I've heard many sing the praises of the battalion's backup over the years and yet I somehow did not know until now that the damage resistance also applies to rocket jumps. I will definitely have to use it more often
Battalions is probably the best backpack because it’s passive conch is good too but team mates usually don’t push with you and it relies on them having brains to do damage
I remember using the BB at the same time as the enemy medic popping kritzkrieg on a heavy. My team hid, but I realized I was invulnerable to crits, so I just walked towards them menacingly until they realized I was outdamaging them so they ran away. One of my most badass moments in TF2
@@MINICUBANT wdym you dont have extra range the half zatoichi litterally has a larger melee range it says so right on the weapon description. also yes its extremely situiational & most of the time if the person your dueling is a demoknight your probably gonna lose but sometimes the risk is well worth the reward, its certainly happened to me before but if you dont use the zatoichi on soldier i can see why this peice of info would be useless, still i feel like its better for me to comment this than not since theres no reason not to say this
@@artifactU I don't say that your comment is useless, but that you can hardly use this strat. For the long range melee , i rechecked and i was wrong , sorry. And a thing we both forget , this is a viable strat on medieval mode
I think conch is massively underrated, and you kind of skipped over why. The speed buff alone grants insane value. A good scout or demoknight are incredibly scary to 1 v 1 because they have the mobility to dodge projectiles, juke shots, take advantage of damage ramp up, chase injured players, and leave when at a disadvantage. Granting this ability to a portion of the team means you'll still take full damage from shots, but that's assuming you're getting hit at all. Higher health teammates are great. But an entire team that's as fast as scouts is just as good.
10:44 one more thing I'd like to add to this section. Make sure your launcher is fully reloaded before popping your banner. I've had several moments where I forgot to reload and didn't realize until I'd already popped and ran into a fight, only to die immediately.
Awesome video man, also here's a little tip: When you pop a banner, you can keep holding m1 during the animation to stop it from deploying, and once you release m1 the banner immediately activates, which is helpful for better timing
i like conch when popped with allied phlog i love buff banner for cow mangler soldier 'sniper'. your rockets do 135 from across the map for the duration, no need to charge, and the perches you'l find as soldier are great vantage points. battallions is cute for the reasons you and others mention, but if other soldiers can just move faster and further(because they have gunboats), you lose the fight even when popped
I used to play support soldier constantly, but it seems that pyro has become so popular in the last few years and players are truly getting better a reflecting. Support soldier is so much fun to play but most of the time I find myself in need of the shotgun.
All banners have a great way to shine. You explained very well all the good points of Battalions Backup. But I want to tell some stuff with other buff : The Concheror is often used with the black box (you mentioned it too) , which is a terrible choice. I understand the idea of "healing item with healing item" , but the Concheror give you healing by DEALING DAMAGE , so if you want it to shine , heal while dealing high damage. Also this banner is particularly powerful on constant damage class (pyro and heavy) , as the speed increase their aggrisivity , and the healing is constant. You can mimic that by using the Beggar's Bazooka , the only rocket launcher with constant spam , and also allow big burst damage. The Buff Banner is usually not powerful , but with the right teammates it become unstoppable. I never play it , but i played against it , and a kritzkrieg to charge to buff , followed by minicrit for team , giving pyro easy phlog metters , and demo easy sticky spam kills , with a overall passive random crit buff for everyone after that (you know , the random crit snowball mechanic) , is just a pain to fight against. Even a vaccinator isn't enough.
@@artifactU Try spame clicking on beggar's bazooka and you will see that it's the fastest rocket launcher , not the slowest. If you just want to see it in a video , look at soundsmith video "[TF2] A Mann's Guide to the Beggar's Bazooka" , at 2:56
@@MINICUBANT ok but its still really inaccurate & theres a delay betwee when you start clicking & when you start shooting. idk why you cant beleave that black box conch is just really good. id rather get ~50 health per perfectly accurate rocket that i can shoot at any time than spam innacurate shots which gain way less health
yup, banner soldier is so much fun. Problem is it requires you to understand gamesense and positioning. Play around your team and don't push mindlessly and give up important chokepoints. I rediscovered this playstyle recently with the black box and have stomped 90% of matches i've played with it. Fun
13:21 on that the Battalions damage resistance should be worded as 35% of base damage so the increased effectiveness at range gets communicated through implying it is applied before falloff
4:36 I don't know why this is a batts specific tip, as all banners have the same range of 450hu, and all 3 banners have their own different situations that require more grounded team play.
Just started getting into tf2 and loved your videos. Helped me a lot but I have one question, what Is the importance of rocket jumping and rollouts during a game?
rocket jumping is a VERY important skill to have when playing soldier for the simple reason that it takes him from one of the slowest classes in the game to by far the fastest and most rollouts are used in competitive to ensure that your team can reach the point faster than the enemy team, so having pre-planned rollouts to get you there ASAP helps cut your time to get to the action significantly
Rocket jumping is critical to be familiar with to be an effective soldier. The comparison of movement capability between waddling and rocket jumping is so immense its hard to describe As for specific preplanned rollouts, youll find that it varies depending on the gameplay environment. In most casual pubs you can get away with more ad-hoc rollouts. With how unreliable the healing options can be, you might find yourself in the action faster but with no health, leading to a lot of feeding In more competitive and structured environments, it is a crucial skill as it defines the first team fight every round and makes your effective respawn timer slower. With a constant and high-skilled medic they will also be able to get you buffed quickly if you manage your crit heals appropriately
Other commenters are right, rocket jumping is very important to improving as a soldier - soldier's greatest strength is his mobility. It's difficult to explain how strong the gunboats are to a new soldier player, I could write a whole essay on it probably. For the sake of brevity let's just say there's a reason the sixes meta has been double gunboats soldier since ~2015 I would take it a step further and say that learning to rocket jump is an essential skill for improving at tf2 because it is the fastest way to learn movement fundamentals that will help you on other classes (airstrafing, damage surfing, etc.).
i think the main problem of the battalions is that it needs an awake team. i never have a problem getting the 600dmg. even in uncletopia, it seems that people dont read chat and i'll start the charge near my team, and find myself being the only one pushing. as a general tip, i think players should be more aware of when banners are active, so that they can capitalise on them.
im sure vc would help with this, but yea better knowledge on what they sound like and noticing where the soldier is located would help the other people
A good casual supporter playstile is air strike soldier. I noticed that playstyle makes you less stronger than stock soldier if your team isn't that much good but incredibly effective if you have a team covering for your long reload times. You become more capable at stopping a push or making one but less strong at dealing with a prolonged fight so you either die or get out ot there through rocket jumping. So yeah you re gonna find success by being a team player and having a decent team.
@@willtheoct the playstyle you need to adopt with the airstrike to be most efficient is more oriented to team player rather than a 'lone wolf'playstyle.
Banners are rare, because they are not viable, because 1. you loose the mobility of gunboats, 2. for you to charge them in an effective amount of time you need to be in your enemies face, 3. when in your enemies face and you shoot them, because you dont have gunboats you take 40-50 damage just by shooting at them, 4. after being in your enemies face you can not escape with gunboats. 5 if you want to charge them out off an effective damage range, with chipdamage you‘ll have to run cow mangler. You can finish your whole magazine of 24 rockets with stock or original and still not have it charged. Whoever came up with 600 damage for the battalions backup? For the minor upside of 20 health (1 blackbox shot?). The reason hardly anyone plays banners is because they suck. Your teammates dont event notice you activated it half the time unless its the buff banner with its speed boost. You get a little icon on the screen. Thats it. The banners need rework, because except for the rare encounter of the buff banner, I just about never see the other banners used. It needs a buff, your teammates need to know they are getting that banner buff visually and playwise.
