    Het Steve, I served a five year engineering apprenticeship with Caterpillar in the UK in 1963. They gave four of us a 1927 D2 dozer to restore. When we finished it they had it on show in the foyer. It had a petrol start which once running switched over to TVO paraffin.

    First, Please adjust those tracks. Place a straight 2x4 on top of the track from the support roller to top of front idler 1.5”- 2” from top of track to bottom of board. You almost lost the left one when parking look at the right inside sprocket see it jump and pop back in. You put that thing back O1 condition and it work for your grandkids. ChiefD

    Kudos to you!! Finally someone who actually wants to see what they are working on. A clean machine is so much nicer to open up without crap getting in and on everything.

    Hi Steve, on all the Will It start videos I have watched, the use of a "starting hammer" sometimes helps - Not the Ideal way to move a froze starter - seized In UK talk (see I`m learning American) lol, but the best way is the way you chose I guess.. I love watching big `ol diesels coming back to life - Thank you for the video - Ian - UK

      I got a starter on my boat built in 1938 and the starter is just like that but i get down and massage the starter and coax the mechanism with a screw driver and usually she starts just fine, then when it is warm will start on command without the massage and sweet words.

  • @roygunter3244

    I am always amazed at how much of a track machine runs in dirt. You know they are the most expensive of all machines to run because of the grit wearing away at so many parts. A small leak on an oil seal on a wheeled tractor that serves the same purpose is an annoying problem but when that leak is in the dirt all the time the part is getting ground away just like sand blasting it. When you need them nothing else will do but if you can do it with a rubber tired machine it will be cheaper to operate.

    Curious, but is it an American thing about the thought with the flat track pads? In the UK they are known as construction or road pads, and not fitted to make it turn better, rather than to not tear up tarmac/asphalt and or damage the machine by it digging in on turning like agricultural grousers would, nice machine but like I said, I'm curious about your thoughts on the track purpose.

    The track shoes are 3 bar like that to run on asphalt. Excavators run the same 3 bar shoes. The 3 bar shoes don't tear up the asphalt.
    I have the same machine. Yours is in very good shape except for the rails. It looks like you are already out all the way on your adjustment. If not you don't have much left. My machine has been well used but has new undercarriage. Kind of the exact opposite of yours.

    • @ThisWeekWithCars
      @ThisWeekWithCars  4 года назад

      I will have a new video on this out soon I have been doing a lot of work on it but not the undercarriage yet. I am leaving that for last because I know that could become a mess to sort out. Luckily I have a track rebuilder locally but I have not talked to them yet.

    • @markmeister2444
      @markmeister2444 4 года назад

      I bought a Komatsu D75S bucket machine a couple years ago and it also has the 3 bar shoes and I wish it had the 2 bar type but I'm not gonna gripe to much because the tracks , chains and sprockets were brand new when I bought it.
      Your D4 looks like it will make a nice little machine for you to restore and play with and your friends hauler was a pretty nice piece also.

In my opinion there aren't enough channels on RUclips that rescue these old dozers and fix them up and give then a new lease on life.
