This guy has no business giving this tip for free and yet here we are. You're doing god's work sir, you just earned a subscriber 👌
Thanks so much!
I've never seen anyone breakdown when to cut like this. This is really good!
Thanks so much!
Buddy, you have unlocked a huge lock in my mind. Thank you. Keep it up!
You are quite welcome! Thanks for watching!
this guy deserves an award just for the fact that he didn't drag this out into a 9-15 minute video
Haha. I appreciate that! Thanks for watching!
There's Tarkovsky's book "Sculpting in time" and his "Lectures on directing" and "Lessons of directing", although idk if last two has English translation but it has to be included in "Sculpting of time" at least partially. So he approaches editing totally different, that you as a director start to outline editing prior to the screenplay even (when you just had an idea), and then you edit pieces based on the "feeling of the flow of the time in the shot (frame)", his main point that movie is about capturing the (flow of) time in itself, and movie in the whole is like mosaic of time (pieces), like "canned time", so you can't put together two shots with "different time (flow)" together while editing like a plumber can't put together two pipes of different diameter. I should add that by the (flow of) time he meant not the physical movement in the frame, not the speed of that movement in ontological sense, but rather something much more thorough as a dimension or so, literally capturing the time on the film.
What triggers me and utterly upsets that almost every single modern movie has the same editing and the same editing feeling, and when I watch let's say Bergman's movies or Robert Bresson's ones, it's such a nice breath of fresh air...
Thank you for your thoughtful comment!
@@mengespost and thank you for short and really informative video! (sorry for my passive-aggressive tone of the original comment, I'm autistic and there's some stuff that triggers me, especially when it's about cinema 🥲)
All good! I learned a few things from your comment =)
Wow, youtube is reading my mind
Thank you for watching!
Same here 🤯
Honestly this is huge for me to learn from you in just a short time, thank you so much for what you do for us all
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
It’s interesting to hear someone articulate parts of the editing process that many editors instinctively “feel” are the right things to do, even if they don’t know exactly why.
I often struggle with this myself, explaining to a fellow editor why I did what I did. My explanation is usually that my intuition kicks in and the problem-solving takes place on the timeline. Very vague, but hey, videos like these might help me get better at explaining why I do what I do.
Thanks for the video!
My pleasure! I agree that intuition is a big part of editing!
I am absolutely speechless. I watch many videos on RUclips but never seen before video like this. Thank you for creating such a masterpieces. Love from India Mumbai
Wow, thank you! I appreciate your kind words!
Subscribed on behalf of a small nonprofit animal rescue. We are not professional editors but can certainly leverage these tips to improve the mission videos we make. Telling the stories of our rescued dogs and cats is important so finding this free educational tool to improve even our self taught, novice iMovie skills is incredible! Thank you Austen!
That's wonderful! Thank you for your comment!
thank you very much!!!! SO HELPFUL!!!
great vid!
Thanks so much!
great video bro if you make the light on your face a little softer and your background a little darker it would make your video even more beautiful
Thanks so much!
@@mengespost keep it the same way. Your hear to tech not be a mickey mouse RUclipsr who care more about how they look so they can sell their videos
Don't think he cares about looking beautiful. He is here to teach not sell you something based on image. He ain't a mickey mouse RUclipsr wanting you to like how he looks he wants to teach.
Agree! I think the video is great!
This is such a simple concept that I totally missed out. thank you for sharing this!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!

I came to watch your video very skeptical, because of the title and I'm leaving as a subscriber. Keep it up!
Thanks for the kind words!
Thank you, Menges, for this video. I would love to watch more videos like this from you. There are so many creators who just teach the effects, but I want to learn the psychology behind the cuts and editing. What is in the editor's mind with every cut or effect? I want that. ☺️
Thank you for watching and for the great feedback! I have more videos planned about editing psychology. Stay tuned!
First time viewer and now subscriber. Really helpful, clear advice.

Amazing video, thanks!
My pleasure! Thanks for watching!
You're really good at explaining stuff !
Grrat video
I appreciate that! Thank you for watching!
There's also feel. It's hard to explain but people who do edit knows the exact frame to cut. You play the clip and hit space as fast as you can the moment you feel it should cut. You'll know it if it's a frame off or it should be a frame more but you'll know that feeling when it's the exact timing to cut.
Great insight! Thanks for watching!
Thank you mate❤
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!

Hi, such a great video. Can you make a video on how to do multi-camera audio dialogue ducking? For instance, I know we can do it manually if you have three speakers and you want just one of them to speak audio, but is there a faster way?
Great idea! I will keep that in mind as I make future videos.
you have a new subscriber due to your amazing content
I appreciate that! Thanks for watching.
Sweet video!
Thanks so much, Scott!
Really helpful
Great to hear!
Wonderful video, showing your profession so well!. I have to watch carefully and take notes, I barely started to long format videos and I need every tip for editing! Can you also mention if you do scripting for the talks and explanations, what is the best approach to record and cut talks? I do a long recording session and find myself making mistakes, talking too much and unintentionally have filler words and silent moments. It makes it very hard to edit..
Thanks for your comment! And nice channel and guitar playing! It definitely takes me several takes to get all of my words out correctly =) I have heard about some AI tools that might assist with cutting out pauses and bad takes, but I haven't tried any yet.
@@mengespost thank you so much for the insight! I'll make scripts from now on, and hopefully I can cut videos in a way that my explanations will be seamless!
Also thank you for checking the channel, it's very kind of you and appreciated! I really don't mind cutting the takes myself, as long as I talk very cleanly and without any fillers I think :)
I wish you the very best in your journey, I'll do my best to spread the word about the educational content that you make :)
Thank you so much, my friend!
Thanks man 🤓
My pleasure, Jona! Thanks for watching!
Great content! Editing is not just operating a tool.
I appreciate that!
Hey, really appreciate it. What about fpv drone shots for real estate, can I make them more interesting?
Thanks for your comment! I think I would have to see an example.
Your timing is spot on… loved that intro 🎉
Thanks so much!
Very helpful. I do my editing in Camtasia and was looking for something like this. Thx!
Excellent! Thanks for watching!
Its cool you're doing videos like these. I think today cameras RUclipsrs do videos for the sake of doing content selling thier looks. Its all about their image.
Personally have always cut my videos like this. I lernt by watching many films then series. It was a study for me. So when editing this type of cut is ingrained in my brain. Look forward to seeing more videos form you
Very cool! Thanks for watching!
Keep making videos, your channel is going to blow soon!
Thanks so much! Will do!

Wow! I really do. Haha.
To be honest, the camera position of yours making me uncomfortable, not being rude, it's an advice, try put the camera up above your head or eye level, yhe position it is right now, feels like i am looking UP to you.
