    “How to judge the movie?”
    I judge it by the fact that 3/4 through the movie I realised that my cheeks were hurting because I have been smiling for the past hour and a half, and when I left the theatre I realised that I’d just had the most amount of fun I’d had in a cinema for years!
    I’m glad no one else from the X Men was in it…because it’s not an X Men movie. What would they have added? Nothing more than what we had.

    • @ot7biasedmashups
      @ot7biasedmashups 2 месяца назад +11

      Exactly, I 100% second this. I think it's just so stupid to talk about "serious flaws" in this movie. Like... It's not that deep. I had a ton of fun and so did the other people in the theater I went to. I could barely stop smiling.

    • @davidjsanders76
      @davidjsanders76 2 месяца назад +8

      There was no way to add the X-Men without "saving" them at the end or letting them go, which would have undercut the whole Wolverine arc. Laura was the right choice. She is the future and the X-Men are the past. This way Laura regains her lost father and Wolverine has a reason to keep going.

      Yeah those Singer takes really undermine the premise and motivations of this movie. It's weird how someone who is a movie critic can't see how the movie he is describing is not only a completely different movie in both theme and tone, but also (to me) subjectively worse.

    I must have went to a pre-screening with all obsessive Marvel fans because there was not a single moment that we all didn't have a reaction. Electra came out, we cheered, Gambit walked out and we laughed and yelled out, Blade came out and we lost our damn minds. Is this movie for everyone? No, this is a specific type of movie for a specific type of audience. Does that make it bad or weaker? In my opinion, No. I'm tired of movies that are watered down in order to TRY to appeal to "everyone."

      Same. I live in a super old conservative town. Like, super old. Ha. Sarasota county. But even my theater had cheers and eruptions non stop. And most of the people in my theater were wearing MAGA gear and a general age of 50 or so it appeared.

      I agree, this movie was made for people who know all the characters and whatnot. But more than that, I feel like this movie is for people who were there as the X-men movies (and later MCU) were releasing . There’s a shared knowledge, love, nostalgia, and understanding of how they pushed filmmaking techniques and super hero narrative (or fall short).
      This movie was for me, and it was awesome.
      My wife though, while I think she’ll appreciate a lot of the jokes for joke sake, she won’t get any of the nostalgia, the big hits that made this movie special. It will not be as good to her as it is to me because she just wasn’t there for it all

    Can’t disagree with Matt any more. A lot of my buddies at work are casual marvel fans. One even said he only watches the main movies, no Disney plus shows, doesn’t read or know much about comics and said Deadpool and Wolverine was a 10/10. Matt makes a few decent points, but for me is kind of a buzz kill trying to take a movie too seriously when that movie itself doesn’t take itself very seriously.

    I liked the more subtle references in the film. Like how the ending with Logan and Laura at Wade's party is a callback to the dinner scene in Logan where it's the first time you see everyone being happy, and Charles tells Logan that this is what it's like to be a part of a family. And in a way, they're fulfilling Xavier's dream with Logan and Laura finding a family.

    Channing Tatum wasn't there for the fans of X-Men or the MCU. His dream character was Gambit as Reynold's dream was Deadpool. I suspect this was discussed while they filmed Free Guy. It was a favor. The theater at 3pm may have had no reaction to him, but mine did at 7. Elektra had a bit of cheer, Snipes came on and there was more of a Whoa! then cheers but Gambit walking on made my theater explode. Maybe they all watched X-Men 97 or maybe we were just older and knew the story behind Disney screwing over his movie.

    My daughter in law watched this movie with her husband and myself last night. She likes a lot of anime so she’s not entirely outside of nerdy culture. She has not watched MCU movies but is aware of some character/things about them. She is largely a blank slate for the MCU and has had little interest in catching up to the rest of us.
    She watched Deadpool and Deadpool 2 this week to be ready for the new movie. Loved both of them. And after thoroughly enjoying Deadpool & Wolverine, she actually WANTS to watch the MCU movies. She wants to know more. She wasn’t entirely lost by any references and only required one sentence to get caught up whenever there was a question.
    This movie was the gateway drug to the MCU for her. Perfect movie? No. I get a lot of the criticisms and understand where they are coming from. But I have to say it is one of my absolute favorite Marvel movies to date. I had a blast and cannot wait to watch it again.

      Seriously, thought the same thing. Like you don't have to have something grand happen or this huge development and change for something to be entertaining. But Deadpool is a Fox Marvel misfit... like Blade, Elektra, Johnny Storm and Channing's almost-Gambit. It's not about the X-Men (who were loved, for the most part), specifically, its about the others... the ones that wanted to matter (like Deadpool's arc in this movie) but in some cases never did. Hell, you're proving Ryan's (EDIT: Reynolds, to be clear) point... by still only talking about the flippin' X-Men. And Wolverine (and X-23, and various others like Pyro) was there, and important 🤪

    The movie was clearly a love letter to the Fox moves, yes. But also the franchises that never got any love. The X-Men movies are mostly beloved so we really didn’t need another scene with Wolverine and Professor X because they’ve had scenes together since 2000.

My mom has watched some Marvel movies but not recently and she probably made zero connections of that nature, other than maybe recognizing Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. She still laughed a lot and enjoyed the movie overall. My sister loves Marvel, we actually did an X-Men marathon in preparation, so she probably got all the references to the other Marvel movies, but a lot of the real life references went over her head (like Hugh Jackman's divorce and the fact that Channing Tatum fought so hard to play Gambit and finally got the chance). She still loved the movie and had a great time with it. It's okay if not everything lands for everyone, some things are meant for a smaller group of people. Why is is a bad thing that Marvel is rewarding the people who are most passionate about their product? The argument is that it comes at the detriment of pleasing a broader audience and making new fans, but that argument falls apart when you look at the numbers the movie is doing at the box office and the overall reaction from those who've watched it. The argument that this movie doesn't work with casual audiences is stupid, because the evidence supports the opposite. The people criticizing the movie are not casuals, it's actually people who get all the references but wanted something different or more from the movie. Which fair enough, but don't hide behind the casuals, they loved the movie.

  • @Chris_Myers.

    The entire point of every single character in the movie was that they were characters whose time in the sun got cut short. (Including comic-accurate Deadpool and Wolverine!)
    It is insane to me how out of touch Matt’s take is on this. It honestly exemplifies everything wrong with the movie critic industry and just how useless the entire industry currently is to moviegoers. They are essentially just reviewing movies for other movie critics, because that is the only audience that shares their perspective, which is completely divorced from literally everybody watching the movie as intended by the filmmakers.
    Thank you Colton for representing the actual audience (98% on Rotten Tomatoes) against the critic faulting the movie for not being made for movie critics specifically (78% on RT).
    Also, if we saw Vanessa break up with Wade at the start of the movie then it would have felt completely ridiculous for them to get back together the very next day at the end of the movie! It was shown in flashback because it happened a long time ago, and it wouldn’t _feel_ like a long time to the audience if they just showed that scene and did a “X time later” smash cut.

    It had a lot of cool moments bringing back old characters but at the same time they felt more like caricatures that weren’t treated with respect instead of the characters we remember. The part I don’t like about it is that it establishes every movie universe from the past to have been destroyed and non of them got a happy ending. It’s a funny movie but with most characters it feels more like it brings them back to taint their memory instead of honouring it.

    To the last point in the video - Marvel needs both quality origin stories and quality momentum stories circulating. Original stories to draw in new audiences who don’t need previous movie knowledge + Momentum stories to keep active fans engaged. The last quality origin story I’m remembering is Shang Chi.
    The MCU has been at this for almost 20 years. At some point you just need to know what’s going on or accept that you’ll lack understanding in certain moments. Marvel hasn’t done the best job introducing characters and seamlessly adding them to the momentum of the grander plot

    The movie was FUN. You will be at the edge of your seat thinking and anticipation "who" you you see next. Yet, once you get out of theater, you will suddenly realize that even Marvel got tangled in the "Multiverse" and "Time Travel." And they did it in the very 1st scene. Logan's death happened in 2029. Yet, he was already buried there in 2018.

      If you think about all the events are happening at all times... Logan's death the in Deadpool earth-10005 universe is an anchor event that the entire universe might be unravelling at all points of time. But it does bring the question now that Deadpool and wolverine saved the universe it could become a branched time-line .
      Or another explanation might be in the Deadpool prime universe Logan's death might have happened at least 5 years before it happened in the Fox universe. We might just have to wait and see. Still this movie is MCU's definite back to form.

    If you look at the TVA as modern television, it’s the company trying to see which stories/ characters work and which don’t. The characters who don’t test well are sent to the “void” or the trash can in the writers room. If you look at the scenes in Deadpool Paradox is basically telling Deadpool that if he lets his timeline die. (forget about the company that first had the X-men and join Disney/ the marvel universe) Then he will be an Avenger/ be in the marvel universe fully. The anchor beings are the character that made the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that also paved the way for the for other character to have movies come out. Just my opinion on why the TVA is mentioned and why they bring up Fox so much it kind of makes sense.
