777 baseline is so funky, I could smell the bass through the speakers! People would always ask why I had to roll the windows down (yes, roll…I’m an 80s kid!).
I'm still blown away that RUclips allows us to get a funk bass lesson directly from Brown Mark I'm 44 years old I started playing bass in the Late 80s if you are under the age of 25 there is no way you could understand how cool this is! I'm from the era where you just had to listen to the record and figure it out! Ultimate ear training no tabs no notation! Nothing but you and your ambition to learn! And that my friend automatically makes you a humble musician! Much love Brown Mark all the way from San Diego
@@MuammarHamed My nephews werent there bck then & will therefore nevr understand. They dont know who prn or Mike Jackson is. Theres something alchemical(?) about the sound of albums that can't be replicated digitally. I like the size & eaze of cd's but they nevr sound the same. Also the ritual of the turn table, the lp artwork etc. I have no Mp3/dont want it.
Hey Mark… I was at the L.A. Coliseum for that Stones event when the band got booed off the stage. I was so disappointed with how you were treated. You deserve all the respect in the world for believing in what you thought was good - AND it IS! You helped to create a whole new sound, beat(s), and feeling that wouldn’t have continued had you stopped. Both you and McCartney are my Idols... while Ida Nielsen is my Idoll! Thank you so much for your perseverance!!! Funk on!
Bro, I had learned Square Biz from a bass player in a USO band that came to my ship outside Naples, Italy! I had just really started out on the bass when I joined the Navy but carried one with me around the world! Thanks for the Great music!
The day the original recording's bass line is released (or leaked :p) in full, as a stand-alone, separate track...I will have no further function for my ears...
We have to get his subscriptions up. This man is highly underrated, and his talent needs to be showcased a whole lot more... I'm definitely gonna start sharing these videos...
One thing that makes me really sad is that a lot of very good musicians, Brown Mark included, had to stay in the dark until Prince’s passing, and only now they finally have the opportunity to share their work…
777-9311 one of my all time favourites baselines and one of the first I ever learnt to play! I learnt through watching a RUclips video of Prince playing it at a concert. Once again you’ve come in strong with the funk man, all praise to you🔥
Mark thanks for your contributions not only to princes early career but to the bass world i appreciate your tutorial to 7779311 everyone's videos are completely off and i could not figure the lick out until watching this video thank you
777-9311 that bass was funky, and listening to you play it. Funky Brown Mark!!! Terry was bad as well!!! Nothing like funky bass!! You and Terry where some of my favorite bass players.
😊The most underrated bass player on earth. Thank you for all the years of funk you have placed in our homes and in our lives. Please continue to engage with us and keep us in the loop, you are America's first cousin. You feel like family and we appreciate you. P. S. We are already Facebook friends and thanks for the engagement there as well, your responses are much appreciated.
“777” is the funkiest bcUZ it’s so technical in technique snd style that challenges one to play it perfect It’s like going through a right of passage based upon the sound and style that you snd Prince create!
Thank you soooo much for that break down, it's one of my favorite Time/Prince Jam. You're the man ! Please come up with that bass course, your groove is sick !
Dude you have been the man ever since I saw you at the Norfolk Scope in 1983 I think! You guys killed Lady Cab Driver and all of the music! Dez D. was still with yall!
This is what the true listener of Mr.Nelson’s music wants. The real accounts and then the dive into his music note by note. The skill and mastering of your instrument is phenomenal Mr. BrownMark. Must respect for what you are doing . We are coming up on 5 yrs since Prince left to go do other things and it’s so amazing to hear these jams from the bass perspective. Can you play the bass rumble from the Syracuse concert ( Baby Im a⭐️) oooooo and the bass groove same concert ( when Doves Cry) double mirror. Much respect to the Tina Marie Jam, but I pick 777 . Keep it going Mr.Brown he’s smiling at you with a bravo and 👍🏾👍🏾
Mark, I tip my hat to you with much respect, you are probably the most underrated bass player out there, I honestly feel that you are 1 of the best bass player's out there
1 of the greatest bassist of all time..Brown Mark with Prince was like the bassist Paul Chambers with Miles Davis..Jimi Hendrix had Experience and The Band of Gypsies..Prince had The Revolution featuring Brown Mark on electric bass
The syncopation on 777-9311 was so cloaked and funky with all the other instruments weaved in. Square Biz, funky, but straight forward funk. Love both of them.
Hey Brother, Its 2023, and you're still the Yoda of bass! Thanks for showing us how its done man!... Looking for a project from the Bad Boys of Paisley!! No pressure. Lol!
My young grandson has interest in the bass we both watch Mark videos. It's hard to believe we have the opportunity to take lessons from a "living legend" , also the stories...
I really appreciate you doing a segment on 777-9311. I’ve been playing this song for years and always wondered if I was playing it right. What I’ve been playing is pretty damn close to what you demonstrated.I was confused for a longtime because I seen other guys playing it and what they were playing was slightly different.I know that you would be playing it right! Thanks again!
Your not the "FORMER" Bass player of PRINCE and The Revolution...You "Are" the bass player of PRINCE and The Revolution. Him not being here doesn't make you not!
Man there is so much grease here, I can fry bacon! Brownmark is the truth. I just cant believe his name is not up there with Rick James, Bootsy, Marcus, Stanley and Verdine, and others.
Well, he's always been on my list cause I could never follow him and Stanley...The others I could break down. BUT The Mark, I could never hit it. I would love to see The Brown Mark on BASS, Morris Day on the drums and Jesse Johnson on Guitar. Now that would be some serious Sky Church!!!!
A lot of technical bass players have been showcased lately to show their prowess with quickness and the amount of notes they squeeze into a measure but Brown Mark brings the truth of the "Stank" and pocket! I appreciate all musicians, however, Mark has always been a favorite of mine. Would love to collaborate on some original tunes, but happy to even have these clips. Peace!🤘
Maaaannnnn both of these songs I grew up with!!!! I was around 11 when Square Bizz came out, and 12 when 777-9311.... I'd practice playing my drums to learn complexity... It worked.... Two amazing classic songs i still love wholeheartedly!!! Brown Mark I always thought you were a real Bad-Azz Bassist!! I still do! My top 5👑✊🏼!!!
Mr. Brown! Thanks so much for all your music! I think I finally have 777 down after an entire lifetime of trying to separate the bass from the synth line that's going at the same time! You're one of my favorite players. I read your excellent book! Your turn-around spins on stage with Prince used to kill us! Though we will always love Prince and the influence he had on the whole music world, I do think he dogged you... Can't wait for more music from you!
Slow it down to half speed and listen to Brownmark playing 777-9311 again. Stupid funky. Thanks for posting this tutorial BTW. I've listened to the original countless times, and seen vids of P playing it live, but still couldn't quite suss the pattern and the technique out. Now I gotta learn how to play inside out...#respect.
Hello, Brownmark. Its Shayde; we chatted a few weeks before Celebration. I asked your opinion on the 5 string. You told me the 5 is not ideal for playing funk- the 4 string is. Well, I went ahead and got the 5 Cuz it’s just been on my wish list for so long… Anyway, I’m back at this 777 tutorial, and you were right! The 4 is better for funk!! But just wanted to holler and say that I am picking it up (777) more every day. Good lookin’ on slowing it down for those trying to catch up. One love, brother 🎵
Mark! Thanks. This is like being invited by the wizard to the potion lab! One song, a lifetime worth of magic within. Yoda would say, “simple, it is not!”
This show is my number one favourite of all your shows sir. My humble request is that you breakdown Square Biz by itself. That bassline deserves its own show. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for the pointers Brown Mark. I've struggled over the years trying to gets this right. Square Biz, Get it up and Working Day and Night by Michael Jackson all have similar base lines. Would love it if your broke down the subtlties of each sound. Thanks again for the schooling.
Thanks for the 777-9311 tutorial; I'd been tryna figure out how P did it for years. Could you do a tutorial on the bass line to 'Glide' by the band Pleasure? Thanks.

Appreciate that, thank you.

Hell.. He doesn't get Enuff credit for his own solo work. I've got all his stuff and his side projects. Dude is DOPE!!
AGREED!!!!
easily one of the most overlooked & underrated bass players ever
No question!!!
777 baseline is so funky, I could smell the bass through the speakers! People would always ask why I had to roll the windows down (yes, roll…I’m an 80s kid!).
Brown Mark is a legendary brother in his own right!!! Revolution was/is/always the real deal!!! Fink, Wendy and Lisa, Bobby Z!!! Dez too!!!
Dez was gone before the Revolution; he last appeared on the 1999 album.

Hey BROWN! Just wondering what type of preamp do you have in that bass? or is it passive?
Well said!! I’m from the era when I used to lift the needle off the turn table or fast wind the tape to learn bass parts
I was there! I totally get what you’re saying.
@MadHatterND I was just telling my nephew this morning. You had to be there to fully understand what i'm saying!
