I think the story behind this is that this was loosely about Mick Jagger's wife at the time 😄 In any case, CBS is (re)airing his 100th residency concert at MSG this Friday (April 19) and it's on Paramount+ if you have that. I highly recommend watching it, even on your own time.

Billy Joel's lyrics: there aren't many who compare in this storytelling type of style, maybe Warren Zevon, Randy Newman, Elton John/Bernie Taupin, a few more. Best part is he put out 12 albums between 1971 and 1993 so you got plenty to check out. He was my first favorite artist as a kid in the 1980s followed by INXS and a couple others

Early 1990s - went and saw Billy Joel (because he was on tour with Elton John). I went to see Elton specifically, left Asa bigger fan of Billy Joel. Dude is a very good showman (early 90s), and this portion was a “happy concert party”.

Billy Joel absolutely is a showman. On top of writing all his own songs and being a phenomenal musician he's also a fantastic performer. Really recommend checking out some early live performances of this song particularly because they're so fun to watch. He just does whatever he feels like in the moment for this song and the feral energy is off the charts. Definitely suits the vibe of the song and it's lyrics.

Rumor has it the Billy Joel used to buy the front row tickets and then he would call the back road down to sit in the front row. Times have changed my friend I live in Niagara Falls and when he played here it was $5,000 for the first row, good thing Billy and Swift don't tour together it would be all the rich people on their phones

Produced by the late Phil Ramone, RIP. Written by Billy Joel. Howard Stern asked him who the Big Shot is. She is Bianca Jagger, then wife of Sir Mick Jagger. Billy Joel imagined Mick singing this to Bianca.
Big Shot is the 1st song from the 1978 album 52nd Street. The 2nd song is Honesty. The 3rd is My Life. Those were the big hits. The rest of the songs were fillers.

This song is from the late '70s. It's not really an '80s song. The "57th Street" album was released in '78. Billy's lyrics here, and his vocal delivery in this song, may have had some *influence* on hip-hop in the '80s, but this song predated '80s hip-hop.

Dom Perignon is a fancy brand, meaning expensive, champagne. In the seventies when you went to party classy that’s what you drank. Hence showing off with your Dom Perignon and the spoon up your nose was the height of show off partying and pretty much just throwing your money around. Then you wake up in the morning wiped and whipped but it’s your fault don’t come crying to me. Truly a great song.

Little did we know back in the 70's that pop music would arguably peak in that decade. The 70's is when performers were also their own songwriters which created so much unique music. Fast forward to today and most of what you hear in pop music is written by dedicated professional songwriters to be performed by pretty people (meaning Billy wouldn't have stood a chance), with audio tracks that are (over)produced in the studio by talented engineers. Consuming music only written by songwriters means you'll never move forward because they're simply rehashing what's already been done and proven to sell. Imagine a world without the Beatles, a band that started with "I Want To Hold Your Hand" to eventually writing "Eleanor Rigby". That writing progression only comes from performing musicians developing the art themselves and continually creating something NEW. Those days are gone, sadly. And if we let AI start writing future pop music, that'll definitely be the end of anything new.
