Seldom Scene was a favorite guest of Tommy Hunter for his Tommy Hunter Show which aired nationally in the 70's and 80's in Canada . That where they became a favorite of mine
Great music..I saw this band live feb.1986 with Phil Rosenthal..just a great band to watch play live..Mike auldridge was awesome. Great singing..really best bluegrass band ive.ever seen play in concert. Big fan of the 84 seldom scene band..rjones
Outstanding!!! They were cutting edge Bluegrass back in the 1970's. Living in Richmond I went to the Birchmere many times to see them even after joining the USAF I had thee pleasure to see them in Japan. The best of the best!
Thanks for sharing. I had a betamax once. And this truck driver thanks you for the great podcasts also. You can find the music but the interviews and stories are the real treasure.
Pretty sure I was bartending at The Birchmere that night. Interesting to see Ray Schmidts name on the credits. Foggy Bottom was a favorite. This tape is a treasure!
The Country Gentlemen and the Seldom Scene IMHO saved bluegrass music from extinction by adaptation of their style to different genres such as "If I were a carpenter" and "It's all over now baby blue".We attended a Seldom Scene concert at Camden Park in Huntington WVa and I talked to John Duffey and he remembered me from the early 60's when he was with the "Gentlemen'" and I was in the Army Stationed at Ft,Meade Md. and the Gentlemen played at a restaurant I think was called The Admiral....maybe.
My favorite -- the Phil Rosenthal version of Seldom Scene 1977-86. Of course, Phil's version of Muddy Water is the best. And shout out who got so many of us into Bluegrass/Newgrass -- Deejay Lee Michael Demsey of WAMU-FM 1982 to 2018 weekday afternoons.
This brings back a lot of memories. I didn't see myself in the crowd shots but I think I was very likely to have been there. If not that night, then there were many similar evenings. Such a great band and I very rarely missed a Thursday at The Birchmere when I lived in the area during the early to mid '80s. Thank you so much for finding and sharing the show.
use to drive to D.C. from Richmond on Saturday just to hear 88.5 WAMU just to hear Bluegrass music all day......Fredericksburg was about where we could pick up WAMU to hear Katy Daly and other legends of WAMU. Back then there was no satellite radio with 24/7 Bluegrass so I as a fan chased the music......Saturdays and Friday evenings were my Bluegrass times at WAMU 88.5.....Good Memories........Lest we not forget the Bluegrass bands that played Wolftrap in Vienna Va. Dang I could go on and on!
Those of us who lived in northern Canada, picked it up via skip radio when the weather conditions were right. Mostly Indiana , some Kentucky and Illinois stations that had big enough transmitters so the signal could ride off the clouds over the great lakes. Speaking of sound , the original recording must be very good, for the audio of this 3rd generation to be pretty darn good. Thanks for posting !
He also had a vocal mic by his instrument mic. If singing and playing happened quickly he stayed stage left. If he didn't have to back up or solo he preferred to get as close as he could to John & Phil, to get a better vocal blend in the trio.
Currently reading John Duffeys Bluegrass Life. Thanks for posting this video.
Hey camera man.... BANJO MATTERS! ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS BEN!
You're a few decades too late ;-)

Some fine videos available of them on the Hunter show.

Just a great group. Saw them more times than I can say. The talent was amazing.
I got to meet Phil Rosenthal about 10 years ago. Great guy! We even got to play some songs with him... thanks for posting this video
Cool!
Wow, I don't know how many times I saw them in that same room. Thanks for the memories. None like them ever.
Thanks for the memory and reminding me that time spent at a bar isn’t always wasted.
This iteration of them was who brought me to bluegrass, lo these many years ago. I love them so much.
Actually, it was a dobro on a Linda Ronstadt album in the late 70s that brought me to the Seldom Scene and bluegrass.

Saw it on Bluegrass Today. One of the best groups ever. Nice to see and hear Duffey again. Thanks for the upload.
Thank you so much for sharing this. What a group. What a time for progressive bluegrass.

Fantastic!! I wonder who was on the front door that night! 🙂
Phil Rosenthal got me here. Thanks for this, fantastic stuff.
Seldom scene are excellent as always
I heard them play at the Red Fox outside Washington, DC
That was a delightful blast from my past! I didn't see myself in the audience, but I'm sure I got to see the Seldom Scene at the Birchmere II.

What a treasure!!! Takes me back ....
What a find!! Thank you so much for sharing this treasure!! Fun to see Kitsy and Pete Kuykendall (Roberts)of Bluegrass Unlimited at 16:01.

Thanks for sharing! I haven't seen any "new" Birchmere footage in forever. Loving it! ❤
OMG l use to watch The Seldom Scene at the Carlisle Blue Grass festival up in Ontario Canada back in the 70's
Lot's of fond memories of seeing them play the Birchmere when they played a weekly slot. Always a good time. Great band!
An extraordinary piece, thank you!!!
This is really great to see! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it!

Eric, thanks for all your support and the fine, fine music!!
THANKS FOR SHARING
…..Excellent thank you.
I didn’t know John Aster (Gomez on Adam’s Family) played banjo. 😆
10/10 Thank you!
You're welcome!
An old fan of Seldom Scene and Betamax!
1 out of 2 isn't bad! :-)
cool!
nice!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is great, Howard!
Why does Mike move to the other mic to sing?
He also had a vocal mic by his instrument mic. If singing and playing happened quickly he stayed stage left. If he didn't have to back up or solo he preferred to get as close as he could to John & Phil, to get a better vocal blend in the trio.
Musically I prefer this incarnation of the scene but vocally with John Starling was much better ,he just lacked the chops on the guitar.
Everyone is allowed their favorites! 🙂
Wow, and this betamax almost ended up in the trash??!!😢
Hundreds os thursdays...
We were prob'ly there at the same time! :-)
East coast polyester bluegrass? Is it raining in here, or...?
bwahahaha..
The Seldom Scene wasn't even the best bluegrass band in the state at the time.
Didn't know there was a measuring stick for "best".
Wasted 3 mins listening nobodies
Great Bluegrass Classic Group and a Mike Nesmith inspired ditty.I loved this clip.
Vocals stepping on music? Shameful
