Hello I know this video is from 6 years ago, but I wanted to let you know that I just changed out my tub stopper following your instructions! Just wanted to say thank you 😊!!
1:52 Good video except for the fact you did not replace the gasket. Yeah, you might get by without it, but why take a chance when it will only take another minute or so to replace.
I had a plumber in to replace a couple of sinks and toilets. I asked him about the drain. He said it was a big job as he would have to 'remove the entire bathtub to do it'. I now realize he just didn't want to be bothered. What a BS artist! Thanks for the easy to follow video. You're one of the good guys! ♥🇨🇦
Just switched from the old lever drain stop to the touch toe drain stop. I have never done a drain related job before I always got a plumber and never gave it a second thought. I just saved roughly $100 as I was quoted $140 by a local plumber. Take care of yourselves everybody Great video!!!
You always have to pressure test the drain for any leaks in the shoe pipe underneath. Never take it for granted that your plumbers putty is holding up. Remember one drip equals a leak
Thank you for your step-by-step video. I was able to replace mine in 10 minutes and saved $357.00. And I am not the most mechanical person. Thank you again! I even took pics.
My mother is 90 and lives in another state. Her bathtub drain was leaking water so she called a plumber and he replaced the bathtub drain like you just did and the bill totaled $285.00. Thank you for posting this informative video.
Just what I got quoted. Waiting for the plumber right now. I'm nervous doing it by myself because of the washer. Some say you have to place it under the tub or theres gonna be a leak. He just didnt use it at all. Why???
@@nakkohmt8978 There already is a washer under the tub. That one stays in place, it doesn't get removed. The only reason you'd mess with that is if it was leaking. He was just replacing the drain in the video, there was no leak.
Thank you for posting such a simple and easy to follow video. A quick trip to the hardware store and literally 5 minutes later pop up tub drain is fixed. I can’t thank you enough!!
Tried to use the barbell removal tool for the replacement on my drain and had to look for a drain key-type tool instead. Wound up getting a Tub Drain Extractor to take the old drain out. As far as presentation - this was a great video for showing the process of replacing a drain. I had to look up additional help for replacing an older, corroded drain. Perhaps a 2.0 to include some variables you'll run into? Thanks for the video Maple Ridge Plumber!
Thank you so much for this video! You saved me hundreds of dollars! I was able to complete this job in 10 minutes! My wife was seriously impressed! So easy!
Well done. Thanks for the short, to-the-point instructions. I already have a money pit in this 80-year old house! Need to find as many price cuts as necessary.
It doesn’t work like this in reality A lot of the time. If the drain cracks underneath the tub, you got to get your tub out to redo the piping, or open up the ceiling underneath the bathtub for access. Be very very careful. His video is a little too simple!!
I friggin love this. I am going to do this tomorrow. The instructions you gave are very and straight forward. If all goes well I will be back with my happy dance
Just completed this after watching your video. Always wondered what wrench you used to get that drain out. Now I’m an official owner of a barbell tub tool. LOL You saved me time and $. Thank you!
For whatever reason our plumber told use we need to remove the whole tub to install this lol I’m just going to do it myself! Thanks for the instruction video
I was worried when ours went out, but I had it fixed in no time. Thank you from all RUclips warriors. The one extra tool I needed was a “tub drain extractor” as ours was too corroded to use the wrench to turn it out. -Hope that helps someone in the future!
Thanks for your help, I initially left the washer there and then noticed that the drain sits too high and a ring of water sits there, I took the washer out and now it's perfect. Thank you!
This video was super straight forward and to the point. Also, very helpful. Exactly the type of info I was looking for. Thank you for putting this out.
Have used the this video in the past with great success, but this time I struggled for a half an hour until I realized there were two sizes of pipe fitting screwed into one another and the larger one would never fit my drain!🤣. Next time it’ll only take five minutes! Thank you for the concise and confidence-building video!
Great video! Simple instructions and guidance. I had no idea on how to replace my bathtub drain. After watching this video, I went to Lowe's and grab the right tools and did the job in under 10 minutes. Thank you!
Bought tub tool to remove drain. For harder to remove drain use a 14" monkey wrench to get more leverage so that puppy will turn. Thanks for your video. It helped me a lot.
great video. I needed to make sure I didn't need the gasket that came with the new setup. I needed to remove the lever and plug assembly. It fought a little but it finally came out. thanks again for taking your time to make the video.
Long-haired lady that used a cheap, plastic, barbed hair removal tool and some of it broke off into the drain. I need to remove this drain 🤦🏾♀️This helps so much. 🙌🏾
Awesome video. I watched it one time and did both my tub drains. The only hard part was the initial twist off of the drain. But once you get it moving, it should only take you five minutes to complete this job. THANK YOU!!!
Great video...I'll add that I have usually run across the old dried up plumbers puddy from the prior drain. I take my time doing a good job of cleaning that out and making sure there are not chunks in the drain hole.
This video is a BEST case scenario and poster should have Cautioned against the many things that can go wrong. Many will try this and start a plumbing nightmare ... This based on over 35 yrs in this trade.

Nice video, short & sweet! Thought bathtub drain replacement is close to rocket engineering and wouldn't mind paying $200 to get it fixed by a plumber. This video made me do the job for $11 (price for the barbell tub tool). Well thanks! 😎
Do you have a link to the same drain you used to replace this one with? I’ve looked at a few kits and a lot of them come with other parts you don’t mention. Our stopper was broken when we bought the house and so we would really like to replace it.
Very well explained and very professional. Easy to see you really know your job well. Great teacher. Just what I needed to take on my own job. Last video I watched took 15 minutes to tell me much less than you did in 5 minutes.
I'm one of the unlucky ones too. I watched another video and someone said to try a heat gun and I was too scared to try that so I used my nice blow dryer on the hottest setting then slowly (and carefully) started prying the edges off with one of those multi use painters tool. The drain cover was warped by then so make sure you really don't want your old drain pipe if you wanna try what I did. I loosed the cover all around and FINALLY the drain wrench would give. It took a lot of time, but I did it on my own - no hubby included and no damaged tub.
Gasket is on the underside of the tub sealing the drain flange to the tub. Plumber’s Putty is used on top sealing the drain cover to the top of the tub. His video was spot-on.

Hi thanks for the video, my drain plug is a plastic one and it has been damaged, a plumber quoted $1500 to fix the waste plug, apparently they need to knock down the bricks to get under the tub to repair this but you just did it without going down, so I called another plumber and he said the same thing ie he will have to go under the bathtub to fix the waste plug. Can you tell me what could be the difference as it seems to me you did the same repair without having to go under the tub.
That's what 2 plumbers told me, as well. Said my old drain couldn't be removed without going in behind the wall where my tub is, which is impossible because some of my kitchen cabinets and counter back up to that wall. They said the drain pipe would fall down under the tub without accessing the drain pipe that way. I'm confused as to why this makes it seem that that's not the case.
That was great.. long story short I pulled the drain to check for depth. I have to buy a waterless trap due to there being no conventional tap currently installed. I was then left with a leak and the same odor coming up that I had intended to fix with the waterless trap. I'm going to attempt to tighten the snot out of the drain to at least get rid of the leak, and maybe buy some plumbers putty if i need to. Thank you very much!

Just one of a number of projects I will undertake. The tub drain is rusted a bit so there's work to be done. I tend to watch many of these vids.
How do you know for sure the seal between the drain pipe underneath the tub and the bottom of the tub is water tight? Couldn't removing the drain cause the gasket underneath to shift and leak?
I have now learned about the tub wrench tool to remove the grain. The video shows a drain with 4 supports that the tool lines up with. My drain only has three support spokes, not four, and I do not think it will line up with the tool. Are there tub wrenches that will work with my drain?
It's always a good idea to put a drop cloth or blanket in the tub to prevent the tub from being damaged if you drop a tool/part.
