Hi Michael. I realize its been 3 years since you made this video and probably won't see this comment, but here it is anyway. First of all, it is so impressive and inspiring to me that not only did you do a pretty cool guitar build, but you also did a great job with the video filming and editing. I'm currently laid up with an injury and have a lot of time on my hands so this series is entertaining and inspirational. I've wanted to build my own guitar for a LONG time, but lack of self-confidence (fear of failure) has kept me from trying. Today, you have inspired me to take a chance. I'm making a list of everything I need and am ordering the tools/parts that I don’t have already. Thank you for the inspiration and the lessons.
Hi Paul Thank you so much for your comment. So happy you enjoyed the videos. Hope you’ll have a lot of fun building guitars as I have… and also that you have a speedy recovery. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment 😃🙏🏻
My son and I did one several years ago. We were fortunate to find a piece of poplar 20” wide which made it way easier. It was not nearly as hard as we expected and a lot of fun. Buying a neck is is not a sin, a luthier I talked to told me that he doesn’t build necks anymore because companies like Warmoth are good quality and it’s not cost effective. I like how you did your template, i free handed ours. Good work
Michael, I have watched every video you've made from your two Novo inspired builds several times now. Like you, I fell in love with the look and sound of the Serus J, but not the four-thousand dollar price or twelve month waiting list to get one. You are my number one guitar building hero right now. If I attempted my own version of a Serus J, I would likely wait until I get access to a CNC machine instead of cutting and routing everything by hand like you did. Or I could 'cheat' and just get a pre-cut and routed Jazzmaster style body from Warmoth or somewhere like that. Going the route you went is the Holy Grail of attempts though, so I commend you completely for all the builds you've made. Your videos are also wildly entertaining and fun to watch. All the best to you.
Hi Randal I’m glad you enjoyed the videos. 🥳Thanks so much for watching and for your nice comments. 🙏🏻😃 Good luck with your project however you end up doing it… but cutting the body is not that hard and it’s fun 🤩 …. Just saying 😉👍
I've not watched them all yet, I started on the pickguard using a jigsaw one as that's my next move on my first build of my own design. I've enjoyed though, I like yourstyle and skills and coincidentally recently discovered novo guitars and I think they are my favourite aesthetically too so may try making one like you have one day. Got to make my girlfriend a strange one after I finish my monstrosity . Good work all 'round!
You done a great job on this guitar man. I'm not a fan of this shape of guitar though it looks very odd. But I really like the paint job you did. Well done.
Thank you all for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it. New episodes of this series is coming out Tuesday and Friday for the next few weeks and after that I aim for ones a week every Friday. Be sure to subscribe and click the bell icon to catch the new ones. 😉👍🏼
I’m actually looking at building a guitar for the first time too, and funny enough I’m also using ash and basing my idea off a Novo, and will probably use Lollars 😂
Michael - You've really inspired me. I'm in the process of purchasing some tempered wood that is really old as you have. Thanks for all you're doing. I love your channel.
Great work! I build my first guitar about three years ago following a similar pattern: purchased neck and using old pine boards from my grandfathers workshop that I'd been saving for just the right project. They're not 212 years old but they were close to 20! I can't wait to watch the next episode while the paint dries on my third guitar in my garage (and then I get to spot-sand and fix a couple of issues... yuck).
Oh dude I had completely forgotten a the contact movie until now. Lol thanks for reminding me I loved this movie. Also the guitar is amazing. I have acquired a lot of old longleaf heart pine the tight grain stuff that you got there and have been wanting to make a guitar with it because I love the look of the tight lines. But wasn't sure if it was a good idea to do. But it looks like it worked wonderfully for you so I'm going to try it thank you
Hey Branden Thanks for a great comment 😃🙏. Good luck with your old pine project... and yes Contact is amazing. Also responsible for some great one liners I think 😉
Hej Gustav - du har go’ guitar smag... 😃🥳.... hvis du kommer forbi østerbro med din Novo så giv en besked. Vil vildt gerne prøve en men findes ikke mange i dk. 👍🏼😉
I am thinking of doing a similar build but the Fano RB6T. Can you give more details on how you got the actual size of the body? I wouldn’t have a printer that big or would not know how to judge the real size without having one to compare it to. Thanks!
Hi Greg Sounds like a great project👍😃. If you can find a picture of the guitar that is taken “straight on”, not from an angle, with for example p90 pickups, then you can determine the size because you know the exact size of the pickup. I just use Apple pages but you can do the same in many programs. I open a new document and drag in the picture. I turn on the ruler and set the project to zoom to actual size. Then I just enlarge the picture until the p90 pickup has the right length as measured by the project ruler and that’s it. To print it I first print it as as an pdf and open it in adobe reader. From there I print it as a poster on a regular printer. That way I get 4 or 6 sheets os A4 paper I can put together with some tape. I cut out the shape and make a mdf template. Hope that helps 😉
How did you figure out the Novo dimensions? It looks Right? Love how you are doing this with minimal tools. Really cool, and something I’d like to do...though, I do live in a small apartment?
Great video! I‘m looking forward to watching the rest of the series. Two questions: What video editor did you use and did you find a better way to heat-treat the wood?
+VintageVik Thanks so much. I’m using Final Cut. I haven’t heat treated other stuff then the first ash body. I heat treated to imitate what happens to wood when it gets old. So when I got the idea to buy old wood I didn’t have the need to go down that heat route anymore 😉👍🏼
What advice would you give me as a first time jigsaw user trying to cut out his first guitar body? (I did watch and paid attention at 10:01). For example, what type of blade would work best here? In English or Danish: whichever you prefer and is quicker - I can understand both in writing (fellow Scando but not a Dane).
Lad klingen arbejde uden at presse for meget. Måske kan du øve dig på at skære efter en streg på noget reste træ. Håber det kan hjælpe 😉👍
Haha looks like your Mom is a good promo person for you as I'm not the only person sent this way...great video ...interesting story ...and good presentation as you cover the instruction quickly but still easy to understand...looking forward to seeing the rest of the videos! ps: buy Mom lunch!
Hey! I'm working on a project like this too. It is actually a Fender Marauder copy and i guess we all know how much you got to pay to get an original one (like $9000USD 😬). The problem is that i can't find any template of the guitar and i have no experience with guitar building. I hope it turns out well 👀
Hey good luck. Great project. I made the template myself. If you can find a picture online that is straight on, not at an angle and there’s something in the picture you know the exact dimensions of - a pickup maybe - then you can make it the size and make a template from that. That’s what I did. ... and thanks for watching, really appreciate it 🙏😉
