We judge busts by their entire body of work. Smith ultimately had a respectable career. I haven't met a 49er fan that dislikes him--plus, coming back from that injury he deserves every bit of credit he gets.
We judge busts on multiple variables. Sports aren’t a guarantee and that’s what makes it so interesting. You can have an amazing run in college, get drafted and just not pan out.. or there’s a litany of injuries that sap their athletic abilities. We’ve concluded players are busts on less than their “body of work”
I know he’s beloved by Chiefs Kingdom. Even during his ‘bust’ era in San Francisco, I never thought he was one. He seemed like a decent QB who was in a shitty situation of constant coaching changes & little support. I’m glad he finally got a chance to show what he could do with a stable organization.
He was also the #1 overall pick and never at any point played like a #1 pick so thats a bust to me. You cant just be ok as the #1 pick. You need to be an elite level qb and Alex Smith was never that
We definitely do not judge draft busts on their entire body of work. What matters is draft position vs benefit for the team that drafted the player. If Zach Wilson or Sam Darnold go on to be decent with another team, that doesn’t make them not a massive bust disaster for the Jets. Alex Smith might not be remembered as a bust by casuals, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a bust for the niners.
"Haven't met a Niners fan who dislikes him." That's true NOW. But as a niners fan, that was less true back in 2010, when we were all ready to run him out of town. That he wanted to stay is a testament to who he is as a person. That he turned it around that year and got those same fans to cheer him on is a testament to who he is as a player (Yes, Harbaugh helped. But Smith still had to make the throws).
For everything that man did for our 9ers, and everything we put hin through. That man has more resolve than I can ever fathom. Nothing but love and respect!
There were some tough years with Alex as a niners fan but dude was always a warrior and was incredibly level headed. Hated how his time ended with the team
Thanks for doing this video and giving Smith the props he deserves. I'd hardly call him a bust, but he was looking that way for a while. More so a product of inept management and coaching to start his career.
You dare mock me for thinking I would forget the number 1 draft pick out of Utah, my alma mater and the 2020 comeback player of the year who was one of the few moments of goodness in the hellscape that was the pandemic and lead the WFT to the playoffs because the NFC East was the peak of comedy that year?"
He was not always a middle of the pack QB. His career high passer rating was 75 on his rookie deal. Year 5 and 6 he was mediocre, then he became average in year 7 with Harbaugh before going to KC and becoming a solid middle of the pack QB.
its truly sad how Alex Smith Busted, and if you look at the odds many of these young men in this years draft are gonna bust, its really crazy how big some guys bust, busting is just first nature for top NFL prospects i guess
As a Chiefs fan since the early 90's, I will never forget Alex. He was a shining light that brought honor back to our organization. He paved the road for Patrick to succeed and achieve more than any of us thought he could. Thank you Alex.
Thank you for this video, Brandon. Smith will forever be a legend in KC. He helped make the Chiefs relevant and competitive again. And he was not only the mentor that Mahomes needed, but the one he deserved. Thank you, Alex, for everything.

Alex Smith is one of the greatest human beings on the planet. There’s no question. The guy just doesn’t give up and he’s so humble. I remember watching multiple games he’s down by 20 in the 4th quarter and he’s running on every 3rd down to keep the drive alive
Not "unrelated". As Perna explained, Smith was replaced by Mahomes. And, though he knew Mahomes was going to replace him, he mentored him very well. And Mahomes was the reason he went to Washington. Hardly "unrelated" to the story.
The 28-3 joke reminded me - I was in New Orleans recently and while walking around looking for a place to eat I noticed a "28-3" flag hanging from a balcony New Orleans Saints fans: some of the best haters in the game
Dude was 38-36-1 in San Francisco. Most people count someone a bust if they did basically nothing for the team they were drafted to. 81 TDs and 63 interceptions in 6 seasons + a missed season due to injury is not good. So tell me, is a average of 14 TDs, 10 interceptions, and 2,380 pass yards across 6 seasons good? No, it’s horrible. This guy was the 1st pick and all he did for the 49ers was get them a 2nd round pick from KC
Good arguments here. I've been thinking it for a few years now. Conventional knowledge used to be that the QB position is too complicated to start in right away. But that changed like 15 years ago and now instead of developing anyone we just cast them aside and draft a new QB and repeat. How many good qbs got shafted?
People are disagreeing with the premise of the video, you don't need to hear the whole thing to know why "bust" doesn't accurately describe Alex Smith's pro career. Busts don't make pro bowls
@manwithnewname if you watched the video then you would know that "Alex Smith was a bust" was not the premise of the video. It's about how he shirked the bust label after a rough start.
@@bigfat4172 did you watch him play? he was good enough to be the 49ers starter for years. For a 1st ovr pick he was disappointing for sure but you can't decide who's a draft bust from their rookie season. By year 4 he was solid. Aside from Aaron Rodgers he was probably the best QB drafted that year.
As a Chiefs fan we will always love and appreciate Alex Smith for not only changing the trajectory of our franchise but also being a great leader and mentor to Mahomes specifically as well as just being a great dude KC ❤️ AS11
It's pretty interesting that the two young QBs Alex mentored ended up in super bowls. He absolutely had a positive role in helping Kaepernick and Mahomes develop. While Smith did displayed well earned frustration at times, there really never was a single moment where any of us thought "what a diva". He genuinely seems like a good dude, and I don't think anyone in the world got a bigger cheer than the moment he decided to wear an Aarold Donald vest and walked away just fine. Who is more resilient than Smith? Honestly can't think of anyone.
Alex Smith is such a stand up guy. He deserved a standing ovation to finish his career. He wasn’t the greatest of all time but he certainly is a great person and I’m happy that I got a mini figure of him from a Kinder Surprise ❤
Great coverage of Alex. As a Chiefs fan, he really showed up and played great. He was #2 in passing yards one year and like you said, threw least interceptions. That is beyond winning football, that is pro bowl level (which you reported.) Also from my perspective, we did have an issue with him in that he'd not attempt long passes, even when receivers were open during a span with the Chiefs. And, when he did, it showed long passes were not his strong suit. But, at the end with KC, he was throwing and connecting on long passes more. That may be due in part to Tyreek. I think you did a good job of explaining it, which is that Alex was near the top QB, stats, wins and all, and was even playing his BEST, right when he got let go for the upstart. Finally, PM15 to this day, as does Andy and all of us in the kingdom, give Alex Smith so much credit for how he helped get Pat up and going in one year. Alex will always be loved in KC. At least you (Perna) and the Kingdom agree on that.
Niners fan in MD here. He came to the league when we were awful, he was set up for failure. I felt terrible for how he was shown the back door out, and was happy he did better in KC. And then KC did the same!! And then the leg, which was heartbreaking. I wish he’d been on the field when the Niners played the WFT here in Landover, I really wanted to cheer for him that day.
How Perna makes this vid and doesn't include anything about the Christmas day double-doink game between KC/Den is beyond me. One of my favorite regular season games of all time. Back and forth with some amazing plays - also an amazing Smith comeback.
I wouldn't call him a bust. If he and rodgers swapped places in the draft, the bust label never would have been applied. But he was a solid career, made 3 pro bowls, led the league in passer rating one year, and led his teams to 6 playoff appearances out of 12 possible opportunities. (I'm discounting Kaepernick's year and the 2 years he was injured all season in 2008 and 2019)
I was a teenager when Smith arrived in KC. I grew up expecting the Chiefs to be bad no matter what they did. They put up 4-12 and 2-14 seasons like they were business as usual, and I didn't think there was a need to watch games. Smith's contributions to the Chiefs are, no exaggeration, completely invigorating. The fact that he put up solid numbers, played smart football, AND embraced his role as Mahomes' mentor meant so much for fans like me. He wasn't lighting up stat sheets, but without Alex Smith, I probably wouldn't be a football fan. He did a lot for Kansas City, even if Mahomes' accomplishments overshadow his own. I couldn't be happier with what he achieved.
I’ve said this so many times and I’m glad Perna agrees. San Francisco Alex Smith would’ve been out of the league by year 3 or 4 if he put up those numbers anywhere else. San Francisco believed in him even when he was benched for Shaun Hill and JT O’Sullivan
One of the biggest what ifs for me is what if alex smith played in that 2012 superbowl. Fun to think about but also i feel like the ravens were just on fire
As an Washington fan when he came over he was playing good to solid ball, leading the Redskins to if an pretty good record (probably too good for our team) before the injury happened Then in 2020 it felt so surreal seeing him come back out onto the field and play again. Especially after knowing he almost died from that leg injury
Alex Smith is a solid human being. I watched that Colts game, it was a glorious day watching the 9er's get dominated. I had moved to KC by the time Alex Smith made it to the Chiefs. Super great guy. Jamal Charles was about %40 of the Chiefs total offense during the Alex Smith years.
I hated the fact that we (Chiefs) went to get another SF QB, but Alex Smith played his heart out for us. That man will always be respected in my house.
A good evening cup of Benchwarmer Brew before my fifth class of the day while watching one of the GOATs of our era dissect Alex Smith’s career better than ESPN professionals. Excellent work as always Perna. Waiting for Tom to get back so we get GPS again…
As a lifelong 49er fan I remember all of Alex's efforts. Nothing was more gut wrenching than watching him throw over the middle or ANY crossing route. In my house we called him "High-and-behind Smith" because that's where the pass was gonna be.
I dunno if Alex Smith was a bust. He struggled until Harbaugh came to San Fran and after that he had consistent success with Andy Reid. I guess you could argue he was because he was first overall, but i wouldn’t because i think it’s an unfair label. When i think of bust i think of guys like Ryan Leaf or Zach Wilson, I would call Alex Smith’s career underwhelming or average instead of bust
As a niners fan that 2011 divisional against the saints is still my favorite game ever. Thought him and Harbaugh worked great together, though I liked Kap too
The number of comments complaining about Perna calling him a bust is humorous. The ethos is that he *was* a bust and then revived his career. So many people seem to read titles then comment, without watching the damn video
Highest passer rating in the nfl in 2017 and a three time pro bowler. Far from a bust even if he was a 1st overall pick. Better than Bradford, Demarcus Russell, Winston, Tim Coach and arguably had a better career than Andrew Luck

I remember the first game he played with the chiefs against the niners in SF he got a standing ovation and a lot of love from the fans.
I’m sorry but Alex Smith is not a bust.
Watch the video first before commenting.
@AlanRoyJuicegate We don't have to. Perna is the most predictable creator on the planet.
@@ThemanwhosaidsorryI know the history of Alex Smiths career, nothing he says is going to change the facts.
He was the definition of a bust for the 6 straight seasons.
@@thatsgoodsportsand after he got good coaching support he flourished, so how was it his fault?
Alex Smith is forever a Chiefs legend for helping Mahomes develop. Thank you Mr. Smith!
How can I forget Alex?? One of the best wins I ever see my beloved Niners pull was that game against the Saints, so he will live in my memory rent free for as long as I live!
Alex is one of my favorite players of all time. What he overcame to find success is remarkable.
I didn't see the Alex Smith injury when it happened, but I do remember it going from "your season is over" to "your career might be over" to "we might have to amputate your leg or you may die".
I love you guys, and the fact that nobody remembers how bad Alex Smith was for his 1st 6 seasons might make him the most forgotten Draft Bust ever lol.
don't let em get to you ! you made solid points
As a Seahawks fan, oh I remember…. WE WERE BOTH GARBAGE AT THAT TIME!!!!
When you're right, you're right. Don't let rose-tinted nostalgia for the back half of his career make you question your reasoning.
Even in his peak smith wasn’t a #1 overall pick level qb
I'm sorry, but that's just a dumb take. You don't make multiple pro bowls and be a bust. I'm not saying he was ever elite, or even great. But he was far from a bust.
I know you hate the Chiefs, but he means a lot to us.. Smith is a great guy
Kinda of a Chad henne type of guy to the chiefs. Always a important part of the comeup
@Will_i_amfr Henne is my all-time favorite Chiefs back up.. we don't win some playoff games if it weren't for Henne
@@taylorgant1209 swear. Every time he went on I wasn’t super worried. Always felt like we still had a good chance, and he really did do everything we asked him to do and then some. Shame he retired, happy he got a ring
@Will_i_amfr Yes, he deserves it for sure.
"Haven't met a Niners fan who dislikes him."
That's true NOW.
I've never seen anyone lose their mind so fast during the KC part of this video, Mahomes definitely is Perna's nightmare
Alex Smith isn't a bust
He had a rough career until Harbaugh got there but he was a good QB for many years
Should probably watch the video before you comment.
He was still a first pick qb that never was a franchise guy. A bust
@@petey34 I was about to say lol. Like this is literally what the video said, but I guess the title didn't really help much.
Ya may want to watch the video
@@DiamondDust132 I mean the title does say “draft bust” and not “overall bust” 😂
I love to hear Perna say nice things about a Chiefs quarterback ; )
For everything that man did for our 9ers, and everything we put hin through. That man has more resolve than I can ever fathom. Nothing but love and respect!
The bed for your daughter is adorable. Dude is a great parent
There were some tough years with Alex as a niners fan but dude was always a warrior and was incredibly level headed. Hated how his time ended with the team
Broncos would be a contender with Alex Smith
Thanks for doing this video and giving Smith the props he deserves. I'd hardly call him a bust, but he was looking that way for a while. More so a product of inept management and coaching to start his career.
Underwhelming sure, but definitely not a bust.
Watch the video
You dare mock me for thinking I would forget the number 1 draft pick out of Utah, my alma mater and the 2020 comeback player of the year who was one of the few moments of goodness in the hellscape that was the pandemic and lead the WFT to the playoffs because the NFC East was the peak of comedy that year?"
You mean 2020 Alex Smith Award (seriously just name the trophy after him)
He didn’t live up to the hype, but he was always middle of the pack QB
He was not always a middle of the pack QB. His career high passer rating was 75 on his rookie deal. Year 5 and 6 he was mediocre, then he became average in year 7 with Harbaugh before going to KC and becoming a solid middle of the pack QB.
He is a better person than Aaron Rodgers.
@@thomasdeas1941 That is what is called a "low bar." And that is no knock on Smith. Rodgers is beneath contempt.

its truly sad how Alex Smith Busted, and if you look at the odds many of these young men in this years draft are gonna bust, its really crazy how big some guys bust, busting is just first nature for top NFL prospects i guess
As a Chiefs fan since the early 90's, I will never forget Alex. He was a shining light that brought honor back to our organization. He paved the road for Patrick to succeed and achieve more than any of us thought he could. Thank you Alex.
I was surprised no one tried to call him last year and give him a workout. Wife probably wouldn't want him to risk what is left of his leg.
Thank you for this video, Brandon. Smith will forever be a legend in KC. He helped make the Chiefs relevant and competitive again. And he was not only the mentor that Mahomes needed, but the one he deserved. Thank you, Alex, for everything.

Hey Perna! Just wanted to say your videos brighten my day, keep it up!
I loved seeing the clips of Alex killing my lobos 😂 good picks Perna
Lol, I really enjoyed the highlights of all those Chiefs playoff failures as well🤣🙁
So thankful for Alex in KC, not only did he begin to build more of a winning culture, he also was the reason Patrick was able to hit the ground running.
I remember Alex Smith had to throw to Dwayne Bowe who just didn’t like the end zone.
😂😂😂
Did not play with Dwane.
@@kurtkloster856 Someone doesn't know their shit. He had two whole seasons with him (2013-2014). The 2013 and 2014 Chiefs offenses were awful to watch, especially because of Dwayne Bowe.
I mean he led the league in receiving touch downs with Matt cassle throwing to him in 2010…
Alex Smith cliff notes
First 6 years: missed a season, and only played one full season. Losing record each of 5 seasons.
Next 9 seasons: winning record each year, 3 Pro Bowls and Comeback Player of the Year
Hot Take: if the 49ers played Smith in the Superbowl, they would've won.
Fun Fact: the Metal structure that kept Smith's leg Together is converted into Lombardi-Shaped Trophy and gifted to Alex.
Whaaat
Alex had a higher ceiling than 9ers fans got to see. He had to essentially change programs like, every season. He’d be a great quarterback coach
As a fellow Broncos fan, I felt that unhinged moment about Mahomes deep in my soul
As a Chiefs fan my whole life this video almost brought me to tears, will always love Alex and appreciate everything he embodies and everything he did for everyone around him, truly a special human being
Objectively he was bust. Subjectively, I will always remember 11 handing the ball to 25.
Thanks for doing this on Alex Smith. Class act and did amazing recovery. Yes, you are right, there are many of teams, and organizations that have thrown rookie QBs the the wolves and many of them did not make it out alive.
He definitely wasn’t a bust
Was really surprised by the title because I remember him as being a threat, glad you like him, he's a talented and courageous person
Wouldn’t call him a bust, just disappointing
When your team can’t draft for crap it happens
thats what a bust is
@@BroncosCountry58 A bust is someone who never pulls it together. To the ones he drafted, he's a bust, to KC, he is a hero who prepared Mahomes for the top level, to the Commanders, he's a decent QB who got brutally injured.
It definitely depends on who you talk to is how you get an opinion of people
@@BroncosCountry58 not necessarily. A disappointment is a term that I use for players that never live up to expectations, whereas busts are so bad that they tank an entire franchise and do NOTHING. Dissapointments succeed more than busts

Alex Smith is one of the greatest human beings on the planet. There’s no question. The guy just doesn’t give up and he’s so humble. I remember watching multiple games he’s down by 20 in the 4th quarter and he’s running on every 3rd down to keep the drive alive
Mahomes sneaks his way into yet another unrelated football topic. god DAMMIT.
Brandon “Patrick Mahomes is my sleep paralysis demon” Perna 😂
Not "unrelated". As Perna explained, Smith was replaced by Mahomes. And, though he knew Mahomes was going to replace him, he mentored him very well. And Mahomes was the reason he went to Washington. Hardly "unrelated" to the story.
@@mathewfullerton8577 oh man, thank you so much. now I understand.
Beautiful tribute Brandon. Alex Smith is one of my football heroes and will never be forgotten.
Anyone who comes back from that injury is not a bust
The 28-3 joke reminded me - I was in New Orleans recently and while walking around looking for a place to eat I noticed a "28-3" flag hanging from a balcony
New Orleans Saints fans: some of the best haters in the game
99-67-1 isn’t a bust! You and the broncos would literally die for a Denver Qb to finish with a record like that
Dude was 38-36-1 in San Francisco.
Perna, we may not agree on a lot of things, but we definitely agree on this! Thank you
Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl and only got there once so he was a bust. There’s your next video
I got super excited to see you were going balls deep into Alex Smith.
Yall are saying he wasn’t a bust but he was a first overall pick. First overall picks are not supposed to be journeymen
Good arguments here. I've been thinking it for a few years now. Conventional knowledge used to be that the QB position is too complicated to start in right away. But that changed like 15 years ago and now instead of developing anyone we just cast them aside and draft a new QB and repeat. How many good qbs got shafted?
The sheer amount of people commenting to disagree on a 24 minute video within 2 minutes of the video's release is...interesting lol
Much like a bunch of today's society, respond reactionary as if you were personally attacked.
@@manwithnewname who are you talking to lol? I didn't say anything about Smith sucking. I love Alex Smith.
As a Chiefs fan we will always love and appreciate Alex Smith for not only changing the trajectory of our franchise but also being a great leader and mentor to Mahomes specifically as well as just being a great dude KC ❤️ AS11
Alex Smith is by no means a bust.
I place Geno Smith in a similar category. Some players legit just need a lot more time maybe bouncing around a bit before they fully bloom as players.
(I'm discounting Kaepernick's year and the 2 years he was injured all season in 2008 and 2019)
One of the greatest injury comebacks of all time, if not the greatest. It's a miracle he could even walk again. Kudos to the guy for being a true pro.
The Tim Tebow clips never stop to amaze or inspire me
I’ve said this so many times and I’m glad Perna agrees.
22:44 "And that's why Smith will always be one of my favorite quarterbacks to ever play."
Did not expect that, Perna. Good stuff.
As an Washington fan when he came over he was playing good to solid ball, leading the Redskins to if an pretty good record (probably too good for our team) before the injury happened
Then in 2020 it felt so surreal seeing him come back out onto the field and play again. Especially after knowing he almost died from that leg injury
His game vs the Saints was GOLD! GOLD, Jerry!
Thank You, Mr. Perna.
I never knew what dink and dunk meant when Ben Roethlisberger claimed the Steelers needed to stop doing it. Then I saw an Alex Smith game
