I was rushed home from Afghanistan to be with my family as my dad was dying. I walked into the house and was rushed into my parents bedroom. Mom made everyone leave and it was just the two of us. He weakly opened his eyes and smiled. He said "I've been waiting for you son.". I smiled with tears flowing. He told me that he was so proud of me and the man and father I had become. We talked about his army career and then he said to call everyone back in. I did as he asked and 20 minutes later he took his last breath. I left my parents house 1 week later back to Afghanistan to finish my deployment. I miss that guy with all my heart. He was my hero.

Thanks, I was thinking this was Genesis related: Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Paul Carrack, some exceptional artists in that group. This is the kind of song, that has you humming for hours after but also has you thinking of the words. I saw the hint of tears with both of you, mine were close behind. I had several family pass in the space of 10 years and I still think of them
I'm a 70+ Scottish man, not given to emotional over-reaction, but I had to swallow really hard to clear numerous lumps in my throat hearing this again. My dad passed away when I was 37, but I still miss him greatly, My biggest regret is that I never made my sons before he passed on he would have loved them, and they would have loved him. I deeply regret that I deprived them of this joy. I was enjoying my life to much to settle down, but I now know that was selfish. There's an old saying that goes" When I was 18, I thought my father a fool: when I was 28, I was amazed how wise he had become in ten short years". I guess I took another ten before I wisened up. It was touching to see the concern you both had for each other reacting to this, but take confort, please, in passing on your love, guidance and wisdom to your passed away parent's grandchildren. That's so sweet. I worry that I won't be able to make my mother and father grandparents, even though that's all they really want. Looks cannot make up for a lack of character, which, when life gets tough, in the long run,is far more important than beauty. Have kids and you will see the world in an entirely different light. I;ve lived through great times and terrible times. With kids, the great times begin with the waves of exaltation that suffuse you when they announce themselves to the world. If you encounter terrible times, the love you have for them will give you the strength to soldier on, and in doing so, you will clearly see how trivial and insignificant many things really are.
I can relate to a lot of what you said. I was 27 when my father passed. My wife and I had problems having children and our first son wasn't born until 15 months later.

I didn't have a great relationship with my father, I was a huge disappointment to him, until my children were born. He thought my kids were the most magnificent creatures to walk the earth, and with that, it brought him and I closer than we had ever been, but the resentment of how he'd treated me throughout my growing years, and my heartbreak from trying to matter more to him, had taken it's toll. He died when my kids were still very young. When I received the call from my sister to tell me had passed, I drove like a demon home. On the way there, this song played on the radio. It still brings me to tears 23 years after his death.
The contrast between the youth choir singing first, representing the song's lead character and the elder choir representing his father's generation is brilliant. The message is timeless and much needed. Sadly, it takes two willing sides to reach agreement and peace. We all need to be reminded of the truths in this song.

My grandfather and I did not agree on lot of things. As a result, we had only had casual and short conversations. The day of his funeral, I went to sit in the car during the feed afterwards (for needed alone time) and this song was playing when I turned on the radio. A punch to the heart...

My mother and father died with only myself by their sides; my 4 siblings didn't care. I just lost my oldest brother and the next oldest left me out of the obituary. Hurt me terribly. I've lost half of my family and the remaining three siblings are miserable, unforgiving people. It's all very sad.

It's so true. My father died suddenly of a heart attack. I was 16. I always wished I could have known him as an adult. Jordan and Amber you are two of the sweetest souls.
I had to gear myself up for watching this reaction. I knew it was going to be bad for me to watch it, and it was. I bawled like a baby. My dad was a hard man. He'd grown up in an abusive household, often beaten by his father (who had been beaten by his own father... this is how it is in some families), and growing up, as the oldest of my siblings, I caught a lot of hell from him. After I became an adult I'd reconciled a great deal with him, but things weren't exactly healthy between us. I sought help to work out my anger over things, and managed to be the father to my own kids that I should have had (and my father should have had, and my grandfather... you get the idea). But for a long while we hardly ever spoke to one another. In his defense, let me say there were good times. My childhood wasn't one long session of horror and trauma. There were good times, and the good times are not diminished by the bad times. I will treasure memories of the good days forever. That said... he was a hard man. Anyway, the time came when he had to be put into a care center. He had dementia, and mom could no longer care for him. By this point, he didn't recognize me or any of my brothers. Anyway, I visited him as often as I could, and I'd just sit there and talk to him. Sometimes I'd bring him ice cream, or those spicy peanuts he seemed addicted to. Anyway, during these visits, he thought that I was his younger brother, my Uncle Charlie. I didn't mind. I let him call me Charlie. He and I he talked things that happened before I was born, or when I was just a kid (I'm in my 60s now), some of his war stories... I must have heard the story of how he and my mom met a dozen times. (And sometimes I'd hear the same story four or five times in a single visit.) Anyway, during one of these visits, out of the blue, I got the urge and sang this song to him. He sat there and watched me sing and never said a word. When I was done we went back to talking things he could remember. Things long past. But as I was going to leave, he said, "Charlie, when you see my boys, you tell them I love them. I know me and the boys had problems, but I don't think I have too long now and I need them to know I love them. And tell them I'm sorry I was hard on them. I shouldn't have done that. I shouldn't have done that to them, like Pop did to you and me. That was wrong. So you tell them for me, Charlie. Okay? And I promised to him I would. That was not the last time I talked to dad. He lived about another two and a half years afterward (and even actually recognized me a time or two during that two and a half years). But that's the time I remember most. The time that I sang for my father, and he said he loved me, and was sorry. I miss that old man every single day, now.

they came to Portland I'm pretty sure in the early 90's and I met some of them outside the venue where they played. After soundcheck, Paul Carrack asked me where there was a bookstore.so I walked there with him and chatted. it was a cool interaction, very likable guy. This song drove me to tears later at the concert. a cool memory.

My father died in May of 1988. This song was released that December. It has always held a special place in my heart. I loved him dearly, but at 17 I expressed it like the teen I was. I honestly thought he would live forever. This song makes me cry every time, even all these years later. The baby's newborn tears part is especially hard. My dad was the most family oriented man I have ever known, and he missed out on knowing my children. They would have loved each other so much.

Amber I feel for you. I lost my mother way to early in 1999 and my father in 2011. I'm still miss them every day but it does get easier. First off you tend to only remember how you felt at the end. Later on you can remember the good times and smile.
My dad died unexpectedly at the age of 50. He had the heart attack that put him in the hospital on my mom's birthday (they'd been divorced for years, so it's not like he had it while we were all at dinner or anything. He had 3 heart attacks in 4 days), and made me realize my own mortality. I'm 48 now, and it's been 20 years since he died. Mom went 6 years ago. My stepmother that same year. Make sure you appreciate them while they're here.
I had a neighbor who was in his late 70s or 80 when his mother passed away and he said something that has always stuck with me. You're never old enough to be an orphan.

Paul Carrack. Lead singer for Mike in the mechanics. Formerly with Ace. Beautiful songwriter. Like your wife's story. My dad was my hero. Greatest man I ever knew. Dad went down with a heart attack. Triple bypass. My wife gracious enough to allow me to move back home with him. Until I could get him back on his feet. I got to be with him for 9 months. A year after that he died. Which I stopped in that year to see him as well. I was blessed with that time. But it still wasn't enough. My parents are greatly missed. That was 17 years ago. And the loss is still felt. But I will see them again. Both were saved. Not that I'm rushing to get there. But we will have eternity to be together.
I never had a Dad that cared, and hearing, if you do have one, do.everything in your power to make sure you reach out to each other, and love each other, cause it’s extremely hard when you can’t! I know that feeling. My parents never cared for me when i was a child, the didn't care for me when I was a young adult. Now in my 50s I'm done caring for them. I don't know how they are doing, if they are healthy or not. I haven't talked to my parents in 4 years and I don't intend to do it anytime soon, because I know they wouldn't care what I tell them. It hurts so much even after all those years, but I'm done being the one reaching out and being belittled and rejected all over again. I guess one day my phone will ring and one of my siblings will tell me that one of them has died and I don't know how I will react when the time comes. I will be there for the funeral, but that's it.
@@althelas sorry to hear this, it is extremely hard to feel anything in that situation. My brother abused me for years, and when he died, I was angry more than anything. Angry that he never admitted it, and that he went out thinking everything was fine.

I am a singer and I am studying Carrack, his approach, his songs. A Brit with a soulful voice, self taught, and I am in awe. He closes his eyes and he has an inner tension in his phrases like a jazz trumpet, very complicated vocal riffs, a lot of variation in his tone and texture (this is why he is so interesting to listen to), especially in, IN THE LIVING YEARS, I bow at his altar.
I listened to this while at work. I had to go stand and look out the window as I cried. For me, It's a little hard for me to ear this song. I'm the youngest of 4 kids. My dad had died about 5 weeks after he turned 50 and 2 weeks before my sweet 16th birthday. And he died after battling cancer for 3 years. I'm 54 years old know and I still think about and miss him. I wish my 13 year old son had the chance to meet him. My dad died in 1983.

lynn, I'm the youngest of 8. My Dad's fight w/ cancer was about a year. He was 63. I spent the 5 months after graduating from college at home, watching him waste away and die. It was in November of 1983. My heart, and my hugs, go out to you.

Such a POWERFUL song. Moves me to tears, despite the hundreds of times I've heard it through the decades. Makes me soon grateful my precious dad and I had no issues ever. He was my true North, my strong and gentle example of what a man should be. He's still the yardstick by which I measure men. Even when he went into a tavern for a beer. lol. He truly was my Hero. I,too, cant get through this without crying openly.As I am now.
I totally agree with you. My father passed almost 3 years ago. I was a daddy’s girl and was fortunate enough to know my father only had a limited amount of time before he passed. We were able to have many conversations about what we meant to one another and how much I loved him and felt blessed and proud to be his daughter. "I need You"(Suburban Voodoo album by Paul Carrack) and "Tempted" (Eastside Story album by Squeeze) are two great bluesy blue-eyed soul songs you may want to check out, even if just on your own. Mike Rutherford, the guy with the little boy, was with the band Genesis. He wrote this after he lost his father. Grab tissues before you listen. It's a truly beautiful and poignant song. I love that when the line "I just wish I could have told him in the living years" Amber was welling up and without even looking, Jay knew, he sensed it. Such a well matched couple. I saw a short time after that the song got to Jay and he just put his fingers up to the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes. It's a very powerful song and I don't think anyone could have delivered it in a better way than Paul Carrack does. Jay and Amber are such a genuinely down to earth couple.. Makes me glad I found RSR
I’m a grown veteran man and this makes me tear up because my dad passed 28 years ago and I never got to tell him everything and be there when he went and that still bothers me. I did get to tell him I loved him
I barely make it through this song without crying, It is so beautiful. I have to say I was very Blessed to have wonderful parents that we showed love right up until they both passed away. I also had the same with my husband and my son. My only regret is that I didn't get to grow old with my husband(he was 49 when he passed away, and my son never got to grow past 31, the last thing I said to my son was I Love You and he said it back. When my dad and I don't see eye to eye and when I listen to this I reminded that my love for him is greater than any feeling. Love the ones close to you before it's too late.
I was there the night before my father passed away. I was the last one of my siblings to see him alive. I was in his room at the nursing facility, and I could hear his labored breathing as he slept. I sat there for about a half hour just looking at him and listening to him breath. I thought about how much I loved him and how he had influenced my life. I said to him right as I left that he needed to go be with Mom, it was time. Little did I know that at 5am I would get a call from my older brother telling me that Dad had passed in the night. I cried as I drove to the facility. My other siblings were there around our fathers body. I looked at him one last time, kissed him on the forehead, said goodbye, and then I left his room. I had listened to this song many times before my father's passing, thinking I needed to tell him so much but did not. I have my regrets, but I was able to say goodbye and see him before he went to be with my mother who had passed away years before. Whenever I hear this song on the radio now I have to turn it off, not because of the memories about my Dad but because of the strong emotions it brings forth.
i had the same exact thing with my mom.....in my arms and she died...the morphine kicked in....i never really told her i loved her...i never told anything...and i hope i will die soon so my family will get some money and i can finally repent my deeds...... i know this wont cheer you up but....it's the way it is

Talk to them, dont leave it, any money you leave wont make amends. " Its too late when you die, to admit you dont see eye to eye ", money wont fix that. Pick up that phone. Make that call. Even if it doesnt work out, you can at least be at peace knowing you tried and can move on.
Yeah.. don't wait. Last thing I said to my sister was a stupid text. "I'll get back to you" 3 days later she passed away with no warning. She was my bestfriend and hero.
This always brings a lump to my throat. So many people will relate to the message in this amazing song, me included. I love how they used an older generation of choir singers in this video, that's so powerful and brings home the message so beautifully. I'll never understand why sometimes it's so hard to open our hearts to the ones we love, but that's sadly true.
By far one of my favorite songs from the 80's. Y'all did great...had me bawling 😢. My two sons lost their father to cancer in Oct. of 2019 then that following Feb I was diagnosed with breast cancer so a lot of deep conversations were had... I can definitely relate. Gosh, this song hits hard. I also wasn't there when my father passed away seven years ago but I did say to him in one of the final times I saw him that he shouldn't worry about me, I had set my goals in life and was going to work my hardest to achieve them. His final words to me were "Son, I have every faith in you."

I remember the name of the band, but couldn’t name a song. This one was beautiful, and I must listen again. It inspired me to do something fun with my Mom tomorrow. As she aging, she’s sharing childhood memories. Learning things about her and the family that I didn’t know.
That's what I'm trying to express to my son now. I don't have 10 or 20 years left to wait for him to understand how important this is! I want him to know stories about my childhood and his. I got the phone call from the hospital to tell me he was dying and rushed straight there unfortunately I arrived 3 minutes after he passed and I never got to say anything I wanted to say to him. I agree this song is so heartfelt and true to life. Don’t let ones you truly love go long at all with a quarrel because you never know when you will see them last & quarrels don’t mean anything when there’s love. I've heard this song so many times and it still hits me hard and brings tears to my eyes. Twenty-two years after my dad passed I still have sadness about the things I wished I would have said to him. Life is so short - we need to value all those who lovingly touch our lives.

I was only 25 at the time this song came out but didn't hear this song until 1987 when my father passed away. My son was born just 3 months after he died. This song transcends generation after generation and just reminds us that life is really short. Whatever issues and problems we have it's always better to resolve them before our loved one's pass on. DO not ever live with regrets and wait till it's too late to reconcile and rekindle that relationship. While in the living years let's thank God for our parents and loved ones and pick up that phone and call them before it's too late.

It means so much more to me now that I've had both of my parents pass away in the past 5 years. If you still have your parents around be sure to spend time with them. When they are gone you will miss so many things you would take for granted.
This song always brings me to tears. It reminds me of my dad so much. He and i had a wonderful relationship. I wasn't there when he died. We were 1000 miles away. I miss him so much!
I recall hearing this song shortly after my father died and it hit me very hard. I wanted my dad's love so much but he just wasn't able to do that for me. So I felt a lot of pain knowing the living years were no more. Oh boy.

My dad passed on my birthday in 2014. US Navy WW2 and Korea, career commercial sailor and HVAC man. Smoked and drank every day of his life. Kicked cancer in the ass, and finally decided to call it when he was 87. Rest easy Pop.
My dad and I "got it worked out" before he passed in 1991. It was wide gulf but with Divine Guidance, we came to an understanding. I'm thankful we "got it done." I sat next to him when he drew his last breath and I led our family members in prayer. It may have been the most meaningful moment in my life. With my Mom, she passed in 2016 at age 96. Everything that needed to be said was said, everything that needed to be done was done. She told me "no tears. I've had a beautiful life, married to the same man for 50 years, have two great sons, and got to do pretty much everything I wanted to do." She had a good run.

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. My dad was absent from my life from age 14 to 20. At 20 years old, I was busy with college and then working and getting my career on track. I only saw or spoke to him a few times a year. He was having serious health issues in the summer of 2002 and I spent more time with him during that period. I would sometimes stop to see him on my way home from work. I was going to stop one particular Friday, but I had a bad cold, I was tired and I didn't want to risk making him sick too. He had a fatal heart attack two days later and he was gone before I got to the hospital. I often wonder if I had stopped that day, if he would have lived longer. I have always been grateful for the time we spent together that summer. I encourage everyone to make the effort to reconnect before it's to late. Blessings to all. ❤
Paul Carrack is the singer - great UK bluesy singer.. “Tempted” was a huge hit. It is about a son who doesn’t tell his Dad how he feels until it is too late.

I was rushed home from Afghanistan to be with my family as my dad was dying. I walked into the house and was rushed into my parents bedroom. Mom made everyone leave and it was just the two of us. He weakly opened his eyes and smiled. He said "I've been waiting for you son.". I smiled with tears flowing. He told me that he was so proud of me and the man and father I had become. We talked about his army career and then he said to call everyone back in. I did as he asked and 20 minutes later he took his last breath. I left my parents house 1 week later back to Afghanistan to finish my deployment. I miss that guy with all my heart. He was my hero.

I'm a 70+ Scottish man, not given to emotional over-reaction, but I had to swallow really hard to clear numerous lumps in my throat hearing this again.

My biggest regret is that I never made my sons before he passed on he would have loved them, and they would have loved him.
I deeply regret that I deprived them of this joy.
I was enjoying my life to much to settle down, but I now know that was selfish.

I guess I took another ten before I wisened up.

Stop obsessing about how others think of how you look,there's nothing wrong with them. Looks cannot make up for a lack of character, which, when life gets tough, in the long run,is far more important than beauty.
Have kids and you will see the world in an entirely different light.
I;ve lived through great times and terrible times. With kids, the great times begin with the waves of exaltation that suffuse you when they announce themselves to the world.
If you encounter terrible times, the love you have for them will give you the strength to soldier on, and in doing so, you will clearly see how trivial and insignificant many things really are.
I can relate to a lot of what you said. I was 27 when my father passed. My wife and I had problems having children and our first son wasn't born until 15 months later.

You just made ME cry. I miss my dad and mom excruciatingly every day. I am 54 (my dad passed in 07; my mom in 05) and they were my best friends! Please take care of yourself.
I didn't have a great relationship with my father, I was a huge disappointment to him, until my children were born. He thought my kids were the most magnificent creatures to walk the earth, and with that, it brought him and I closer than we had ever been, but the resentment of how he'd treated me throughout my growing years, and my heartbreak from trying to matter more to him, had taken it's toll. He died when my kids were still very young. When I received the call from my sister to tell me had passed, I drove like a demon home. On the way there, this song played on the radio. It still brings me to tears 23 years after his death.

My mother and father died with only myself by their sides; my 4 siblings didn't care. I just lost my oldest brother and the next oldest left me out of the obituary. Hurt me terribly. I've lost half of my family and the remaining three siblings are miserable, unforgiving people. It's all very sad.

It's so true. My father died suddenly of a heart attack. I was 16. I always wished I could have known him as an adult. Jordan and Amber you are two of the sweetest souls.
I had to gear myself up for watching this reaction. I knew it was going to be bad for me to watch it, and it was. I bawled like a baby.
My dad was a hard man. He'd grown up in an abusive household, often beaten by his father (who had been beaten by his own father... this is how it is in some families), and growing up, as the oldest of my siblings, I caught a lot of hell from him. After I became an adult I'd reconciled a great deal with him, but things weren't exactly healthy between us. I sought help to work out my anger over things, and managed to be the father to my own kids that I should have had (and my father should have had, and my grandfather... you get the idea). But for a long while we hardly ever spoke to one another.
In his defense, let me say there were good times. My childhood wasn't one long session of horror and trauma. There were good times, and the good times are not diminished by the bad times. I will treasure memories of the good days forever. That said... he was a hard man.
Anyway, the time came when he had to be put into a care center. He had dementia, and mom could no longer care for him. By this point, he didn't recognize me or any of my brothers.
Anyway, I visited him as often as I could, and I'd just sit there and talk to him. Sometimes I'd bring him ice cream, or those spicy peanuts he seemed addicted to. Anyway, during these visits, he thought that I was his younger brother, my Uncle Charlie. I didn't mind. I let him call me Charlie. He and I he talked things that happened before I was born, or when I was just a kid (I'm in my 60s now), some of his war stories... I must have heard the story of how he and my mom met a dozen times. (And sometimes I'd hear the same story four or five times in a single visit.)
Anyway, during one of these visits, out of the blue, I got the urge and sang this song to him. He sat there and watched me sing and never said a word. When I was done we went back to talking things he could remember. Things long past. But as I was going to leave, he said, "Charlie, when you see my boys, you tell them I love them. I know me and the boys had problems, but I don't think I have too long now and I need them to know I love them. And tell them I'm sorry I was hard on them. I shouldn't have done that. I shouldn't have done that to them, like Pop did to you and me. That was wrong. So you tell them for me, Charlie. Okay?
And I promised to him I would.
That was not the last time I talked to dad. He lived about another two and a half years afterward (and even actually recognized me a time or two during that two and a half years). But that's the time I remember most. The time that I sang for my father, and he said he loved me, and was sorry. I miss that old man every single day, now.

they came to Portland I'm pretty sure in the early 90's and I met some of them outside the venue where they played. After soundcheck, Paul Carrack asked me where there was a bookstore.so I walked there with him and chatted. it was a cool interaction, very likable guy. This song drove me to tears later at the concert.

My father died in May of 1988. This song was released that December. It has always held a special place in my heart. I loved him dearly, but at 17 I expressed it like the teen I was. I honestly thought he would live forever. This song makes me cry every time, even all these years later. The baby's newborn tears part is especially hard. My dad was the most family oriented man I have ever known, and he missed out on knowing my children. They would have loved each other so much.

Amber I feel for you. I lost my mother way to early in 1999 and my father in 2011.
I'm still miss them every day but it does get easier. First off you tend to only remember how you felt at the end. Later on you can remember the good times and smile.

Genesis is actually touring beginning this year. Mike is still in as Phil Collins and of course Tony Banks. Phil Collins son, Nicholas, will be playing drums and the touring member Daryl Stuermer on bass and guitar.
Silent Running is a good one, I have seen it used in some ads for helping people who are victims of trafficking

Dad went down with a heart attack. Triple bypass.
My wife gracious enough to allow me to move back home with him. Until I could get him back on his feet.
I got to be with him for 9 months. A year after that he died. Which I stopped in that year to see him as well.
I was blessed with that time. But it still wasn't enough. My parents are greatly missed. That was 17 years ago. And the loss is still felt. But I will see them again. Both were saved. Not that I'm rushing to get there. But we will have eternity to be together.

I know that feeling. My parents never cared for me when i was a child, the didn't care for me when I was a young adult. Now in my 50s I'm done caring for them. I don't know how they are doing, if they are healthy or not. I haven't talked to my parents in 4 years and I don't intend to do it anytime soon, because I know they wouldn't care what I tell them. It hurts so much even after all those years, but I'm done being the one reaching out and being belittled and rejected all over again. I guess one day my phone will ring and one of my siblings will tell me that one of them has died and I don't know how I will react when the time comes. I will be there for the funeral, but that's it.

I am a singer and I am studying Carrack, his approach, his songs. A Brit with a soulful voice, self taught, and I am in awe. He closes his eyes and he has an inner tension in his phrases like a jazz trumpet, very complicated vocal riffs, a lot of variation in his tone and texture (this is why he is so interesting to listen to), especially in, IN THE LIVING YEARS, I bow at his altar.
I listened to this while at work. I had to go stand and look out the window as I cried. My dad passed away in 1997 a few months after I got married and didn't have a chance to enjoy time with his grandsons, nor could he and I mend our relationship. Thanks for your review. For me, It's a little hard for me to ear this song. I'm the youngest of 4 kids. My dad had died about 5 weeks after he turned 50 and 2 weeks before my sweet 16th birthday. And he died after battling cancer for 3 years. I'm 54 years old know and I still think about and miss him. I wish my 13 year old son had the chance to meet him. My dad died in 1983.
I'm the same age as you, and lost my dad just 2 months ago. I'm so grateful for all the wonderful years I had with him, and I am so sorry you lost yours so young. No matter what age you are, it is devestating to lose a good dad.

lynn, I'm the youngest of 8. My Dad's fight w/ cancer was about a year. He was 63. I spent the 5 months after graduating from college at home, watching him waste away and die.
It was in November of 1983.

Such a POWERFUL song. Moves me to tears, despite the hundreds of times I've heard it through the decades. Makes me soon grateful my precious dad and I had no issues ever. He was my true North, my strong and gentle example of what a man should be. He's still the yardstick by which I measure men. I still thank God daily for him in my life and I miss him more than I can say.

I totally agree with you. My father passed almost 3 years ago. I was a daddy’s girl and was fortunate enough to know my father only had a limited amount of time before he passed. We were able to have many conversations about what we meant to one another and how much I loved him and felt blessed and proud to be his daughter. "I need You"(Suburban Voodoo album by Paul Carrack) and "Tempted" (Eastside Story album by Squeeze) are two great bluesy blue-eyed soul songs you may want to check out, even if just on your own. Mike Rutherford, the guy with the little boy, was with the band Genesis. He wrote this after he lost his father. Grab tissues before you listen. It's a truly beautiful and poignant song. I love that when the line "I just wish I could have told him in the living years" Amber was welling up and without even looking, Jay knew, he sensed it. Such a well matched couple. I saw a short time after that the song got to Jay and he just put his fingers up to the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes. It's a very powerful song and I don't think anyone could have delivered it in a better way than Paul Carrack does. Jay and Amber are such a genuinely down to earth couple.. Makes me glad I found RSR
This was released the year my father died of cancer, I was 16. Even now it still makes me cry every time.
I’m a grown veteran man and this makes me tear up because my dad passed 28 years ago and I never got to tell him everything and be there when he went and that still bothers me. I did get to tell him I loved him
I barely make it through this song without crying, It is so beautiful. I have to say I was very Blessed to have wonderful parents that we showed love right up until they both passed away. I also had the same with my husband and my son. My only regret is that I didn't get to grow old with my husband(he was 49 when he passed away, and my son never got to grow past 31, the last thing I said to my son was I Love You and he said it back. When my dad and I don't see eye to eye and when I listen to this I reminded that my love for him is greater than any feeling. Love the ones close to you before it's too late.
I was there the night before my father passed away. I was the last one of my siblings to see him alive. I was in his room at the nursing facility, and I could hear his labored breathing as he slept. I sat there for about a half hour just looking at him and listening to him breath. I thought about how much I loved him and how he had influenced my life. I said to him right as I left that he needed to go be with Mom, it was time. Little did I know that at 5am I would get a call from my older brother telling me that Dad had passed in the night. I cried as I drove to the facility. My other siblings were there around our fathers body. I looked at him one last time, kissed him on the forehead, said goodbye, and then I left his room.
I had listened to this song many times before my father's passing, thinking I needed to tell him so much but did not. I have my regrets, but I was able to say goodbye and see him before he went to be with my mother who had passed away years before. Whenever I hear this song on the radio now I have to turn it off, not because of the memories about my Dad but because of the strong emotions it brings forth.
i had the same exact thing with my mom.....in my arms and she died...the morphine kicked in....i never really told her i loved her...i never told anything...and i hope i will die soon so my family will get some money and i can finally repent my deeds...... i know this wont cheer you up but....it's the way it is

Talk to them, dont leave it, any money you leave wont make amends. " Its too late when you die, to admit you dont see eye to eye ", money wont fix that. Pick up that phone. Make that call. Even if it doesnt work out, you can at least be at peace knowing you tried and can move on.

This always brings a lump to my throat. So many people will relate to the message in this amazing song, me included. I love how they used an older generation of choir singers in this video, that's so powerful and brings home the message so beautifully. I'll never understand why sometimes it's so hard to open our hearts to the ones we love, but that's sadly true.
By far one of my favorite songs from the 80's. Y'all did great...had me bawling 😢. My two sons lost their father to cancer in Oct. of 2019 then that following Feb I was diagnosed with breast cancer so a lot of deep conversations were had... I can definitely relate. Y'all are so sweet! I look forward to your reactions daily.

Gosh, this song hits hard. I also wasn't there when my father passed away seven years ago but I did say to him in one of the final times I saw him that he shouldn't worry about me, I had set my goals in life and was going to work my hardest to achieve them. His final words to me were "Son, I have every faith in you."

I remember the name of the band, but couldn’t name a song. This one was beautiful, and I must listen again. It inspired me to do something fun with my Mom tomorrow. As she aging, she’s sharing childhood memories. Learning things about her and the family that I didn’t know.
That's what I'm trying to express to my son now. I don't have 10 or 20 years left to wait for him to understand how important this is! I want him to know stories about my childhood and his. I write to my grands and I've asked my son to date and save them. It might be all my grandson will remember about me. This song makes me cry. So does James Taylor's Shower the people you love.

This song has a new meaning to me, my dad passed away unexpectedly this year. I got the phone call from the hospital to tell me he was dying and rushed straight there unfortunately I arrived 3 minutes after he passed and I never got to say anything I wanted to say to him. Don't leave it too late, I just hope he knew how much I loved him and how proud I was of him.

Don’t let ones you truly love go long at all with a quarrel because you never know when you will see them last & quarrels don’t mean anything when there’s love. The line in the song that just makes my heart, swell and contract because of the line “I’m sure I heard his echo later that same year… I’m sure I saw his spirit in my babies newborn tears” I cry and cry on that, and I didn’t even have a parent or close loved one that passed while we were not getting along. I've heard this song so many times and it still hits me hard and brings tears to my eyes. Twenty-two years after my dad passed I still have sadness about the things I wished I would have said to him. Life is so short - we need to value all those who lovingly touch our lives.
"I'm sure I heard his echo in my baby's new born tears". We carry part of our fathers, as will our grandchildren. How we live our lives matters. We should strive to pass on love & righteousness to our children.

I was only 25 at the time this song came out but didn't hear this song until 1987 when my father passed away. My son was born just 3 months after he died. This song transcends generation after generation and just reminds us that life is really short. Whatever issues and problems we have it's always better to resolve them before our loved one's pass on. DO not ever live with regrets and wait till it's too late to reconcile and rekindle that relationship. While in the living years let's thank God for our parents and loved ones and pick up that phone and call them before it's too late.

I grew up in the 80s and this song is one I've heard hundreds of times... but I haven't heard it in years. I forgot how damn good it was. It means so much more to me now that I've had both of my parents pass away in the past 5 years. If you still have your parents around be sure to spend time with them. When they are gone you will miss so many things you would take for granted.

My dad passed on my birthday in 2014. US Navy WW2 and Korea, career commercial sailor and HVAC man. Smoked and drank every day of his life. Kicked cancer in the ass, and finally decided to call it when he was 87. Rest easy Pop.
My dad and I "got it worked out" before he passed in 1991. It was wide gulf but with Divine Guidance, we came to an understanding. I'm thankful we "got it done." I sat next to him when he drew his last breath and I led our family members in prayer. It may have been the most meaningful moment in my life.
With my Mom, she passed in 2016 at age 96. Everything that needed to be said was said, everything that needed to be done was done. She told me "no tears. I've had a beautiful life, married to the same man for 50 years, have two great sons, and got to do pretty much everything I wanted to do." She had a good run.

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. My dad was absent from my life from age 14 to 20. At 20 years old, I was busy with college and then working and getting my career on track. I only saw or spoke to him a few times a year. He was having serious health issues in the summer of 2002 and I spent more time with him during that period. I would sometimes stop to see him on my way home from work. I was going to stop one particular Friday, but I had a bad cold, I was tired and I didn't want to risk making him sick too. He had a fatal heart attack two days later and he was gone before I got to the hospital. I often wonder if I had stopped that day, if he would have lived longer. I have always been grateful for the time we spent together that summer. I encourage everyone to make the effort to reconnect before it's to late. Blessings to all. ❤
