Oh my God! What memories this brings back. I was just learning to play Bluegrass in the 70's and listened to them all the time. I learned Bluegrass from Larry Smith of the group Keystone out of Brogue Pa. I'm 85 now and still playing. What memories.!
One of the best things about living in the DC area in the 1970s was the dozens of times I got to see the Seldom Scene live. They were so much fun to watch and played off of each other so well. This is a great song but there were so many great songs in their repertoire - Rider, Old Train and so many more.
I'm 64 now. The original cut of this song hit our home on the big vinyl. One of us would by the album, bring it home, then start burning cassettes!! This is a sentimental moment for me...... I'm setting here back in '76.
Love the Seldom Scene & this version was beautiful. Consistently wonderful for 40+ years. I do want to give a shout out to the underrated & lesser known Herb Pederson, who wrote this beautiful tune & sent it to John Duffy for them to consider recording.
Another Great one - glad that Dudley Connell is with them since the Johnson Mountain Boys basically stopped (years ago) - then to my surprise there he was with another fav group "The Scene" great match
Saw the Scene during the Phil Rosenthal era. In fact, one night in Manhattan I saw The Scene in the early evening and then went up to Harlem and saw James Brown, Godfather of Soul.......what a night!
Listening this from so far away (Spain) it sounds rather exotic but... sweet, appealing! Everyone can appreciate the quality of this song and their performers, no need to be American.
this is just beautiful. i love it. it's so obvious how honest and sincere these musicians are.when i listen and watch this...i believe every word they sing and note they play..they know how to capture what music is really about!! it's simply magic
you can't help but love this song and the Scene. i was always a big fan of the Gentlemen and was happy when Duffey and company formed the Scene. i miss all the old band members but the current group is doing a great job. you can close your eyes and almost hear the voices and instrumental breaks of the 1970's band. long live the Scene!!!
I'm sure all the "Scene" will be "doubly" glad now, that they shot this video and additional footage, & that John Starling was there to be a part of it, and a part of this album, also!!! R.I.P. "Dr. John" Starling. You will be VERY MUCH missed, but thru videos, & recordings such as this, you & your music will live on!!!
So many great times at the old Birchmere in Shirlington. Great musicianship. Great material. Great harmonies. Great personality (I'm lookin' at you, Mr. Duffey.) We watched them re-invent Bluegrass for a new generation and put DC at the heart of of "NewGrass" (with a big assist from Lee Michael Dempsey at WAMU). There was that night Linda Ronstadt rose from a table in the very back, and joined them on stage for a couple of tunes. So privileged to be part of it. RIP to all members who have left us, my condolences to their families. (And I'll remember one of my favorite members, singer-guitarist Phil Rosenthal.) My other faves: Sing Me Back Home, Rider, Muddy Water.
Dang, that was good!! Lou Reid really has the chops to do the Duffey high part. That solo by Chris Eldridge was just jaw-dropping, though really the all instrumentals were just phenomenal. I am beyond impressed with this re-make. Perhaps I was expecting a pale imitation--I am chastened--and delighted to be so.😊
Very beautiful song! After watching the video, I remember hearing the album "After Midnight" on a LP when I was ~5 years old (about 1984). I could barely reach the turntable on the shelf, but the music was legendary!
The Seldom Scene made this song popular long before Pederson's recording. i have three different recordings of this song by the scene that i like better than Pederson's versions. that said, i also love Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen version. i'm predominantly of irish decent and have been listing to bluegrass since the late 1940's when buuegrass and country music was called hillbilly music. lots of irish and scottish influence in bluegrass music, especially older blue grass fiddle tunes. love your traditional music but love your BEER BETTER. ken t., usa
i stand corrected!!! you were referring to the seldom scene's recording of the song (wait a minute) WRITTEN by herb petersen and not his RELEASE of the song, sorry. i got my mouth in motion before engaging my brain. (it's the trump syndrome). johnny rivers was the first to release wait a minute in 1974. it's a good country music version that i enjoy. the scene recorded the song for their old train release in 1974. herb petersen released his song in 1976 and herb peterson invented the egg McMuffin. ha ha. i discovered that when i googled him and spelled his name wrong. eight more sentences and i've got the makings for a book. my best to you, yours, and dear old ireland. ken t., usa
LEGENDS! !!! THER WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER CLOSE !!!! the way they have the ability to make you Drift AWAY!!! 100s of bands have covered this and NONE close
I saw this band once, with my dad (and my mom and siblings, but they were tagging along, bluegrass festivals were me and my dad's thing), when I was 10 or so years old. It is a testament to their music, that I am still coming back to listen to them.
...and then young Chris Eldredge keeping the genre alive in his own right with the wild and crazy Punch Brothers. He's a monster string miester for sure...thanks to Poppa Ben and his influential wonder world! I first heard and saw(seen) the 'Scene' 45 yrs. ago and have been hooked ever since. Such an inspiring ensemble!
WoW At nearly 83, the vocals just sound better every time I listen to the scene, as I was there when Duffey first put his vocals out for the audience to get a taste of his style of the music that would be the greatest in urban bluegrass music, now this was back in the summer of 1957, July 4th to be exact. And he went on to group another four music.ons to bring the greatest bluegrass band to the washington D.C. area. Well they can't be replaced, so I'll just have to be greatfull that I've got a collection of the all time gteatest. So to all the scene, my last words would be THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GREAT TIMES I ENJOYED TALKING WITH YOU AND LISTING TO YOUR GREAT MUSIC.. GODS SPEED TO ALL OF YOU. ALLAN RITCH OF THE CABIN JOHN / BETHESDA MD. AREA OF MARYLAND.qaaaqaaaaaaaaqqqqqqqaaaqqqqqqaqqqqqqqqaqqqaaaaaaaqqqqq 7:45 best in urban lluegrass
Thank you so much for posting this> I'm guessing Herb Pederson would be mightily impressed with this version. Gonna buy me this album, was not aware it existed till now. Having Chris talk about it, makes it very special. And of course the reference to Duffey in B is classic !
Still like Herb Pedersen's version but the Seldom Scene brought it to the forefront. Great song. Anyone who can carry a tune can sing this classic song. Herb is underrated. I've enjoyed him since the 60's.
wow, beautiful, I was at pickers supply in Fredericksburg years ago to see Wil Maring and Robert Bowlin Chris was there playing an old D-18, I played on the guitar a bit, it was nice, I played wildwood flower, he asked me to play it again as he was curious about the way I did it, nice Kid, he is very humble, when your that damn good you should be, he is a favorite of mine, love the stuff he did with the string dusters, and I love his humility, one of things I dont like about Billy Strings is he is a bit arrogant, he should hang with Chris he might learn something,,,,
The ability to make the lyrics relate in such a personal sense depends on the performance, and this is a gorgeous one. Such a metaphorical, universal message in this song. Absolutely beautiful. chorus: Wait a minute did I hear you say you're going far away again Try to change it I can't take the lonely nights without your love Out doin' the road get the music done and move along What good does it do play your songs for her and hear her say (chorus) You're rolling along, life's been good to you but even so She comes to you late at night's the time you hear her say (chorus) I'm waitin' for you thirty days and nights without a rest I gotta hold on twenty-five to go to hear you say hey (chorus) repeat 3x Author: Herb Pederson
We have been long time Scene fans in all of their incarnations and even the side act "Chesapeake". Many a Tuesday night was spent in what was an old A&P Grocery Store in Alexandria, VA known as The Birchmere which The Scene was the foundation. It has moved to Del Rey band is now a legendary Bluegrass and Folk venue that I think would not exist without The Seldom Scene. They brought us great old traditionals like Old Train but were the first to cover the Beatles in the Bluegrass genre. Now Ben's son Chris is doing the same with the Punch Brothers. And then there were covers of great Dylan songs like "Boots of Spanish Leather". I just cant say enough about how much this band influenced my love for Bluegrass. To have all these past and current members singing here is amazing. Missing are the great Mike Audridge and John Duffy along with T. Michael Coleman and Moondy Kline. Sorry of I missed someone. And in the background making them sound sooooooo good was at first Billy Wolf and then my good friend Ed Solomon. Thanks everyone.
I love this Group, I have all their music. I don’t know if they have any new CD’S out or not. Fred Durbin and RobbieJo my Rescue Doxie. RobbieJo says hi ya all. Fred Durbin.
RIP Ben Eldridge. Thanks for all the Banjo.
Doesn't get any better . There will never be another Seldom Scene. Some of the best bluegrass ever written.
Oh my God! What memories this brings back. I was just learning to play Bluegrass in the 70's and listened to them all the time. I learned Bluegrass from Larry Smith of the group Keystone out of Brogue Pa. I'm 85 now and still playing. What memories.!
Brilliant brother....keep er going. 73 year old picker here from Australia that has made a pilgrimage to "The Station Inn" in Nashville. 👍👋
"Seldom Scene at the Cellar Door" from the 70's was my introduction to them back in the day. Keep on picking 👋
RIP John Starling. You are loved by millions. Thank you for the fantastic music.
My dad was good friends with John. They’d play their favorite Bluegrass songs together for hours. RIP, John. 😥
One of the best things about living in the DC area in the 1970s was the dozens of times I got to see the Seldom Scene live. They were so much fun to watch and played off of each other so well. My uncle Pete Spencer turned me onto the scene in 79 change my life 4ever,thanks uncle Pete R.i.p
Very few musicians can fill Seldom Scene shoes....the Simpkins brothers have done an admirable job of it.
So wonderful to see Chris Eldredge in here grabbing the torch from his dad and keeping this music alive for future generations.
One of the all time best performances of all time! Stunning!
A national treasure. Well deserving of Smithsonian honors.
The Smithsonian should have the rest of the USS Maine, sunk at the Havana's harbor in order to start a war against Spain, nasty false flag attack...
This song brings back so many memories. I grew up listening to The Seldom Scene, The Country Gentlemen, J. D. Crow and The New South. 👍🏻👊🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Beautiful version. All deceased members could never be replaced, only honored. Lou Reid's vocals are absolutely perfect for this as well as the others
I'm 64 now. The original cut of this song hit our home on the big vinyl. One of us would by the album, bring it home, then start burning cassettes!! This is a sentimental moment for me...... I'm setting here back in '76.
62 year old Arlington boy here.
Where did the time go?
Always loved this song. Their vocals,
harmonies, arrangements, choice of songs made the Seldom Scene a cut above. Excellent musicians too.
Great. Love Dudly's voice.
This song never fails to give me chills!!! What a beautiful beautiful song!
Great song and performance !!!
Love the Seldom Scene & this version was beautiful. Consistently wonderful for 40+ years. I do want to give a shout out to the underrated & lesser known Herb Pederson, who wrote this beautiful tune & sent it to John Duffy for them to consider recording.
He and Chris Hillman do a wonderful job with this song as well
Herb Pedersen is not "lesser known."

Have you listened to Boots of Spanish Leather by these guys? One of my favorites.
They knocked it out of the park....great job. Stand up bass rules!!
this is just beautiful. i love it. it's so obvious how honest and sincere these musicians are.when i listen and watch this...i believe every word they sing and note they play..they know how to capture what music is really about!! it's simply magic
Love this and rest in peace John. Thanks for all the beautiful music.

Absolutely a most beautiful version of this song. So expressive.
Dang, that was good!! Lou Reid really has the chops to do the Duffey high part. That solo by Chris Eldridge was just jaw-dropping, though really the all instrumentals were just phenomenal. I am beyond impressed with this re-make. Perhaps I was expecting a pale imitation--I am chastened--and delighted to be so.😊
Great version!
This song should have won every award in every category known to man .🙋
Very beautiful song! After watching the video, I remember hearing the album "After Midnight" on a LP when I was ~5 years old (about 1984). I could barely reach the turntable on the shelf, but the music was legendary!
One of my all-time favorite bands, of any genre. Such a pure sound.
Herb Pederson song done with some finesse by these boys.....
Greetings from IRELAND salamat for the memories
The Seldom Scene made this song popular long before Pederson's recording. i have three different recordings of this song by the scene that i like better than Pederson's versions. that said, i also love Chris Hillman & Herb Pedersen version. i'm predominantly of irish decent and have been listing to bluegrass since the late 1940's when buuegrass and country music was called hillbilly music. lots of irish and scottish influence in bluegrass music, especially older blue grass fiddle tunes. love your traditional music but love your BEER BETTER. ken t., usa

But Pedersen wrote the song.
Greetings from a Patrick in San Diego,
It was always a thrill to see the Seldom Scene live. I got a chance to mention that to Chris when we saw the Stringdusters much later.
Very smooth groove, totally complete.
Simply Awesome ❤❤!!!
Hard to imagine a more beautiful song. Just so soulful, genuine and “tender”.
LEGENDS! !!! THER WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER CLOSE !!!! the way they have the ability to make you Drift AWAY!!! 100s of bands have covered this and NONE close
Totally agree...love the Scene in any configuration & this one is especially magical.
Meravigliosa canzone, cantata con tutto il cuore, l`anima e lo spirito. Una gemma preziosa...veramente stupenda!!!

Beautiful! My favorite!!!
"Tenderness", Exactly Chris... that's the perfect word...
I so love The Seldom Scene! It's a band that cannot be equalled!
Hot dang. Tears and chills!
Video really captures emotion in the song.
Be still my heart......just the most beautiful, tenderness that I've ever heard.
Superb.

Sounded great guys. I just got to play bass on that song at a jam in Frederick last night. Beautiful. Almost brought tears to my eyes.
Fantastic !
Wow, Great rendition with Ricky and John and love the input from John, Tom and Chris. Still my favorite and always will be my favorite group ever.
what a song...what a band...
Such a damn good song!!! Always loved it even as a teen who was listening to metal at the time loved live at the cellar door!
Love
Thank you so much for posting this> I'm guessing Herb Pederson would be mightily impressed with this version.
Gonna buy me this album, was not aware it existed till now.
Having Chris talk about it, makes it very special. And of course the reference to Duffey in B is classic !
This just tears me up thinking about Mike and his MA6.
Incredible performance.
Rockin' boys! 🤘🤘🤘
Beautiful
I love the addition of Chris and Rickie, and of course the regulars.
Our band, Top Rail, did this some years ago. Jim, you really nailed it. Nice job, S.S.!
Very nice!
Fantastic Lou Reed and the guys!
TRES BELLE VERSION DE " WAIT A MINUTE "- BRUNO from FRANCE !
Amazingly well performed as usual,tx for posting!
Beautiful !
Spectacular, clearly.
Still like Herb Pedersen's version but the Seldom Scene brought it to the forefront. Great song. Anyone who can carry a tune can sing this classic song. Herb is underrated. I've enjoyed him since the 60's.

chorus:
Wait a minute did I hear you say you're going far away again
Try to change it I can't take the lonely nights without your love
Out doin' the road get the music done and move along
What good does it do play your songs for her and hear her say
(chorus)
You're rolling along, life's been good to you but even so
She comes to you late at night's the time you hear her say
(chorus)
I'm waitin' for you thirty days and nights without a rest
I gotta hold on twenty-five to go to hear you say hey

Great rendition...but John Duffy’s soaring tenor can never be equaled.
Totally agreed.
Hard to argue that
Never ever …
Nice job Simpkins brothers
