Yeah I kinda wanna see Howell if he takes any snaps for Seattle this season. I feel like he did reasonably well considering how shitty his team was and draft position.
I've felt this problem started thanks to the Steelers reaching the AFC Championship Game with a rookie Big Ben. He was an immediate contributor, so teams started believing every rookie QB should be that way, completely forgetting that those Steelers were already Super Bowl contenders, & Big Ben was the missing piece. Same situation with Mahomes in KC.
QB is the most mysterious position in football It just all depends on the teams they got drafted by the players around him and the coaches Some players needed a certain coach to unlock there potential Mahomes on the Bears roster would probably be a different Mahomes from today Some QBs thrive year 1 similar to Stroud and others need to sit on the bench first Brady, Rodgers etc..
You would think in a copycat league like the NFL they would take the Chiefs or GB approach and have their rookie QB sit behind an established veteran like Alex Smith or Aaron Rodgers. Mahomes is the outlier to end all outliers because the Chiefs built a team before taking Mahomes but I digress.
I was recently reminded of Ian Book’s existence recently in Madden Franchise mode, when I played against him on the saints. This wasn’t the original Ian Book either, this was an AI create-a-character that was also named Ian book with the same jersey number(#16).
You literally said at the end what I quoted to one of the local broadcasters on his RUclips page (1 out of 10 QBs taken in the first round will actually be a franchise QB) - and he said my numbers were off. Yeah, not so much.
Depends on what you consider a franchise QB. Like do you just mean a guy good enough to get a second contract? Or does he have to be a "franchise player," literally a franchise changing QB. If it's the latter, then it's even less than 1 in 10. There's maybe 3 of those guys in the NFL right now. If you just mean a decent starter, it's probably closer to 1 in 2.
@@robertcampbell8070 I just mean a QB good enough that you don't have to go looking for another one. Ideally, it's a QB that a team feels they can either go deep in the playoffs or to the Superbowl with. But, to answer your question, no not really one that needs a "franchise" tag.
I still remember watching Purdy his freshman year at Iowa State. He was pretty good obviously he had his ups and downs, but you could see the talent and competitiveness he had. Honestly I was surprised he was "Mr. Irrelevant", which he isn't anymore lol
The way I remember that draft playing out is that Purdy was a first round projected QB at the beginning of the season. He was rather mid that year, good but not great and fell because of it.
This video proves my point, the scouts dont know crap about players, they say this guy will go #1 and he flames out, while a late pick or in this case purdy shows the world, scouts dont know what they evaluate
Let’s give Purdy some credit here. I’m a huge ISU fan, even I was shocked to see Purdy play like this. He’s a smart QB that doesn’t crumble under pressure and it’s so much harder to scout for that than it is to scout a guy with a strong arm
@@lunarumbreon7699 He also plays on the best offense (not counting the QB position) in the NFL. No way he does anywhere close to as well on the Panthers or Jags. Lot of talented QBs end up just never getting the chance because the play for poverty teams.

He carries the ball like a loaf of bread. HC should make him carry a football everywhere in training camp and have every other player try to punch it out.,
Honestly that's fair. Some of these fumbles were just him dropping thr ball for no reason like against the eagles in that rainy game. if he could just not.. do that.. and throw a few lass interceptions and convert on 3rd down A little more often he'd Honestly be a top 10 qb, like his stats are actually pretty good other than that, and he has a little something, he can definitely be a winner just not fumbling 4x a game
Trey Lance was basically proof the league doesn't understand qbs as it pertains to scouting. Played half a season really. He rarely played past halftime. Had no real tape. Didn't do the All Star games. He played one game in '20. Against UCA. Didnt play well. Then he had a monster combine. I mean "He must be Him." Type performance. A combine baby. It happens way too often. A guy has one excellent day in shorts throwing to wide open guys. Then, he's "high ceiling" or "raw potential". Its an obvious flaw they refuse to deal with.
@@MikeHarvey-ol7xr it's even crazier than that. You're a fellow tape rat, I'm assuming. You mentioned some things only a rat would notice. 1. Beyond the 0 int, he had less than 10 contested passes all year. That's not just a red flag, that drops you off the board if the scouts understand football. He played in a ridiculously basic scheme. 2. That scheme was because of him. He's not a high IQ player. He never, ever called an audible and check downs were slim to none. Again, a good scout understands that means one of three things: 1. The coaches are ignorant and don't know how to scheme. Not likely considering that HC took over at KSU and has revolutionized that offense. 2. They don't trust him. If you're not giving him options, that's because he can't be trusted to understand when and why. 3. He's an airhead. His interviews confirmed this. Shanahan didn't want him, but McDaniel and the owner were sold. The brass forced the pick. Shanny knew it was a waste from go. In this case it's 2 and 3. He just didn't have it, but because of Wentz and the spotlight on that program (NDSU during the 5 year period from Wentz to Lance lost 0.3 games a year, and, they had more players drafted in that time than the rest of fcs combined) and him going off in Indy, he got the "Needle" treatment. As in they thought they'd found the needle in the haystack. The Lawrence draft had 4 "Needles". Only Trevor remains. Teams feel forced to draft a QB in the first. It's killing the league.
@@MikeHarvey-ol7xr one more thing: Nobody develops QBs anymore. They just assume they're ready and will grow into it. Manning, Rodgers, Brady, Mahomes, Cousins and Brees all sat a year or more. The NFL did this to itself because of one player: Andrew Luck. He broke the mold and the game as a whole. Everyone is looking for the next Luck. The best "new" QB this year was Love. What did he get to do that the others didn't? Sit and learn. Levis is next.....
with all due respect to every trey lance hater gathered here, HE HAS NOT HAD ENOUGH PLAYING TIME TO JUDGE WHETHER HE IS A BUST OR NOT. i still think after dallas’ terrible “all in” free agency, they should start him over dak prescott and see if he’s the guy. depending on his performance, you either cut dak and build around trey or pay dak and tank for a top 5 pick next year. then again, jerry jones is an idiot who won’t do those things because he doesn’t want his team to be better
Brandon makes a great point about how teams will do crazy things when they are desperate to get a quarterback. Chiefs weren’t completely desperate when they drafted Patrick Mahomes since they already had Alex Smith, a solid QB. The Broncos were desperate and traded for (and extended) Russell Wilson.
@@ryanjones875 Never watched him as a 9er. In Reids system he played really solid... his last season with the Chiefs he threw for over 4,000 yds with 26 TDs and 5 ints. He just didn't have 'it' to do anything in the playoffs. Of course he was older and nearing the end of his career with the Chiefs. Even Mahomes had credited him with his mentorship and professionalism.
Fields is a victim of bad timing since he was drafted by a coach and GM who were both on the hot seat trying to save their jobs. This was mostly because Ryan Pace's roster construction sucked as he constantly traded picks to move up in the draft and only did the bare minimum to improve the o-line and skill positions. And when Pace finally did draft a tackle, he needed back surgery and missed half his rookie season - which has been a recurring theme since the last super bowl appearance for them. Nagy on the other hand failed Justin by putting him in as a starter far too soon against an opportunistic Browns defense led by Myles Garrett while implementing a game plan that envisioned using Andy Dalton passing from the pocket. He got sacked like 10 times in his first game and the sacks never stopped coming. Big Dick Nick Foles who was second on the depth chart should have gotten the start against the Browns and let Justin start against an easier opponent. Nagy continued to not tailor the game plans to Justin's strengths the rest of the season and both he and Pace were gone at the end. Poles has been very diplomatic in his wait-and-see approach to Justin's development, but ultimately his slow development and inconsistent play have led Poles to move in a different direction. I wish Justin all the best in his second chance with the Steelers because he's a good dude with very obvious talent that needs to be harnessed and have the wrinkles in his game ironed out. And I look forward to the dawning of the Caleb Williams era in Chicago and hope that maybe, just maybe fortune smiles upon the Bears at the quarterback position. Even the Cubs eventually won a World Series, no?
The guy shouldn't have been drafted before the 4th round. He HAD to have known that he was in no way ready for the NFL. He could have stayed another year in North Dakota, he saw that there was a chance to steal a bunch of money and took it. If not, he actually believed the hype about himself and that's arguably even worse. He has a chance to show out in Dallas, let's see what he shows us in the pre-season.
As a 49ers fan who has seen him play I wouldn’t say so the guy reads the field like braille and decision making is as good as Kanye’s he’s like a downgraded justin feilds
Let me put it this way. 2021 was a very hard year to judge the QB class just because a lot of them played a shortened 2020 season because of COVID-19. I don't blame the scouts for putting guys like Zach Wilson and Trey Lance that high because those guys played more games in 2020 than most of the QBs in that class. The same went for 2022. Although a bunch of highly touted QBs had down years in 2021 which is why they slid in the draft. The 2023 QB class needs time as well, but there's also the feeling that like most times when a QB is considered a bust, it has little to do with him but with how inept those organizations are when it comes to surrounding the QB with a talented Offensive Line. Whats the point of a top QB if he doesn't have a freaking line long term.
Zach Wilson went into a horrible situation. The O-line was awful. Most highly drafted QB’s are going to horrible teams which kills them. While lower 1st round teams don’t need QB’s. That’s why I like the Green Bay model of developing a QB behind another QB. That’s why I wish the Broncos kept R. Wilson and then draft a QB to sit behind him for a year.
@@runriot-ke3cv - Trey Lance had one year at a FCS school and he absolutely needed to hit the ground running with that team. He didn't. I don't think he could process Shanahan's offfense. That was why Shanahan was having him run a QB keeper into the line (the play he got injured on).
The QB's this year are good, but some may fail because they are going to crap teams with no weapons and no O-line Their confidence will get shot and they will fail
Another great video Perna. The scariest thing about the Niners is they've made 3 straight NFC championships AFTER fucking up that massive trade for Lance. If they got literally anything out of those 3 first round picks, they should reasonably have a ring or two.
You make a good point about needing about 4 or 5 years to judge a qb I feel like I have a much better grasp on the 2018 qb class than the 2019 qb class
What went wrong is too many nfl scouts, and talking heads of the media boosted these dudes up so much for not proving anything. So many came from dominant programs where they really didn’t have to be a smart qb, they just had to deliver the rock- and now they realize that you gotta break down blitzes zone coverages etc…maybe scouts will learn
Trevor was having a good season before the injuries started piling up. High ankle sprain, knee sprain, sprained shoulder and a concussion. They were 8-3 and he had something like a 17-7 TD to interception ratio. He had absolutely zero running game and a number 1 receiver (Ridley) that didn’t know the playbook and was constantly running the wrong routes. He also dropped numerous wide open touchdowns. The o-line was statistically the worst in football in pass pro and run blocking. That said, Trevor does need to stop fucking fumbling!!!!😂
Perfect take, I think it's a little bit of hero ball syndrome, needs to protect the ball, not cut inside and try to dive over people like he's cmc or something. It could also be adjusting to the ball, maybe hand size and grip?? Like he didn't do this in college, its like he couldn't fumble and if he did he always got back on it, then he gets in the nfl and takes off to run and just drops it, if I were him I'd honestly just start cradling the ball like a power rb any time he tries to run it. Just to be sure
@@jimbo0386 i truly think he’s just trying to overcompensate for how bad the o-line is. He’s trying to do too much. 2022 showed what he can do if he just has a little time to throw.
@@123shoshan ok? What does that have to do with Trevor? That doesn’t discredit my statement. Burrow also had a much better supporting cast around him in Chase, Higgins and Mixon. He had receivers that could get open early and often when Joe needed them to. Also, I stated that Trevor was playing well and had that team at 8-3 in spite of the bad o-line play. It was when he started getting hurt that he couldn’t mask how bad the line actually was any longer.
Me with a smug grin on my face telling people I told you so/called it with these QBs. And that even goes for Purdy being successful in the NFL! As a Cyclone fan it was easy to call it on him with me watching him in college. And I am smart enough to know why. And no one on here is going to believe me either.
Blame the fans and owners. Everyone has lost perspective and patience. They think you have to be a playoff or Superbowl team the year you're drafted if you're a quarterback. If you struggle, then you're s bust. Not realizing what entails playing the position. They look at CJ Stroud and think he has to replicate that type of season while not realizing that that's a rarity.
It's not fans and owners. It's the market..after Rookie deals, QBs are expensive. The most expensive contracts with most guaranteed money. Market and cap space pretty much forces teams to make hard decisions after a few seasons.
I think it's worth pointing out that all QB's drafted in the 1st round from the 2020 draft are all starting in this coming season. This could be more exception to the rule though but worth noting. Some teams just suck at drafting too.
@@pigdroppings seriously. The massive gap of pay is downright criminal. All these new rules and how the league panders to qbs doesn’t help either. If the league pushed for more rushes and defense you’d see a a more spread out cap.

I still think Trevor Lawrence will be a top 5 qb... I just don't think it will be with the Jags. I mean, there are some teams that always seem to have a good QB and some teams that have never had one... It's not a coincidence... Drafting is only half the battle; the other half is properly developing your young QB and building your scheme around his strengths.
Ironically, the guys who've benefited the most are the mid-level/journeymen QBs (guys like Minshew, Brisett, maybe Flacco) since teams seem so trigger happy with moving on from the young ones when they're not working right from the start.
In my opinion, Trey Lance is the biggest draft bust in nfl history if you look at the whole situation. 3 first rounders sent to Miami to get him and he did absolutely nothing. I understand the draft picks the 49ers lost didn’t hurt them super bad but just think what they could have done with them.
I agree with Mac Jones on the coaching changes stifling his growth. Look what Alex Smith went through his first 5 seasons. They went through 3 head coaches and 5 offensive coordinators. It wasn't until Harbaugh came along that they found out he was actually very good. I always thought that Aaron Rodgers would have been destroyed by that instead of the star he became if he would have been drafted by the Niners.
“If we see 5 qbs taken in the 2024 draft im scared ill be making the same video in 2 years” -fast forward to 6 qbs going in the top 12 with 2 outrageous reaches and qb where nobody knows why people really like him
You have to take into account where he is and the weapons he has. If Trevor was on a good team with weapons and a decent O-line then he would be a top 5 QB
As one those much hated Vikings fans i still love your content. What your saying here is exactly what ive been trying to tell people. Its my personal feeling that Denver may possibly end up looking like draft day kings down the road by ending up with the 5th or 6th QB. If you look at the last 20 years of drafts you have almost as many hits in rounds 2-5 as you do in the first. The highest draft position would probably be Josh Allen and he wasn't even taken in the top five. All this trade up and qb run talk feels like insanity. Maybe the nfl should rename this years draft to "your hitting yourself, quit hitting yourself, why are you still hitting yourself?"
You say the worst thing for a QB is changing coaches/coordinators. Would be interested to see a video on all the coach turnover for Justin Herbert throughout college and NFL
10:25 I think you really hit the nail on the head there. Teams always seem wowed by QBs "awesome college production" and stats...and it's like well yeah half of CFB games have videogame numbers. Can they play accordingly when the other team is much better than theirs? XD
People forget how many guys don’t work out. If there’s 5 QB’s drafted in the 1st chances are only 1 is Great, 1 is good enough, other will be hated by their fans or traded by 2026
From what I’ve heard from people in Oxford, Matt Corral has had some real struggles with his mental health. Took a year to find himself. It seems like he’s back on the come up and I really hope he can succeed in the UFL and maybe move into a backup NFL role. He’s a good dude who I hope can find success.
Broncos might honestly be smart to trade up for a qb. Next year there’s a high chance Shedur goes number 1 overall, but also a high chance he pulls an Eli if they draft him
I feel like Denver should sit back and get a QB they like when they get a chance. We are in rebuild mode and it's going to take a few seasons to get out from under that cap so we need to be hoarding all future picks at this point. Besides Denver obviously can't pick QBs so we'd probably wiff anyway, better to take a chance later where just as many star QBs have been found as the first round.
@@tim6454 there aren’t “just as many star qbs” in later rounds though. There’s only a handful of current starter qbs that were taken in later rounds atm. The broncos are honestly more screwed then any atm
The spread offense and the prevalence of athletic running QBs has made the rookie contract QB a worthwhile investment. Additionally, a bad pick doesn't set a team back for 5 years anymore.
one expert said it before the best way to be draft proof is just to trade down and get as many picks as possible. because most people always get them wrong, thats just how math works. so having more picks will shield you from misses. and rookie wage is so cheap, hitting 1 or 2 is save you like 10-15m a year vs veteran pros.
I'm tired of hearing people tear into BYU's schedule that year. They were at least playing DI teams, unlike North Dakota State. Yeah I kinda wanna see Howell if he takes any snaps for Seattle this season. I feel like he did reasonably well considering how shitty his team was and draft position.
Looking at YOU Deshone Kizer 👀
I've felt this problem started thanks to the Steelers reaching the AFC Championship Game with a rookie Big Ben. He was an immediate contributor, so teams started believing every rookie QB should be that way, completely forgetting that those Steelers were already Super Bowl contenders, & Big Ben was the missing piece. Same situation with Mahomes in KC.
QB is the most mysterious position in football
It just all depends on the teams they got drafted by the players around him and the coaches
Some players needed a certain coach to unlock there potential
Mahomes on the Bears roster would probably be a different Mahomes from today
Some QBs thrive year 1 similar to Stroud and others need to sit on the bench first Brady, Rodgers etc..

Its more like a "dontgototheseorganisations", for example the Jets are like a cemetary of talented QBs.

Virtually all starters, save a couple, are 1st round draft picks if not top 10 picks. I would say the scouts do OK.
Never trusted them 😂
@@lunarumbreon7699 He also plays on the best offense (not counting the QB position) in the NFL. No way he does anywhere close to as well on the Panthers or Jags. Lot of talented QBs end up just never getting the chance because the play for poverty teams.

Brandon please. My lunch break is only so long. Stop making so much good content
12:15 so Trevor loses his fumbles 64% of the time? Thats > 2x the average of the other 5 worst QBs (27%) ? Thats crazy!
And having NO INT's for a season is a red flag. No tight window throws. No throws under duress. No resemblance to the NFL game.
Again, a good scout understands that means one of three things:
Shanahan's biggest failure was drafting Trey Lance.
That whole draft pick and what it cost was an epic fail by Kyle and the 49ers
with all due respect to every trey lance hater gathered here, HE HAS NOT HAD ENOUGH PLAYING TIME TO JUDGE WHETHER HE IS A BUST OR NOT. i still think after dallas’ terrible “all in” free agency, they should start him over dak prescott and see if he’s the guy.
depending on his performance, you either cut dak and build around trey or pay dak and tank for a top 5 pick next year. then again, jerry jones is an idiot who won’t do those things because he doesn’t want his team to be better
Alex Smith was never a solid QB. Reid had to take out half the playbook to make him look viable. Great guy and though.
@@ryanjones875Alex Smith WAS a solid QB... he was just never a great QB who was gonna take the Chiefs deep into the playoffs.
@@ForsakenWar Sorry, I watched all his games. He was anything but solid. Possibly the most overrated QB of all time. Nice guy, though.
@@ForsakenWar Go back and watch the film. Somehow people forget how he actually played. Set the 49ers back for almost a decade.
Trey Lance could still get a chance if a needy team takes a shot on him.
😅
The Commies are the only team I could see being that desperate
Problem with Lance was he was supposed to be the guy, but within a year became apparent he was the third best QB in his team.
As a 49ers fan who has seen him play I wouldn’t say so the guy reads the field like braille and decision making is as good as Kanye’s he’s like a downgraded justin feilds
Perna much love for making me laugh on a bad day! You rock. I always knew you would get big when Ryan told me many years ago!
So Zach would have done better if he had been drafted by, say, the 49ers...like Trey L... eh, never mind.
Zach's attitude didn't help though. Bro has the vibe of a middle school bully, and his only notable accomplishment is his cougar hunt.
@@runriot-ke3cv - Trey Lance had one year at a FCS school and he absolutely needed to hit the ground running with that team. He didn't. I don't think he could process Shanahan's offfense. That was why Shanahan was having him run a QB keeper into the line (the play he got injured on).

I mean, there are some teams that always seem to have a good QB and some teams that have never had one... It's not a coincidence...
Drafting is only half the battle; the other half is properly developing your young QB and building your scheme around his strengths.
Some mocks had Malik Willis going 2nd overall. I said if they took him and not Aiden Hutchinson, it would be the most Detroit Lions move possible.
Most rookie QBs need to sit. Mahomes sat. Rodgers sat. Jackson sat. The Manning brothers and Matt Stafford are the exception, not the rule.

A NFL team drafting a college QB is like a crap shoot....

XD

From what I’ve heard from people in Oxford, Matt Corral has had some real struggles with his mental health. Took a year to find himself. Do you remember when you were pissed that the Broncos picked Patrick Surtain over Justin Fields? Pepperidge Farms remembers.

The spread offense and the prevalence of athletic running QBs has made the rookie contract QB a worthwhile investment.

one expert said it before the best way to be draft proof is just to trade down and get as many picks as possible. because most people always get them wrong, thats just how math works. so having more picks will shield you from misses. and rookie wage is so cheap, hitting 1 or 2 is save you like 10-15m a year vs veteran pros.
