Thanks for the great review Sam. Just when I thought I was out of the Legendary game system... they pulled me back in! I think this probably a no-brainer for me. I must have it.
Excited for this game. I do have to say the frequent cuts in the video actually made the rules explanation really confusing at certain points. Just something to keep in mind in future videos.
I think this game is great. So fun and thematic. And I guess I'm in the minority, but while the art is not great, it's not the "experience killer" for me that it seems to be for others. The great design of the game overcomes the artwork for me!
The scanning process melds perfectly with Aliens, just about works with Predator but here it really feels like a square peg hammered into a round hole.
Hello Sam, I have a question for the Dice Tower : why don't you ask WTF with Firefly "Art" to Upper Deck when you meet them at conventions ? I'd like(and I won't be alone) to know what they would say.
Definitely the best encounter game around! The avatar powers and flaws Are very themetic and having Serenity as an extra character works really fine. Hands down the best legendary encounter game around. Hopefully we see expansions that Are using the released comic books!
Hey Sam, love the game reviews. Picked up quite a few on your recommendations and have largely enjoyed them. I've just started playing this game and had quite the opposite impression of the artwork. Could it just be that it is staying in character or theme of the show ? A lot of Firefly took place on a dark and broken down space ship and I think a lot of that comes across in the art. Let's be honest, the show was a broken down wagon train ride across the universe. While I get your point about the Marvel being so much more vivid, because the source material was that way ? I love deck builders, far more than I thought (who knew). They get very addictive and this one has been hitting all the right buttons for me. Including the artwork, in my opinion.
I loved this game... very fun and very thematic. :-) I completely agree about the art. I almost feel it is more about how the drawings were "inked," though. It seems like the art was shaded on a computer, instead of by hand. I could be wrong, of course. Anyway, I think the "inking" is where things seem to have gone horribly wrong. The art in the other Legendary games is definitely superior. I heard someone joke about how it is a strange world we live in when the ICP game's art is nicer than the Legendary Encounters Firefly game's art. heh I still do think that the Alien one is my favorite, but that is mainly because of the theme. :-)
The other main characters just stay on the board. Some cards' abilities will work if x character is a main character. I think they did this so that all 9 characters are being used in some way.
They need to reprint this entire set to redo the graphics. If it wasn't so many cards I would pull images from the Internet using the show, movie, or Comic book screen grabs. As these would be a million times better than the art they used. And I have seen the Avatar cards posted and if these are the best cards that is bad as most of them don't even come close to the people they are to represent except in their clothing.
As a Firefly fan the art is simply so poor that I can't enjoy the gaming experience without constantly railing against art image atrocity. Sad this would be an auto include in my collection, instead its a sad regret non purchase.
The art is so painful that I can't bring myself to buy the game. It's unfortunate because this would've been an insta-buy. But at $68 CAD.....just can't do it.
The Artwork looks like it's been done by a multitude of different artists. Characters don't even look alike on various cards. It's is beyond me how any publisher would greenlight this mess.
Well I would put big " " to the word artists...I love the game even with this f.... "art".... at the end you don't give a damn to it, you're just wishing Serenity won't blown up :-)
This really intrigues me, It feels like more of a different implementation to "Legendary Encounters" than Predator was. The artwork is unforgivable though, sorry. I've seen some stills and boy it looks like they forgot the details in many of the cards and shipped it out early by mistake. 2010 Ascension(first Edition not newest) has better artwork...ouch. Aside from it, I may look past it because it does look interesting , but I don't think I can fit another Legendary game in my collection(Already own Marvel w/ all expansions, Alien, and Predator), let alone another deck builder. Also I've yet to see the show its based on, so I'd be lost as all get out. Still, great review Sam
I was going to purchase this game until I saw the artwork (posted on Facebook, more posted on BBG). Some cards are actually quite nice, but too many are bad. They're also terribly inconsistent - was there no art director? I love Firefly and was really looking forward to this, but I'm afraid that I'd get so mad everytime I looked at the artwork that it would take me out of the game. I just don't think that it's too much to ask for both good gameplay *and* good art. (Or at the least, not *bad* art). I inadvertantly hurt one of the artist's feelings because my comment on Facebook was "blech", but after even more of the artwork I have to stand by my original comment. Artwork: Blech. One day I might get this - if the game goes on clearance.
The artwork on this game is unbelievably horrific and uneven. Huge Firefly fan insta-buy utterly and sadly lost :/ How this even made it past *one* tester with functioning eyes who had seen the source material is completely baffling.
I was so excited for this game, then i saw the art especially the strike deck and the art is bad enough to kill my enjoyment of the game...and this is weird since the art on the other encounter game are spectacular
This was the game I've been waiting for but now I'm not sure. sounds overly complex and the art is just a massive disappointment. screen grabs would have been so easy to do why go for the substandard artwork?
I was super hyped for this game, definitely going to buy it, until I saw the art. I can get past bad art, but this is some of the worst art I've ever seen.
I don't feel the need to apologize that i can't do better art. Because i'm not an artist and this is not my job. And i'm doing what i'm good at. So, these "artists" should quit their job. Period. Upper deck should not get away with such poor execution either. It feels like there will be second printing of this (like with VS System).
Sorry, but the game is WAY too flawed even at the most basic level for any kind of enjoyment. Right from the start, my entire gaming group had a bad taste in their mouths. "Oh cool, I wanna play Jayne!" "Great, take his deck of cards and shove them up your ass!" "Uhh.. what?" Sadly, thats how the game goes. Taking the character you WANT to play.. removes that character from the game's "Deck", and leaves you with a bunch of crap cards nobody wants. To make matters worse, we tried the game 3 times, and all 3 games, we ended up with cards that cost 7 and 8 in every space on the bridge... and all of us had like... 4 or 5 gold a turn to spend. Leaving us frustratingly stuck with nothing to combat the dangers of the Verse endlessly piling up. Leading to eventual failure. There was no enjoyment. There was no fun. Just an endless slog of Verse cards endlessly piling up. We played with 3 people, and none of us could see how it would be fun with 5.. as that meant 5 Verse cards would drop before you even got a second turn.. and the episode decks have like.. 10-15 cards. So 3 turns, and it's game over.. with nothing in your deck. This is poorly executed, poorly designed trash. We had MUCH more fun and excitement playing Hero Realms.
The not playing the character you choose mechanic really annoys me as well. It would be OK if the character talents were more powerful, but when I played they seems secondary. It seems like it can easilly be house ruled though, pick the characters you don't want to play and have the talents as supporting characters. I love firefly and I love the play mat and having the characters and ship. The artwork doesn't bother me too much but I agree that it's not the best. My wife summed it up as "this is like Pathfinder card game but with less stuff" and I think that's spot on.
Sam always looks so serious when he's playing games during the gaming marathons. It's great to see him really happy about this game. :)
Thanks for the great review Sam. Just when I thought I was out of the Legendary game system... they pulled me back in! I think this probably a no-brainer for me. I must have it.

Great review Sam, can really feel you getting more comfortable in front of the camera. Keep it up!
I think this game is great. So fun and thematic. And I guess I'm in the minority, but while the art is not great, it's not the "experience killer" for me that it seems to be for others. The great design of the game overcomes the artwork for me!
I love the show, a lot, and heard all the gripes about the art. I didn’t mind the art. The game is great!
Loved this game! So challenging, thematic, and fun! I agree about the artwork, so sad.
Helpful review - thank you!
Even with the generally poor character renderings, I still enjoy this game tremendously, enough so to overlook that issue.
The scanning process melds perfectly with Aliens, just about works with Predator but here it really feels like a square peg hammered into a round hole.

That shirt is awesome!
Do you only play 3 episodes, because the show is cancelled after that? :P
Too soon ... Always too soon ...
Great review! I was considering but might try one of the other Legendary games first since the artwork would probably annoy me.
Definitely the best encounter game around! The avatar powers and flaws Are very themetic and having Serenity as an extra character works really fine. Hands down the best legendary encounter game around. Hopefully we see expansions that Are using the released comic books!

What do the non-player main characters do? Are they just out of the game or does someone play for them?
The other main characters just stay on the board. Some cards' abilities will work if x character is a main character. I think they did this so that all 9 characters are being used in some way.
Sounds like the systems and mechanisms are solid and fun. The art is a bummer though. I'll pick this up once it drops in price a little.
Love the shirt!!!!

Would love to see a real playthrough!

Yeah i was ready to throw all my money at this and then saw the artwork and said "nevermind"

$59.95 in Canada....boardgamebliss or 401games

Sounds like a great game torpedoed by bad art. Glad you can look past it, but after seeing the images on BGG I don’t think I could.

They lost me when they use Serenity as the image on the attack card. It's a gorram transport ship without weapons!
I was going to purchase this game until I saw the artwork (posted on Facebook, more posted on BBG). Some cards are actually quite nice, but too many are bad. The best encounters game is still Aliens.
The artwork on this game is unbelievably horrific and uneven. Huge Firefly fan insta-buy utterly and sadly lost :/ How this even made it past *one* tester with functioning eyes who had seen the source material is completely baffling.

This game has some of the worst art I've ever seen in a board game. Kinda ruins the thematic experience. This one is a definite pass for me.
Terraforming Mars and The Castles of Burgundy say Hi.
@@danielgallagher8713 But those two games don't depend on the art being good. Firefly kind of does.
This game is good even without art! Very good and thematic game!
I lasted 2 minutes of this review.i can't force myself to even go through the trouble of setting this up.
The alliance ship is too damn strong in the first episode. 10 attack (plus 2 with a ship strike i drew) it raped Serenity within 3 turns.
Losing repeatedly in Legendary Alien Encounters turned my wife off to the game. I really enjoyed the game but the difficulty is not good for my group.
This was the game I've been waiting for but now I'm not sure. sounds overly complex and the art is just a massive disappointment. screen grabs would have been so easy to do why go for the substandard artwork?
