Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy Break Down Every Cameo & Spoiler in Deadpool and Wolverine

  • Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine
    As Deadpool & Wolverine continue their ascent at the box office, Collider's Steve Weintraub had the opportunity to chat with Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy for an interview Reynolds calls "the spoiler one where you're supposed to just get the chance to open up the robe completely, and I show you stuff." This gave us the chance to ask some of our most burning questions after the credits (and post-credits scene) rolled. Now, we've got the answers all in one place.
    Deadpool's third film officially introduced him to Kevin Feige's MCU, as well as Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, bringing this duo together onscreen again at long last. For a bromance this epic and long-anticipated, fans already knew the movie would pack a punch or two, but Reynolds and Levy brought a whole multiverse of legacy characters, variants, and special surprises that brought even Reynolds to tears. While he may not know who Earth-616's anchor being is, Reynolds does admit Jackman is his in real life and discusses working with the Deadpool & Wolverine crew, his gratitude for the overwhelming response of the movie, and honoring a time when actors like Hugh Jackman and himself made a name for themselves.
    During the interview, which you can read below, Reynolds and Levy discuss their process before and during production when perfecting this story. They discuss honoring legacy characters who "never got a third act," like Wesley Snipes as Blade, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, and Channing Tatum's Gambit movie that was ultimately lost to the "bygone era" of 20th Century Fox. They talk about filming the action sequences between Deadpool and Wolverine, the rumored Taylor Swift appearance, Henry Cavill's cameo, bringing back Chris Evans with the promise of an R-rated Marvel moment, and so much more.

    Yeah, the real hero of this movie was the focus puller of that long slowmo shot of Dogpool running towards the camera on a telephoto lens. I've seen this movie in theaters 3 times, and each time I marvel at this shot.
    For those of you who don't know how hard that shit is to pull, these long lenses have a super shallow depth of field (zone of focus, basically, where anything in it is sharp and everything in front of it or behind it gets blurry, the famous bokeh), and manually keeping a moving subject in focus is incredibly hard with it, and it's a SLOWMO SHOT ! So it was shot at about 100+ frames per seconds. Which means if the focus puller screws his focus for even a tiny 1/100th of a second, his screwup will last a whole second on the big screen. Screw up for 2/100th of a second, and you screwup shows for 2 seconds on the big screen, screw up for 4/100th of a second, and you screwup shows for 4 seconds on the big screen... etc...
    And the shot was about 10 seconds long !
    Now add to it that this dog is about 4 nanometers wide and is running towards the camera at about 88mph, and you'll realize just how miraculous this shot is.
    F**k Wolverine and f**k Deadpool, here comes FocusPool !
    This dude is the true unsung hero of the film. He must have got (or at least deserved) the biggest pay of them all.

    • @BricksByBradyn
      @BricksByBradyn Месяц назад +8

      I appreciate this comment. I’m not a “camera” guy or know really anything about film making, or basic videography. I was blown away by a few different scenes by the camera work and/or edits. I wouldn’t have ever noticed the work required for the Dogpool shot if not for this comment. Every little detail about this movie gets better and better!

    • @jjstarrprod
      @jjstarrprod Месяц назад +4

      @@BricksByBradyn well, after a quick reread of my own comment, I realize I screwed up with the framerate translated into seconds. Films are usually shot (and screened) at 24fps. Let's say the slowmo was shot as 240fps, if the focus puller screwed up for one second, it's be times 10, so 10 seconds of screwup on the big screen. So not as ridiculous as my previous (wrong) calculation, but still quite a feat to have managed to make it look seamless. Especially on a dog, which is an animal, and we all know animals on film sets are f"*king divas and don't care a lick about budget or sun light ^^. If you missed your shot, you missed your shot. Good luck having your dog reset in initial position and do the exact same take.

    That was a treat. I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably keep saying it, but Deadpool Wolverine brought me so much joy. I laughed, I got misty eyed, I wanted to yell “yeah! “ at the screen more than once.
    Truly, a passion project and a work of love. I don’t know what else to say but of course I absolutely loved this movie. I started reading comic books in the 1960s, became a fanboy in the mid 70s, and had my own comic book and collectibles business for almost 20 years. Younger fans are so lucky to have always had these movies. They take it for granted. In 1980 we kept wondering when the Silver Surfer movie was going to come out. We had a long wait until the Fantastic Four movie with the Silver Surfer. Anyway, I guess I wasn’t finished. Can’t wait to see what Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman do next.

      It honestly reminded me more of the old Ninja Turtles or even X-Men arcade beat'em up games from the late 80's/early 90's.
      The concept was amazing, although the execution was a bit lacking (the Wolverine pushing the whole gang up felt very cartoony, and don't get me started on that PS3 splashscreen at the end, with Logan looking like a MVC3 "select your character" animation).

    To really get that feeling surging through your veins and that almost immediately tightens your throat and wells your eyes up with big watery tears - there's nothing quite like that in the world. To feel that thrilling validation to even be part of a moment like that which - will hopefully inspire future generations who see it to make something amazing as well, it's the ultimate reward and push to continue. I was the first person in my early Thursday release night showing of DvW who applauded Wesley Snipes appearance. I had no idea and it was my most surprising moment in the story of the film. Snipes Is responsible for so much that has elapsed, maximum effortlessly.

    On the discussion on opening title sequences among the 3 Deadpool movies, all were great but I’m not sure there will be a Deadpool with a title sequence better than Deadpool 2. Vanessa just got shot.. deep music hits… Wade pulls himself and the guy into the way of a truck, and then a slow Celine Dion ballad that hits with the James Bond and other movies being referenced in the intro. I loved that intro the most.

    The one and only thing I am upset about is the absence of acknowledgment for Darrin Henson, the CHOREOGRAPHER of the “byebyebye” dance. Ryan acknowledges Dancepool and NSYNC, but not the actual creator? That’s just crazy to me.

    • @ApoloExpress
      @ApoloExpress 19 дней назад +1

      100% agree on this. Scrolled down to see if someone mentioned that THE DARRIN HENSON choreographed "Bye Bye Bye", not Nick Pauley. Even Pauley has acknowledged and cleared this up on his socials which I'm glad he did bc as a dancer and choreographer himself, he knows ya gotta give credit where credit is due. It confuses me bc what do people think *NSYNC was dancing to in their 2000 music video and concerts---Pauley's choreo @ 5 years old?, or *NSYNC made the choreo up? Doesn't make sense 🤦‍♀🤦‍♀hahaha Henson is one of the best, "Sometimes" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy" (Britney), "Give It To You" (Jordan Knight), "Bye Bye Bye", and those are the ones I just remember....so yes, Pauley just danced it--HENSON created it. I recommend these music videos to everyone to see his superb talent ☺☺ (I believe he also did "Tearin' Up My Heart" and "I Want You Back" but i gotta fact-check lol) (@nomad_wm you most likely know all this 😏) Great interview, can't wait to see the entire Dancepool edit!

    “His eyes say fuckie fuckie “ is a reference to Pretty Woman’s Richard Gere line in Officer and A Gentleman. “ I can’t read” is quoting Peter Sellers in Being There, whom Reynolds said was an inspiration for his Free Guy character.
