    Local musicians in New Orleans, including Tuba Skinny, have not been able to busk on Royal Street since 2019. Busking is a long time tradition in New Orleans. And it is important to the culture of the city and is important to the bands to expose their talent to the public and tips earned on the street are a significant source of income. Please sign the petition below to encourage the City of New Orleans to return Royal Street to a pedestrian mall open to busking musicians.

    Very entertaining to follow Barnabus through any tune.......He comes up with great fills and melodies as the three of them are playing.....The same can be said for Todd.......Tightest band out there........................

      @@PopsCoffee Well, first, congratulations on your longevity. I just had a close encounter (two weeks post heart attack), but will recover 100% thankfully. I grew up here and as a child recall reading Emily Dickinson in the living room with my mother. Hers were the first poems I memorized (“Heart, we will forget him . . . .”). They recently renovated the Museum. I need to go again this spring. Have you looked on line to see if there is a virtual tour? If not, let me know and I will see if I can walk through it taking a video. Lol. Really.
      Be well.

      Thanks; and I'm so pleased you share my enthusiasm for Emily. I first discovered her poetry in my local library in about 1955 and have been an admirer ever since. There are some good 'Homestead' videos on RUclips but if you ever get round to making another, I would certainly watch it. Best wishes for continuing good health.

    Many thanks, James. What a lovely comfortable tempo for this tune, which is sometimes rushed by other bands. A fine performance all round, with the highlights for me being the unpretentious solos on Theme C (the Trio) by Craig at 01:46 and Barnabus at 02:06, Max at 03:17 and Todd at 03:39, and especially Shaye at 02:31. By the way, the 'Ole Miss' of the title was the train that used to run from Memphis to New Orleans. Tuba Skinny, like most bands, play only Theme A (at 00:02 - 00:31 and again [following the usual hand-on-head signal from Shaye] at 01:17 - 01:45) and at all other times Theme C (The Trio), missing out Theme B. And they stick in the key of F, whereas the original sheet music includes a Theme B and a key change into B flat for the Trio. You, James, made a video of The Shotgun Jazz Band playing the full version with all three themes: ruclips.net/video/0LQ0J5UwK78/видео.html ; and The Shotgun Jazz Band included this tune in the 'correct' version on their CD (entitled 'Stepping on The Gas') early in 2017. Anyone wishing to see the original sheet music can find it at playing-traditional-jazz.blogspot.com/2017/04/post-498-ole-miss-rag-played-properly.html .

    I wish I knew more about all of this . . . I only know I love it. But, I am so curious to know what “liberties” the musicians take when covering another artist . . . Or what all Shaye’s nods and glances mean. Etc.

    • @JamesSterling
      @JamesSterling  2 года назад +5

      Tuba Skinny is usually pretty true to the original artists version when they cover a song. When Shaye leans, points, or nods to a particular player she is signaling for him to take the next solo. As for the other various signals Shaye uses see this: playing-traditional-jazz.blogspot.com/search?q=shaye+cohn+signals
