My father and I had many issues over the years, culminating in 10 years of zero communication. A nephew of mine persuaded us both to make video contact on Christmas day... 6 months later my father passed away, and I wasn't able to attend his funeral due to covid. We resolved nothing on our chat, and it was awkward as hell, but I'm glad we started a little healing in the living years. If you're in a similar situation... compromise... make the 1st move... find a way.

I'm so sorry for your loss but I'm glad you had a good relationship with him. I lost my Dad sux months ago to dementia and was at his bedside when he died. We had a good relationship with just minor issues. One thing that really helped me was writing a letter to him after he passed; I put all my emotions, good and bad, into it and thanked him for all he had done. I sealed it in an envelope and had the funeral home put it in his casket. I did the same thing when my Mom passed away. I sobbed while writing each letter but felt such relief after. You might want to put all your thoughts about your Dad on paper. It might help. Best wishes.

He is one of my favorite, favorite vocalists and it’s like no one else has heard of him. He’s from the UK, has been around since the ‘70s and has a great solo career, too. He’s mostly R&B, Soul, Funk, Blues, and Pop, but the man can sing the phone book if he wants to and I’ll listen to him. I really really wish someone would react to some of his songs… your ears will thank you.

I called him at the hospital the night before he died and I told him I would see him in the morning. He passed away before I arrived. He never saw the birth of my sons and when my second son was born, I felt a strong presence of my father. So the line that says "I wasn't there that morning when my father passed away....... I'm sure I heard his echo in my newborn's tears...." gets me everytime. We did not have a combative relationship, but I was too young to see the gravity of his situation and I regret not talking to him about it when I could

The reason great music is universal and brings people together is that great songs reflect the human condition. Doesn't matter where you come from. I'm a 55 year old husband, father, small business owner. And I very much enjoy watching you two young people from Texas (I think). Music did that, or was at least the genesis of it. There are things we all experience that help us relate to one another. Writing great lyrics is not easy to do. Some great songs are stories about experiences. Some, a great many, are about love and relationships. Very few are about mortality. This song is so powerful. It makes you want to pick up the phone and call your parents, siblings, friends you haven't spoken with in a while. It encourages you to set aside the petty disagreements, to engage, to share......cause you never know what tomorrow brings.

But my dad was very closed off, and I could never get him to to have a heart to heart talk about anything. So when he passed away, we had so many unresolved issues that will now never be cleared up because of both of our stubbornness. Mike is the lead guitarist there and he was a member of Genesis, you may recognize his from that. He wrote the song, another great songwriter like his buddy Phil Collins who had started his solo career at the same time.

Mike and the Mechanics was a fairly short-lived group, but the hits they had were very memorable. None bigger than this. Lead singer Paul Carrack was also the lead singer for a couple of other short-lived groups, including 1970s band "Ace," best remembered for their 1975 hit single "How Long (Has This Been Goin' On?)." ruclips.net/video/Vo_GMMLULXw/видео.html And the early '80s band Squeeze, which had a great little song called "Tempted." ruclips.net/video/bm3fYvXkAT8/видео.html Paul Carrack sang lead on all of those. A very distinctive voice. Incidentally, another member of that '80s band Squeeze was a keyboardist named Jools Holland, who went on to host a music show on the BBC, which had just about everybody who's anybody guest on the show. Jools is one of the greatest boogie-woogie pianists in the world. Never is it more apparent than in this video with his rock 'n roll swing band performing the 1940s classic, "Bumble Boogie." You GOTTA listen to this! ruclips.net/video/_A1VAsl_4TY/видео.html

Mike Rutherford and B.A Robertson wrote this song. It's about estrangement between a father and son. Mike's father was an officer in the Royal Navy and Mike was an advocate of peace. They were torn apart by their different beliefs and his father died before they could heal the rift.

We are doing this on the fly. This is our first time living. Whether things turn out good or bad you did your best at that time. We all learn grow and change. Just be who you have grown into and continue doing your best

So I haven’t heard this song in over 20 years. My father and I are no longer speaking. I had so wine tonight and yes… I’m mad and I’m sad. I was 22 when this came out. I was so blessed with this music in my prime. This is a blessing to so many others to hear this music again. I took it for granted. Thank you for this.

I got a little wild in the mid 80s and wound up in rehab for a month. Before our group sessions they used to play this song to soften us up a bit. It always worked. lol. It was funny to see all these hard street guys tearing up. Classic tune. The 'Mike' in the name is Genesis bass player Mike Rutherford. It was his project. He's in the video playing guitar and I blieve that's he and his son in the graveyard at the end.

I had forgotten about this song. It is one of my fav songs. So moving. So raw. So real. I’m so grateful that I got to reconnect with my dad before he died. He took off when I was teen and treated all us kids with a lot of ugliness that I spent a lot of years in therapy to deal with it. Which would have been fine. But getting to talk to him the four years before he died really helped me learn what true forgiveness meant. He didn’t even have to be truly sorry or even completely change for me to just honestly talk to him about what happened and let it go. I thought I had let go of that anger but there was still some left. And we didn’t see eye to eye about what he did. Snd I finally got to tell him how it effected me. It may not have changed him but saying it out loud to him, not in anger, helped me to let go of a lot. Thanks for reminding me of this beautiful song

You guys are great, and I envy you hearing this for the first time. When I was a kid, this song had such feeling and his voice was so melodic and musical I thought Mike was black. Truth is, music has no color attached. Thanks for playing it; brings back lots of good (and sad) memories. My dad passed many years ago, before I could say lots of things I needed to say. We live, and if we're lucky, we learn and grow. Bless you two.

Those brilliant vocals were supplied by Paul Carrack who has a terrific career. The hit he first had was "How Long" by Ace back in 1975. He had another big hit with the band Squeeze with "Tempted". He had "Living Years" and "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)" with Mike + The Mechanics. Also had a solo hit with "Don't Shed a Tear" back in 1987. Phil Collins once described Carrack as an "incredible voice" who "could sing the telephone directory". In fact, the BBC declared him "The Man with the Golden Voice". His collaborations are a who's who in Rock.

I too love this song. Asia you broke it down, you got the message out that they were saying. Don’t be so Proud that you can’t say “I’m Sorry” or at least “let’s talk about it!”. Life is too short to have Sorrow or carry the anger, angst, anxiety in your heart. Tell those that you love, that matter in your life that you Love them. Mike is the Guitar Player, he is Mike Rutherford from the band “ Genesis” with Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel. The Lead Singer is Paul Carrack he’s been with a few bands including his own “ACE” How Long Has This Been Going On. I’m not as strong as you guys, tears always come to my eyes when I hear this song…. I am almost 70 years old. I learned this lesson many years ago, I tell the people I love, that I love them…..almost every day. I strive to never let a disagreement last very long, and I “allow” people to have a different opinion than mine on anything. We may walk away on opposite sides of an issue, but I always make sure that they know I love them, regardless. This makes for a peaceful, joyful, contented life. I wouldn’t want it any other way.
    Great reaction. Very real.😍

This song resonates with me not because my dad and I were estranged, but because I was on vacation in Hawaii when he passed away. I remember telling him goodbye and would see him when I came back which of course never happened. It's been 32 years, but it seems like yesterday and I still regret I wasn't there. So the last verse of this song always gets to me.
On another note, Paul Carrack is probably best known for the songs "How Long" with the group Ace and "Tempted" with the group Squeeze.
