**UPDATE (10/15/24)** The initial bug I posted about 5 days ago should now be included in the latest version of Sober. Make sure you update with the instructions in the (updated) FAQ Hey folks! Just wanna say that I am NOT a developer of Sober, nor am I affiliated with VinegarHQ. While they do watch my videos and offer me feedback (thanks guys), they are the ones you'll want to reach to if you're experiencing any technical issues with Sober. Just as another reminder, Sober at this moment is *experimental software* (though since this video it has made considerable progress) and you may run into issues that will affect your experience or whether you get to play on it. That being said, I'll dedicate the rest of this comment to addressing some commonly asked questions I'm seeing pop up (I will update this comment with more FAQs if I see them pop up): *"How do I update Sober?"* You can update your sober by running "flatpak update" in your terminal or you can go to your GUI package manager (e.g. KDE Discover, GNOME Software) and update your flatpak there. *"I just updated Sober and got kicked back to the setup screen. What do I do?"* Usually Sober updates after the Roblox Android App has updated to a newer version. In more recent versions, Sober should now get the newest APK for you and will let you continue your experience. *"Sober only is involved with the Roblox Player. How do you run Roblox Studio?"* Roblox Studio, unlike the Roblox Player, hasn't been affected by the wine block because Roblox Studio doesn't include Hyperion (Byfron's Anticheat). You should still be able to use the previous Wine-based solutions (like Grapejuice and Vinegar) to run Roblox Studio. However, as there are some well known issues with Studio, there are a few patches that are needed for a more stable experience. They should have the patches listed in their wiki if you wanna follow my 2022 tutorial on building your own Wine, but they also pre-patch it in their Flatpaks they distribute. *"My GPU or CPU is incompatible"* Like previous Wine-based solutions, Sober requires a Vulkan compatible GPU or integrated graphics to run. And it seems like VinegarHQ is not interested in adding support for OpenGL when I reached out to them about this, considering that Roblox's support for OpenGL is quietly being abandoned (after all, Vulkan is literally the successor for OpenGL and why it was code named "OpenGL Next"). Alternatively, I do notice with discussions in the Vinegar discord that graphics drivers updates can lag behind in Flatpak. In that case, you'll need to join the VinegarHQ discord server to find out more about this and when you can expect Flatpak to deliver the newest update for your drivers. *"I am getting banned because Roblox is saying I'm modifying my client. Does Roblox approve of Sober?"* Sober is a new app so we don't have a full idea of what Roblox thinks about the project. But I will say that Bitdancer, a Roblox admin who is the main man behind Roblox on Linux and fighting for its support, is aware of Sober's existence. There was an incident shared in the Vinegar Discord server of someone being allegedly banned for using Sober. However, Bitdancer himself stated that Sober had NOTHING to do with the person's ban and implied that user actually cheated which got them the ban. Roblox issues a majority of their anticheat bans in banwaves, so if you're seeing someone saying they're getting banned for using Sober, good chance that it is someone who got caught using actual cheats on Windows or another device, and they got caught in a banwave when they started using Sober. Sober does NOT modify the Roblox client in anyway shape or form other than fine tuning some FFlags for compatibility reasons. Sober just recreates the Android software stack and creates an optimized runtime environment for the app to run in. There is no way this should be triggering the anticheat and should be issuing you a ban. I have been using Sober extensively and I have yet to see my alt account face action for it. *"Why is Sober closed source?"* It isn't uncommon for people to try and modify the Android app to try and exploit, and Sober will reject these APKs if you supply them. It seems to me this is the big reason why Sober is currently closed-source, as they don't want to repeat what happened with the Wine block and they want to ensure that people can play Roblox on Linux for as long as possible. *"Can I get Sober without a Flatpak?"* Nope. The devs only distribute Sober as a flatpak because of its closed source nature. As I've stated in the video, compiling is no longer a necessity to get the best performance and the most stability. In addition, it's how Sober can remain distro-agnostic.
I thought about this several months ago. I was thinking of making the same thing, but based on macOS, and its name was to be "LiBlox", but I canceled the project because I no longer love Roblox and I had more important work. Very happy with what these people have achieved
I switched about a month ago but I only have it for mobile and vr (which are both linux devices lol) so hopefully this will work for me because my phone isn't great for gaming and most games don't have vr support
@@ThrowawayAccountToComment You're playing with VR on Linux? Which headset, I'm assuming a oculus if you're saying it runs Linux. How is the VR experience on there?
I'm not an expert, but I think Roblox runs smoother because Graphics are rendered through mobile API (Vulkan or whtvr it's called) resulting in higher performance but the visuals can be looking little bit pixelated unlike in Windows.
I've noticed that Sober runs so much faster than Roblox on windows did on an older laptop, on windows I got 30-40 fps most of the time, but sober gets 60, it's awesome!

It also have better mouse lock to me, not causing it to go outside the window, that happened to me on Wine. I really hope there are no problems with Sober so they don't ban it. I see Roblox care a bit but it's sad that they unable to make anticheat to work.
Since android has great support for keyboards and controllers so roblox on android also supports them. Also since sober is a translation layer byfron should also run nativly (to my understanding). I also think we Linux gamers will have support for Roblox longer if sober is closed source since it would be harder to patch out. I am all for open source software but I make exceptions. They can't block it but can make it worse as Roblox on Android runs on ARM based SOCs while linux on a regular desktop is X86. Tho this can be fixed by adding a compatibility layer.
I think instead of actually figuring out how to patch this, which they can't really, is that they're finally gonna make an actual linux port. If they ever do, hope the performance ain't shit for no reason at all

Sober just released an update. Update your Sober to the latest version and you should be able to use Roblox version 639. They also updated it so Sober tells you what version you need.
Just out of interest, since this is technically the android client, does it support desktop games, since I mostly just play phantom forces also I was sure linux support was blocked because roblox/byfron were lazy but I guess they had some reason at least
I haven't found a game that is PC Exclusive yet, but considering that a majority of Roblox's player base are playing on mobile devices, most Roblox developers see it as a requirement to make their games mobile friendly. Meaning that this is an almost negligible issue. However, if someone has an issue connecting to an experience because they're on a mobile device, I'd love to know.
This is why I used Windows 11 because I can play Roblox on my computer without any issues and I also played Roblox on my Android smartphone windows pc is obviously better than Linux.
Awesome, quick question. Does it work with X server? Because currently, my desktop environment does not support Wayland. I would prefer not to install a Wayland compositor and Wayland desktop environment just to run Roblox, I run XFCE4(ubuntu 22.04 package, Mint package set).
Yes. I was able to force Sober to use XWayland using Flatseal. Just take away the Wayland permission and grant the X11 permission. Since it runs on XWayland, it should run on X11
this is apparentyl due the chromebook version not being a good version of roblox. It was the arm version until recently, and now its the desktop-like version compared to the shitty mobile version (its not bad on mobile just terrible on a computer).
the command for downloading it doesnt work for me,it says :error: Unable to load summary from remote sober: GPG verification enabled, but no summary found (check that the configured URL in remote config is correct) can someone help me with it?
As Roblox Studio was not affected by the Wine block because it doesn't run Hyperion / Byfron, you should still be able to use the Wine-based solutions on them (with a few extra patches to address some stability issues)
haven't tried it but use flatseal to enable sober to communicate with other apps (and if needed give permissions to the browser if you also installed that through flatpak)
@gamewebcam only tried app, but website would probably work since it will detect your user agent stuff to determine if you are on desktop/laptop or mobile.
You’ll probably need to use Pavucontrol or whatever sound mixer application you have in your distribution to reroute the application to the right IO. Good luck!
It can still constitute copyright infringement as you’re redistributing code that’s not yours. If it’s free it’s very rare for it to enforce, but I’m playing it safe as I don’t wanna risk getting a strike.

@@gamewebcam ya. ppl might can run roblox using mac os translator which is darling on linux
bro "a few steps back on linux gaming" its just roblox😭😭😭
Used to work for me, but now it doesn't.
I'm using the latest apk bundle, but sober deemed the bundle as invalid/outdated
Sober just released an update. Update your Sober to the latest version and you should be able to use Roblox version 639. They also updated it so Sober tells you what version you need.
@@gamewebcam Newest update cant find my gpu apparently. Just used it today before the update. No idea what its doing
@@Kunorrii new sober update is out, it fixed it for me
@@alone-vf4vy I'll check it out. Thanks for letting me know.
However, if someone has an issue connecting to an experience because they're on a mobile device, I'd love to know.
from what i have found, it does support pc exlusives
it does work with PC games, I'be played Entry Point with it and it works fine. you might need to use the website to join them though
IT SUPPORTS PC GAMES? IT'S PERFECT
Tried this and damn...this is amazing, deleting now my windows partition..
what GPU are you using ?
I use a NVIDIA RTX 3080. You’ll need to ensure you have a GPU or Integrated Graphics that are Vulkan compatible.
@@gamewebcamWhich is basically any somewhat recent GPU
I login on Sober and it immediately throws me back to the login screen, regardless of login method.
uhhh you might want to join the discord to report that.
wouldn't it be possible to use the same method to run fortnite? or valorant when it releases
it doesn't have mobile version
@@Mae-jk5yxfortnite does
Fortnite is arm only and it doesn't run(from what I have heard) if you translate it from arm to x86
@@Kamion008there’s Linux on arm 😊
This is also the same stuff as why I can play Minecraft Bedrock on linux
Man I can finally play graphics 5 on my potato
This is why I used Windows 11 because I can play Roblox on my computer without any issues and I also played Roblox on my Android smartphone windows pc is obviously better than Linux.
thanks, this worked for me on ubuntu with a thinkpad e570
Yo, what's the statusbar/WM you used in the video?
Wael wants to know your location
Since sober uses Android, does that mean that you can only play mobile-enabled games? If that's true, would there be any way to work around that?
I don’t know any games that are PC only.
you can play pc-only games
idk how but i just tested it and you are able to run pc-only ganes!
@@Butterscotch_96 half my games are not mobile enabled
Awesome, quick question. Does it work with X server? Because currently, my desktop environment does not support Wayland. I would prefer not to install a Wayland compositor and Wayland desktop environment just to run Roblox, I run XFCE4(ubuntu 22.04 package, Mint package set).
Yes. I was able to force Sober to use XWayland using Flatseal. Just take away the Wayland permission and grant the X11 permission. Since it runs on XWayland, it should run on X11
@@gamewebcam I got working on a pure X11 session, it works great! No issues so far!
damn just tried and got it working really well on my damn chromebook
this is apparentyl due the chromebook version not being a good version of roblox. It was the arm version until recently, and now its the desktop-like version compared to the shitty mobile version (its not bad on mobile just terrible on a computer).
Sober works better then on windows
2:02 if only other mobile games had this & I didn't have to try & run waydroid via cage
the command for downloading it doesnt work for me,it says :error: Unable to load summary from remote sober: GPG verification enabled, but no summary found (check that the configured URL in remote config is correct)
can someone help me with it?
Thx for the tutorial
When I paste the command on Terminal it says command not found also i'm on chrome book acer if maybe that's why
Got any advice when i try to load up a game it gives me an error and takas me to login Page that dosent even work cause it super laggy
Just know that VMs for Roblox don't work
Yeah but how do i make my updated drivers appear to download the necessary drivers?!
Sober crashes immediately when i open it, can somebody help me?
Can you play pc only roblox games on sober? Like deepwoken(i think)
You can play PC exclusive games on Sober!
I used Waydroid to play Roblox on my Steam deck for a while since the Wine ban
Why don’t you just play it on bluestacks on browser?
Emulating the game introduces a ton of overhead that hugely impacts performance.
my sober won’t open
Not a huge fan of flatpaks, can we use this without a Flatpak? I rather just build it from code.
What's wrong with flatpaks?
can you play pc only games like deepwoken?
does this let you play games that are for PC only?
i miss being able to supply a cheat apk
Are you able to run deepwoken on this?
Iwas going to try it but I remembered that Roblox is banned in my country loI
what about roblox studio!????
It runs under wine using grapejuice
As Roblox Studio was not affected by the Wine block because it doesn't run Hyperion / Byfron, you should still be able to use the Wine-based solutions on them (with a few extra patches to address some stability issues)
How can i connect sober so when i open roblox from my browser it opens roblox on sober?
haven't tried it but use flatseal to enable sober to communicate with other apps (and if needed give permissions to the browser if you also installed that through flatpak)
Can we also install studio?
certain games literally just wont let you play on mobile tho. so players of these games on linux will just lose
I can play games just fine that are pc only.
Are you joining games from the website, or through the app? I’m curious as to whether this might be the reason behind it.
@gamewebcam only tried app, but website would probably work since it will detect your user agent stuff to determine if you are on desktop/laptop or mobile.
@@HackManJay I guess that would make sense yeah
Is there a way to have my Microphone recognised in Sober? Cause it's not rlly doing it
You’ll probably need to use Pavucontrol or whatever sound mixer application you have in your distribution to reroute the application to the right IO. Good luck!
give sober permissions through flatseal
it takes my mic a while to connect and I have to click the button for it to activate in sober
i can't select application bundle you?
I wonder why sober isn't open source
Once open = roblox patch
I sort of address this question in my pinned comment. While not the definitive answer, it is a pretty major reason.
@gamewebcam Okay makes sense. I missed it the first time. Thanks!
@dheisterYT I doubt they could easily patch something like this. You can make a pretty convincing android environment on linux with binder.
does roblox studio work?
There is also waydroid for every other android app and game

Getting a roblox apk from the internet is entirely legit and legal as roblox doesnt cost anything.
It can still constitute copyright infringement as you’re redistributing code that’s not yours.
If it’s free it’s very rare for it to enforce, but I’m playing it safe as I don’t wanna risk getting a strike.
@@gamewebcam i love apks 🏴☠
yea this is cool but there games where you can only play on pc
Wayland kind of sucks still. Hopefully some day it will be ready for prime time, but not yet.
can yiu play computer exclusive games on it tho
yes
