BILLY JOEL - Big Shot REACTION - First time hearing

My favourite Joel song. Love that New York ethnic touch. Great song. Thanks for the reaction.
An underrated song from the album this song was on is "Zanzibar"--it changes directions and briefly goes into a jazzy solo. Well worth a reaction.
Da kidz have recently discovered that song on TikTok and created their own dance for it.
The solo was by Freddie Hubbard, one of the best trumpeters ever.
Ha ha! Played that song 12 hours ago in a bar!
Zanzibar is my favorite Joel song.
I never get tired of listening to Billy Joel.
This was the opening track of the 52nd Street album, Billy's follow up to The Stranger album. The album is as close to perfect as you can get. Every song is a killer. If you've never heard it, you owe to yourself to do so.
they toured together, wish i could have seen it, you cant really say one opened for the other. they are both legends
His music catalog is wide and vast....he has 33 Top 40 hits...his live shows are a marathon...
When I was very young, my parents went to "The Piano Man" tour I think, it was a set-up with dualing pianos across the stage with Elton John and Billy Joel working together. They said it was the greatest show they had ever seen, and they saw all of the classic rock greats through the years so that is high praise.
They called it Face to Face.
I saw that tour, as well. When they came through Atlanta.
@@jamishops Aha! Awesome. I wish I had been old enough to attend, I was around 9 I think.
@@jamishops In 2004 the concert with the Billy Joel and Elton John in Memphis, TN they called the "Deuling Pianos Tour"" and they played each others songs as well as together. Billy ended the concert with 'Piano Man' as his solo.
@@jmcquown not sure about 2004, but in 1994, 2001 and 2003 they were called Face to Face tours.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Face_to_Face_1994
The song is superficially about the protagonist mocking a woman with a severe hangover for her intoxicated escapades around town, making numerous social and verbal faux pas while high on alcohol and drugs ("But now you just don't remember all the things you said / And you're not sure you want to know / I'll give you one hint, honey; you sure did put on a show!"). The song makes reference to late 1970s nouveau riche fads such as Elaine's restaurant and Halston. During a Q&A session at Florida State University in 1996, Joel stated the song is about someone he was very close to, and also about himself. In an interview in 2006, Joel said, "I read that the song 'Big Shot' is said to be about a date I had with Bianca Jagger. I never had a date with Bianca Jagger." But in an interview with Howard Stern on November 16, 2010, Joel said the song was written after having dinner with Mick and Bianca Jagger. Joel told Stern that while writing the lyrics to "Big Shot," he was thinking of Mick singing the song to Bianca.
Another version: This song is definately, exactly as the lyrics state. he went out drinking with friends. he was tying to impress everyone with how much he drank. he woke up the next morning feeling like shit and looked himself in the mirror and thought "you had to be a big shot and drink that much." I heard Billy Joel say in an interview that he woke up hungover the next day, remembering what an ass he made of himself the night before and stared in the mirror and said "You had to be a big shot, didn't you!"
Yes I have heard him attribute it to himself but perhaps he was just covering for the jaggers and the newsworthiness.
I heard that interview too.
I thought I remembered it was about his ex wife 🤔
@Sally Hallada You misremembered!😃
@@loadedorygun wow, y'all know ur stuff in music!
Elton John's 1st album was released in 1969. Billy Joel's 1st album was released in 1971. However, just prior, Billy was in a band Attila from 1969-1970. They recorded 1 album. So, Billy and Elton were basically contemporaries.
It is reported that he wrote the song after an evening with Mick and Bianca Jagger and he imagined Mick singing the song to her. LOL.
It’s a fantastic story 😆
Billy wrote this song about Bianca Jagger, after Mick described her Studio 54 behavior to him over a lunch conversation once. Reportedly Mick loved it.
Harri it’s about time you did a whole Billy Joel album I suggest 52nd street with a jazz influence, also check out live concerts of his
seen Billy and Elton together once in celmson sc rode there in a limo they showed out great showplace seen Elton with Leon Russell once fantastic aloha
The song has a very Italian-American New York City attitude.
Love Billy Joel. Such a great song. Always amazing. I always think the women's version would be Carly Simon "Your So Vain". Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Jamie. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I’m so glad Jami A loves Billy Joel as much as I do! Thanks for your great requests! Nice reaction Harri 🌺✌️
Another great song from Billy Joel is "Get It Right The First Time" (1977).
I’ve heard him say he was thinking of Mick Jagger when he was singing this. I can certainly hear a Mick Jagger sound to it in places. I can hear an Elton style to the piano though. I don’t think it was written about any one person, but just experiences and even thinking it about himself when looking in the mirror the next morning.
Not Mick. It’s about the wife, Bianca. “They were all impressed with your Halston dress”
This was written about micks ex wife from micks point of view
You should see the Official video to this!
Check out Allentown from Billy
I’m telling ya Billy Joel Allentown great music video
Right, its similar to Benny and the Jet's by, E.J, i think he's referring to, supermodel, and ex wife, Christy Brinkley, i could be wrong though. Hey great vid, brother! 🥴
Great reaction to one of my favorites from back in the day. Singing this along with the radio in the car, yes!
Saw Billy with Elton on tour.
Excellent concert!! 🤩🥳
Think they may have influenced one another, both very successful.
I do love this one Harri, thanks. 👍🏽❤
I remember listening to this song - over and over in the late 70s.. he was so big then with is album 52nd Street. Honesty was my fav from this album. Thanks for posting.. good memories!
If you're thinking Christie Brinkley, no dice. He wrote this one 5 years before he met her.
Fun Fact, Billy and Elton popped up at the same time and neither had any idea who the other was. Match made in heaven? i think so fam.
Elton and Billy were coming up together - both are unbelievable did they copy each other? maybe we are blessed to have both
Harri, yet another great review. I am living on 100% disability and really wish I could join your Patreon family but $1300 a month is so very tight. Billy Joel has an AMAZING hidden gem called "Downeaster Alexa" about the collapse of the once profitable northeastern U.S. fishing trade. It is beautiful, it is poetic, it really makes you feel like you and Billy are right there on the boat with the crew, most of all it is heart rending...
P.S. I definitely hear the early Elton John in the song. Great call.
He did Downeaster Alexa already. One of my favs.
Billy Joel wrote many songs in the styles of musicians he admires
Love it!!! So hilarious!! Billy Joel is the bomb!
Yeah! That guitar at the end (Steve Khan--often plays with Steely Dan, and the Brecker Bros.) is so raw! "Big Shot" does sound somewhat like Elton John. I bet he was a big influence on Billy Joel. "Zanzibar" from this same album, is another knockout track, too.
Yes! There is a reflection of Elton John in this, definitely!!!
You’d love the energy from his song “Pressure” which gives the vibes of this song in that it’s catchy in the same sort of way!
He did a Pressure reaction.
@@jamishops - oh thanks- I’ll check that out!
Once heard him say in an interview the song was about himself funny
Good call Harri, it IS very Elton John-esque in parts; I never thought about it, but it totally is.
Great Billy Joel songs seem unending glad you enjoy them so much love to watch love you
Hari you need to do more tunes from that 52nd Street album. It is an epic album.
About his night out with a certain couple, Bianca and Mick Jagger. Check out his dancing in the video 😂
It's about Bianca Jagger.
Harri, please react to one of my favourite BJ songs, The Entertainer. Nobody else has done it and it is, in my humble opinion, one of his best.
I requested it. Should be coming this month. I love. that song too. Billy has been doing it a lot in recent concerts so there are a lot of recent videos from concerts if you haven’t seen him do it recently
The Stranger is one of my favorite albums of all time, saw the backing concert for The Stranger at Ohio University in 1977
Great audio. All I saw on the video was seagulls flying around. Those birds must be really talented to play that music!
He has said that he wrote it about himself.
I wish you had more subscribers and views. I always look forward to new reactions and videos from you - I love your perspective. It is always a highlight to see your very handsome face and hear your beautiful accent. I wish you a wonderful weekend and blessings and happiness always. This song was on the radio all the time back when it came out - loved it and still do (though nothing exploded on the radio like My Life - especially after it became the theme to Tom Hanks/Peter Scolari's Bosom Buddies. While The Stranger is my favorite album of his, I do love 52nd Street! Love Zanzibar the best I think. There isn't a bad song on either of these albums!
Listen to Keepin' The Faith for me great horn work.
The whole Billy Joel catalogue is worth a listen! ANNNND so is Dan Fogleberg's Netherlands album. Starting with the Title cut.
It's about Mick Jagger's then-wife, Bianca Jagger.
You should do "Allentown" you know.
On the album it is a fadeout. The uploader cut it off.
You should see the music video!! You’ll love it!!
Billy and Elton have toured together, I saw them in Toronto!! fantastic
Face to Face tour. Was phenomenal
as an upstate New Yorker, i have to point out a minor and irrelevant spelling error. He doesn't said "Didn't you?" is says a very New Yorker word, "Did'ya?"
My dad was from upstate New York, I think it is more like did ja?
Good album. Great depth on vinyl.
I heard it many times, I never really listened to the lyrics before, but I could swear he's singing about my ex-wife 😂
Cmq Pano Man sempre meglio dal vivo .... Talento 🎹👏
When I 1st heard this I thought it was Paul McCartney for some reason. I can't hear that now.
Long time ago, I heard a college acquaintance playing this record for his mother, and her response was, "Well, that's just West Side Story." So, Leonard Bernstein as another influence?
I heard it was about Bianca Jagger, as seen through Mick’ eyes.
listen to running on ice
He said he wrote it about himself
This was the long version, Harri(it's a 4 minute song, the 45 version was about 3:33)
same album Stiletto !
He was singing about his former wife, Christy Brinkley. Elton and Billy used to tour together.
This came out before he knew Christy
Not about her at all. This recorded way before he knew her.
@@rodneygriffin7666 I stand corrected.
I remember it was about 1st ex wife 🤔
A great song that depicts that era of overdoing things back in the mid to late 1970’s.
Referring to a well known model with blonde hair... ??? lol I think yes...
He wrote this years before he met Christie and they are still good friends, so doubtful.
Couldn’t have too much Elton John influence, maybe Elton and Bernie, they could only write half the song each!
I've heard he was scolding himself the night after he had a little too much to drink.
