This is a Russian ammo crate. The box front (0:12) reads: *7,62* = 7.62mm Bore. The acronyms are used to distinguish between 7.62x25mm Tokarev pistol ammo, 7.62x39mm M43 Soviet assault rifle ammo, and 7.62x54mmR M-91 Russian rifle ammo. It also tells what kind of ammo it is (Ball, Tracer, Armor-Piercing Incendiary, etc.). *ЛПС гж* (LPS gzh) stands for Legkaya Pulya Stal'noi - gilza zheleznaya > "Light Bullet, Steel Penetrator - Cartridge Case (made of) Tombak [Copper-Clad Steel]". LPS is a code letter designation for Semi-Armor-Piercing 7.62x54mmR M91 Russian rifle and machinegun ammo. Light Ball has an unpainted or white tip. It is considered Semi-Armor-Piercing because it contains a steel penetrator in its center. *880 Шт.* (SHt.) stands for штука (shtuka > "Pieces"), meaning the crate holds 880 rounds. The crate contains two hermetically-sealed oval sheetmetal "spam cans" that each hold 440 rounds (22 packets of 20 rounds). *П10-77-188* = Lot# P10 - Year ammo was produced and packed: 1977 - Factory 188 (Novosibirsk Low Voltage Equipment Plant). *BT 110/77 C* = Powder Type VT - Powder Batch 110 / Year of Production 1977 - Factory "S" (Simbirsk Powder Mill). The UN LOCODE is on the left-side beam on the lid. It is too faint and far-off to read. It would be something like the following: *4C2 / Y26 / S / 77 / RU OVB / NVS / ?* *4C2* = Box, Natural Wood, Removable Top [Nailed Lid]. *Y26* = Class Y / Can be used to transport Hazard Class II (Medium Hazard) and Class III (No or Low Hazard) materials; Maximum Weight of container: 26 kilograms. *S* = Solids only *77* = Manufactured in 1977. *RU OVB* = Country of Manufacture (Russian Federation, Novosibirsk Oblast) *NVS* = Subdivision (Novosibirsk) *Unknown* = Manufacturer's Code Number (Novosibirsk Low Voltage Equipment Plant) The UN classification (*UN 0012* ) would be stenciled or pasted on the box somewhere. *UN 0012* = Either "Small Arms Ammunition" or "Cartridges for Weapons, Inert Projectile [Non-Explosive Warhead]".
Everyone talks about the "Russian" (or other nationality) air escaping... If I'm not mistaken these cans are vacuum sealed and have no air in them anyway haha.
You are right on the money about SGAMMO. I used to buy tons of ammo from them when they worked out of their garage and sold off GunBroker. Very nice family and I would rather pay a little more to support a "mom & pop" shop then a retain chain. I am in Indiana and their prices were still cheaper than any store in central or southern Indiana. Than says a lot when ammo is very heavy and they still beat everyone on price. Thanks SGAMMO, and I will plae another order very soon today or Monday.
@aleos210 Cost $157 plus 20 shipping (which the crate weighs in at 59 pounds), so $177 total to my doorstep for 880 rounds. They also carry the individual spam cans for $73 for 440 rounds.
It isn't Russian air escaping. The idea of the spam can is that it is vacuum sealed allowing the ammo to be stored for long periods of time (the ammo your bought was manufactured in the 70's or 80's, check the case headstamp and it will tell you) without it getting all messed up from the elements. The sound you are hearing is air rushing inside the can from the outside.
Just ordered 880 rds 7.62x54R Russian military surplus ammo 1976 or 1977 production from factory 188 in Wood Crate today. Second time ordering from SGammo. Went and shot the remaining 220 rounds from my first order today hence the 880 rounds ordered today.
Yes Wolf, Tulaammo, Brown Bear, Privi Partizan and Herters make new ammo along with some others. Brown Bear has to be the closest to the original round. Tula ammo (Walmart etc) and Herters (cabelas) are nearly the same round with a polymer coating instead of laq like surplus ammo they are about 12 bucks for 20 rounds though. For know I would stick with the surplus try and find russian surplus though spam cans will have 7.62 NNCry with 188 plant and a paint strip indicating tip color from 70's.
A whole list of guns shoot the 7.62X54r ammo, DPM, Mosin, SVT-40, PKM MG and probably other mounted/ portable machine guns, its a testament to how powerful of a cartridge it is. You are lucky to have an SVT-40, I have noticed that over the years ammo and gun stocks have been going down and running dry. Back in 2009, I could get an SVT-40 for 1300-1500 bucks now they are over $2000 all day.
DUDE i love SGAmmo I just got my one can of 440 rounds of 54r plus a 50cal ammo can and they packed the ammo for me in the ammo can great customer service!
Just bought my first Nagant today, so here I am! Thanks for this video, I was trying to find a website that would sell the surplus ammo with the crate too and that's a good price
i bought one of these a long time ago, but haven't used much of it just because of it being corrosive... kind of a pain in the ass to clean the firearm afterwards. it is a really great cheap way to stock up on ammo though - and just like guns, generally the value always goes up. one recommendation: keep the can sealed if you want to preserve the life of the round.
In Soviet Russia, the box opens you! I got a single tin of 7.62x54r (really crusty too) and it had been sitting in my car all day in august. I drive home A/C on, box gets cool on outside, inside is still nice and toasty. my cousin is helping me open the Tin and he grabs a pack and said, "wow, these are warm". Couldn't resist, I say, "yeah, this is Russian surplus, probably from Chernobyl or something." He gets a haunted look and asks, "really?". I almost pissed myself laughing.
the website was sgammo.com and no you dont need a class 3 license but some websites will ask that you are over 18 its real easy alot of times easier than going to the store in my opinion its real easy just place your order and it will be sent to your door
not really. a little sprits of windex after you get done shooting. and then when you get home you run a bore snake with hoppes 9 a few times. after that your run a bore snake once or twice a month for every month you dont shoot to keep it in good shape. also i recommend a few drops of rem-oil for the bolt.
$15!? =0 the surplus store a quarter mile from my house sells the 20round boxes for $5, and the 440 cans for $80! Man i so thankful that I can get cheap ammo!
i just ordered the 108 rounds 7.62x54r low recoil bulk for 40.00 plus shipping thanks man for the info to this company great prices our store sells a box of 20 for $19.85 now thats a ripp off
Thanks, now i don't have to drive far to buy bulk. A review for buying online ammo really helps for first time buyers or people oh like as much info before buying things.
@domnikoli Just took a look at the site, I guess they no longer have the russian crates, and now it is just the Bulgarian crates. Which looks like its about 20 bucks more. But probably the same thing just different writing.
If only they had some in stock. I'm ordering from Cheaper Than Dirt and it's about $20 more for 2 spam cans and they don't come in the crate. SOme people saying the cans are damaged. I have to order now because starting Jan. 1, mail order ammo will not be allowed in New York State.
I've seen other ammo packed in metal tins that are opened like a spam can, and some African ammo packed in plastic pouches. I still like the U.S. Army ammo packaged on stripper clips.
Most of the time buying a CRATE (Two spam cans in the wooden box.) a can opener will come with them. I got into mine within ten minutes using a small chisel and a hammer.
Where the heck did you find a SVT-40?! Last time I saw one was at a gun show several years ago. That was a little show piece a vendor brought, he wanted roughly $800 for it, it was way over budget for me at the time.
i buy Tulammo. up here in pa i get it for about 13 bucks a box of 20. which is a little expensive but its non corrosive and bi-metal jacketed so i think it's worth it
Hey thank you sooo much!! because of your video i ordered from sg ammo! took i bought it on a holiday and got it at my door step 2 days later!! they are really good! thanks cactusmain thanks!
I do not like shooting that kind at all... lots of misfires. I as for the ammo with the silver strip painted on it.. this will be the silver tipped and is more accurately measured and weighted. I have no problems firing that stuff.
Ok. Thank you. I blew through another 100 rounds today of milsurp and did exactly what you said. Btw, if it does start to rust, will that weaken the metal where it won't be safe to shoot?
Quick question. I have a mosin nagant 91/30. I shoot the military surplus and i don't completely disassemble the gun, only take the bolt out and thoroughly clean that, thoroughly clean the barrel, and wipe down the area where the bolt normally lays. I use hoppes #9 so do you think that is good enough so it won't rust??
I love my Mosins cause they're easy to work on, fun to shoot and the ammo is cheap and available.. My 1938 German Mauser and my enfield are better rifles but the Enfield no 1 mk III sights are way worse. My favorite milsurp rifles to shoot are , Mauser (Expensive ammo) Mosin, Enfield (Expensive ammo).
I love getting ammo crates in the mail. I usually order from Dan's ammo and have always had good experiences. Yeah local prices stink. I just subscribed to your channel. Check out my channel if you are so inclined. Best part about the crates is that they come with a can opener.
Crazy how many packages there are just for ammo. Think about how much more ammo they could fit without all the damn packaging. 1 big box, 1 wooden crate, 2 spam cans, 20+ individual boxes with 20 rds each, and finally the ammo...lol
I like spending less money. This surplus is less than $5 per 20 rounds. Corrosive doesn't hurt anything. (just need to clean your gun, which you do anyway) happy shooting....
i know this ammo has risen in price b/c of not only the economy but obama too, but is their good ammo for this gun that wouldnt corrode as bad as surplus in this caliber that anyone would recommend

Everyone talks about the "Russian" (or other nationality) air escaping... If I'm not mistaken these cans are vacuum sealed and have no air in them anyway haha.
Yep,russki cans SUCK,cause theys vacuum packs

SG the best in 2011, and still is in 2021
DUDE i love SGAmmo I just got my one can of 440 rounds of 54r plus a 50cal ammo can and they packed the ammo for me in the ammo can great customer service!
Just bought my first Nagant today, so here I am! Thanks for this video, I was trying to find a website that would sell the surplus ammo with the crate too and that's a good price
A gun shop i went to in Ohio had atleast 2 dozen of these cases stacked up and they had them for sale at $5 each.
i bought one of these a long time ago, but haven't used much of it just because of it being corrosive... kind of a pain in the ass to clean the firearm afterwards. it is a really great cheap way to stock up on ammo though - and just like guns, generally the value always goes up. one recommendation: keep the can sealed if you want to preserve the life of the round.

Have watch it in 2011. Now its 2016 and im here again!
watch it agian in 2020
the website was sgammo.com and no you dont need a class 3 license but some websites will ask that you are over 18 its real easy alot of times easier than going to the store in my opinion its real easy just place your order and it will be sent to your door
I just ordered the same thing from marstar canada for 295 before taxes and shipping.... shipped to my door... 880 rounds of Chinese corrosive
I think in response to that movie theatre shooting, they just passed a bill prohibiting online bulk ammo buys such as this :(
not really. a little sprits of windex after you get done shooting. and then when you get home you run a bore snake with hoppes 9 a few times. after that your run a bore snake once or twice a month for every month you dont shoot to keep it in good shape. also i recommend a few drops of rem-oil for the bolt.
@cactusmain prices went down the new prices are are actually cheaper to buy with the crate, rather than individually
$15!? =0 the surplus store a quarter mile from my house sells the 20round boxes for $5, and the 440 cans for $80! Man i so thankful that I can get cheap ammo!
i just ordered the 108 rounds 7.62x54r low recoil bulk for 40.00 plus shipping thanks man for the info to this company great prices our store sells a box of 20 for $19.85 now thats a ripp off
You shouldn't have to pay extra for the wood crate. Most places just ship them still in the crates with no extra charge.
One spam can now sells for $400.
Nah, it's 147gr...188 is the factory number that produced it and 77 was the year of production.
I don't think you get my point. I'm sure the spam can alone would be fine. Even without the small individual boxes inside.
Thanks, now i don't have to drive far to buy bulk. A review for buying online ammo really helps for first time buyers or people oh like as much info before buying things.
sgammo is the only place that I order my ammo from!!! I have ordered that same crate!!
I live in Portland OR and i found a store that sells those for $5 for 20 rounds or a spam can of 440 rounds for $99.
@domnikoli Just took a look at the site, I guess they no longer have the russian crates, and now it is just the Bulgarian crates. Which looks like its about 20 bucks more. But probably the same thing just different writing.
People. Make sure you are checking spent cartridges for cracks. This ammo is Notorious for cracking when fired.
aimsurplus has them for 165 a case including shipping! ammoman has the case of non corrosive for 199 including shipping.
If only they had some in stock. I'm ordering from Cheaper Than Dirt and it's about $20 more for 2 spam cans and they don't come in the crate. SOme people saying the cans are damaged. I have to order now because starting Jan. 1, mail order ammo will not be allowed in New York State.
Got any relatives just across state lines (nudge nudge)?
Nope, but I managed to find a shooting supply store in TN that sold them by the unopened crate and I got what I needed before Jan 1
I was lucky enough to get 11 cans for $89 each from Dunhams sporting goods on 2 rain checks are still have one check left
I believe the R in 7.62x54R stands for Rimmed.
@noblinger ??? are you talking about the FN scar? if so, its a .308 gun. shoots 7.62x51mm not 7.62x54r
I got into mine within ten minutes using a small chisel and a hammer.
windex does work but you have to clean the windex out after u use if bc it is water based and can also cause rusting lol
Where the heck did you find a SVT-40?! Last time I saw one was at a gun show several years ago. That was a little show piece a vendor brought, he wanted roughly $800 for it, it was way over budget for me at the time.
yep crate. I've heard they occasionally don't have one.
i buy Tulammo. up here in pa i get it for about 13 bucks a box of 20. which is a little expensive but its non corrosive and bi-metal jacketed so i think it's worth it
they are back up in case anyone was wondering.
good stuff, i plan on getting a m44 and will likely be ordering a spam can of 7.62x54r soon
Vepr has a AK variant in this caliber too. New production.
This can also be fired out of the dragunov and dragunov variants
sgammo ROCKS! I've purchased from them. I'm not buying anymore ammo's locally. I'm getting straight from sgammo.com
Widener's very good too, and even Sportsman's guide is fast.
use a air cutter and just cut right around the rim. it comes right off and takes 3 mins.
ammo is just as good as new =] but remember to clean your gun with windex or hot water.. because surplus ammo is corrosive.
I just bought one of those at a gun show and man did it get heavy carrying out to the car.
Hey thank you sooo much!! because of your video i ordered from sg ammo! took i bought it on a holiday and got it at my door step 2 days later!! they are really good! thanks cactusmain thanks!
Its looks so nice that its almost a shame to open. Wouldnt mind having a couple hundred cases layin' around.
careful the surplus ammo is corrosive and you need to clean the gun shortly after shooting
They are still for sale on the web sites.
I do not like shooting that kind at all... lots of misfires. I as for the ammo with the silver strip painted on it.. this will be the silver tipped and is more accurately measured and weighted. I have no problems firing that stuff.
I'd get it but AIM surplus has same deal but cheaper and half rounds
Congrats. Ever heard of the Jack carbine?
i know a sight where its $20 for 100...but ts always cheaper to buy in bulk.
@cactusmain In california you can have ammo shipped to your house.
Is there any mosin nagant ammunition being currently made? Or are they all military surplus rounds?
Ok. Thank you. I blew through another 100 rounds today of milsurp and did exactly what you said. Btw, if it does start to rust, will that weaken the metal where it won't be safe to shoot?
Please tell me that that's what the deliveryman saw.
are there any other crates that pop open like the 50 cal cans? Or is all the 7.62x54 all in spam cans
Quick question. I have a mosin nagant 91/30. I shoot the military surplus and i don't completely disassemble the gun, only take the bolt out and thoroughly clean that, thoroughly clean the barrel, and wipe down the area where the bolt normally lays. I use hoppes #9 so do you think that is good enough so it won't rust??
is this the silvertip lightball ammo? the markings on the crate are the same markings for the lightball ammo
Exact same markings as the crate I got today :) 1977 production stuff
Crazy how many packages there are just for ammo. Think about how much more ammo they could fit without all the damn packaging. 1 big box, 1 wooden crate, 2 spam cans, 20+ individual boxes with 20 rds each, and finally the ammo...lol
I was at Big 5 in NorCal, and they were selling winchester 7.62x54r and it was 28 fucking dollars a box. Fuck. That. Noise.
I like spending less money. This surplus is less than $5 per 20 rounds. Corrosive doesn't hurt anything. (just need to clean your gun, which you do anyway) happy shooting....
cool, how reliable is the ammo you get from these cases?
nice! i just ordered a 440 tin. $90 delivered cant beat it! how should i open it with no tool? dremel?
Hey man, I just looked at sgammo.com and you were right they have a good website and ill be doing business with them soon. Thanks for the video.
i know a site where you can get giant spam cans of 440 rounds surplus for 95 bucks
Thank you for like telling me where to get ammo cuz I just bought a chinese made SKS so thank you alot
did you buy the 880 crate or just one 440 can i have heard some stores dont send a opener if u get just one 440 can
i picked mine up for 7 bucks for 20 rounds.......but need one of those
What is the grain size of those rounds, and do you think it would be good for hunting?
How cheap is the surplus compared to other noncorrosive ammo?
you can buy noncorrosive ammo i got some at ammunitionstore
com these fmj rounds. you can find brass hunting rounds online too
Honetly, is there ANY Nugget owner out there, who has NOT at least one spam can at home for shtf situations??
In Canada it cost like 16.95$ plus tx for 20 ammo MFS great video
At cabelas in Barrie ont. You can get these 1500 rounds for $350. Only down side is its corrosive ammo. Gotta clean good it after each use.
i know this ammo has risen in price b/c of not only the economy but obama too, but is their good ammo for this gun that wouldnt corrode as bad as surplus in this caliber that anyone would recommend
i didn't have the tool to open my can i had to use a flat head screw driver and a hammer to open mine it didn't take to long
do not open, until ready to use. they do go stale,
the 7.62x54r stands for 7.62x54rifled
*sigh*. The "R" in designation (7.62×54R) stands for Rimmed, in line with standard C.I.P. designations. Not Russian or rifle.
TheDesertFox you fell for the b8 m8
I typed that comment while watching the video. I saw later that you did check the headstamp.
how often do you have to clean your gun after using this
Thanks for the video and ammo source. Happy shooting.
how often do you have to clean your gun after using this. is this good SHTF ammo
how you have to found Russian PKT,that will be fun
Oregon it is $7 for 20
does it say 7.62x54r on the barrel?
@MegaPoopguy123 Yeah, we too! Its says "No guns...". End
how much did you pay for the 7.62X54r?
what is the muzzle velocity on these rounds? do you know???
