D work. I don't like the weight or feel of Huion pens though - and the spring in the pen on my old Kavas 13 Pro was an awful feel. If Huion offered an alternative pen and had felt nibs - this would be a much more realistic option for me.
Conclusion - I'm more likely to get a separate 24" screen for now and sell off my zbook. I'd go with a desktop for better thermals and graphics capability. I already have a Mac Mini M2 Studio so I have the power to run blender and Resolve easily.

I think you're right. Someone else said that a surface or similar tablet computer would have been a better comparison. I've never really used one of those so I just went with what I know, but maybe I can test drive one at the local Best Buy for a few hours before they kick me out.
Oh, Huion pens do have a felt tip option now, but if you didn't really dig the spring feel or the weight of the thing, I'm not sure that would help much.
I don't think you can beat a desktop if you're doing 3D work. Well, I guess they keep saying the M1 iPads have the capacity for it, but there aren't a whole lot of iOS 3D programs to choose from just yet.

I think you're largely right about 3D work on a desktop but the funny thing I found was that Blender sculpting didn't work with the Wacom in my zbook. No pressure at all - so I use Nomad Sculpt for sculpting and it's available on iPad and Android (I bought a Samsung S8 tablet)
Anyhow, I might go and test a Huion somewhere with a felt nib - might just try and get used to the spring tip.

I have a 13 inch 2.5k Kamvas Pro, and it has two glaring issues that I largely forgive due to the low price. If they have not fixed these then I'd never spend this kind of money on a Huion.
    1. Cursor accuracy gets really bad when you draw near the edges. Not a big deal, but it gets annoying when selecting layers and tools. It also feels like it gets less accurate if you don't hold your pen in a consistent position.
    2. Color accuracy is pretty not great.
I'd buy a Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 well before I ever got near something like this given the price range. Much more accurate pen, 3k OLED screen, quiet fans, and Samsung is an easier company to get ahold of. Otherwise, I'd just buy a desktop and a separate tablet monitor once I get into this price range.

@@DrawJam They only recently dropped the Book 3 pro 360. The Book 2 only had a 1080p display, which always felt too low res for a lot of art needs. I do a lot of line art, so it was always too low for me. Now that they have a 16 inch, 3k display with their EMR pen, unless you need the extra GPU power for 3D work, it seems hard to beat to beat. For 2D artists like myself, it looks near perfect.
The EMR S-Pen feels better to me than windows AES pens. So I'd buy it over a Surface device in that regard. And the S-Pen definitely has better accuracy than the Huion in all regards. The Huion pen seems like it has a slightly lighter touch on the initial activation force though, and the Samsung has a glossy screen which would definitely matter for some people.
I have an old Galaxy Book 12, which was great, but it only had 4gb of ram. Way too low to do any substantial work on windows. But it had a QHD screen. For whatever reason, they stopped making Windows Tablets, and then it took them years to make a foldable laptop with a high res screen. Now that it is out, I'd basically always recommend either the iPad Pro, or this new Samsung laptop for people who want a mobile experience with top tier color accuracy and pen quality. So Huion has a lot to live up to to justify that price even on their 16 inch model.
