I rode my friends X Diavel S in Australia in January 2017 and I can tell you these bikes are unbelievable. I hired an Aprillia RSVR mille while on the vacation and obviously we were out having fun. The Ducati was every bit as quick as the Mille on a drag race up to 240kph... Although the Ducati has no fairing, it has superbike credentials and the 240 section rear tire keeps her stable and grippy. My friends particular XS model had a Roland Sands styling kit and she was very classy... Basically a 2 wheeled Lamborghini... Anyone who underestimates these Ducatis are fools or dreamers who have never owned or ridden one... Astonishing machines... I should really post the go-pro footage of my adventures...
Yeah I agree. We watched it.. The bike won. So the dude that loves cars found a trick to say the bike lost. Wouldn't fly on the street.. You'd get laughed at
Jared Tate Not really 'a lot' of skill.. You just need to know how to ride safely. I personally find it easier to ride a bike, maybe because I've been riding before driving.
GZT Same here. You do require significant skill on a bike. If you are good at riding you probably don't appreciate how much skill you have, to corner properly etc etc. Just imagine a complete novice jumping on a superbike in the wet.
@@warrenseiboth3466 I sat on a Harley once, and as soon as I put my foot on the forward set foot rest, 🤦♂️ I got off it again. Knowing that it was 1200cc, cost £12,000 and could only do 94mph was merely secondary.
The Diavel is a good choice for "real world" ass-kicking as it delivers low-down torque and gets a really fast 0-60 mph time, the Superbike would have been better from 60 mph onwards and would probably have beaten the Audi to the finish line.
Autocar has a history of dodgy comparisons IMO. They compared a super motard against a Caterham, a BMW 1000 RR against an M5 on a wet track and now a sports cruiser against an Audi R8 V10. This guy always seems to manipulate the comparisons so the car wins. There are numerous car bike comparisons on RUclips. Many of them show a stock superbike is quicker in lap times some show a car is quicker. Look at Lambo vs BMW 1000 rr. The car is better under brakes but it is very close in corner speed with the bike coming out on top on a few.
***** Whether or not he has ridden a Diavel means shit. The important part is that he has raced a Diavel, and beat it. I believe he could, as well. The ZX6R and the Diavel have pretty well documented nearly identical quarter miles. I wouldn't be surprised if the ZX6R could keep climbing after the Diavel ran out, given that the ZX6R is geared taller.
mazdaman1980 The car people made sure it would lose: They looked for a bike not made for a high top speed. And instead of doing the test at the normal 100mph target, they just moved the target speed to 150mph, just under the 160 mph top end of the bike- where it was running out of steam. It is called "cherry picking."
16k Bike smashed the R8 and his excuse is that the car stopped faster, Of course it fucking did on 4 wheels. The biker would be flung off if he slammed the brakes
Seemed like the bike was slow on getting off the line.... could a faster reaction time have made up that 1/10th second and changed who WON? Still - nothing in it. great comparo.
guys I don't think they are trying to say the car is "better" or something. I think they just made this comparison because it's interesting how they both made similar times, although they are completely different vehicles. It displays the main dynamics of a car vs. those of a bike, I think it does a good job of showing the pros and cons of each. at the end of the day they don't care what car/machine wins, they just want people to watch the videos
Just read the times written at the end of the vid... it says "0-150mph, Ducati 18,24sec, Audi 17,46sec. So the Audi is faster, from 100 to 150mph, which is not surprising due to the fact the Diavel has a v-twin engine, and a twin does'nt have a lot of power high in rpm, they are not made for. Inline four engines are made to have more power up in the revs :)
Gives times for audi for 0-100mph, then 0-150mph, then 0-150-0 mph, when he about to read ducati times, the car driver says "I'm not worried about that, just tell me the 0-150-0 time" what a wanker, don't want to give the times because the Ducati annihilated the Audi on acceleration, but the Audi out braked the bike, not surprising really given the weight difference eh? Who really cares who can brake the best, the Ducati is the mutts nuts!
Why are people moaning about the bike? The Diavel isnt the fastest bike true but then the audi isnt the fastest car either. I think this is a very interesting test because it shows 1) the bikes insane off the line ability, 2) the cars better top speed ability so after 120mph it claws a bit back and 3) the car has better brakes but only by a smidge which i wasnt expecting. Good video i think. Much better than showing a quick car getting dicked all over by a s1000rr which is one of the fastest bikes you can buy.
from Audi's to ferraris to masaraties to bentleys to aston martins i know a place at my moms work where they have all those cars and i take pictures and can see so many other luxery cars its amazing. it feels good touching the audi r 8 idk why xD
if you consider that when a bike is at maximum braking, the rear wheel comes up so all the weight is only on the front tire. So it's already 4 times the stopping power. Then if you consider the contact patch of a motorcycle tire vs a car tire... it's easily double... so it's conservatively 8 times more stopping power.. The bike weights roughly 8 times less. So all in all, it's somewhat close.
braking power per ton isnt what matters. Its contact patch to the road. This is where force can be applied to slow down velocity. the Brakes dissipate kinetic energy in form of heat but its the tires that do all the stopping. If that makes any sense.
I am very surprised that the figures are so close on the overall 0-150-0 figure considering that the car must have awesome braking power - all that rubber on the road and massive disc and pad area.
I totally agree. Never thought about the Audi ownership thing but that makes sense, so yeah a panigale would've been ideal. Though it would have been terrible for the car. So they chose the diavel. Thanks that makes sense.

Almost all Stock Superbikes can beat the most (if not all) Stock supercars in straight line within a limited distance - there is no doubt about that. Although I agree it highlights the strength and weakness of both the bike and the car, I'm not quite sure this is the response (Nissan GT-R vs Ducati). The track is still wet and that's a huge disadvantage when you ride. Especially when road is partly wet. The wet part are not only slipery, but sundenly cooling you tires makig them loose grip. The Ferrari F458 vs. Ducati was more relevant to me.
***** Definitely. The R8 might have more top speed, but in acceleration it would just be annihilated, at least up to 150 mph. And that's because bikes are electronically limited.
What a load of shit, sure bring the Panigale one of the fastest bikes, and they should have used a proper hypercar too like a LaFerrari, even in acceleration the Panigale isn't faster nevermind braking...
TheChamp 101 Keep in mind there are unrestricted turbocharged bikes that hit 400 km/h and that would drop even the Bugatti Veyron in a drag race, but even talking about standard restricted bikes, the Panigale (a cheap bike relatively speaking) would probably destroy that LaFerrari in a drag race.
euheide How would a Panigale destroy a LaFerrari in a drag race you dumb fuck? LaFerrari has a much better power to weight than a P1, and better traction as well it seems, the P1 is close with the Superlaggera and that's faster than a Panigale, I doubt the Panigale is faster than a LaFerrari.
TheChamp 101 you excite yourself too easily. I don't think you know what power-to-weight means. The traction is not an obstacle for the bike in such a drag race since it will lift the front wheel before sliding the back wheel.
FlameRays It has loads of power sure, but it still isn't a sports bike (like the one left in the back of the van!!), you should try sitting on an unfaired bike at 150mph the only "super" bit would be the strength needed to hang on. So as my original comment said - it's a SPORTS car against a cruiser the Diavel is NOT a sports bike, no mention of super bike.
Bikes generally accelerate quicker and allow you to get thru traffic faster. Cars keep you warm and dry and tend not to kill you the instant you get it wrong. Each to their own really so enjoy whatever takes your fancy.
It's the amount of engineering, time, materials, amount of materials, the fact that the car is safer, more comfortable, more usable, and more adaptable than the bike, that it's more expensive.
look at NA sportscars: Z06 (512HP): 0-60 3.9sec (new) Vantage (573HP): 0-60 3.9sec LF-A (552HP): 0-60 3.7sec R8V10Plus with 550HP and a 0-60: 3.5 seconds. (new) Viper GTS (640HP): 0-60 3.3 sec. even the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta (740HP): 0-60 3.1sec doesn`t smash the 3 second barrier. the Aventador does break it but with 150 HP more.
Acceleration. Pay attention, car drivers - this is why we chuckle when you try and run us at the lights. It's especially fun to use part throttle to match the acceleration of a car to give you some hope and then ACTUALLY give it everything and leave you crying with a dose of reality.
2. Let me explain how inertia most easily can be understood. Newton's second law. F = ma , Force equals mass times acceleration. That's right acceleration. For you all of this (weight, speed and aerodynamic drag) is seen as one and the same thing and for this reason you confuse top speed (as limited by aerodynamic drag) with acceleration (in which inertia matters, and therefore mass is used as a factor) while not considering aerodynamic drag at all as an important factor. Better remember this
You don't need a 1000cc sportsbike to beat the R8 V10 Plus. A stock 2013 Street Triple R (some 50kg lighter than the Diavel) will do it quite nicely. The Ducs weight is what's really getting in the way here...
The bike stopped slower due to the surface area on the tyres. The bike has alot less surface area on the 2 narrower wheels compared to the 4 wide wheels of the car.
If the rider had left the ABS on, the Diavel would have stopped even quicker. He was wiggling and nearly lost the front a few times during that stop. Not really a fair comparison without more details. Besides, who the hell cares about 150mph? That's nearly the Diavel's top speed. 0-100-0 is what matters for the road and track.
That is not the case. As Autocar's own GTR vs Ducati video shows the transitions between turning is the bikes weakness. Power - of course the bike is miles faster - but braking and transitions (because the rider has to shift his weight from side to side and cars have four corners to transition weight onto) - makes it difficult for the bike. The fact that bikes have 2-4 times the HP per tonne shows that they are at a disadvantage. They should destroy the car otherwise. Peace.
I'm not debating why it's more expensive at all. Of course there are good reasons why it's more expensive, but in terms of thrills, it would be far more practical and cost effective to buy the more exciting machine (bike) and still have plenty of cash to spare on a comfortable car without having to compromise in either area by buying something that is going to cost you twice as much as both of them combined anyway. And if you just want the car to show off, you have low self esteem.
two things to consider, this is Ducati's 'cruiser' and oddly Ducati is part of the VW family now, so these two machines are actually relatives now....humpf ;)
I'm kinda with you on all this. I've felt like Chris Harris's videos have really, really gone down hill lately. Quite frankly, I don't even go out of my way to watch them any more. Bummer.
i still think the way the audi flagship sports car get trashed by a cruiser bike is amazing! :D ofcourse a s1krr will rape pretty much any car out there. :)
So what your saying is, that if I want to beat a £16,000 motorcycle, I need to buy a £127,000 car. Think I will just stick to my bike as my name is not Richard Branson :-)
Always guys commenting about bikes and cars they don't own. Turns into a pissing match of one-upmanship. Thing about the diavel is, it doesn't go much past 150mph to begin with. Something with a little bit more top end could have been a better choice, as we all know the braking is where the r8 is going to beat any bike you can name, literally.
yes but the imotional pain lasted much longer...the accident took less than 20 seconds and changed my life forever complacency can be a real killer - if you think bikes are reasonably safe that can affect your reaction times..stay alert out there mate keep yourself safe
Looks like the guy in the Audi R8 was embarrassed that a £16k motorcycle could beat an Audi R8 to 150mph.Obviously the car could stop quicker & the R8 would eventually be quicker at the top end.Bang for Bucks a bike will always beats a car on performance (But I would still like an Audi R8..) Need a faired motorcycle with the top end once you go over 150mph to maintain the lead, maybe a Hayabusa...Dodgy comparisons as has been already said.
Overall I'm not surprised that the Audi stopped faster, it has 4 different disk breaks on 4 different wheels. It has double the stopping power of any motorcycle already.
Possibly, but it's no slouch. It's not your average cruiser. It's the 8th fastest production bike ever made 0-60, and 16th over a 1/4 mile so they probably assumed it would be pretty good to 150 as well, not realising that it's geared much lower than a superbike. But then again, I'm sure there are faster cars out there 0-150 than the audio. Regarding the Ducati Diavel, the huge rear wheel gives grip, the long low wheelbase keeps the front wheel down, and the 1198 based engine has more power and torque through most of it's rev range than most superbikes but looses out on overall top end power. And despite being a little heavier than a superbike the long wheel base will give it an advantage in braking too. It has the same callipers as the 1199 Panigale.
What do you mean "wrong bike." It's a comparison between an Diavel and an R8, not a comparison between "the most capable motorcycle on the planet" vs. an R8.
Good point about not being a superbike, but don't make this a car camp vs bike camp thing. This is simply a great data point in the vast universe of racing.
***** 0-60 in 2.6 seconds. It's more than a super bike. :o) I've had a 2010 R1, 2007 Monster S4R, and now a 2015 Diavel Black Stealth. I've never IMAGINED the power of this Diavel. It's incredible.
last times I seen for a s1000rr 0-150 was under 11 seconds and it would also stop a lot quicker than the diavel, a superbike ie any of the ones you mentioned would do it overall in about 18 0-150-0
Doesn't make sense. 150 mph is roughly the top speed of the diavel, of course it doesn't accelerate anymore! This bike is not made for speed, it made for acceleration. If it was far speed there would be a fairing and longer gear. As the biker said: "Find me a traffic light where we can race to 150 mph and stop and, I give you credit. "
And I find it funny how you resort to calling me a fanboy when I haven't said anything even remotely resembling fanboy talk. I did not say grocery shopping. I said shopping. Going to designer stores is shopping. I see supercars parked out of these shopping malls ALL THE TIME. And if you're rich, why drive anything else to go grocery shopping? Why not just go all the way? What if it rains. What if the person is 50 and wants comfortw/ excitement. Think outside the box, think COMPROMISE.
I'm a biker but we have to accept the car is better here, the Diavel is actually quite good for acceleration/braking because it's long. Whatever though, I have a GSXR1000 in the garage, who's got an R8?
No it wouldn't, the new HP4 weights around 205KG wet (lighter than the Diavels dry weight of 210KG), is more powerful and it is faired. 99% of the time Sport/Super bikes will out-brake and out-accelerate anything on the road.
I think they did this because Audi owns Ducati now. They should have used an 1199 Panigale though. That would destroy the R8 just as quickly... well, maybe not quite as quickly as the S1000RR, but close enough.
Why not try the Audi R8 against a 'reasonably-priced' road-bike, such as the Kawasaki ZZR1400? The biker would be taking tea when the Audi crossed the line. If you're going to have a straight-line drag race, why choose a bike that's more about cornering performance? Oh, sorry, forgot this was an AutoCAR feature :))
The Audi got beat regardless of your long term numbers. the car would have to travel at 150+ for a period of time to even catch up to the bike. The bike finishes first and u say the car is faster? In your theoretical assumption it would catch up at 150+ still does not show what i saw which is the Ducati smokin the Audi
They didn't plot a graph showing the amount of relative fun on a motorcycle. Off the chart...!

Seems like a pretty long video for a simple answer to a pointless question.
It's the amount of engineering, time, materials, amount of materials, the fact that the car is safer, more comfortable, more usable, and more adaptable than the bike, that it's more expensive.
Why ??!! Steve is absolutely brilliant when it comes to car reviews
MCN Have already raced the Audi R8 V10 ( 7speed gearbox) against the Ducati 1199 and the Duke beat the Audi by 10 seconds.
look at NA sportscars:
Z06 (512HP): 0-60 3.9sec
(new) Vantage (573HP): 0-60 3.9sec
LF-A (552HP): 0-60 3.7sec
R8V10Plus with 550HP and a 0-60: 3.5 seconds.
(new) Viper GTS (640HP): 0-60 3.3 sec.
even the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta (740HP): 0-60 3.1sec
doesn`t smash the 3 second barrier.
the Aventador does break it but with 150 HP more.
Better remember this
More video like this please!!!
the more friction you have the greater the stopping power. A couple inches of rubber on the road on a bike isn't significant.
BMW HP4 does 0-187mph in 19 seconds.
Like pretty much every autocar comparison lately imo
Im referring to casual driving on streets or motorways. And im not a big fan of drags, they just fxxkup the clutch.
Not bad for a naked bike which Ducati classifies as a cruiser. Without the fairing, the acceleration really falls away above 200kmh.
You don't need a 1000cc sportsbike to beat the R8 V10 Plus. A stock 2013 Street Triple R (some 50kg lighter than the Diavel) will do it quite nicely. The Ducs weight is what's really getting in the way here...
Do you know what understeer is?
The bike stopped slower due to the surface area on the tyres. The bike has alot less surface area on the 2 narrower wheels compared to the 4 wide wheels of the car.
So, the Audi's breaks are a bit better than the Diavel's breaks, so what! Admit it mate, the car got trounced, what are you fist pumping for!!
Need an all black Carbon Diavel, so badly!
youre comparing a supercar with a sport touring bike ? I think you should compare the ducati with an XKR or a Gran Turismo Maserati
If the rider had left the ABS on, the Diavel would have stopped even quicker. He was wiggling and nearly lost the front a few times during that stop. Not really a fair comparison without more details.
Besides, who the hell cares about 150mph? That's nearly the Diavel's top speed. 0-100-0 is what matters for the road and track.
in Malaysia price of Ducati Diavel RM130 000 or GBP28 888 and Audi R8 V10 RM800 000 or GBP177 777
Beautiful bike!♡
That is not the case. As Autocar's own GTR vs Ducati video shows the transitions between turning is the bikes weakness. Power - of course the bike is miles faster - but braking and transitions (because the rider has to shift his weight from side to side and cars have four corners to transition weight onto) - makes it difficult for the bike. The fact that bikes have 2-4 times the HP per tonne shows that they are at a disadvantage. They should destroy the car otherwise.
Peace.
Not mad at all actually! 4 tires will always be quicker at stopping. A motorbike usually has better acceleration than a car because of the weight.
have fun sitting in alllll that traffic buddy!
It takes serious skill to press a brake pedal.Total madness if you think about it.Your foot could slip off and sprain a big toe.
If you watch the start of the race at 1:46 the car sets off slightly before the bike
you should do a lap test see how it runs against the ducatti in turns and what not.
Very interesting and well done! Could you try it with a BMW S1000RR?
I'm kinda with you on all this. I've felt like Chris Harris's videos have really, really gone down hill lately. Quite frankly, I don't even go out of my way to watch them any more. Bummer.
The R8V10 is probably the best mixture of sound, speed, looks and price in the supercar segment
this is a cruiser and us basically naked so above 100 its pretty slow...trya s1000rr and get your shit torn
i still think the way the audi flagship sports car get trashed by a cruiser bike is amazing! :D
ofcourse a s1krr will rape pretty much any car out there.
Something with a little bit more top end could have been a better choice, as we all know the braking is where the r8 is going to beat any bike you can name, literally.
yes but the imotional pain lasted much longer...the accident took less than 20 seconds and changed my life forever
complacency can be a real killer - if you think bikes are reasonably safe that can affect your reaction times..stay alert out there mate keep yourself safe
Autocar, its time for 1080p please!
Wrong Bike For This Test????????????????????
What do you mean "wrong bike." It's a comparison between an Diavel and an R8, not a comparison between "the most capable motorcycle on the planet" vs. an R8.

DICK HEAD
Michael Monument - did you use enough question marks?
The Diavel is not a superbike...
Good point about not being a superbike, but don't make this a car camp vs bike camp thing. This is simply a great data point in the vast universe of racing.
***** No.. It isn't.. Its much more of an overly powered street bike that had babies with some sort of cruiser.
***** 0-60 in 2.6 seconds. It's more than a super bike. :o) I've had a 2010 R1, 2007 Monster S4R, and now a 2015 Diavel Black Stealth. I've never IMAGINED the power of this Diavel. It's incredible.
***** Except that its not a superbike...
+Claude V. To me it's a super duper bike. AKA a MUSCLE bike that passes super bikes on the highway. ;o)
last times I seen for a s1000rr 0-150 was under 11 seconds and it would also stop a lot quicker than the diavel, a superbike ie any of the ones you mentioned would do it overall in about 18 0-150-0
yes maybe but why they cant make it even more better or the best car as you said because of the performance probably they can improve
My dad's mate has a carbon black diavel and it was £18000? Did the guy say £60000 or £16000?
Whatever though, I have a GSXR1000 in the garage, who's got an R8?
lol sounds like someone's been stomped by a bike and has hard feelings
great, so a high performance car is slower accelerating than, lets call it a musclebike, glad we've established that
Tom Salmon Street bike/Cruiser*
Love the Diavel it looks like the Batpod :)
so this is the new R8 that Chris is going to test in next weeks yes? :)
This model Diavel is 16k, the Diavel Carbon is 21.5 or so.
No it wouldn't, the new HP4 weights around 205KG wet (lighter than the Diavels dry weight of 210KG), is more powerful and it is faired.
99% of the time Sport/Super bikes will out-brake and out-accelerate anything on the road.
Another victory for CARS! and its interesting to see the Audi was quicker to 150mph than the bike
What video that did you watch man? The diavel got to 150 first and in drag races noone cares about stopping time, its about whos the fastest lol
I think they did this because Audi owns Ducati now. They should have used an 1199 Panigale though. That would destroy the R8 just as quickly... well, maybe not quite as quickly as the S1000RR, but close enough.
s1000rr vs car has been done plenty of times before, it always wins so at least they did something a little different.
But who on earth buys a motor based on it's stopping ability?
Why not try the Audi R8 against a 'reasonably-priced' road-bike, such as the Kawasaki ZZR1400? The biker would be taking tea when the Audi crossed the line. If you're going to have a straight-line drag race, why choose a bike that's more about cornering performance? Oh, sorry, forgot this was an AutoCAR feature :))
The Diavel isn't a sportbike. It's more a rival for something like an A8. Try an 1198 next time to keep it sport vs sport.
Straight line racing wooooo, its like we are all americans now
