I always felt like RFTW were heavily influenced by the Time/Prince so when they hit, Motown was already primed for that sound. Tonight was played at least 3x on the radio everyday when it came out in Detroit.......at NIGHT at first!!! Back then it was a scandalous track.
toy peezy that's Terry Lewis, also a wonderful producer, together with keyboarder Jimmy Jam, real name James Harris III. Google them… Luv u 4 luving him, btw.
Real singers, musicians playing live! Musicians whom knew how to read, write and compose music. They respected the craft. Middle class wages paid for their music/singing lessons. Once upon a time we had music classes in public schools! Racism and greed took it all away. Taxes will bring it all back! If not, the arts will die. Vote people, -VOTE! -VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS!! Make the rich pay more taxes, not less or we will all perish! VOTE!! Your life depends on it.
You had to bring your ignorant political views into this great video. So I will tell you where you are wrong. I hope in the two years since you posted that you learned how stupid your remarks about racism and the virtues of democrats. How about get a job instead of worrying about rich people. Rich people provide jobs--they don't need to pay as much taxes because of that. Our tax law encourages that otherwise they just keep their money and you work at a car wash. You are probably one of those people waiting for government to give you a check because you are a liberal loser acting on emotions rather than results. Explain how racism and greed took away music classes. Sounds like a typical liberal excuse rather than a solution to your problem. Could be that democrat governments would rather pay illegal immigrant benefits than take care of schools? Democrats gave you BLM---Burning, Looting, and Murder in all the democrat run cities last summer. Now you have Biden. Too bad you didn't work on the fraud for the lower offices so you could really screw it up. I hope you are happy because you will regret your democrat government. Just wait and see how we turn out.
LOVE this version! Guitar sounds a lot heavier, which gives this song an edge. I was working at the PBS station in St. Paul in the late 90s where they taped this back in 1982...they still had it and we put in a clip to their weekly show. So good!
I wish I could have seen these guys live in their prime. I was 10 years old when the Triple Threat Tour (Prince, The Time, and Vanity 6) came through Atlanta at the Fox Theater. I saw a flyer online a few years ago promoting that tour. The tickets were $11. Could you imagine? Even in 1982, $11 was very affordable for a working class family like my own. Fun times!
now this is how an audience is supposed to react to a band like this - people are screaming and cheering and dancing having the time of their lives. That makes the band feel like their presence there is more than welcomed and respected and in turn the band gets hyped up to give the audience a show unlike any they've ever seen before. And I bet everyone there went home feeling they won the lottery and Willy Wonka's top ticket at the same damn time. LOL
I have seen The Time twice ( only original members), and they were the tightest, baddest band. And yes, Prince was afraid of them. I do wish that they made album with Prince as a member as on cover, playing next to Jesse. Prince, Jimmy Jam, Terry, Monte, and Jesee writing songs.
THIS VIDEO MADE ME GET OFF MY WALKER AND GRAP MY FUNKY SHOES, TO DO SOME REAL WALKIN'!!! WALK SO COOOOOOOL! WATCH ME NOW (so I won't fall on my funky self!)
That extended jam at the end is what Prince picked up for DMSR's live performances. The thing is similar to what he did with the Revolution. It's available on tape at the First Avenue benefit show in 1983.
Thank you for this! I can't get enough live Time performances! I wish Prince had let these guys blossom into the mega stars they were destined to be. He was definitely threatened by the talent and charisma of THE TIME!!!
Thank you!!! I posted the exact same comment on few of The Time's YT performances. There were people that thought that I was wrong for posting it. Yes! Prince has said on more than one occasion that The Time was the only band that he was afraid of.
Yeh but you got to understand they are simply COVERING Prince's performances in the studio. He laid ALL the tracks for these songs except Morris' parts!! They bad, but PRINCE was the shizzzzzzzzz!!!
Aye....there's a vid online somewhere of Prince playing alone in the studio...sitting down, engineers out of the frame. He was the only one who could play it better than Terry. Loads of guys were trying to play that line....just wasn't happening. LOL.
@@Stickycush420 Was looking for it the other day... someone put it up on Prince.org site......not sure if it made it's way to RUclips....it might have at some point before his people removed it back in the day. If/ when I see it - I'll upload it at some point.
ken hunter there’s no “winner” yes Prince wrote most of the Time’s material but credit still must be given to Morris all the same. he’s been dissed, mislead and ripped off by Prince and he shrugs it off and remains cool as a cucumber. that’s highly respectable in my book. cool cat. (all this being said I love Prince don’t get me wrong)
If you could put funk, little bit of rnb, little bit of disco, little bit of pop, and make it expert , this is what that is. New sound. Different powerful dance energy. All good music all good vibes. I was born in the wrong era. Praise prince for writing all this music!
Most of those Minneapolis cats who grew up together were back during that time were all cut from the same cloth, hence the outrageous talent pool that was assembled and ruled that era of music. Prince just had a little more work-ethic, drive, ambition, confidence, and creative genius than the rest.
Law Tann I worked with Fink and Brown Mark and played guitar with The Revolution back in 2016 after Prince passed. Fink confessed The Time used to put a foot in the Revolution's ass night after night that some nights it was hard to come out and follow them..lol..
Lawrence Tanner most def! Just look at J. Jam T. Lewis flawless productions and highly scored the multi platinums ... only Great producers musicians at this level can do/achieve! Word!
Lawrence Tanner this is a fact. Jimmy, Terry and Jesse confirmed that Prince took them off the bill in NYC, LA, & Atlanta which were the biggest markets. The irony is they played for vanity 6 behind the curtain
Okwudili Ani i guarantee u that my being the age i was at the time would have only upset my mother concerning my pregnancy not me,especially if it was the one PRINCE.
I saw the Prince, The Time and Vanity 6 in concert in 83. The Time blew Prince and the Revolution off the stage. Prince got mad and cut the concert short.😂😂
I'm watching this on the birthday of my dear friend of 50 years. The Time was his favorite band.✊🏾Rest In Power,Reggie Turner.7/15/67- 2/27/22.
Jellybean does one hell of job recreating the greatest Linndrum track ever created
JClaus1221 FACTS!!
Created by the great David Garibaldi of Tower of Power!
💯
And Jesse does an amazing job recreating that Prince guitar solo!!!
Prince choices one by one himself... Damn!
The Time. So glad I grew up with their music. This is one of the most locked bands I've ever heard. They killed 777-9311. That pocket is sick!!
Sho nuff
ABSOLUTELY. REAL music played by REAL musicians. no "auto-tune" or "instrumental background playback" needed
That's a HUGE amount of talent on one stage right there... That line-up was insane
Morris Day, what a frontman. He was the it !!!
JESSE WAS A BEAST ON THE GUITAR!! No one except Prince could touch him at that time
AIN'T NOBODY BAD LIKE THE ORIGINAL 7VEN!!!!
25 people are clueless..
Nobody 🎶🎶🎶
Man Morris Day is one of the best frontmen ever. He can absolutely move a crowd like no other.
Jesse is killing it on the guitar 🎸🎶
The Time 2024 and beyond!!!
I still have this ALBUM!!!!!
The Album is worth some coins since everything is on disc now!!!!
He was one of the few that Prince actually respected in guitar. Jesse was dangerous. Prince always kept him at a safe distance. Check your history.
True. I don't think Jesse has gotten enough recognition for his guitar playing. I heard Prince also liked Carlos Santana as a guitarist.
Jessie was great but Prince was a Guitar God!!!
Jesse was very good, but he could by no means fuck with Skipper. (Prince)
Jesse my dude but he couldn't touch Prince
Jesse could ABSOLUTELY hold his own with Prince.... on guitar anyway lol @@gittahfiend
ROCK CITY Jesse Johnson Rock Island Illinois native! One bad brother on the Guitar and The Time one best Funk Bands in tha land!
Rock Island also had great high school basketball teams
That’s my hometown! Two of my best friends and band mates played in Pilot with Jesse. Billy Peiffer and Bob Boyd. Jesse is a legend
The love from Detroit for The Time was like no other. It was unreal.
The TIME and PRINCE always shouted us out
I saw that Triple Threat Tour at Joe Louis Arena!!!!👍🏾
Yup. Detroit use to have their music playing on Record Store promoting their store in the early to mid 80’s.
I always felt like RFTW were heavily influenced by the Time/Prince so when they hit, Motown was already primed for that sound. Tonight was played at least 3x on the radio everyday when it came out in Detroit.......at NIGHT at first!!! Back then it was a scandalous track.

Terry Lewis (Bass) Jimmy Jam (Keyboards behind him) = Flyte Tyme
Of course that is the great Terry Lewis…
Terry was underrated
Go on and walk Terry, that bass is the shit!

@@johnhoooten5536 I don’t believe in leftist liberal ideologies either! But what about those people storming the capital??
Kick ass timing. Super tight. They rehearsed they ass off for this

The Time was the shit!
I forgot how tight the Time was playing live. Very Dope!
Brings me such great memories of High School and College days. Love this group and my crush Jesse Johnson who slayed that 🎸 Solo.

Exactly I love active and supportive crowds
Morris gotta be the coolest man ever-period!!!
This dude made Stacy Adams and smoking jackets fashion accessories in the 1980s.
They were the last of those great funk bands from the 70s and 80s.
Jesse channeled his inner Hendrix 💪🏾
Jesse Johnson...the guitar shredah!!! That emeffin bass line and drum beat in the beginning and thru out...shiiid there is no other that comes close

it doesn't get much badder than this folks
The Time was one dynamic very talented band all the way around.
They were the tightest band! March 12, 1982, Raleigh NC
One day after my birthday remember it Asif it was yesterday.wow.
Wow!!! This is my favorite band. These guys is what made me want to play music as a career.
THIS VIDEO MADE ME GET OFF MY WALKER AND GRAP MY FUNKY SHOES, TO DO SOME REAL WALKIN'!!!
WALK SO COOOOOOOL! WATCH ME NOW (so I won't fall on my funky self!)
Most bands & artists moulded themselves from The Time. They had it all. They were the template for a hell lot of musicians.
The TIME = The BADDEST SHOW BAND ever! 😎👌🏽
LEGENDARY BAND.
This is what you call the chitlin circuit for them. They went on to bigger and better things! RIP Prince!
That extended jam at the end is what Prince picked up for DMSR's live performances. The thing is similar to what he did with the Revolution. It's available on tape at the First Avenue benefit show in 1983.
Watching this I couldn't stop myself from walking my body
I was in high school talent show me and my friends dress up like the time I was Morris day yesssss
Thank you for this! I can't get enough live Time performances! I wish Prince had let these guys blossom into the mega stars they were destined to be. He was definitely threatened by the talent and charisma of THE TIME!!!
I agreeI Even though he put the whole thing together, his pettiness hurt what the group could have been.
ERIC F Prince himself said they were the ONLY band we was afraid of.
UNDFTDGordon True. But everything happens for a reason. I can't imagine my life without the team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis!!

ERIC F you're absolutely right 100%
Jellybeans drum line is still one of the coldest beats ever!
saw them live at the horseshoe hammond indiana .. couple years ago ... nothing changed ... the 1980s were the fkn bomb !!!!
Prince once said that 777-9311 was the baddest bass line he ever wrote. :)

Prince struck platinum with this side project cuz they were so good.
Sweet! Jimmy jam and Terry still in the band. 1999 tour probably in progress.
Pure genius in every possible way.
There is no other band imo. ❤️🔥❤️💜🙏
AWSOME *. ONE OF THE VERY FEW SUPER GREAT LIVE VERY TIGHT BANDS *. I've seen them at least 4 times in person. Every Show is Unique *

Damn. Just to think the highest selling album of all time came out a few weeks before this performance. Such a great time for music!
I remember watching this on PBS in Detroit. AND recording this on my cassette recorder!!
Off the hook still after all these years! Really cool to hear The Walk live. They don't seem to perform it live that often for some reason.
Damn! So Rare! I love it!
The Time Was Bad Back Then. Thanks To Prince Who Put Them Together.
