This touched my husband very deeply, as he was in the Navy and stationed around 10 hours from his home when his father was dying. We arrived at the hospital too late for him to tell his father that he loved him. He found this song a few years later and it meant a lot to him.

Everything I Own by Bread is similar. Everyone thought David Gates was writing about a lost love..."I would give everything I own to have you back again.."...but he was actually writing about his father, who had died...wonderful song, just like this one.

    • @billparrish4385
      @billparrish4385 2 года назад

This song had a tremendous impact on me growing up. The first time I heard _Everything I Own_ was while visiting a cousin in a distant city, soon after her father had passed away, while we were both in our teens. She told me this was a very special song for her, as it reminded her of him. I initially had thought it was a love song, but listening to it with her, I soon realized the lyrics could also work for a parent dying, too. Then later I learned that the songwriter David Gates actually did write it in memory of his own father who had died. My cousin's dad had been fairly well-to-do, and she had been left a sizable trust fund, so the title lyric really hit home for her. Well, all of the lyrics did, really. She would get such a look on her face, eyes distant, expression achingly empty, hugging the album cover, longing.
      Absolutely everything....

Paul Carrack has one of the most underrated voices in rock history. I remember hearing it the first time on a song called, HOW LONG, with his old band Ace in the 7o's. Just enough hint of melancholy to deliver the message without being overly dramatic or pretentious. Soothing as the ocean wave gently reaching the shore. For all the ones we lost and remember.

One of my favorite songs and your reaction was all beautifully stated. Sorry about your dad my heart goes out to you. My relationship with my dad mirrors this song. He was a tough Viet Nam vet and I was a rebellious teen. He passed when I was in my thirties, sufficient time had passed for me to learn to respect all he did for us - all of us. I was at his bedside shortly before he died, shared some thoughts as he lay in a coma. I wasn’t sure if he heard them, but when I looked up I noticed the hospital staff had all stopped to hear what I said. That touched me deeply, just like this song does. 🌺

I can't help but believe that he knows what a sweet, gentle soul he helped to blossom in his daughter before his passing from this life. In my experience with loss (and it is extensive), there will come a time when memories will evoke more tender smiles, and fewer heart-wrenching tears. May that day be soon in coming for you. All the best to you...👍👍❤❤

Years ago, I moved to Wisconsin from the state of Arizona. One night before I fell asleep, I was listening to a song by Benny Hester, "When God Ran," and I closed my eyes and saw my father running to God. After I went to sleep, I got a phone call saying my dad passed away at 4:00 A.m. 😢 2 years later, somewhere in there, my mother also passed away. I know what it feels like to lose those who raised you and loved you and cared for you. And sometimes you think about it and it really hurts and you missed them. Just thought I would share that. I know how it feels to lose loved ones❤

My father passed away 30 years ago. He was 2 years younger than I am now. Despite all that time I still tear up and think about him every time I hear this song. It is a bit ironic that this song came out 3 years before he died and didn't really have the same effect on me until after he passed away. I don't know that many of us lose a parent and not think of the things we could or should have done differently. In any case, I am glad you got to hear this song. Hopefully it will make you think of the happy memories you had with your father.

Angela, I know I've said this before, but you truly are a breath of fresh air. I'm truly sorry about your dad. Sounds like he was a great man. And, just by watching several of your videos, I'm sure he's very proud of the young lady you've become. And thank you for allowing yourself to be vulnerable in your videos. I'm here in tears watching you react to this video. The fact that you're so real is what makes me a fan. As for me, my relationship with my dad wasn't as good as yours as my dad was a very difficult man to get along with. I loved him, but I didn't like him. That's a tough thing to say, but I had to come to that realization to be at peace with my feelings toward him. I wanted to have that close relationship and I saw others who had that close relationship with their dad. It just wasn't meant to be with mine. This song came out long before I lost him and the lyrics hit home when it came out. My brothers and I tried to have that relationship with my dad, but it wasn't a two-way street. Hold all your memories of your dad close in your heart as it sounds like he gave you a lifetime of memories to cherish. When you have all those loving memories, your loved ones are never far from you. I think that you are an amazing woman. This world would be a better place with more people in it like you. Many wishes and prayers for happiness as you continue down the road of life.

I clicked the "like"button BEFORE you started to speak, because your face and body language very clearly showed what you were thinking.
When you spoke, you confirmed I was right.
I'm a 72-year old father of two grown men, I was 40and 43 when they were born, and my biggest regret in life is that my mum and dad never got to see my sons, because I was enjoying "playing the field" with women, and I wanted to avoid being tied down.
When my first son was born, I was awed by the unexpected wave of joy and wonder that filled my soul.
As the song says, "It's too late when we die", but as YOU very correctly said, we should let our loved ones know that we love them, and think twice before saying something in anger, as no one we knows when their last breath will be.
What a lovely reaction, may God bless you.

What is a music reaction? It is a feeling you get from deep inside that
comes to the surface after hearing a song that touches your soul. When
the singer can bring a tear or smile to your face, then you know the
writer and singer have done their job with the song. When it makes a
lasting memory in you heart and mind, than it has created the perfect
reaction because it done this on different levels on your being. To me,
that is a reaction to a beautiful song .when you walk away with a smile
    on your face.

This song always chokes me up. Lost my dad in 2017, the last of my immediate family besides me. Mom died in 2010, younger bro in 2013, older bro in 2016. I'm the only one left. A very weird and sad feeling. I have my own family but I miss those I grew up with so much.

I always loved this song but I guess I never really listened to the lyrics. Hadn't heard it in years. It will be 2 years this November since my dad died. It has a whole new meaning for me now. I wasnt there the morning my dad died. I visited him in the hospital the day before and I never thought that would be the last time I saw him alive. So many things I wish I had said to him. Powerful message in this song.

When this song first came out I liked it, but I couldn't relate, it had no power over me. Now that I'm older and my parents are gone, this is such a powerful song! It just recks me. My dad was in the VA hospital with cancer. I went to see him almost every day, whenever I could. I'm so grateful the last day I went to see him they had him drugged pretty heavily. I was sitting on his bed and he was talking and laughing with someone I couldn't see. I grabbed his hand and told him I would be back to visit him tomorrow, he just smiled. I squeezed his hand and said I love you dad he looked me in the eye and said I love you too son. I was on my way home when the hospital called and let me know he'd past. I'm truly greatful the last words we said to each other were so meaningful.

Bradley and Angela, I am very sorry for your respective losses. My father passed in 2008 after a brief illness. While we had our rough patches at times, we were able to work thru them and were very close for a couple of decades. He was a good man who wanted the best for me. Defining BEST and getting on that path was a struggle for about 20 years. Love did not fail us.

    Angela,
I wish we were neighbors. I absolutely am a thoroughbred music lover and I feel that you are too.
I play my music just loud enough for my neighbors to hear, not loud to bother them, just enough to clearly hear it.
Music is so much a part of our lives.
    Thank you for your videos.

The second time this song came into the spotlight, was a couple weeks after my dad died. Growing up I never really knew my dad bc he didn’t know how to be a dad but I always knew that he tried his best. It wasn’t until my daughter was born that I made a conscious effort to try to get to know my dad. I’ve learned more in that final year than I did in my entire childhood. I will always cherish that year and I will always love him. Many of us sometimes think that we had a terrible childhood but in reality, it could have always been worse.

The singer is Paul Carrack and he wrote the song about his dad who had not long passed away..it hits me hard too..I lost my dad at 19.. I was a daddys girl..he had lung cancer and the night he died I didn't go to visit him..just my mom went..he died at 2am.. if I had gone he wouldn't have died alone as my mom said his lips looked blue and he was 'asleep ' all the way through visiting hours..I'd have known because I was in nurse training.. I'd hada long day on the ward and was knackered..so my selfishness meant my dad died alone..ive never let myself forget that..it has haunted me all my life...I'm 63 this weekend and I still feel guilty..but I learned a hard lesson..I made sure my family knew how much I loved them..I looked after my mom for 7 years with alzheimer's.. then I looked after my sister who had terminal ovarian cancer..I did my best not to let them down again..

Music relates to us in ways we still refuse to see or believe. When feelings come out then it shows us what we refuse to see or believe! #DayOneReacts, your heart and soul came out on this one. I too use this song to relate to my Dad to me. Cause it covers the whole situations we don't realize that happened.

I remember when this song was released (Mike Rutherford was also a member of Genisis) I always thought I was close to my father, and I was there when he passed and I got to say goodbye. But even so, there was still soo much that I didnt get to say, and soo much I know he wanted to teach me that he didnt get to. I miss him and my mom soo much every day, even thought its been over a decade. I can't help but feel like I'm more of a disappointmet to them than enything else. I should have achieved more, been a better son....

I lost both of my parents this past year. My siblings and I constantly talk about how we wish we could have them answer certain questions and how oppressive that new silence is. And of course all the "Mom would love this." and "I wish Dad could have met so and so." And all that.
