I believe Mr. Schell’s initial “little joke” that Mr. Rudd and he “couldn’t be less Asian” is unfortunate because it emphasizes the “2 camps” he later decries and it is disrespectful of his intellectual interests and possibly, of his family. I argue that if/since you have spent your life studying Asia and you are intermarried with an Asian person, you are in some sense at least a “little bit Asian.” As a female, Caucasian sociolinguist married to a Chinese person, I feel that you project a sense of “superiority” when in fact a better choice of words might have created a more clear picture of your positive identification with China.

Google: Democracy Now 03/16/21 Vijay Prashad, director of Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, says the “bellicose” tone out of Washington is not because the U.S. sees China as a military threat, but because China threatens U.S. dominance in the scientific, technological and diplomatic spheres. “It’s very chilling what the U.S. government is doing in ramping up this cold war,” says Prashad.

These Anglo Saxon west pro-west types will never in their hearts cheer for China. Some are naked about it, some beat about the bush, some hide it. They will never understand China no matter how much they study the Chinese language and culture. I mean even the traitorous hk and Taiwan who are by blood Chinese can't even understand China , what can be expected of the west. Actually Malaysian diaspora love China more than the hk n Taiwan people.

Despite the biased opinions and ideological views on China, Orville and Kevin have pointed out two facts:
    1. US-China trade is in an extremely imbalance state and
    2. China don't want chaos, but some other country (i.e. U.S.) prefer chaos.
The imbalance of U.S.-China trade is actually in favor of U.S.. The real meaning of the trade deficit is that the Chinese are shipping over 300-billion-dollar goods and products to US every year, in exchange to get all the papers named "dollars" back. The hegemony of U.S. currency -"dollar" - is the reason why U.S. enjoyed the great trade deficit since 1970s. How come you have the credit to take other countries' wealth by papers? The credit is not infinite, U.S. strategy to recycle the dollars back is of course not to pay "wealth" back through products, but through the wars, chaos, crisis of the other countries, like chaos in Latin America, collapse of Soviet Union, crisis in Southeast Asia and so on. In this way, US paid off their deficit for free whatsoever (BTW:promote so-called free market especially in financial sector in other countries helps a lot in the process). That's the root cause of the trade imbalance between US-China and why US prefer chaos.
The real challenge for China is how to cash out the anual 300 billion dollars trade gain, there is no way for U.S. to allow Chinese invest papers back in U.S. market (So do the Europeans&Japanese cause they are not stupid), the notion of free market is nothing but bullshit propaganda. Keep the papers and let's them rot in China's basement is what U.S. real wants. But Chinese are not stupid either, President Xi promoted one belt one road initiatives through which China invested these dollars in third world countries to built roads, railways and other infrastructures, not only helped other countries, but in exchange got raw materials back. So does the AIIB which created to fund these projects. These projects are really win-win for both parties and China is creating a new ecosystem. The entitled free meals, which enjoyed by American for many decades, are in profound risk nowadays. Which is BAD for U.S., but good for humanity.
Above is a logical reasoning and analysis from a former STEM Chinese student. I love my American professors, but I love truth more. :)
Again, despite the ideological nonsense on China, Orville, thanks for your grandfather's contribution in establishing Xiangya Medical School (Yali Hospital) and Yali Middle School in Changsha which are forever been appreciated by Hunan people and we will never forget.
    除了满篇的偏见和意识形态宣传之外,Orville和Kevin指出了两件事实:
    1. 中美的贸易处在极度不平衡的状态中;
    2. 中国人喜欢秩序,不喜欢搞乱世界,而其他国家(美国)喜欢搞乱世界
    实际上美国才是贸易赤字的始作俑者,因为美国所谓的贸易赤字的真正含义,是中国每年运送超过3000亿美元的货物到美国来,换回来一堆叫做“美元”的纸。美元霸权才是美国从1970年代以来一直享受贸易赤字的真正原因。为啥老美可以拿白条去换别人家的财富?这个白条也不是可以无限打的,美国不可能用财富或货物去兑现这些白条,所以必须通过战争、危机、搞乱其他的国家,比如拉丁美洲、苏联解体、东南亚经融危机等等。通过这样的办法,不花一分钱的就把白条干掉了(顺便说提一句,让别的国家搞自由市场特别是金融自由化大有帮助)。以上才是中美贸易不平衡的根本原因,也是为啥美国喜欢搞乱世界的原因。
    中国每年拿到手里这3000亿美元的白条怎么办?美国也绝不会允许中国人拿这些纸来美国市场里投资的(欧盟和日本也没那么傻),所谓的“自由市场”不过是宣传的狗屎而已。让这些废纸烂在中国人手里是老美最想看到的结果。但中国人也不傻,习大大搞的“一带一路”,就是拿这些美元去第三世界国家投资去,建公路、铁路各种基础设施,不仅仅帮助了沿线国家,也换回了矿产物资。亚投行也应运而生去资助这些项目。这些项目对中国和当地国家来说当然是双赢的事情,中国也因此开始建立新的生态系统。但是这么一搞,老美吃了全世界几十年的免费餐,慢慢的可能就吃不下去了。这对美国是大大的坏事,但对全人类是件好事。
    以上为一位中国留学生的逻辑推理分析。我爱我的美国老师,但我更爱真理 :)

Chinese renminbi will become the world currency only when China become a democracy. Without democracy, the current Chinese government will not allow Chinese renminbi to be traded freely outside of China. So, when Chinese renminbi is not freely traded outside of China, even the Chinese manufacturer demand for USD from their customer. I have imported a lot of goods from China and all the manufacturer demanded USD because they have more trust towards USD. The Chinese manufacturer knows how corrupted Chinese systems are and have invested part of their assets in Australia, Canada and USA. WHo is to blame?

This is the reply to the audience' question: to be a person who went through a great academic institution, US left me profound positive experiences about the Western ideas and America. No doubt about it. I am grateful. I would think the most Chinese oversea students and scholars would share my experiences, especially for those during the period (1978-2005).
People's minds are not restrained by their training disciplines. I am a STEM person. But I would say, America has to allow 3-5 years for a person to appreciate the system and idea. In fact, before I went to US for five years and I was in Europe for about 10 years. It was still America that left me deeper marks in my thoughts' system.
Unfortunately, I am seeing the other side of America now. America is deviating from its highest point (WWII).

Every western scholar talks about June 4th Tiananmen in isolation from the May 4th Movement and the mess China was during western imperialism and the fall of the Qing Dynasty. 4/6 Tiananmen came after over a decade of trying to recover from Mao’s excesses and thereafter a sudden relaxation of economic life; raising questions of where is China going after Hu Yaobang died creating a power vacuum and a power struggle between Li Peng and Zhaoziyang. The mix messages, political and economic situation at that time reignited the spirit of May 4th and culminated to the call for democracy and end of authoritarian rule. That call and asking leaders to step down, ended with Deng calling in the troops to end it all once and for all. From then on its not only about June 4th but end of political discourse of May 4 th, creating the social contract that CCP rules and people enjoys the economic goods. Thats what june 4th 1989 is all about. Period.

Yep. China has come a long way since Tienanmen Square, but that was in 1989, or 30 years ago. The communists believe it is time they exerted their will on the people and the world. Maybe Tienanmen Square needs repeating. My guess is it will be.

Great discussion but unfortunately, nobody wants to be frank about the root of the problem. The consequence of the current system not just affect china but all other developing nations. Developing nations work the butt off to partially finance the luxurious life of most western nations. The root cause is printing unlimited money by certain nation without putting in real effort. With a nation rising up so fast and if the trend continues, the current system of living off others will eventually collapses. The truth is America living standard is inevtably going to fall. It would have happened decades ago but the super military power delays it.

China is under enormous economic pressure from Mr Trump, and they are certainly going to face a prolonged recession over the long term. China has had a programme of economic domination in place for some time based not on their armies strength but trade. Too many scenarios of their heinous strategy on trade blackmail and posturing to list here, however, two examples; Infrastructure bribery in the Pacific Island nations and the proclaimed ownership of the whole of the South China Sea. Furthermore, the idea that free trade in its current forms is good for Australia not only with China but Europe as well is just a political wet dream. We are the losers worldwide - China banks on this trade weakness in our politicians. Free Trade is a sin doctor's glory hole for duping Australians. God help us if Labor gets the treasury benches as we will become a satellite state of China. However, the oxen is slow but China is patient, now they have a dictator for life they will just wait democracy out!

I am Thai sixty years old living in Thailand whole life and love my born land. I used to be proud of having some chinese ancestors and kept hoping that one day china will become a free nation by people, for people, under people. China has been out of poverty for the past more than twenty years after being under communist china party for nearly a century or more. Capitalism and free enterprises have invaded into china enough to put chinese out of poverty. I thought it is time to free chinese people but it did not happen and seems like it will never happen. I have been happy whole my life in a free nation like Thailand where we are trying hard to have government from people, for people, and under people. For the past five years Thailand has been under military self elected government and developed close relationship with CCP. I think communism/dictatorship/totalitarian/state-control way of much bigger in size friend can have lots of influence over Thailand. I started to dislike the way my nation move toward and how china has shown for the past five years how aggressive CCP can be and will be. To me this is a threat to the world. If chinese people in china actually are happy with your system then kindly let Thailand be free and pursue government by people, for people, under people. Chinese people should live in china and do not try to buy out other nation as long as you are communism/totalitarian/dictatorship/state-control ways. About china conflicts with USA, to me, it is just an adjusting period necessary to happen when one nation suffers from doing business with the other nation and the suffered nation must try to change the circumstances.
