Nice video. I'm glad you save this wonderful machine. This was the last machine my dad bought back in 1965. I remember the sound of the turbo like it was yesterday.

Even after it starts you can use the glow plugs for a bit. The reason for the reverse dump is so when loadin trucks pulling both levers raises and dumps at the same time and vice versa for lowering and bucket return. And crawler loaders don't usually have real tall grousers on the tracks to aid in less resistance while turning. Try raising the bucket a pinch when it starts to slip. That will transfer some extra weight to the tracks. I dont mean any of this as critecism just some things I learned over the years. There's a lot of life left in that ol beast. Great video.

I just bought an Allis Chalmers HD5G looks pretty close to your cat. Mine has the same track pads on it and they do slip. I thought about welding on grousers also but many old timers told me the loader crawlers have street pads on then so when they have a bucket load and turn they slip and don't destroy the undercarriage. It makes sense to me I'll just make it work. Also mine is currently stuck in a sink hole and has been for a damn month as it's been too wet to get down and get it out🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️Anyway great looking machine!

Similar but a lot smaller. This also has a power shift trans. Not a ‘straight stick’ as they say. HD5 traxcavators came with one of two tracks. Street pads or medium grouser. HD5 dozers has a wide pad, full grouser. As far as I know the all had the same final drive

Very nice 977H! I just got lucky and bought an old 977H with pedal steer. I adjusted the brakes all the way in and I have no braking. How hard was it to replace the brake bands? Did you have to remove the whole clutch assembly or did you remove the brake bands with everything else still in place? Any details would be greatly appreciated!

I'm going from memory here so bare with me. When I removed my bands to re-line them I got inside the rear compartment. On each side/track there is an inspection cover you can remove that gives you access to the bands. When I opened mine up they were full of dirt and grease so I put diesel in there and ran it around a little. On the bottom side of the casting there are drain plugs you can use to get that out. The easiest way I can explain how the bands work is like an old school oil filter wrench. The ones with the metal band that as you physically turn them they tighten against the filter. Works exactly the same way the band rides in there and when you push the pedal it tightens and locks the track. As the pads wear they need to be adjusted compensate until the point they need replaced. When I did mine I didn't pull the tank or anything I accessed it all from the inspection plate. Once you're in there you'll have to take the pedal linkage apart and separate the band and the band will come out. I was lucky my bands were in good shape, everything was able to be re-used. As a side note I had ordered a set of break pads form General gear out of Idaho

Idaho. They were lost in the mail at no fault of their own so I got a set of pads from Cat. They pads were the exact same other than the Cat pads were double the price, didn't include the rivets, and weren't pre-drilled. My neighbor eventually brought me the pads I'd ordered from general and they were ready to go. Still have then on my shelf. I home that helps I suck at explaining stuff!

      Think the 977 was always a 6 cylinder, 955 was a 4 cylinder.

It's gonna need sprockets soon. When you do it change the cleats on the tracks to grousers. It'll spin alot less

Back in the day before exavator loaded dumps. These baby's where the Kings. Cat though it was better to have the dump bucket pulled the same as raising the boom. The funny thing is you run a old Cat art. Wheel loader it was push dump lever forward. I guess CAT though it was better to pull lever back to dump. What can you say about Cat there new big Graders are just 2 levers on each side of seat. No steering wheel.

It leaks down in a hour or so and I'm worried about getting caught if it falls !!!. I did remove the bucket so just raising the arms only !! Can anyone please help ????. Thanks. Gary as you sit in the seat there will be a lever you can find with your right hand that will allow the frame to fold forward. The batteries will be under there!
