    Yeah, the sound is awful and the handling is a bit sloppy compared to the 458. It's faster, sure, but it's definitely lacking that Ferrari magic that is hard to put your finger on. I'm going to off this 488 GTB as soon as humanly possible and get into something else, like maybe an 812 Superfast.

    Long time subscriber here. I have a quick question for you.
    Do you pay cash or lease your Ferraris? I've seen a few RUclips guys make videos explaining why they chose leasing over cash and vice versa. I'm going back and forth on which option is best for me so any input would be appreciated.

    • @ray5961
      @ray5961  5 лет назад +10

      There are pros and cons to both. My first 3 cars, I paid cash for all of them. The F355, the 360 Modena and also the 458 Italia. All cash transactions. The 355 was $117.5K as I remember. The 360 was I think $125K? The 458 was $220K plus about $20K to register it in CA (and taxes), so all-in about $240K. All those deals were cash - either wired the money, then sent a truck for the car, or in the case of the 355, flew to the dealership, then the sales person and I drove to the bank and I drafted them a money order and drove home. Naturally, an all cash deal is good because you know exactly what you are paying and it's a done deal. With leasing, especially via Ferrari, you are dealing with basically an Italian bank and a semi non-standard leasing setup. With Ferrari, it's an open ended lease as I recall, which means basically it's a purchase effectively. On the good side, you are dealing with finance directly via Ferrari Financial. They are pretty easy to deal with if you have good credit and because you are dealing with high dollar cars, they usually structure the lease accordingly. But again, it's a slightly more dangerous lease, because it's not closed ended like say on a Toyota or something. It's more where you owe them X dollars at the end of the lease. Also, what you really gotta watch out for is if you build a relationship with a dealer, they are going to expect you to turn the car around through them - so if it's leased, it's not like "okay, hey, lease is over, here is your car back, thanks".. No, no, no sir. It's more like: "okay, cool.. we will sell your leased car (that you basically own, even though it's called a lease) and you can pay us 5% or 6% commission for selling your leased car to someone else. Umm.. okay. Awesome. So not only do you not have much negotiation power on price with the original lease, but there are fees and money factor and then once it's all said and done, basically you can either buy the car from Ferrari or Ferrari will sell it can take a commission. You do save sales tax if you live in CA, since you only pay taxes on your use portion of the car, but what you save in taxes basically goes to the Ferrari dealership when they sell and take their sales commission on the total sales price. So they get you coming and going, especially in CA. If you have the cash on hand, usually paying cash works out best (although again, CA is going to nail you to the wall). If you lease (using Ferrari Financial), then it works great, so long as you plan to roll over your car and get into the next car - in other words, you plan to build a working relationship with both your local Ferrari dealer as well as their bank over in Italy :-) Hope that helps you out some. Another thing to note: once you do lease a Ferrari via FFS (Ferrari Financial Services) - and you stay current with your payments and all that - then you can usually just walk in and sign and walk out with basically any car in the show room; plus the dealerships are usually pretty happy to get you any new car that comes down the line, since you are kind of in the fold at that point. Paying cash works well too, but of course you lose the use of that money while you are driving the car.

So far the Huracan (shocker!) is my favorite so far, but I have yet to get into a Huracan Performante so I am looking forward to that one day. The Huracan stands out due to its all wheel drive, its glorious engine note and the presentation of the whole thing from the outside and inside. The 458 feels like a good all around sports car and is a pleasure to drive, whereas the Huracan feels like a spaceship and just makes me smile a lot more. I also prefer the low end torque of the Huracan, as it likes to jump when you tap the gas. Great job on your channel by the way.

Some years back I did a photo shoot w/ my 355 and the photographer (winston goodfellow) drove up in a Lamborghini Miura. That was a pretty cool car, but back then I didn't even really realize how special a car it was. I think TJ Hunt just got a Lamborghini of some kind didn't he? I remember watching a couple of his videos and thinking the car did look very space age inside.

      There's not much as fun to drive as the 458, but I understand what you mean, For a while, I had an R1 and my 360. I soon realized that for fun I was always taking the motorcycle out when I had free time. After not driving the 360 for 6 months, I realized it was time to sell it and keep the R1. With the 458, it checks off so many boxes as far as having a fun sports car, I personally feel like unless you also happen to own an F40 or maybe an 812 Superfast, it's going to end up being difficult to not want to always be behind the wheel of the 458. Even as someone who is a diehard manual gearbox fan, the 458 is super enjoyable to drive; I personally always drove it in manual mode, as the auto shift mode is lame as far as I'm concerned. All I can tell you is that the 458 is an amazing car to own.

    Interesting video. I test drove an F8 Tributo and while a beautiful car, the experience just didn't wow me. I am very old school with a 1986 328 GTS and a 1990 Testarossa.
    However, I did aquire a 2011 458 Italia just to not be left in the stone age (needed to learn paddle shifting vs three pedals and a stick LOL). Beautiful car, was even told that if I replaced it with an SF90 Stradale, I would be disappointed. Still, the 458 does make me lazy vs the old school cars.

    • @ray5961
      @ray5961  10 месяцев назад

      Yeah, the 488, F8, etc. do nothing for me. I'm more old school also. My first car was a 355, then a 366 (both manual). I came close to buying a 550 and also a 512TR; won't mind owning an older car like a 250GTE or something. So I'm with you on the older cars being more Ferrari than the new stuff. The 458 Italia that I owned was far and away the most enjoyable sports car I've ever driven. It takes a little time to warm up to it and really appreciate what an amazing car it is, especially if you are coming from driving a gated gated. I had long said I would never buy any F1 car, but after owning the 458, I realized a lot that I didn't understand. If I can offer any advice on the 458, it would be never use auto mode. Auto mode is god awful; it will ruin the experience of driving the car. Also, to really drive the 458 F1 correctly, you have to think like you are driving a manual gearbox car, such as the 328. The F1 DCT gearbox actually is basically a manual gearbox and has to largely be approached the same. The only difference is you have a computer which is figuring out when to use the clutch on your behalf. But if you fully understand things, you can let the car roll back at a signal, go into N while driving, etc, etc. I think if you hold the left paddle down, it will also rapidly down shift, but I never did that. But if you just think in terms of driving a manual gearbox - where the paddles are doing the stick shift part - then the car suddenly becomes far more enjoyable. The 458 has just the right amount of modern tech; not too much, not too little. Also, driving it in Race or CT OFF is a lot more enjoyable. I pretty much always drove my car in CF OFF, unless I was coming home and needed to quiet down the exhaust, in which case just flip it back to normal. The other thing about the 458 is the battery... due to the draw of all the ECU's, the car barely operates correctly with a standard car battery. Do yourself a favor and stick a Lithium Ion battery in there. The higher voltage will make the car operate far better. I ran the Braille i48CS on my car and it was night/day difference. Anyway, the 458 is truly the best V8 Ferrari they have ever made. The stuff after cannot top it and given the state of things at the company, I doubt anything ever will.

    It’s crazy to me that it wouldn’t sound good. The F40’s 2.9 V8 sounds incredible, so you’d think Ferrari could make a turbo 3.9 sound great but it’s just not. I would actually be most disappointed in the redline. The 458, of course was 9000. For the 488 it dropped all the way to 7500. To me that’s huge, even with better torque is completely incomparable.

    • @ray5961
      @ray5961  5 лет назад +2

      Yes, I agree with you 100% - part of the reason I opted for the 488 was exactly what you mentioned above: If the F40 twin turbo sounds amazing, then why not the 488 GTB? I almost bought a damaged F40 back in the late 90's, as that was/is my dream Ferrari to own and modify (i.e. LM spec). But since the F40 has now gone over $1M, I figured the 488 might be found and sound similar. Not so much... I was going to weld up my own straight pipe exhaust, with resonators similar to the F40 Tubi exhaust, but ended up just trading the car in. The other point you make, about the redline with the 458 vs the 488 is true as well. The 458 pulls nicely right to redline. The 488 is faster and is quite a bit of fun, but it's a lot more torque and the shifts from 1st to 2nd can easily slam you into the rev limiter if you aren't on the ball. Doing a hard 1/4 run in a 488 feels a lot like you are shifting a close ratio motorcycle... the gears come up so fast you almost don't have time to think. I know, I know.. 3rd world problems. The 488 did start to grow on me after a while, but it certainly wasn't the love affair I had with my 458 Italia.

      Funny, I was just taking a shower and thinking maybe I should make a RUclips video explaining how I made money. It's a long story. I started out with nothing ($600) and made a few million by running companies and computer stuff over the years (took me about 16 or 17 years or hard work), plus stock market stuff. The short answer is I have run 5 or 6 companies and play the stock market. I also had a fairly large Internet company back in the 90's. Anyway, this was my 4th Ferrari. The 3 previous ones I paid cash for (the 355, 360 and the 458 Italia). On this particular one, I wasn't sure I would like it, so I leased it through Ferrari financial services. I wanted to establish a relationship with FFS, because I was contemplating getting maybe a Pista or F40 down the road and I wanted to lease those to begin with and not tie up a bunch of cash. Anyway, so the lease on a Ferrari isn't too bad. A couple thousand a month I think. I ended up selling the 488 for exactly what I paid, so owning it for 6 months ended up costing maybe $12K or something. Had I liked it more, I would have probably bought out the lease. Sadly, the engine noise of the 488 is awful and the car wasn't nearly as fun to own at my 458. Not real impressed with the new direction of Ferrari, so now I'm a Toyota pickup man. But the short answer is that on most all of my Ferraris, I purchased them as a reward for making a big trade in the stock market pretty much. Anyway, let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks!

Me personally, I got my start programming computers and my main focus has always been on technology, the stock market, money, etc. I've owned a number of companies over the years. So it just depends. The 488 is around $300K if you buy it outright or maybe $2000 or $3000 a month or something if you lease it. Ferrari has a financing arm called Ferrari Financial services; they will generally finance purchasing a Ferrari for someone with good credit and income, etc.

      @@ray5961 Thank you for that. I am also into computer stuff as an engineer. I think the owning businesses is the ticket. Just dont know what business would be realistic for me. I already have the stocks and crypto down and growing on that front.

    This guy sounds so u happy with the 488, why doesn’t he return and get something else? Maybe a Ferrari super fast

      CONRADO COSTA Si, I sold it as quickly as possible. I actually test drove an 812 Superfast recently - that's definitely a much more enjoyable car!

      @Vick G. What do you mean GT3 RS “beats” the Ferrari.
      There is a reason as to why you keep the 458 yes? Ferrari may not have the best times or isn’t even the fastest but yet it costs more and also holds great value. That tells you something right there.
      Also. Many have GT3’s. It’s like a Corvette at times. Too many folks have them.

    Dont understand all that BS Spoken Here. I Drove Both, the 458 and the 488. the 488 is the one that Reallly touched My Heart and made me Feel wow. Sound of the 458 is Boring at Low Revs and screaming at 9000 but is that desirable to Hold the car at 8000-9000 Rpm ? The 488 has the more masculine Sound and the refined technics. Definitely 488 !!!! Suspension is Second to none. Remember i am Talking about the Euro versions. There might be differences.

      Gusseisern That's interesting to hear. Yes, perhaps our US emissions play a role. I've owned the 355, 360, 458 and 488. The 488 exhaust note was the worst by far. The 488 accelerates and stops better than the 458 for sure, but overall the 458 is a much more well thought out car and far more enjoyable as a daily driver. Bullshit is always in the eye of the beholder...

      Mad Fly Sports They just don't appeal to me, but neither do the Ferraris produced after the 458 either. I think there might be an 812 superfast in my future. Which Lamborghini do you like most?
