I've watched SO many reactions to this song and yours was by far the most thought-provoking and insightful one yet. I can't stress enough how much I love your videos. One of RUclips's hidden gems! Keep it up, homie!
I don’t care how people may trash this band. When this came out, it was the first music video Metallica had done. They had resisted for years as they didn’t want to “sell out”. This video is art. When this came out, it was so amazingly powerful.
Music videos for TV were still pretty new back then. There was no by-the-book music video as there was no book to follow: they were just experimenting and learning what worked, what didn't.
"Resisted for years" isn't accurate at all. Music videos weren't something they were all that interested in or looking to do at all, until they made One, specifically because they felt they had the opportunity to make something different that stood out amongst all of the cheesy videos MTV were airing at the time.
....And Justice For All is Metallica's darkest, meanest, grittiest album of all. The band was still reeling from the death of their original bassist Cliff Burton in a tour bus accident. They brought all of their grief and their anger with them into the studio and it just exploded during these recording sessions. It's pure catharsis caught on tape. Cliff's ghost was with them and it will forever haunt this album.
Imagine roller skating to this, I taught myself how to headbang while rolling specifically for Metal Nights at a rink I used to frequent, it was an absolutely unforgettable experience.
The book is such an amazing concept that it's just brilliant. I picked up a brand new edition this year and re-read it so it's fresh in my mind still. It is an amazing read, you'll marvel at how it's put together... but it's a complete downer. And it stays with you a long time afterward. But it's the kind of book everyone should read at least once.
I always remember my Mum saying to me as a boy that she never trusts a singer that doesn't sweat - so all these years later we have taken it a step further and only listen to music that makes us sweat
Glad you sort of turned out the video and focused on the song. The video for ONE can be super-distracting for a first-listen experience. We had heard this song hundreds of times and absorbed the lyrics long before they released the video--which is also great in it's own way. Great reaction!
I do agree with you but i have heard alot of reactions where it takes the reactor a very long time to get the song when they are reacting to the music video but noticed they are lost in the music understandably so but are missing what is being said in the movie clip of the video and no lyrical content either.. i think the video with lyrics on the side is the best way to react to this one but it does depend on who is reacting to it and this guy does a great job👍
@@anthonybotonis5841 fr ive seen both reactions and enjoy both. its pretty distracting when they try and focus on both and miss both lol. syed did a great job agreed. he mostly listened to the music and lyrics but watched some of the video as well. its clear to syed that the real treat is the music
One was the first Metallica song for which a music video was created. The music video, directed by Bill Pope and Michael Salomon, debuted on MTV on January 20, 1989. The video, shot in Long Beach, California on December 7, 1988, is almost entirely in black and white, and features the band performing the song in a warehouse. It features dialogue and several scenes from the 1971 film adaptation of Johnny Got His Gun. Timothy Bottoms can be seen starring as Joe Bonham, the main character in the novel (written by Dalton Trumbo and published in September 1939; the basis for the 1971 film).
I love your interpretation.. its like you are speaking my mind, but more so. You say things that I lack the ability to voice. Thank you again for a fabulous reaction.. xo
The undisputed GOATS of Music 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘…..they do not play instruments….they attack instruments 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘…..you still have let’s say 40 Metallica-bangers in front of you 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
The scenes in this video are from a movie "Jonny got his gun" and it was on RUclips and might still be, just type in that title. I recommend giving it a watch.
This was the first music video Metallica EVER put out. They had been remarkably reclusive wrt radio and mtv play to this point. But oh boy did they come in strong!
THE SUPPOSED HARDCORE METALLICA FANS DON'T KNOW A DAMN THING ABOUT THIS LEGLEGENDARY BAND. THE IDEA THAT THEY MADE THIS VIDEO GOT METAL INTO THE EARS OF NON--METAL FANS AND THE ENTIRE GENRE JUST BLEW UP! THEIR MUSIC DIDN'T BELONG EXCLUSIVELY TO UNDERGROUND FANS, THE UNDERGROUND FANS JUST COULDN'T HANDLE THE REALITY THAT THEY DIDN'T OWN METALLICA OR THEIR MUSIC! GROW UP HATERS! METALLICA IS BETTER ON THEIR WORST DAY THAN YOU'VE EVER BEEN ON YOUR BEST DAY.
The clips in the video are from the film, but the novel itself is incredible and worth a read. It’s author, Dalton Trumbo, was also an interesting individual who was caught up in the anti-Communist witch-hunt and “blackball” in the 1950s.
Absolutely. Back in the day we first discovered the song on the record or cassette and it was mind blowing content. Then the indulgence of the MTV version came along and turned it into something else... it's a bit of a shame that people's first exposure to the song now is so muddled with the confusion of movie.
Are you planning to dig into more metal bands or are you sticking with the classic rock stuff for now? Because a lot of the major metal bands across the subgenres have extremely dedicated followings.
Great song, tough tough subject. I have the idea that there is a general stigma surrounding metal to the effect that it is shallow, "meat-head" music: a bunch of uncoordinated noise and screaming for people with no subtlety - but Metallica completely blows that stereotype away on every level: the complexity of the music, the depth of the lyrics, the talent of the musicians...
I love their first 4 albums. I don't hate the rest of them..I just don't get excited to listen to them. You should go back and do more Pantera. I know you aren't used to Phil's voice in 5 minutes alone but start with songs off Cowboys From Hell. They weren't as heavy...they got heavier with each new album. You can work your way into the heavier stuff when you're ready.
Great reaction. This song has always hit me pretty hard. Would love to see you react to some TOOL. If you liked this, you'd like the song 'Invincible' off the album 'Fear Inoculum.'

Since you like it when a song is taken from a novel you will like how the musician Ben Harper put the poem by Maya Angelou "And Still I Rise" into a song called "I'll Rise" ruclips.net/video/-vgzdkZe4ig/видео.html
i always thought that this song was a bit overrated, like it got 'blown up' by the newer fans. Also idk why they have videos where there is talking over the music, what a terrible idea. Not saying it's a bad song, just saying i liked their previous stuff better. Overall it's a good album, i think the Black Album is a little better too, slower but hits heavier, like 'punchier'. Sometimes 'slower' can be heavier, like on Dio's Rainbow in the Dark, where it slows down, but the drummer is slamming with both hands, boom, ..boom, . Recommend; Judas Priest Live Vengeance (1982 / Desert Plains) you should see this performance Also; Whitesnake - Still of the Night (official video, is fine, that way you can see the guitarists) David Coverdale's vocals are off the f'n charts (also, i swear Viv Campbell is in the damn video) although it seems they tried to scrub any existence of him being in the band, apparently.
This is also the music video that divided early Metallica fans. Half thought it was awesome the other half thought they were sell-outs for making a music video. MV's were only for pop artists, not metal bands........haha, so silly.
I like the movie excerpts in the video clip, but the spoken parts from these are distracting from the music, for that I much prefer just listening to the album version.
Pls react to Lovebites Swan song w/Chopin intro ruclips.net/video/WBhtqgiXEA4/видео.html. The AND JUSTICE FOR ALL album is mixed so well. You can hear everything so clearly, nothing is drowned out (well other than the bass. there's an interesting story behind that FYI). It's crazy when people comment about Metellica, Kirk Hammet is hardly talked about. He's one bad ass guitarist. Enough said.
