- Here is an extract from The Drifters Masquerade DVD, released in 2013 by Bomark Studios. This particular track was given the retro treatment (The complete DVD is in colour) We thought it would be fun to edit and produce this in black and white.

Most anyone knows the story of the Drifters. There were several other groups called the Drifters (on Coral, Crown, etc.) prior to and during Clyde's reign with the real Drifters, but it is what it is. I give these guys credit for having the lead do a good impression of Johnny Moore, the lead singer on the record and the harmony is also right there. The band's guitarist copies Mickey Baker's part and the sax player does the same thing with original (Sam Taylor?) sax player - we did this sonf as a part of our vocal harmony group and band. NOT the Drifters in any way shape or form, but "A" for effort in copying the real deal. I wish they wouldn't use the name.
But it's the name that brings in the crowds.

@@JukeboxBalowski- Clyde went into the Military for 2 years and when he returned, he went solo and practically nowhere. He had a couple of hits notably "Lover's Question" on Atlantic and "Lover Please" on Mercury, but his sound didn't translate into the grittier soul sounds of the 1960's and by 1970 he was broke and forgotten. The Dells on the other hand maintained their original singers for five (5) decades and evolved with the music. After listening to this again, I'm moved by the lead (not Johnny Moore) but real close. The harmony this time around is too mellow, not hard enough like the original. The name was owned by George Treadwell, Manager of the second and third interations of the "Drifter's" group. He fired them all and replaced the group with Ben E. King and his group the Five Crowns. The rest is history as this is the line up that gave us those late 1950's and early to mid 1960's classics. The name may bring in crowds for some people, but this is nothing but a tribute band. Sorry, but if there is not an original lead or at least an original member, the name Drifters doesn't matter. Yeah I'm a music producer, musician, label owner and been in the business of music and the music business (they're not the same) for nearly 5 decades myself.

@@gillblowey- the original Drifters were Clyde McPhatter, Bill Pinkney, Andrew Thrasher and Gerhart Thrasher from early 1953 until Clyde left for the Military in late 1954. The second lead was Johnny Moore with remaining members in place. Singers in the video are "pretenders" or call them a "tribute" Drifters group. Bill Pinkney was the last surviving member who passed in 2007. If these "Drifters" are official, then I assume they have permission from PRISM Music Group and Tina Treadwell for the use of the name. Her father, George Treadwell trademarked the name and PRISM and Tina own the name rights.

I do know who the orignal drifters were .and yes these guys did have permission .sadly they are no longer drifters .i wont go into why .i know what im talking about .
Who are these guys? I don't see Charley Thomas , Bill Pinckny, Johnny Moore and Rudy Lewis are all dead and I don't see Ben E. King anywhere in the lineup. These young guys are not the Drifters.

Im not 100% sure but i think the lead singer is Michael Williams and if what I read is right the drifters were formed to be a back up group for Clyde Mcphatter and so the name is owned by a guy named George Treadwell and throughout the years there have been many reincarnations of the drifters because Treadwell still owns the rights and the name drifters so he (maybe now his son) are still trying to make money off of it so these guys aren't technically The Drifters they are more of a splinter group but the rights/name is still owned by the same guy
+diamondsword12 Ben E King recently passed away leaving Charlie Thomas as the last guy alive to have ties to the Drifters. Your statements are true about Treadwell but I know he is dead and I don't think any heirs of his own any rights to the Drifters name. The guys in this video are too young to even remember the Drifter's songs.

@@edwardpendarvis1170 Although he was the original lead singer on Fools Fall In Love this is not Johnny Moore but it is a good imitation. According to the notes this was released in 2013, I don't know when it was recorded but Johnny passed away in 1998.
@@jimpassa1 I was asking if the original was Johnny Moore. This guy is okay but not as good as Moore. The discography on the early Drifters is sketchy at best. Bill Pinckney was clear about Clyde on the White Christmas recording. The different leads from Clyde to Johnny Moore to Ben E. King are muddled. I have several reference books and they are less than definitive regarding personnel and leads. Thanks for your input.
@@edwardpendarvis1170 In my opinion Johnny Moore was the best. Yes, this guy is OK but nobody can touch Johnny Moore. I had the pleasure of meeting him many years ago just before he moved his Drifters to England. I have been a Drifters fan since I started buying records in 1954. Adorable (Johnny Moore) and Lucille (Clyde McPhatter) are the first two recordings I bought by them. At 81, I'm still;;a fan of the original group but not so much as the later (Ben E. King) group. They were OK but they were not the Drifters I knew.

It is not the original Drifters and it has been edited back in 2011, I believe.
It’s not a rip off as you say, it’s a presentation, and was commissioned by the Treadwell family and Sony and PMG music group.
