I'm a Japanese car guy, but this car I would definitely buy in a heartbeat if I was in the market. Killer car.
I'm a Ford guy personally, but Chevy did an amazing job on the ZL1.
Zl1 camaros will go up in value . Since gm will kill the camaro once more
That LSA V8 inside that ZL1 sounds beast!!! Best world's fastest car show episode yet.
Love my ZL1! :)
You have good taste in cars, will be a least a decade before I can afford that.
Do you still have it??
@@barthallimixthe2th698me too brother
Must be my favorite US muscle Car atm and I´m not such a big fan of US cars in general but this does it for me, looks great inside and outside, drives well on track and on the road and has the grunt a muscle car should have. Also remembering the way this car came to life and how close the production was to the Concept - that is something that can not be said about a many cars. So just thumps up for this American muscle.
Good point - some cars its easier to give more coverage of the interior. With the Camaro, we felt it was more about the experience of driving it. But you do have a point!
JB
That was a fast 8 minutes. I was actually dialed in the entire time. More Justin Bell please!
GT500 = 15psi Boost = 11.6L effective displacement
14.7psi doubles atmosphere = doubles displacement & HP
ZL1 only uses 7psi = 8.68L(effective)
ZL1 makes 790hp @15psi with performance package
That is the correct top speed. You can hit 184 mph when using the automatic transmission or 180 mph when using the manual. Either way, it's bloody fast and tough to find somewhere you could stay full throttle long enough to reach it!
JB
Don't you think that is pretty quick? A lot of power to put down to the ground from launch, and the traction control does its best to keep up with it!
JB
Did you know guitarmegedonzl1 has 2 zl1s?
Races in the 24 hours of Le Mans from 92' through 96'. Won the FIA GT championship in 97'. Then went on to race in the trans am series winning on multiple occasions.
No - I think you are absolutely correct. I think the same. It has those big square haunches that give it such a strong stance.
JB
Finally somebody with some reason! I hate when people just bash American cars, or just bash European cars.....I love them all.
Thanks for the nice comment. We are just getting going so hopefully it just gets better each week!
JB
The camaro is better than the gt500 in every way but I will admit the mustang can win in a straight line but that's it! Anf if you want to go say the gt500 is faster then y dont we bring out the 707 hp Hennessy camaro now who's staying home?!! (GT500)
I'm glad he finally slowed down and talked a little in depth about the car!
Thank you for noticing. My director loves to do that, especially to put across details that are tough to describe verbally.
JB
May be so but the SLS is as usual more refined and luxurious. The Viper is still loud (in the car) and hot because of those exhaust pipes even though they tried to improve it. And we have the sometimes dangerous handling.
As Carlos Lago said after the test drive: some may call it uncompromising others might just call it miserable.
But when it comes to performance at low price, nothing beats US cars.
That was way better than the last episode
I love the "Britishness" he brings to this. "Bad arse" and "bloody get on it".
My little remote version of this car from Radio Shack handles just like the one above...and it's SUPER FAST (with racing sounds)...go Radio Shack...only $17-20 bucks too.
Hi - its the Breitling Bentley Le Mans watch. They made 1000 of them to celebrate their victory at Le Mans. I got #53 as that was the number of the car I won in. Its kind of cool as it has a hand for each of the 24 hours not just the normal 12. Makes it bloody hard to tell the time..looks cool though!
Great show! Love the format and the obvious play on words "world's fastest car show" thus the hyper pace of the reviews and the quick cuts in and out during editing. The host has lots of credentials as a driver and a racer but down plays all of that with his attention grabbing wit and style of dress, thumbs up from where I sit. I'm a true car fan so I can appreciate the differences, major or minor between the cars he is blessed to drive. Drive what you love, love what you drive!!
One of my favorite camaros ever
gen5 camaro's are amazing cars..
light years ahead of those pos s550 mustangs...i owned an s550 for a year...the pos was no where near as good to drive as the gen5 camaro
facts
Unless we're talking about carbon ceramics, factory brake pads are meant to work in normal conditions, and can survive for a while under stress, but ultimately, any muscle car (ANY) needs a set of track-compound brake pads designed for maximum performance under hot temps if the car is going to see track duty.
Ever actually been to a track?
That being said, the ZL1 heat soaks due to a weak cooling system and cast hypereutectic pistons, which run 20 degrees hotter than the GT500's forgings.
I did! I was cross shopping for a weekend/other car (my daily is a Sentra) between a new Camaro, new Honda Accord Coupe V6 and used 335is. I test drove all of them and I did like the Camaro's driving experience (the salesman let me go nuts) but when driving in traffic I noticed it was a much more white-knuckled experience compared to the others. In the end, I decided to put my 2nd car shopping on hold to help my mom pay off her Volvo. If I had to choose though, I probably would've gone Honda.
This review was much, much better than the last one. I was ready to give up on Bell, but it's nice to see him improving. He's no Carlos, but entertaining none the less.
Depends on the LS engine to me. I really like all the gen IV stuff, especially the LS3/7. I like the JZ engines a LOT though. They come with stout internals and a really good flowing cylinder head. 2 things that are ideal for boost. I'm just a big fan of straight 6s in general!
player1vladimir: "I don't know anything about cars."
And it shows. They derived the SLS from the Viper pretty much the same way they derived the McLaren F1 from the Honda NSX.
Great job, Justin. Screw the hater.
yeah they are, 2014 Z28, its a 427 small block, LS-7 500 horse.......
"May be so but the SLS is as usual more refined and luxurious."
True, although I've heard mixed stories about the Viper as a road car.
I'm going to be honest MotorTrend his show is for non-car people so it will impress the hell out of the I would rather watch Carlos review this car.
I know Justin's been getting a bit of criticism for his segments, but you gotta keep in mind he's quite new to this so give him a chance. He's going to improve and this was probably his best segment yet so he's learning quick :)
The best possible reason to buy the ZL1 is the sound
This is more than a muscle car, much more. It's capable of lap times beyond some "sports cars".
much better than previous episodes!
I like this guy! Unlike their other reviewers that uses too much adjectives in one sentence!
Great video, this coming from a 2013 Mustang GT owner. I love my car and have handed plenty of SS's a ass kicking on the road course. But these ZL1's and 1LE's are the performance bargains for road course work.
Why not? It looks great... way better than a mustang. (design wise)
...The Challenger was a '70's car.....And now it's a thoroughly modern car...which accounts for the weight gain, but I respect your right not to want one, actually I'm glad so many don't like them, I've worked hard to afford mine and I like that I don't see so many other (SRT's). have a nice day.
nice, the sound and editing is much better than before.
And you are absolutely right with that point, but the original comment still was simply about the 911 being faster, just a simple, undeniable statement.
Just for reference, that Nurburgring lap time is about 2 seconds faster than a 2010 GT-R. Well worth the money IMO
I really like the short facts you incorporate into your videos as subtext below.
I just fell in love again with the Camaro
You made me appreciate it a little more than this video did! I like Camaros but I think the rest of the US industry should step up. The Mustang isn't that bad either but the cars could get better
The 2013 GT500 was actually featured in the best drivers car competition BTW, and since you asked, it's faster (around a track) than the Audi R8, the Audi R8 V10 ($200,000) the Porsche 911 GT3 and every Porsche 911 / Boxter / Cayman that is under it. It's also faster than the Mercedes SLS AMG, and in a straight line, it is similar to the Corvette C6 Z06 and the Nissan GT-R, trapping 175 mph in the standing mile straight from the factory, 190+ mph in the mile with a pulley and a tune.
We really don't make alot of good average cars. The engines just don't last but also German and European cars also have insane upkeep costs.
The mustang that you're talking about Is also a 2 seater because they put a rear seat delete in and it also cost 20,000 more than a zl1
but what the guy was referring to was the gt500, which wasnt meant to be a track car it was meant to be a pure straight line car that did 200+ mph. also its the only mustang with that break problem. the base mustang is just a road going car the GT with a track pack is a trackish road car and the gt500s are just pure speed machines
im sorry, im european, and I have to admit that the american musclecars are the best bang for the buck on the market right now. 580 horses for 55000 dollars. You just can't find that with any european ones
I'd like to see GM come up with a new RWD chassis. There isn't anything wrong with this one, I suppose, but it's been in use since before the 2004 GTO was in production I believe. It's nearly 10 years old now and could use a revamp, in my opinion.
SpeedTV presenter (Barrett-Jackson Auction show mostly) and all round awesome guy.
Good overview.
I don't understand your comment.but my daily driver is a 2011 Camaro 2SS Synergy.however I would take the current challenger over what Fiat/SRT is going to turn it into if predictions on the CUDA are correct.
Hah - thanks! You know on the road it feels very quick - great power.
JB
Of course. But when Americans build a good car, they build a really good car. The Viper for example. The Germans loved it so much that they derived the SLS AMG from it.
This Car needs to be In Gran Turismo 6 for sure.
You can say "aluminum", you can say Zee-L1, but you have to say bad arse?
I like this guy and this Camaro.
I didn't say Mercedes derived their engine from the Viper, just that they derived the SLS as a whole from the Viper.
You are wrong. The mustang is supposed to be a track car, not just a 1/4 mile car. Ford was going after the M3 with the new GT's which means they were focusing on a track, not just a straight line.
Great job! You captured the excitement of the car.
Mack daddy? Really. That's so 1990's. I got flash back from middle school when he said that.
The ZL1 is just damn impressive. Ridicules straight line speed and incredible track performance,... it's the best of both worlds.
There's also the 1LE & upcoming Z/28!
I wonder if we'll see a new Boss soon, and Dodge has got to be working on some kind of track-oriented Challenger(I hope)... :-D
Id still rather a Commodore SS or GTS if its a GM car, and as for the Blue Oval then a Falcon GT. both are excellent motor cars
4:10 What Chevy didn't do right in the ZL1 was give it the 427 like the original ZL1. That was reserved for the Z/28. No idea what they were thinking.
Should have been the other way around.
Have you driven one? It is not that bad. Definitely livable if you know how to drive.
When did MotorTrend become an advertising company for cars?
They're factory available, if the older version of the "Design your Corvette" thing page is up, then you'll see that it's a factory option. Not aftermarket. That's a completely asinine argument, would that count if we were doing a GT-R and a Hummer? No, it wouldn't.
are you James Bond?
Not with those shoes on.
a stock GT-R gives you 550hp from a 3.8L V6,and it goes up above 1000 with tuning
Yep if you know how to work the stickshift an LS3 Camaro SS can easily get over 20mpg with 426 hp I do it all the time.
nice review. better than the first episode. keep them coming
Just as the Boss 302 lured me back to domestics after a 17 year absence, so could this car bring me back to GM.
I thought the G8 was awesome too but yeah I definitely see all your points
cant wait for the 2014 z28
I understand your opinion on fords purposed evolution of the mustang.that should hold true with fords whole lineup this same thinking is what took ford out of the dark ages.there mid 90s cars wasnt much different than the cars they made in the mid 70s.but a ponycar is a different animal.not only is it an icon its the reason ford still exist.the V8 and the caveman live axle make it a mustang.
4:06 I like the way he says "badass"
This show is getting better but its missing something
Nice ride! It's about time!
Funny how everybody compares displacement and number of cylinders.. American cars have big engines because of the fact that you can easily get tons more horsepower without changing the internals or worrying about a blowing the engine.. it's a manufacturer's choice of what engine to use.. people just use displacement as an excuse because their car got outperformed by another with a bigger engine..
the old dodge viper had 450hp and people called it a monster a beast. this car has 585 horses over 125+hp more and you call it slow. can you say 11 second 1/4 mile
where does this slot into since the Z28 version is soon to be released? is the ZL1 slotted higher or lower?
Wait, isn't it sacrilegious to get this in automatic?
The count down of the biggest car flame war begins now. *sigh*
Very nice video I enjoyed it
it is, it have about 200 more HP then the Veyron so that means its faster look it up if you dont belive me
Either way, you can almost buy 2 vipers for 1 SLS. Or a Viper and put a Hennessey TT package on and smoke Bugatti's haha.
I find it quite funny how people who don't know who he his, clearly people who don't follow racing, are quick to judge him.
I love Camaros!
i very like that ZL1
great host - the rest of MT could learn a few tricks from him
I like Bell, but the biggest problem with this show is the poor editing, like in the beginning, so many quick changing shots. Its bloody frustrating!!
thanks for the clip
Justin, or Motortrend, can you make a video about advanced track driving techniques? Like trail braking, left foot braking etc?
