I think Universal got spooked by the drop Twisters had in its second weekend (because it had to go up against D&W) because they’re not even giving it the full 31-day window they usually give to films that open to $50+ million.

    • @K_Rob
      @K_Rob Месяц назад +3

@@MysteryMii this tactic goes deeper than that. Last year they put Mario on VOD a month after release despite historic legs and grosses. They weren’t spooked of Twisters drop. They just simply don’t care unless a filmmaker like Nolan has it contractually obligated to keep it off VOD. The only studios that seem to be committing to longer plays is Disney/Marvel/Fox and Sony with some exceptions in their releases.

    • @MysteryMii

@@K_Rob I mean yeah, but Universal isn’t even sticking to its own rules in this case. So without knowing anything about TBW, we went to see that first ... and all of us, I mean I group of at least 20 people thought it was the worst thing we had ever seen and could not understand why people were into it....
THEN, days after we saw the marketing for the film and realized they ran with a GIANT lie that it was supposed to be some type of complication of found footage 🤣
But that situation always make me laugh when I think about the power of marketing vs us who thought someone purposely made that movie like that 😂
So going into The Matrix, we were all SKEPTICAL AF because of how much of a letdown TBW was, but my God from the opening shot of the Matrix when the camera froze Trinity in the air and spun around the room. ALL our mouths were on the floor the entire movie 🤣

Most theaters usually have a dedicated auditorium for Fathom Events that aren’t on DCPs, so if a Fathom Event isn’t in that auditorium, chances are that it’s on a DCP and not a glorified Dish DVR recording (no joke that’s literally what Fathom uses for non-DCP showings).

It's a sequel to a film called 100% Wolf that released in 2020, and attached to a kids/preteen animated series. Both the film and tv series are from Australia. I have a feeling it will get an almost nothing theatrical release in the US - I'm seeing almost zero info on it so far, just from the production studios' Instagram. It is a bit juvenile, but it's a cute concept with fun spooky atmosphere (maybe it'll play better on PVOD around Halloween?). Just wanted to mention it because it's a foreign-produced family animation and those films have really struggled post-pandemic.

TV spots on primetime / live events, billboards, gimmicky one-time events and the such are probably what drives up the cost.

Your discussion on Twisters' domestic vs international gross made me think that a nice addition to the Worldwide Chart would be a percentage breakdown between Domestic and Global sales. For a movie that was made in an overseas market (China/India etc.) the 'domestic' percentage could be for the country of origin.
Would be cool to understand the global reach of different movies produced in different parts of the world.

Theory on why Twisters didn't do well internationally but did domestically - the U.S. has way more tornados than any other country (1200 per year). Canada is #2 at 100 per year. The rest of the world has 200-300 per year. It's just not a danger that other countries worry or care about.

Alien making the summer top 10 actually doesn’t help you, as it would mean Garfield dropgping out, and although it’s close I don’t think Garfield has a chance of passing Fall Guy in the last second. Unless it was paired at drive-ins with Despicable Me? Not sure how that works.

I've lived in Europe for the last 15 years or so. I have fond memories of Twister from when I was a kid but I have to be honest I was at best luke warm on seeing Twisters. Then I saw one of my friends back in the states who has pretty good taste in movies had seen it twice. Figured maybe it was worth checking out. I asked my friend here if he was interested in going and he had just zero interest in Twisters. He hadn't seen the original and everything he knew about it was the worst or most silly aspects, it's clear the impression he had of it was not good. Numbers seem to suggest he's not alone over here.

And here we are in week 2 of Deadpool and Wolverine, and look at that a couple of really good movies and the box office is roaring back. With several potential big hitters still on the way, so I'll say once again that the main cause for the first half's struggles was alot of movies getting pushed out of 2024 because of the strikes. If the CEO's had acted like grown adults last year and paid their people what they deserved the first half of the year would've looked alot better. Hopefully they've learned their lesson now because alot of the summer movies could've been pushed out of the year if things did'nt end when they did. 2025 has the potential to be a good year for movies it is stacked with big contenders even January has a Dreamworks movie parked at the end of it that I really want to see.

Looking at the Road to Recovery chart this week, do you think this year is starting to look like a more traditional, pre-MCU year? I was noticing how little the box office spikes in the summer for 2015-2019 relative to spring and winter, and wondering how much the pattern the spread of box office receipts over the year was different further back in time. Do you think you can do a segment in a future episode comparing a road to recovery style chart across many different years?

Dan it would be interesting to track Inside Out domestic against Jurassic World as its a tight race to see if itll land top 10 domestic with a chart. You can also track it against Barbie but honestly by next weeks show i think itll have passed Barbir already or be close to it so itll be less interesting beyond just analyzing the strength of the release window.
That and a Lion King vs Inside Out global track chart as it comes up against its final potential two milestones both domestic and global.

I'm not surprised Twisters is weak internationally. Most of the world is less affected by tornados, they are fairly rare. The American focus possibly didn't help, but there are plenty of examples of movies like that still working.

Runaway Bride, Deep Blue Sea, The Haunting, Inspector Gadget - man, what a parade of mediocrity. I know that 1999 seems to have been anointed as the Best Movie Year Ever, but the Box Office History selection this week shows that 1999 still had it's fair share of disposable blah just like any other year.

I forgot that Blair Witch actually came out in the summer. I watched it as part of a test audience in the fall of 1998 in college right around Halloween! With basically NO set up, No Internet buzz, No advertising, No intro, No previews, No info what so ever, and being one of the first "found footage" movies EVER, it scared the living SHIT out of us. We basically left the theater thinking that was an actual documentary and had to sign NDAs. Talk about a movie experience that hits different.

Went more the indy route. Caught the 2024 vers of 'A Place Called Silence'. A bit over written and dragged at the end, but still a good film. Was definitely not what I was expecting. Then Trap which thanks to bad reviews allowed me to lower my expectations. I enjoyed it more than expected. It did feel like a real 'Parent Trap'. Also caught Kneecap, easily the best of the three. It had some fantastic scenes and great cinematography.
