      we anglers are a lucky bunch Paddy ..... to get so close to watching the seasons change and then in the Autumn when everyone is trying to tuck themselves in for the winter we have the chance to get a fish like that. Cheers Iain. 🥃

    Lovely early winter day with the usual mix of weather. The late-shedding trees are colorful for sure. The respect you paid that beautiful, feisty fish was exemplary. The take was clearly visible so the fly was close to the surface. Congratulations on another excellent video and hoping for many more to come. Cheers, Steve

    • @IainSB
      @IainSB  8 месяцев назад

      Thanks again Steve I don't tend to fish to deep and try to get the fish to come to the fly rather than chance foul hooking . I love the take and some say that I strike at the fish. I am not convinced that it's better let the salmon hook its self by letting it take and turn and stand the chance of having the fly down its throat or set the hook when it takes . tight lines for next season Cheers Iain 🥃

    Well done Iain, I do love to see your videos. Your care for the beautiful fish is lovely. I tie flies and have done so for over 50 years. But nowadays I only trout fish on resevoirs, fishing for a meal.
    I buy my Salmon a nd a summer Sea Trout on York market.
    I never felt strong enough in my life to wade in a deep salmon river to high level with a giant’s wand, nor could ever afford the price.
    Keep on keeping us happy as you catch & return these gorgeous fish, keeping the odd one for food as at Kelso.
    Nick from York

      Thanks for your honest and frank Comment Nick I started my fishing on the wee burns and have done most of my fishing on association beats . I am far from being a rich man and all of my tackle is discounted or second hand apart from a couple of reels that I bought over forty years ago. I wore overalls and crawled about under cars for a living and lucky that I can manage to save a bit and budget for my fishing and still eat. I love to eat my catch but at the same time see the necessity for returning fish safely . I could go on for hours typing about catching fish in burns long before I found a wand to wiggle but may save boring you Tight lines for next year Cheers Iain. 🥃

    Hi Iain. Just watched a few of your videos & your fly fishing methods & style along with your chosen waters to fish & how you choose to fish them (casting, lines, flies, etc.) match exactly to that of mine although I chose to limit myself to a brook size stream other than big rivers. No distracting music, no bothersome endless irrelevant chatter & advice, just choosing the water (running, pool, etc.), positioning angle to fish your flies & ensuring you have adequate location predetermined to land your fish (BEFORE you hook up) without excess distress to the fish to limit mortality rate upon live release. Thank-you... Ron Carruthers.

      Thank you for your summery Ron we could have been hatched out of the same clutch Its all about having fun and keeping our pastime safe to hand on to those that come after us. I was always told that river craft was a big part of our fishing and it always pays of to try determine how best to fish a pool

I never went out until the afternoon and It was so cold the temp was reading 4oC on the gauge on the car and never spent a lot of time fishing . I spent more time looking at the reds that had been cut and tis only happened in the last few days . I haven't seen so many for quite a few years. Tight lines for next years

    Getting doon the bank is easy… it’s the getting back up that I struggle with now I’m in my sixties. Got a bit of a fright when it didnae go as planned getting back up the banking earlier this year. I now wear a lightweight parmaris, with no effect on my movement whatsoever. I lost a friend to the Tummel some time ago. Great video again Ian, lovely fish.

    • @IainSB
      @IainSB  8 месяцев назад

      The Tummel is a very fast flowing river Tony with a lot of depth. I have had to rescue an angler years ago from the East Haugh beat and when I fish there I always wear a life jacket. it must be a tragic event to have lost your fishing companion to the river . Most beats that I fish on the tay it is compulsory to wear one. I am fortunate that I have a bit of dexterity for an old wrinkly and manage most of the banking at Cardrona . Its the cold that gets me now that I am in my dotage
      Cheers Iain 🥃

    I guess that heavier sink tip was the correct decision!!!

    • @IainSB
      @IainSB  8 месяцев назад

      The river was running about 20 inches above summer level and the tip I was using was a guideline wight compensated one and only the last 5ft was a fast sink so the fish still had to come up to take the fly. I always think that it's better that the fish see the fly above their head and move to take . the slow sink that I had on would only be a couple of inches below the surface and I don't think the fish would travel that far in the cooler water . I think you are right and it is worthwhile thinking about getting closer to the fish when the water is a bit cooler
      Cheers iain. 🥃

    Very nice fish under mixed weather conditions. Looks like plenty of water. We have had over 140 retuning fish recorded in NRW in Germany this year with all the rainfall we have had in the last few weeks. Is it affecting your fishing

    • @IainSB
      @IainSB  8 месяцев назад

      we have seen so many fish travel past on there way upstream Christopher with the water being high but still fortunate to have so many in the pools . the fish are now spawning and its good to see that in the tails of all the pools that there are fish cutting reds . Its good to know that you also have a lot of fish coming into your river this year Cheers Iain. 🥃

    Good stuff:) But are you sad when you compare how few fish there are now and how small they are in average compared to say 30-40 years ago?

    • @IainSB
      @IainSB  8 месяцев назад

      it has been a strange year with a lot of anglers including myself feeling that there were few fish in the rivers . I was out on the last day for a couple of casts and spent more time looking at the reds that had been cut and think that there have been more fish spawning this year than the last 5 years . There have been some large fish in the beat but they have been difficult to catch. I have seen several large fish that have disease on them in at the sides in slack water some in excess of 30lb . but I know that it is in no way anything like the numbers that were in the river 40 years ago Cheers Iain 🥃
