I don't get why everybody talks about video editing. 90 percent of us don't actually edit videos.
agastya athihalli Right? But if they were to address the constant web browsing of today’s computer users, they would always say “don’t upgrade, if you need an upgrade get a cheap laptop or Chromebook”.
I don’t video edit but I code which they also don’t talk about.
But all people that review Macbooks care about video editing ;)
But it doesn't make sense to talk about video editing because most of the consumers don't do video editing.
Because if the machine can easily video edit, it can pretty much surf the web, type your love letter to your puppy, or "code".
So that you who don't video edit, can know that the machine can do what you would want it to do.

I bought the new MacBook Air and it feels amazing and don't regret it at all. I like it more when comparing to any other laptop right now.
My girlfriend has a mid-2012 Macbook Air and, in 2019, almost every time we watch movies on it (connected to an external display), I am completely in awe at how amazing the speakers are. They are super loud, have a nice amount of low-end, clear mid-range, and highs... basically the full auditory spectrum is well balanced and all coming out of speakers that you can't even see! After all these years, it still seems like magic. I'm super curious to hear for myself how the speakers are in newest version of the Air. Nice video :)

The Tech Chap I was thinking about buying the air but i dont like the chip. I dont do video editing but use vba and Excel a lot. I like the chip no the pro w/o touchbar. Which one would you recomendó me?
This is the most concise, straight to the point and informative vid I've yet watched for this product. Excellent work, The Tech Chap.
I bought one to replace my 3 1/2 year old Air that died with a black screen. The new Air is very different and I love it. I especially love the keyboard and can type even faster on it than any computer keyboard I’ve ever tried. I’m in my 60’s and did statistical typing on typewriters. I type around 70-words-per-minute and feel I can go even faster with this new style keyboard. The screen is much brighter than I expected after listening to many reviews. It was set pretty low in Preferences. I’m retired and don’t do any type of video editing, but more word processing being on a couple of boards with my early music hobby. I highly recommend the new Air. I also have an iPad Pro and an iPad Mini-4.
If you go to the apple website, you can get a refurbished Mac Pro 13” for only $1,099. That’s less than the air.
I noticed this too
Only 1,099. I feel poor. My pc is from 2009 and it was only for 450$ . Now I use it for printing.
what exactly is a refurbished product? How is it different from a brand new one?
Supertramp, refurbished = repaired
@@buraksupertrampp They repair the used models from consumers by replacing worn out parts, such as a battery and inserting a new one. So you get a mixture of both old and new parts in the laptop
I gave my 2013 MacBook Pro to my grandson, but my new MacBook Air 2019 certainly meets all my needs. Thanks for your informative video!
I’ve got a macbook 12 and for the moment it is still perfect for me then i think i’ll wait for the refresh of the air with more powerful processors to consider to change it
Watching this in 2021 because every Macbook Air "Review" now is effectively an M1 review, which is not what I need! I know plenty about the chip but not enough about the hardware and this would be my first macbook
The air. I don’t video edit. This notebook is aimed at consumers really, who may light video edit. Sooner or later apple will put their own processors in their range of notebooks and i can’t wait if the A12X in the ipad Pros are anything to go by.
This aged well
I just purchased a MacBook Air 2018, and it meets all of my needs at school. I just needed a new laptop that I knew wasn't going to die, or if the battery was going to crap out at any second. I had always admired MacBooks but I actually struggles with the choice between an air and a pro. Like he just said in the video, if you're not planning on doing any hard gaming or lots of video editing, honestly this laptop is perfect. It's so incredibly light and I don't struggle to put it into my backpack. I really love the touch pad and the Touch ID. It makes life soooo much easier. It was hard to get used to at first because I mostly dealt with Windows applications, so the learning curve was kinda frustrating at times. But again I really love my computer. I bought a screen protector, case, keyboard protector, and water resistant lap top sleeve. I love how fast my MacBook Air 2018 charges too! also the new MacBook comes in 3 different colours, that was honestly the hardest choice haha.
Karen McNabb which color will be better?
SaZaN BaSnEt it really just depends on your preference :) I went with silver, although I really loved the gold haha. I thought it might be too flashy and I was just worried that work my judge me on my computer colour choice, so that’s why I just went with the regular silver. But again no regrets!
Karen McNabb I’m in dilemma between gold and silver😅😅
You convinced me. I have been dreaming about a MacBook my entire life. I will go ahead with the new Air
Absolutely great review 😎👍
Went with the new Air! its great!
This Air is a perfectly fine laptop still in 2019. I’m definitely gonna get a nicer iMac down the road as I do more and more intensive things, but for now, I’m happy!
Great review man! You just helped me make my decision. I’m gonna go with the air over the pro 😊

One of the best review.
For the last time, most people who get the MacBook air won't be doing video editing!
Finlay Mitchell I video edit 1080p perfectly on FCPX on my 2012 Macbook Air. These can easily handle it.
The 2018 air can certainly handle the video and photo editing.
Simon McCormack, holy cow! That really goes to show how stagnant computer progression is now.
I think they can only talk about what they know. That’s why they review video editing. I would want to know if this is good for graphic design and coding.
Finlay Mitchell
Im going to use it for editing.
I went with a used macbook 12 inch after seeing the air in person. Portability was my main reason and there was nothing in the air that made it more palatable for my use over the used macbook especially when considering the price of the air
That and the fact that the Air is a measly 128gb vs Macbook 12 256gb. That was the deal breaker for me.
sp spcanf I was going to get the MacBook 12" but it's much more expensive than the air and it's basically an iPad and I have an iPad pro. It only has one port.
Kikinator plus the new Air’s screen is dimmer than the Macbook. Put it side by side with Macbook & Pro non touch bar, you can see Air screen is the worst.
The best entry-level MacBook is a used/refurb now 'old' MacBook Air. It's less than half the price of anything they have new and it still does all the basic stuff just fine for most people.
I highly disagree :p
@@pissedoffhoneybadger3733
You. Know. _Nothing._
So there is that.
Bought the 2017 Air with 256 gb SSD new in July. And I agree it's quick enough for my daily stuff. At home it's hooked up to an external screen and the few times I'm on the road with it it's own screen is sufficient. Got a 400 gb sd card for additional storage and have 2 old school USB ports to hook up my devices. So yeah. My Air was 1199 euro, 129 for the SD card. So about the same price as the basic 2018 Air. But with over 500 gb more storage :) And by the looks of it, similar in speed as well.
I fall in to that camp of my whole ecosystem is Apple. And I need a new computer to replace my 2009 MBP. I don’t do video editing. I may mess around in iMovie & GarageBand for family stuff but nothing professional. I think the new 2018 MacBook Air would be perfect for me, but I’d want to upgrade the RAM to 16GB & the SSD to at least 512GB. My iTunes library is too large even for 256GB. I just wish it wasn’t so expensive. I think the Air should have been much cheaper & replaced the 12” MacBook completely. That way there’d be more of a tangible difference between the Air & the MacBook Pro.
Michael Wiseman I think you would get by fine with 8gb ram. Do you need all your music on there all the time? What about a portable drive or the cloud - I realise neither is quite as as convenient, but it’s worth a thought...
What's wrong with your 2009 MacBook Pro? Have you upgraded it with an SSD and 8GB Ram? Because that will normally make most older laptops runs beautifully still, as long as they have at least a dual core processor (yours would have a core 2 duo i imagine, which should be find for most standard usage still)
Have you considered iTunes Match? For $25 a year you could store all your music in the cloud and stream it through your phone, you can cutdown on phone storage as well. The downside is that 256kbps is as high as the bitrate goes, you don't actually upload your music, Apple just matches your songs to the ones on their service, unless they can't match it, in that case your song is uploaded. I use it, and have never gone back.
@@insertusername7141 nice, paying more money to encourage Apple's tactic of further squeezing consumer :)
No offense Apple make good products but they're making the cost of ownership too high, squeezing every last drop out of user's pocket. Nowadays if you buy any new Apple product, buying Apple Care for 3 years is pretty mandatory because you can not go to third party repair and if you go to Apple repair after that one year warranty, it cost you as much as a new device. This is why I stop any further investment in their Eco system after iPhones & Ipad. Cloud make you dependent on a good internet connection. I'd suggest just get an external hard drive, or better yet, a NAS in his home that connect to a good router and he and his family can store all their files in the NAS which can be easily accessed both locally or via the internet. Each user can have separated password protected storage area. With the NAS, also no dongle needed.
@@Beaut_Beau If his 2009 model is anything like mine, the plastic area near the hinge has developed multiple large cracks, the fans are audible and blow constantly, the mechanical hard drive has made certain tasks a chore, and the ram is insufficient for multiple tabs in chrome. He got 9 years out of the old girl, probably time to move on. I'm very happy with the new macbook air.

Is it good for editing videos and school work?
he was pushing the Air to the limit, that was the point. If it can edit video it can do anything else DUH
this is a first rate review, answered all my questions - thanks buddy, a massive help.
The reason to prefer MacBook Air against Pro is a longer battery life
I was considering the MacBook pro. My windows laptop died after 9 months of use in law school. I had a 10.5” iPad Pro that used to finish the semester I was in out as my only “computer.” It worked like a dream so I decided I didn’t actually need a computer. While more expensive I opted for a 12.9 inch 2018 iPad Pro with keyboard case and pencil. I have an Apple full-size keyboard and lg 4K monitor on my desk at home. I use the usd-c to monitor and connect the keyboard via Bluetooth. Most of the keyboard shortcuts and Siri shortcuts have cut nearly all of my reaching for the iPad away, but for the times I have too it sits on a mount within reach.
When I leave I just unplug and and go for a powerful device that rivals most laptops. I do wish that the iPad had some more desktop grade functionality but for what I need it’s amazing. I have no need for this air or any computer anymore. I imagine the iPad software will get better with future updates to it.
I wish this macbook air could be with glowing logo.. it will looks very awesome with glowing logo...
REALLY helpful when you compare this one to the 2017 mbp. I was so hesitant between these two.
Still using my 2012 Macbook Air. Still super fast!
When did you buy it
watching this on my new MacBook Air 2018
how has it been? you like it? I'm a PC user all my life and I'm considering this unit to mainly experience MAC OS but how is it on your end?
@@ramirenriquez6795 I've got it for 2 weeks now and that experience was already 5x better than 6 years of windows experience, but windows is still better for gaming. So if you want to game don't buy it. If you want to do usual office and editing work buy it. It's definitely worth the money and worth your time.
Ramir Enriquez it takes a while to get used to. I recently got one too like a week ago, and it’s actually very different from a pc.

@@ajo9016 How are you adjusting to the fewer ports?
SelfPlayer do you know if it works for graphic design?, ( Photoshop and Illustrator )
thanks for the insight on the macbook air, i actually talked to Apple today about whats best for me, and they said its the macbook air which i agree. that so im saving up towards that macbook.
I actually pulled the trigger on the 2018 Air. I am but a modest user, and I like the 2 x tb3 ports. I have no needs for dongles at this moment. My printer is on the home network, the wireless is AC and I do own an iPhone and Apple Watch, I have used MacOS in the past and loved it, so with this laptop Apple has enticed me to jump back into the eco system
Very nice review. I think I’d go for the bigger storage over the xtra Ram. 128 storage is really restrictive. Problem is, as soon as you do either (or both) you’re into MBP money. Come on Apple, this new Air is a good update, but why so stingy on storage??
I agree. Bought the 2017 Air in July and got the version with a 256 gb SSD. Don't have that much stuff on it, and it's down to 120 gb free. 128 gb doesn't cut it anymore.
@@SandsOfArrakis Yes, same - Install a few bits of pro software (Adobe, Audio, 3rd party Plugins etc) and you'll use ALL that 128gb in no time. If I hadn't got 256gb (still the bare minimum IMO) I would have been screwed within the first week.
I'm looking to buy a new laptop at the moment, split between Macbook Pro or Surface 2
There isn’t a usb for god sake
Great review, think you convinced me to get one! Would like the extra power of the Pro but the faulty keyboard worries me. A full versus comparison between the Air and the Surface Laptop 2 would be great!
The MacBook Air lost the backlit Apple logo. 😥😥😥 Loved it!
Me tooooo😭
My mid-2012 11" macbook air is still running great. This baby's still got another 4 years at least.
Actually I think I would go with the regular MacBook as the portability and smaller size is extremely valuable to me. I take my laptop to school, and the MacBook Air is almost a whole pound heavier. Additionally the MacBook costs less if you spec them out to the same size storage. I, as do most people, do not need the minimal extra power of the MacBook Air. The only thing that is keeping from buy the MacBook over the air is the fingerprint scanner and the and dual thunderbolt ports on the air.
If you don't need the extra port (which most people actually don't in "cloud-based" storage world) 12 inch is the way to go. Touch ID is great but typing in the password is not that bad to be honest.
Wait a bit for the refresh!
Consider an iPad Pro. I use it with the keyboard case for law school and it’s a dream and actually outperform in scores most of apples laptops and windows laptops
For me, I'm going to buy the Macbook Air w/ 16GB of RAM. I only do light internet surfing, e-mail, etc. However, I'm a network engineer and run through network labs which uses software that often takes up quite a bit of RAM. Going to purchase in the next couple of weeks.
I am using the Macbook Air right now and am very happy with it. I have a much larger and much more powerful Dell Inspiron 7567 for games and higher workloads. Being fearful of the Abyss that the Apple Ecosystem is, I sold my last gen iPad pro, and I have a Samsung S8 so I am staying far away from getting into the abyss. Some would say that I am losing a lot of what makes the Apple tax worth it by not indulging in the ecosystem at all, but I disagree and feel that my suite of devices works very well for me as a comsci major looking to have a foot in Windows, Linux and MacOS. Personally, I was fearful of jumping up to the Macbook Pro because of the second gen keyboard, which let's face it is unreliable and a bit louder when compared to the third gen. And also, the Air has better thermal performance as far as I've been able to gather.
Justis Crocker ...how’s the camera quality ?
I have the 2019 MBA and I am very satisfied with it. It’s great machine for someone who make every day- task .
“Why not pay a tiny bit more for a MacBook Pro?”
Oh I don’t know. *MAYBE BECAUSE ITS A THOUSAND DOLLARS MORE?*
I bought MacBook Air 2018 space gray 8 gb ram, 256 gb storage. It is more than enough for someone who wants to do web browsing, watch videos, light edit on vids and pics. It is overall perfect if you do not game on it.
(⌒▽⌒)
I bought the air over the pro because all I use is word documents and its super light so it makes my backpack much lighter. I found it to be the same speed when opening up programs compared to the pro and I thought the brightness was more enough!
You're an idiot for spending over £1000 to edit word documents
For the normal everyday usage, it fits perfectly. But a 6 to 7 year old non retina mbp unibody 13,15 or 17 inch with a Dual Core i5 or Quad Core i7 will do it as well, for less money, better upgrade ability in terms of storage, battery and ram. And you get all the ports you wish the latest MacBooks had. Even my 2009 13 inch mbp with the Intel 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo does all the stuff in a good way.
Would love to see a thorough comparison between matebook x vs macbook air 2018 vs xiaomi air performance and battery life , the two most important aspects of of a compatible laptop.
The matebook design might be MacBook inspired but it's the best-looking device among the three you showed here.

If it's just for school, buy the 2017 MBA as save yourself money. It's also got more ports. I got one couple of months ago and saved myself nearly €500. Now that the MBA 2018 is out the price of the previous one is bound to drop even further.

Great review, exactly what I was after! I am still torn, however between the 2018 Air vs the Pro. As someone who is constantly on the move, how noticeable is the weight difference between the 2018 Air vs the Pro? Also is the screen brightness difference between the 2 noticeable?

Just buy OS?
Some buy it for the logo
You mean the logo ?
I just bought it. I recommend paying the extra $200 for 256 GB, it’s worth it. I had a 15 inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, and it was a pain to travel with and hold in class. I’m glad I’m going back to an updated version of the Air. I used to edit 4K videos on the old Air and didn’t have issues, I’m sure I won’t with this one. Maybe just longer upload times but that’s fine.
Don't know but a air 2018 is like 1200 Euro and a pro like 2100.... So a lot lot more..
Just got one of these refurbished for $1020. They come with same warranty as brand new units. You can even add applecare for $250. So for about the same price as new you also get 2 years on top of the included 1 year warranty.
apple needs to stop selling the base mbp 13 without touchbar if they're gonna sell the macbook air at a similar price
soup touchbar really ain’t nothing special it actually drains the battery pretty quick
yeah the touchbar is a gimmick but apple should make pros exclusively with touchbar or else there's too much overlap between the air and the pro without touchbar
I’m guessing the base MacBook Pro will be discontinued and the air will stay where it is and take over its place.
yeah, especially since the base mbp didn't receive the 2018 update
Sami Amor The MacBook would be $1099 if it had 128GB of storage and I think that's a fair price for it considering the old MacBook Air is $999 and it doesn't even compare to it!
Great information!!! I've used various types of computers throughout the years. Your explanations are very important to me for my decision as to which type I should buy at this time. Unfortunately, I no longer like the way the touch bar operates which has prevented me from replacing my broken computer. I've been using my tablet and hold back on things that can only be done on a computer😢
I really like your videos and I'm not trying to sound stupid but you kinda look like Christian Eriksen but different hair colour! He's a footballer by the way. Also I love those three laptops!!
Tristan Rea I legit can’t Christian Erikson now 😂
There's still a place for the Macbook 12-inch. I got the iMac desktop for work and most of the heavy lifting. The Macbook is purely for general use (usually on my lap in bed), and the occasional photo editing on the go for work if I need it. I chose the 12 over the Air purely based on size, weight and the fact it comes with 256gb vs 128gb. If I want portability, I don't wanna carry around a portable hard drive as well. And there's no way in hell I'm using an iPad in place of a proper laptop. What a weird suggestion 🤦♀️
I do think I'd choose a new MBA over MBP if I were going to buy a new laptop this year, though I've already got one MBP 13" 2017 with a touch bar 😅
Sidney Jok32 do u have any keyboard problems? Heard that’s very common thing in MBP 2017
Great speakers, aluminum chassis, great display, best trackpad on the market. This is the best laptop for most people (not talking about average people with average income, but average people with good income).
I doubt I would use USB on a Mac anyway so should I get the 2018 Mac air instead
I just bought a MBP Early 2015 for £700 on ebay with 1 year seller warranty. More happy with it.

Explore With us MacBook 12inch
Had a 13 inch MBA from 2010 and went for the MB Pro instead of the Air. Why? First reason: lack of ports on the MBA. With 1 always reserved for the power cable you are stuck with only 1 port....that is just not good enough for this price and I don't want a big 'dongle jungle'.. The Pro has 4 ports, so with that I get 3 free instead of 1. Second reason: price, a full spec MBA costs about 3k euros, the Pro about 3,5k (or more of you go nuts on storage obviously). So only about 500 euros difference. Extra bonuses: I get the better CPU in the 2018 MB Pro and a touch bar (I happen to like it). Apple is not the innovator anymore it was 10 years ago, it needs to step up the game because there are better alternatives for it more and more. Bought the MB Pro nevertheless, mainly for the build quality, nobody beats that (yet...) and for the OS (it just works, no #$%@ with leaks, patches, etc.) The weight difference between MBA and Pro was not a big deal to me, the Pro is about the same weight as my old Air, I thought the new Air was just too heavy, they could have made it lighter to make it stand out from the Pro. So...happy with my 2018 13 inch MB Pro, I just think it is more future proof...
Yes if you must stay within the Apple ecosystem the latest 13" Pro is the best choice. Apple's pricing of the new Air is simply ridiculous.
Why do you say that a fully spec MBA costs 3k? I think it's 1.8k now
Valerio Viperino no its not its actually 3089 euros in the apple store and that is without apple care of 250 euros
Agree, Apple no longer the innovator. Next port to get rid of the charging port? Wireless charging which will also have to bonus of us needing to replace batteries more often or more probably shell out for 'the latest and greatest ever ever' I'm sure that's in the pipeline, they also want us to save everything in the cloud which means more money they can squeeze out of it's customers. They want to be a $2 TRILLION company so need to eke out every cent out of us!!
@@horsetom10 Let's just call it for what it is, the Apple laptop okay corral. I'm apple-centric on laptops and desktops, next-gen, might not be so, if others upgrade software and hardware options and will support their stuff as Apple does, I'll have to switch. But where is this world that is not yet here?
2:55 top notch 😂😂😂
MacBook 12": $549
MacBook Air: $949
MacBook Pro 13" 128gb SSD: axe it.
MacBook Pro 13" dual-core w/ TB: $1299
Mate, best review of this laptop I have seen. Congrats 🏆
I’m getting Pro with touch bar. Air is simly too underpowered for a future work.
sova can you explain why? I’m trying do decide what to buy & would love your opinion. I want to do video editing on it and I see that air is fine but pro would potentially be better?
Thank-you for the MacBook Air review. I am still choosing the MacBook Air over the MacBook Pro only because I am more interested in a lighter weight and better looking laptop, also I like the fact you can get the Air in gold even though numerous reviews compare the two together and it’s proven there is more bang for your buck with the Pro :)
Victoria Bowskill yes, the gold is really pretty. I don’t like the silver or space grey.
You recommended the iPad Pro over a real laptop. Really? Good luck cutting and pasting text with your finger.
With the keyboard dock
Are the cursor controls and keyboard shortcuts good enough for copying and pasting?
B Gur yes. New IPad Pro and the keyboard are very good
I have no problem doing cutting and pasting with finger, Apple Pencil or a keyboard.
But as there is no trackpad or mouse control, how often do you have to use your finger or pencil to do something?
Would you think it was better if that kind of feature was available for the iPad?
is it good for programming??
2018 MacBook pro is the right one to buy
just buy a windows laptop
@@JulianMichtner those are disgusting
@@bencebekefi7032 surface book looks good
Yeah but almost the reason people buy MacBook Pro Touch Bar is for the Touch ID and people like lighter so the air is a middle ground between the MacBook and MacBook Pro
Anonymous MacBook Air has Touch ID but no Touch Bar and the MacBook Pro had Touch ID and Touch Bar whereas the MacBook has none
It seems like this is an actual successor to the old Macbook Air. Argue all you want but the Pro is dramatically different from the 2012 model, but the new Air doesn't stray from its predecessors aesthetics, it improves upon them.
Does it handle Logic Pro X well?
First time on this channel and the review is very good 👍👍👍
I think the price difference betweeb air 2018 and pro 2018 is not that big, so - it should be a pro (or air should be 1100 with 256 gb)
Nikolay P the problem with Pro 13 is a flexgate. To buy a notebook for 1200$ and then pay half the price for fixing is depressing.
So clear and precise. I want to buy my gf a macbook but can't decide between the three. You just help me with the decision with this video. Thanks.
