Canon 6D Mark II Hands-On Field Test

- The original Canon 6D was the entry to full-frame shooting for many photographers, but it's been getting a little long in the tooth. The new version brings a number of features from the excellent 80D, along with a controversial new sensor. Is the 6D series still a great entry point into full frame? Chris Niccolls and Jordan Drake went to shoot BTS of a commercial film shoot to find out!
Special thanks to DDG (www.ddg.tv) John Cameron (www.metaproductions.ca), and Dave Patrick at Jet1

I just bought a pretty much brand new 6D mark II for 1200 bucks from a guy switching to Sony. What a steal! Upgraded from a 70D and love it.
I have a 700d and planing to but a 6d mark 2. Do I see the improvement?
@@rocha2333 a big improvement
justanotherguycommenting what lens you use with your 6d?
@@rocha2333 i dont have one, but most cameras are the same, use ef lenses not efs, a good "budget" but super sharp lens is a 24-105mm mark i or 17-40mm f4. Otherwise use prime lenses like 50mm or 28/24/20mm
@Atlas Dallasthe bots are everywhere
You are doing the best camera reviews. Period.
I love this channel ! Whenever I want to get a little more info on the camera that I'm looking for I always come to this channel. Great channel amazing content.
I've heard about it, but knowing how passionate are the creators, is awesome!
I have a Canon 7D but I'm also a Panasonic GH5 owner. I wanted a full frame to replace the APS-C, and was waiting for the 6D replacement. I was so underwhelmed that last week I went and bought a second hand but barely used 5D Mark III for 2/3 the cost of the 6D. If I didn't already have Canon glass I would have got the D750.
I'm a 60D & A6K user, so the 5D3 is a better FF entry than this 6D2?
Or go back to m4/3 with G85 or GH5?
Maybe I'll wait for A7III to come out.
I own a GH5 and a 5D Mark III. The Panasonic has one stop more dynamic range
EVOKIN a7 and a7ii have 14 stops dr, I believe, according to dxomark
6D2 is better than 5D3, but not by much. And not for video. And not for dr.
Thanks for the review, guys!
Interesting to see your comparison between the Rebel, the 5D IV and the 6D II in dynamic range. It made me think it would be great to see a real life comparison between sensor sizes. I shoot micro 4/3 and have always assumed that full frame would knock out my small sensor in dynamic range. But it would be really fun to see how much of a difference the sensor size really makes when you shoot portraits or landscapes.
Just recently found you guys and loving your reviews. Thanks for keeping it unbiased and giving it to viewers straight. It's refreshing now since nearly every review out there is a fluff piece.
6D shooter here. I was soo hoping for the 6DMk2... the dynamic range is the most important to me too. And I guess I'll be getting 5DMk4 then..
YTDekus 5D mark IV has same DR as entry level Nikon's from 2011....
think either i would save up for a 5D4 and meanwhile stick with aps-c and good glass (sigma 18-35mm, 50-100mm, etc)
brilliant job apreciate it.
i'am really worried about dynamic range of this camera!!!!!
now it"s all cleared, and hope your next video soon
thanks......
Honestly, you guys give the best reviews as far as I'm concerned.
I can not understand why they didn't put the 5d4 sensor into that machine there was not about this , in the 6d line ?
Well probably never get to know the whole truth behind why Canon's been doing this (gimping their cameras) for such a long time. Sure, they'll push their customers towards more expensive cameras like the 5D MK IV but, what if I am happy with APS-C and simply want a Canon camera that has 4K video? This way they'll ruin their business in no time. Both canon and Nikon have not yet realized that it is high time to produce the products the people want.
Awesome video mate ! Thank you !
Thanks for the reviews. You guys always do an amazing non bias job.
Disappointed about upgrade from old 600D. What to select: 6D mk2, 80D or 5D mk3? Use it primarily for portrait photos in the city.
The 5D mk4 price is almost two times higher, and I think can I buy cheaper device with good quality or it’s only way to go to 5D mk4? Need your advice. Thank you.
Great review!!! Its unfortunate that Canon had did so many wrong choices on 6D II tho...
Now I know what is in TCSTV's Worst Camera Gear of 2017.
Wait - it's only July and TCSTV hasn't even reviewed the Nikon D850 yet. Just kidding. The D850 looks to be a "monster" dslr (and I'm a Sony camera person).
Of course, Canon will win the Coveted TCSTV Title - back to back years! 5DmkIV & 6DMkII! with their two most important cameras...
D850 need to be a monster. Nikon new cameras is look way better than Cannon's, but Nikon is likely to be number 3. Canon is still number 1, at least for now.
The 6D Mk ii will be a top seller, for a very good reason. It is an excellent camera and a lot of fun to use. I really love the noise floor, as it makes high ISO pictures look almost noiseless. The number of complaints about this camera proves that people just like to rag on a camera they don't have. I have never heard so many complaints from people who don't own the camera, and therefore not as qualified to make critical comments as someone who owns one. :-)
@Nunya Or...ppl like you simply buy products on pure loyalty and hate the fact that Canon has yet again let you down. The only ppl who seem to like this camera are current 6D owners frustrated their dated camera just got a "dated" upgrade. Top seller? lol sure, I doubt even you can convince yourself of that. I'm guessing you didn't pay attention to this review or many others. By the way hate to reveal a hidden truth you fail to realize, many reviewers get these products (cameras, phones, etc..) from the manufacturer and criticize the product that they themselves do not own. This helps the consumer to not make a $2k mistake (like your probably did) or make a $2k purchase. So yes, we are all qualified to comment and have an opinion even if we do not own the product since after all, we are in a COMMENTS section on youtube ;)
I have an original 6D.. no way I'll upgrade to this...
I have watched 6 reviews today and you guys by far are top notch
I’m subscribing to your channel period
I was waiting to upgrade to the 6D mkII from my 60D, and developing a collection of lenses accordingly. Given the preliminary reports of disappointing DR, I instead purchased an 80D and added the very affordable Canon 10-18mm to my collection. As exclusively a still photographer, I'm loving it. Full frame will have to wait for another day or iteration. I know I could use lens adaptors, but keeping an eye on which ones work best with what in what situations would give me hives!
Glad I got the 80D
All I needed to know ! Thanks.
Its raining Field Tests, TCST is benchmark of genuine reviews. Great video as always.
Yep, I stopped looking at the 6DII when I saw the omission of the headphone jack let alone all the other things you guys mentioned. It should have had at least the same feature set as the 80D.
The saddest thing is, based on their past upgrade schedule, this thing is it until 2022. It's already losing to a 3 year-old Nikon. What will their competition have in 2020?
Kevin Liao maybe they are thinking to close their camera department. Who knows....
Well considering that they stopped upgrading cameras since 2010 or so, I was expecting such worse Canon camera and not suprised at all
Don't forget that the 6D sold incredibly well.
People were asking for more entry level user features (flippy screen) and Canon delivered.
"At the right price" this is still unquestionably the best entry level full frame body on the market. Canon delivers the best user experience by a wide margin.
Bud The Cyborg
Not really the 6d mkii has not been recalled three times unlike Nikon D750
Yeeeeowzah! Ouch, ouch, ouch! Fair (and devastating) review. Thanks, guys!
Very helpful! Thank you. I'm considering an upgrade from my 6D mk 1, and the video have great insight. I'm looking to use the camera often for video & ur vid really shed some light on the topic.
As first, thank you for the review, I really enjoyed it. then I have a question, how is the live view tracking with the sigma 85 art on dual pixel cameras? Does it work well?
Canon EOS SL2/200D. This is just a request from me. I know this is a Rebel line camera model but I would love to see review about this camera from your perspective.
Jason Kune86
*agree*
Hoping to review it. If not a full field test, we'll do a short review on an upcoming TCSTV Live.
Jordan @ TCSTV
That is a perfectly sensible mirrorless camera fighter, particularly in light of Canon's attractive compact lens options: especially the lightweight EF-S and [stabilized] EF primes... which sell lightly or barely used, ubiquitously, at commodity prices. Quite possibly a winning player in what may turn out to be a sensibly profitable transition strategy to mirrorless for Canon over the longer haul. The SL2/200D surely makes more sense than current mirrorless offerings in a number of respects for many consumers.
Very honest review 👏👏👏👌
Thanks so much for a comprehensive review of the 6D mark ii. I was super excited but I got say your breakdown especially of the Video and HDR Raw capabilities has made me look elsewhere. Loved this vid guys!
Hello professor . I have some questions . Should I buy 6d mark 2 or 90d ? I need a camera can performance in low light . The reason I don't like 6d mark ii is all focus points clumed in the middle . 90d is crop sensor but it has 8 digic . They are the same price . Please help.
to have worse dr than a frickn rebel for 500 bucks is a huge god damn shame. and those focus points may work on apsc, but clustered up like that, it is gonna limit you without you even knowing
Was a 6D shooter, was holding out for this camera before I ran out of patience and just went Sony. Glad I didn't wait =)
Out of curiosity, which Sony did you get? I have an original 6D, needed AF-C for making videos here, so I went with an a6300 myself.
Joshua Koerner I went with the A7R2. And outside of the ridiculously expensive Sony glass I'm satisfied with the switch. I made a vid about it on my channel. I'm surprised you went from FF to crop!
Until the a7 iii series comes out, IMHO the crop bodies are equally as good as the FF versions, tuned slightly differently
From a film-making stand point too APS-C crops are the closest thing you're gonna get to a Super 35 that the cinema and indie-cinema industry uses. a6300 is a great choice! but an a6500 would be best i think. Unless you wanna enter the cinema-grade cameras lol, then you'd probably go back to canon C-hundreds lineup or go sony FS lineup.
6D 2 is pretty bad ass, now the it can be had for $1699....
wow, this is such an insanely good review! Thank you!
Please help m i am upgrading from canon crop size rebel 700d to 6 mark ii ?? Is this a good choice
i feel disapointed with this 6dii, i have the 6d and i wanted to upgrade but only for a better DR as i do landscape photography. i cant believe that i need to go to A7ii with metabones or change my system to nikon and get a d750... i will miss my ts-e24ii but canon doesnt care about their clients. a 3300€ 5div isnt an option for my hobby €€€€. i feel let down by canon :(
Paulo Pereira same dude, same. It's not a fun club to be a member of. :/
The a7 iis have like 2 more stops of DR though so that's good
I was looking at 6D is it worth getting or am i just better off with the 80D
Get the 80D. I was about to order the 6Dii when the dynamic range problem, tests occur, so I went for the 80D, which i could sent back after the first reviews of the 6Dii would hit the net, if it would fare better.... I was on my edge here when the high iso came, but rejoiced on my 80D choice for the PP, DR
At least after this review, I'm happy with the 80D... ALL-I video for grading (does the 6Dii only have IPB?). 7Fps,... best dynamic range in the sub 2000€ segement for canon... The DR on low iso is really good. Like really good...
80D is the best bang for the buck right now for Canon Users, if you don't want to switch...
I was also considering Sonys but I want a work horse and am invested in Canon lenses, which Canon's cameras are. Sony low battery life, overheating, compressed raws (but the DR is nice)....
I second this...new 80D owner and love this camera. Recently moved away from mirrorless back to dslr. For the money you can't really go wrong with it.
Do you believe you can still get a correct/ the desired composition using the viewfinder without focus and recomposing? Or are the AF-Points not spread wide enough?
If you have a Canon 20D, with all EF lenses and you wanted to upgrade what would you do? I'm at the cross roads, switch companies to Nikon, Sony or Fugi. What would suggest?
What was the statement I heard the other day, every four years Canon brings out a four-year-old camera.
I heard Canon cams have sucky dynamic range, but I didn't know it's that bad :o
Nice review, thanks guys. Couple of things that I don't think were addressed
How's the 6D2 silent shutter compared to the 6D & 5D4?
What is the keeper rate in servo using longer fl lenses (eg 100-400) on moving subjects?
How effective are the AF modes, esp spot, 4 and 8 point expansion?
How's the frame rate vs # of raw shots vs buffer?
Was GPS able to quickly get a lock and keep it?
Does the WIFI work as well or better than the 6D?
Battery life in the field, good/bad/other?
As always the best and most useful reviews on youtube. Thanks.
You know this camera sucks when Mike Drew doesn't make an appearance in this review.
Unfortunately I just don't find the 6D2 compelling in any way. Either fork out the extra money and get a 5D4, get a D750, or go mirrorless with an a7 or a7ii.
mcrazza Or go APS-C
Or go Pentax =)
mcrazza agreed. I find the mirrorless cameras Canon's making as well to be lacking anything compelling about them. I think part of the issue is trying to protect dependence on EF-mount lenses... but I don't think that canon's users are as dependent as they think we are on those if they lose all their brand equity with us. Made a video on that subject actually
I am happy to you guys are shooting more regular again
How does compare the video quality of the 6d mark II with respect to the older 6d? One of the main issues of the 6d were the aliasing artifacts: I hope that the new models has been improved.
Also, is it possible to manually set the audio levels, during the video recording (on the older model it was possible only before the recording)?
Finally i can drop the raw! Here i come jpg :-)
***GOOD REVIEW... BORING/UNIMAGINATIVE CAMERA***
BTW: You're looking funky and dignified with that grey hair growing in, Chris...
As usual, I thoroughly enjoy your reviews. Glad you pointed out the anti-flicker. Forgot how important that feature is.
Great work guys... love the content!
I'm a 6d user and I'm definitely not buying this mk ii
Same!!
I sold my Canon gear... Still have almost new 24-70 f/2.8 II & 70-200 f/2.8 IS II lenses to go. Selling off gear is such a pain in the ass. Feel sorry for Canon shooters facing the same tough decision to switch...
Keep the glass and buy a Sony, it most likely works fine when adapted,
Those lenses would work like a dream on a MFT camera, too, so you might want to hold onto those for the future.
Me too... Dissapointed...
Canon is redifinging the expression "resting on their laurels"... I know who this camera is for: people who still think that in 2017, full frame dslr are a must have if you want to be considered some type of "professional"... I am a canon shooter (5d3) and after shooting with fuji mirrorless (xpro2 and xt2) for the past month, how am I supposed to not resist the temptation to dump all my canon gear (and save some money in the process) and go with fuji?
I want to buy a new camera for video shooting and photography especially for video shooting and was planning to buy 6d mark ii but I am not pleased by it after watching this review. Will you tell me please which camera should I buy for the same purpose at budget of $2000
Looking to get my first full frame camera...trying to decide between this 6D and a Nikon D780. Any recommendations?
I’ve had a Canon T5i before..
Primarily uses are landscapes & Portraits with some sports sprinkled in.
Canon should change their slogan from "delighting you always" to "screw you (consumer) always". When Sony release new camera people go wow OMG is that possible? When Canon and Nikon release new camera people were like yeah yeah… whatever… it was so boring.
I had shudder problems when I saw 'Psycho' for the first time.
why u even bother, just re upload the 6d hand on vid from 5 years ago
max factor legit truth XD
It may be worse than the original 6D.
lmao
The reason is that there's less dynamic range and worse video than the original 6D lol
Why you even bother commenting
how is the 4:3 frame lines in the viewfinder? Does the viewfinder gets darkened if you use this ratio?
sir pls tell me canon 5d mark ||| vs 6d mark || which one is better for photography .i wanna bye this .
The dynamic range is poor and why would you spend $2000 on a camera like this when in fact this is a entry level camera?
Will you sheep people EVER quit taking the bait from marketing & advertising spin doctors interested only in more profits, and their obedient media shills... and STOP calling high performing cameras "entry level"??! I **founded** ...
...√ an industrial advertising agency, √ specified and purchased photo microscopy lab equipment as final authority, AND √ shot as a pro from 1982... and OWN -- preferentially & provisionally, as APS-C complements to Sony, Nikon, and soon, Pentax FF (for IMAGE QUALITY-FIRST CONSIDERATIONS in 'field use'): Sony A5000/LCDVF: 3 VFs, in fact... Canon M3/EVF... and Nikon D3400, all replacing Pentax K3 in regular use. They weigh, in TOTAL, about 38.5 ounces loaded. **I "entered" in 1954** with a Leica M3 double stroke RF in my hands. How about you, Mr. Bailey?
"Horses for courses," as the Brits say. Forget the hype. Baa?
because I can't afford the 5D or the 1XD
This body was a little disappointing. No 4k, no headphone jack, one card slot, 97% viewfinder. I kinda expected those, given Canon's ways of attempting to funnel their users into buying more expensive equipment, but I always hoped the sensor would show the same improvements seen in other Canon cameras. Using a well worn 600D and Fuji looks a lot more attractive every day.
I've leased a 6D and it still produces some nice results and intend to lease an 80D too. Not big on the FF hype, APSC is just fine given a fast enough lens and Fuji offers that.
If you have to choose, is the 80D better than the 6 dMark 2? Now i am using the 700 D. thanks for your comments.
Best greets from germany.
just curious, is it possible for 4k and a higher bitrate to be introduced through a software update or would is this more so a hardware issue?
Even if anything else would be great, the capability to get the most in PP and the potencial of DR are too important today (the possibility to shoot in low light with much lower ISO, and then push the file 2-3EV up to get a regular image without noise, is something too good to be left when you try it and it works), so "no thanks" Canon, you have to try harder.
You should always try to chose the right ISO in terms of even exposure. Raising the shadows usually produces more noise than going with the ISO you need. Of course, you shouldn't overexpose when you want to maintain details in the highlights.
Hubieee problem is when you can't bracket shots, and have to expose for the sky and the land or whatever. There're a lot of situations where in order to get detail in one you lose the detail in the other just because of very contrasty lighting. Those plentiful real world scenarios are part of the problem-they aren't accommodated for in this camera
There are situations where you can´t push the ISO, and with ISO-less sensors you can do much with this method, but the DR must be there. And not even talking about wide range bracketings...
Joshua exactly. People who keep repeating the good old "learn to expose correctly!" have probably forgotten that in some real-world scenarios the scene is so contrasty that you can't expose "correctly", or the subject is moving so bracketing shots is not possible. Dynamic range is the way to go.
Four years technology
Great video , a question to Giordon , what was the actual video bit rate of the mk 2 in 1080 / 60fpm ,thanks
canon 6d mark ii and sony a7ii, which one you will use or let see you will buy?
I made the mistake of being an early adopter and found it the same or marginally worse than the 80D in just about every way.
Did you return it?
Bobby mind explicating further?
ARXV Photo Yes, which I really hate doing, but it was obvious after just a few test shot comparisons that there are little or no perceived gains in the IQ/noise/DR department.
I don't want anyone to think I'm Canon bashing, as it still is a pretty great all-around camera if you must have FF for some reason, but the 2X price of the 80D could not be justified for me. I suspect many will go for the 5D IV or a different brand once more reviews come out.
Joshua - I took replicate sample shots in a variety of situations, low light, shadow lifting/highlight dropping in post, color, etc., and compared the images. What I found was no significant gains with any of my comparisons.
Canon, the company who updates their cameras every 4 years with 4 year-old technology! Way to go, Canon!
I've been doing a lot of research lately, A/Bing the 6D Mark II against the 5D Mark III and was wondering what your thoughts on that are? I do a lot of family photography as well as occasional weddings and nature photography so I'm trying to find a camera with strong autofocus to capture quick moving people/children. I was hoping to spend somewhere around the $2000 price range. Any help/suggestions/thoughts would be hugely appreciated! Thanks!
guys if u were in my shoes which camera will u buy for all around(not interested in sport)>sony a7 Mark 2 or canon 6d Mark one ?
Sony a7II - 1500€ - entry level sony ff camera
Canon 6d MK2 - 2100€ - entry level canon ff camera
Sony a7II - 1/8000 shutter speed, 1/250 flash sync, a real IBIS, zebras, focus peaking and histogram on the evf, incredible dynamic range for the price, you can adapt every lens ever made
Canon 6D MK2 - 1/4000 shutter speed, 1/180 flash sync, digital ibis that warp alot, no zebras or focus peaking, poor dynamic range compared to other ff cameras of the same price, you can adapt only a poor amount of lenses.
With the canon 6d mk2 you have an articulated screen and dual pixel af but bad codec, wtf canon?
You can find at lower price and better specs the nikon d750 or 610, sony a7 or sony a7II, a used canon 5D Mk3, or a pentax (yeah i know...)
This camera imho is only for who has invested a lot on the canon system and don't have the money for a better model, cause canon is overpriced but has a complete all around lens system, this is what canon has, the system of third and first party lenses, nothing more because she is not that competitive when even a 3 years old nikon do a better job on the sensor side.
CrexTV I just bought the 6D (original) over the A7 ii because of the selection and affordability of Canon and Tamron EF glass. Sony just doesn't have much to choose from in the lens department and the good Zeiss glass simply isn't affordable. Otherwise the Sony is a better body. I have a Panasonic G85 for video, so that played into my decision as well.
Christopher Poole I understand your perspective re price of lenses. How many do you have / need?
What about Sony A9!!
Working on it!
TheCameraStoreTV some people are not patient to wait because the Sony A9 has tons of things to talk about. That's what they are not taking in consideration
have you experienced any issue with shooting with Liveview on the Sigma lens? I saw you posted the sample images of the camera with the Sigma 85mm art lens. I just got my copy yesterday and realized that I run into "error message 70" everytime shooting through liveview with a Sigma lens.
hey. Ive followed your channel and always appreciate your insights so I wanted to ask you something. So im switching to Canon as I've started shooting video with the good old C100 Dual Pixel AF and bought into their lens line-up too, but I am thinking to also get a full frame Canon. Ive been shooting Nikon for a long time with the Nikon D800, mainly landscape, architecture, street, event and some portrait and have always been happy with the Dynamic Range in spite of other annoyances. My question is, what camera should I really switch to in Canon's full frame lineup without breaking the bank?
Canon is so predictable that I called all of these shortcomings weeks ago. I have no clue who’s making the decisions over there, but even worse, who’s green lighting those decisions. Sheesh!
Canon could not outdo the pro models With this entry Level camera I Guess.
It's the bloke who is green lighting the decisions who is is making the decisions.
Perfect so it's time. I have been saying it for a while now. It's clear going to the garage to find the camera box and walk away from canon.
I'm using a Canon 70d and I'm thinking of upgrading to full frame.
I have no other option other than the 6d mark II, considering the price point.
What should I do?
Upgrade or not?
Hello! Which one do you think it would be better, the 6d mark ii or the new 90d? Thank you!
I've been taking the 6D Mk II negative reviews with a grain of salt so far, but I'm afraid this one has put the last nail in the coffin for me. I can overlook the majority of faults and omissions, but the dynamic range is the kicker. That's the whole point for me shooting in RAW in order to bail out my poor technic, lol. I really wanted to move up to a full frame sensor from my M3, but now I'm considering sticking with APS-C and getting a Fuji X-T2 instead. I love the thought of having the option of shooting old school style.
CHRIS LJ The Xt2 is a great camera and I have a 6D. I borrowed my friends and loved the camera and I was surprised by the quality of the pics. The colors and sharpness are excellent! The Fuji lenses are excellent at a reasonable price.
LR does an excellent job with RAF files now. Skin tones are perfect on the Xt2.
Thanks for the confirmation Ryan.
Chris you might want to wait for some time, there are rumors going that there will soon be an X-T2 successor with sensor stabilization. Other than that, you will love the Fuji system. The handling is very comfortable and all lenses are really good.
Wow, built in image stabilization would be fantastic. Thanks for the tip Alexander.
Summary: If you are looking for an entry level FF DSLR get a Nikon D750!
Danny B. Nope. It just got recalled. Dont even go near the D750.
Get a Sony A7II or wait for A7III
Mohammed Fuadh have you ever shot with D750? I had and mine was affected, however I was never able to replicate the problem myself. It is a fantastic camera. These issues are blown out of proportion
Nikon replaces the entire shutter mechanism of the D750s that are affected. Most are affected so you can pick up a used one and send it for effectively a new camera
Really though, why even get a FF DSLR at this point if all u can afford is the entry level one? :P This canon is basically a no-go and the 750 is getting old. Maybe Nikon does a refresh soon.
I am really curious just how many will sell. I think it'll do better than maybe it should due to the name on the front (and the Canon glass is a plus) but will it outsell the D750 over the next year?
How is the audio monitor for video? Is it as good as the cropped-sensor 80D model?
That being said it sucks. Big. Entry level? Price is not.
The rebel/80d is entry level this is a budget FF
Berno Bruvn Mikcalson But we're still not getting full features that we should. The a7ii has s-log for example. And a headphone jack and clean hdmi output. All of those should be had on the 6D ii in my opinion as well
No it's not, which is the frustrating part. No one is going to buy a $2000 camera first, and for the rest of us it's a non-starter. "Entry level FF" means nothing because FF is fundamentally not entry level.
Joshua Koerner I don't disagree, but the A7 series is closer to where the 5D sits on the scale. So far only canon and Nikon have budget FF cameras under the flagship and pro level cameras. I do feel like people are ignoring the awesome cinema line that's designed for video first and foremost though
Joshua Koerner Finally, someone else who understands the fundamentals. God, I'm tired of this "entry full frame" crap. It's full frame... that's already beyond entry level.
Wow - I hope people aren't putting too much stock in this review - not to be too critical, but this is a bit misleading. I'm very familiar with the 6DmkII, along with some other Canon bodies and also some Nikon bodies like the D750. There's no question all bodies have some pluses and minuses. But ... no pop-up flash? Are you kidding me? It's like you're trying hard to find things to not like. As for the dynamic range, this is only truly apparent when recovering detail from deep shadow. So if you chronically under expose and plan on being saved by Lightroom then yes, you will be let down by the lower DR on the 6DmkII. That said, if you expose correctly and even better, expose a stop or so to the right you'll very easily overcome this. Add that fact to the excellent low light performance and suddenly there's a lot to like. Note also that the price of this body has come down quite a bit from its first year or so and now you really do have something to pay attention to. Also, it's the only full frame with the fully articulating screen, so if that's something useful to you then this choice is better still. If you haven't had the pleasure of using the articulating screen, you ought to try it. Amazing when you're shooting a very low or high angle and also great on a tripod. Put the screen where you can comfortably see it, switch into live view and enjoy dual pixel touch screen focus precision. This camera gets a bad rap for a few shortcomings it has, but that just creates opportunity for buyers who are able to adapt their shooting style to take advantage of the great things about this camera.
Great video as always! It would've been cool if you shot every review on the actual camera model you review.
Very nice review, fair, balanced, and I love the photo comparisons with the other cameras!
You could have a d750 + Sigma Arts Prime for nearly the same money. It shows once again Canon is more interested market segmentation than anything else
Canon needs a total shakeup, I don't get what the logic is with their camera lineup. They're voluntarily giving up the prosumer and even some pro market share to Sony.
@ ARXV Photo... That's almost complete rubbish! That's exactly right -- you DON'T get it. Bigtime. Cite your EVIDENCE, please... if you can (you can't). Canon has EXPANDED their market share lead over Nikon for the last 5 years, are moving rapidly into #2 market share in MILCs worldwide, and show no meaningful sign of having cannibalized their con$umer DSLR bu$iness in the proce$$. Go ahead, sir, PREDICT where Canon is going to land financially when their contemporary strategy has played out more in, say, five years. That's what THEY think about.
Do you understand that Canon is a big corporation whose ~ 17% of revenue from the camera-lenses' division is primarily about profit, not stirring the loins of camera forum 'internet experts'? Do you ever read about this industry and Canon's place in it in the financial pages? Are you qualified as a businessman or capital investor to make the **broad generalizations** you made credibly? You know what my provisional opinion of that is.
Just to be very clear, via some measure of redundancy: It's about THE ENTIRE DIVISION'S 'BOTTOM LINE', now, and going forward.
Frederick J. Ok so what you're saying is… you still shoot Canon? Lol.
6D 2 is pretty bad ass, now the it can be had for $1699....
The best camera reviews, period and in every way. Production, personality, content, unbiased and just plain sexy too!
I wanna ask for some opinions, i am a 60D user, what do you guys think if i upgrade to 6d mark ii for video / short film?
Who is this camera for? No one , it is strictly to steer you to a 5d mkiv.
I fucking love Chris I could watch his pretty lookin' ass reviewing camera gear all day (no homo)
Hi sir. Is canon 6D mark ii no firmware update ? No one talk about it . I just bought it so I really curious . 90D just came out and it already updated firmware. Why ?
Thanks for the explanation. What kind of camrecorder do you use to record this video?
Canon..." have you seen our Cine line?"
Puppet Master Yeah their entry level C100 mkii is $7000 AUD and still doesn't shoot 4K. Canon is cynically counting on the fact that their existing user base has made an investment in Canon lenses and is therefore hesitant to switch brands. The thing about this is Canon think they can serve a camera which is clearly inferior to its 3 year old nearest competitor. Here in Oz the 6d mkii is $2700 body only. I can get a Sony A7 ii and metabones adapter and still have change. The Sony will give me IBIS, better video, and better DR.
Canon, Nikon : *Dinosaurs*

Sony, Fuji, Panny, Oly : *Mammals*

I'm a Lumix fanboy, but I'll admit only one of those brands is really competing with Canikon and that's Sony. Olympus said themselves that the Em1 Mk II was aimed at existing users (duh, great way to grow the market), and it's release was overshadowed by the GH5. Speaking of which, it's a big seller for Panasonic, but still a drop in the ocean when it comes to markets share.

Be optimistic, Oly finally making profit (2016)
after 7 years in a row losing profit.
Thanks for the help from Sony,
_(stocks buying & tech injection)_
And oly still famous for making gorgeous camera.
That's a great way to be thinking about it
i want a camera with a faster auto focus and great in low light and i'm happy. i take wonderful pictures but i have to ask you this question do you use auto focus or manual mode when you're taking your pictures? and since it's a full frame camera which lens do you use for your camera i like what i see i wanted the canon 6d but somebody said the mark 2 is the better one
Would you say the video is better then a 60D ? and comparing to the Canon G30 would it be under that? thanks
