Simple question but why is nobody asking for reparations from the people that actually enslaved these people and sold them into the slave trade, I find it strange that this is never mentioned and black African Americans seem to just accept and are even proud of their African brothers whose ancestors enslaved them in the first place, It is odd when you think about it particularly with the amount of hatred towards whites for simply being white. Reparations are not going to happen. Floating it like it’s actual idea only serves to make more than half the country mad, and makes them turn off to hearing any other requests or arguments. The American dollar isn't backed by the gold standard any more, it's based on housing mortgages. They're getting dealt like stocks on the American stock market, another financial concept that should never have become a reality. The ever widening economic gap will continue to grow ever wider unless and until the wealthy cease to be able to use their wealth as political power to write the economic laws and commerce rules that keep that our corrupted capitalism self serving for the rich.

The first question should be, we're slaves owed repairations for their enslavement. If the answer is yes and they never received it, then that compensation should be made to their descendents. If not, then please explain why.

If we held previous generations accountable for all atrocities against all people, not many societies would be free from debt. As far as equity, both of my parents' families were immigrants in the early 1900s. My wife's family was mostly from Germany and arrived between the mid 1600s and 1900. Some were indentured servants in the slums of NY. None had anything to do with slavery. Some of her relatives also died in the Civil War - fighting for the North. Why should any of my taxes or my children's taxes go to pay for repirations, when we had nothing whatsoever to do with it and even lost family to help end the worst of the atrocities towards Black people? What about people of color who immigrated here after the fact? Does an immigrant from Upper Volta get reparations? If we go back to Native Americans, the Lakota killed off most of the Pawnee... should members of the Lakota tribe be found to pay reparatoins to the ancestors of the Pawnee tribe?

The hustle is in the question. Though I believe you can, one doesn't have to go back to slavery to make the case for reparations. This is a nice thought, but slavery as servitude, whether bilaterally supported or not, has been an economic institution for centuries. Before industrialization, it would be impossible for massive civilizations to become what they were without the use of mass labor.
I'm starting to support reparations. Let's decide on an amount. So first on the list is the African tribes who enslaved them. Than, we go to the slave traders in Africa. Than the European traders who bought them. If the bill isn't met by than, we go after the family of Anthony Johnson. He fought and won to change slaves from indentured servants to slaves. Than we can go after the families of the owners. After that, we subtract the money the US spent on Liberia. Than the rest of us can cover what's left over.

Second, the reparations paid by the USA to Japanese Americans so held in custody were for those who were in actual Fed custody NOT their surviving relatives or their descendants. Hughes gets that a bit wrong too because he said their families got compensated as well which is also wrong....ONLY those who were actually in custody in a USA concentration camp under EO 9066 got Fed $$ compensation for it. BTW that $$ payment for Japanese Americans who qualified was far far far lower than anything that has been suggested for DOS. I beleive average payment was 20k not the millions suggested for DOS. Finally, Japanese Americans often said the $$ was irrelevant. What they wanted was an apology and to clear away any hint that they were disloyal. They got that. Would black folks be satifiieded with an apolgoy? No way.

We're a democracy, majority rules.... The US is a country made up of former immigrants, slaves, and a few aboriginals. Most of the ancestral slave population was brought over by the British, the easiest evidence to this is that African-American people overwhelmingly have British last names. You don't see German, Italian, Polish, etc. as last names of African-Americans because they came over AFTER the slave trade was shut down and people were emancipated. I'm German/Irish in background, and my ancestors came here dirt poor in 1883. They weren't part of slavery, there was no white privilege for foreign immigrants (only discrimination), and whatever advantages I have today are a direct result of their hard work to raise themselves out of the gutter of inner-city ethnic neighborhoods. I'm not interested in paying this, I have NO links to slavery in any capacity....none.

So for the 150 years being too old argument and payments being made only to the individual that was wronged...In 2016 when Native Americans received reparations for mismanagement of tribal lands, it was for land agreements that dated back to the 1800s. Slavery did not end in 1865. The Civil War ended that year. Slavery is and was the complete dehumanization of Black and Native people which included dismissing all of their culture, consciousness, and autonomy as human beings. That process continues to this day, in altered formats with similar effect.
It is not just slavery alone and it was not just plantation owners it was sanctioned by every entity of American society and political legislation Jim Crow Redlining black wall street mass incarceration it's beyond slavery but you can start there but don't try to limit it to slavery.

Fun fact: only 8-10% of black Americans have slave ancestors the rest came after slavery was ended. Only 3% of America owned slaves out of that 3% over 7,000 slave owners where black. Businesses have "unions" (though, generally they oppose for workers) ... it's just that business "unions" are called "trade associations" instead. This includes financial institutions. Banks, that get money from the supposed government/private "partnership" of "the Fed" at a very nominal interest rate meet to CHOOSE to inflate their profit, gouging individual and business consumers and increasing the inflation.
Monopoly and near monopoly. The greediest of the wealthiest pursue monopoly because controlling supply enables the control of pricing.
The ever widening economic gap will continue to grow ever wider unless and until the wealthy cease to be able to use their wealth as political power to write the economic laws and commerce rules that keep that our corrupted capitalism self serving for the rich.
It's not just the cost of the house in reality. The real issue and the one everyone ought be angry about is the amortization scheme that applies to homes. The one thing we need most, scammed by the loan sharks. ...and the...gubment, let's it happen and encourages it for the sake of business and tax money.

If we held previous generations accountable for all atrocities against all people, not many societies would be free from debt. As far as equity, both of my parents' families were immigrants in the early 1900s. My wife's family was mostly from Germany and arrived between the mid 1600s and 1900. Some were indentured servants in the slums of NY. None had anything to do with slavery. Some of her relatives also died in the Civil War - fighting for the North. Why should any of my taxes or my children's taxes go to pay for repirations, when we had nothing whatsoever to do with it and even lost family to help end the worst of the atrocities towards Black people? What about people of color who immigrated here after the fact? Does an immigrant from Upper Volta get reparations? If we go back to Native Americans, the Lakota killed off most of the Pawnee... should members of the Lakota tribe be found to pay reparatoins to the ancestors of the Pawnee tribe?

That’s gonna get passed so fast like a budget bill. Kicking it down the line not addressing it now will force them to do it. You can bet on it.
Every other racial/ethnic group that have been victims of atrocities has been compensated for their pain. Why can't Black Americans? It's not BA fault that the government waited 1,000,000 years to address the issue.
The hustle is in the question. Though I believe you can, one doesn't have to go back to slavery to make the case for reparations. Just look at the constitutional violations in the 40's, 50', 60's that robbed Blacks of generational wealth, spawned the street gang culture that's pervasive in low-income Black neighborhoods, etc. All you have to do is read The Color of Law (also available as an audio book) to learn why reparations are deserved.

i would feel so embarrassed to ask the taxpayers of 2023 to give me their money because I had slaves in my background in the 1800s..or at any time for that matter! there are single women with children working just to feed their children! and you think you deserve their money? why again? because some slave from Africa didn't save his money to give it to you for your generational wealth?

This is a nice thought, but slavery as servitude, whether bilaterally supported or not, has been an economic institution for centuries. Before industrialization, it would be impossible for massive civilizations to become what they were without the use of mass labor.

I'm starting to support reparations. Let's decide on an amount. So first on the list is the African tribes who enslaved them. Than, we go to the slave traders in Africa. Than the European traders who bought them. If the bill isn't met by than, we go after the family of Anthony Johnson. He fought and won to change slaves from indentured servants to slaves. Than we can go after the families of the owners. After that, we subtract the money the US spent on Liberia. Than the rest of us can cover what's left over.

And you are a professor at Harvard? Second, the reparations paid by the USA to Japanese Americans so held in custody were for those who were in actual Fed custody NOT their surviving relatives or their descendants. Hughes gets that a bit wrong too because he said their families got compensated as well which is also wrong....ONLY those who were actually in custody in a USA concentration camp under EO 9066 got Fed $$ compensation for it. BTW that $$ payment for Japanese Americans who qualified was far far far lower than anything that has been suggested for DOS. I beleive average payment was 20k not the millions suggested for DOS. Finally, Japanese Americans often said the $$ was irrelevant. What they wanted was an apology and to clear away any hint that they were disloyal. They got that. Would black folks be satifiieded with an apolgoy? No way.

Example: If you created injury that killed my parents I can sue you for the impact to me. As such legal reparation. Also, the Japanese were not subject to 400 years of work without compensation and human rights violations. The matter of AA reparations is much more complicated.

We're a democracy, majority rules.... The US is a country made up of former immigrants, slaves, and a few aboriginals. Most of the ancestral slave population was brought over by the British, the easiest evidence to this is that African-American people overwhelmingly have British last names. You don't see German, Italian, Polish, etc. as last names of African-Americans because they came over AFTER the slave trade was shut down and people were emancipated. I'm German/Irish in background, and my ancestors came here dirt poor in 1883. They weren't part of slavery, there was no white privilege for foreign immigrants (only discrimination), and whatever advantages I have today are a direct result of their hard work to raise themselves out of the gutter of inner-city ethnic neighborhoods.

So for the 150 years being too old argument and payments being made only to the individual that was wronged...In 2016 when Native Americans received reparations for mismanagement of tribal lands, it was for land agreements that dated back to the 1800s. So just because he has never heard of it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. That's literally the weakest argument one can make.

Slavery did not end in 1865. The Civil War ended that year. Slavery is and was the complete dehumanization of Black and Native people which included dismissing all of their culture, consciousness, and autonomy as human beings. That process continues to this day, in altered formats with similar effect.
